Loughner Video Released By Community College
— DrewM

This appeared last night and the reaction from folks on Twitter and email was that it's a tough watch.

The guy is genuinely disturbed. We knew that but to hear and see it so clearly is pretty shocking.

I would love to sit with Chris Matthews, Keith Olbermann, Paul Krugman and the like to watch this. Then when it's over, I'd like them to explain to me how they think this broken and damaged man was in any way influenced by the 'tone' of our political discourse. Yes, his ramblings involve phrases like "unconstitutional" and "gold" that often turn up in political discussions but they are clearly unrelated to any political theory known to normal human beings. Loughner could just have easily fixated on "mashed potatoes" and "green rabbits" and it would have made as much sense.

It's contemptible how so many Democrats and liberals have latched onto this guy's mental derangement to further their political goals.

If you don't believe me, read Charles Blow in today's New York Times.

Now weÂ’ve settled into the by-any-means-necessary argument: anything that gets us to focus on the rhetoric and tamp it down is a good thing. But a wrong in the service of righteousness is no less wrong, no less corrosive, no less a menace to the very righteousness itÂ’s meant to support.

You canÂ’t claim the higher ground in a pit of quicksand.

Concocting connections to advance an argument actually weakens it. The argument for tonal moderation has been done a tremendous disservice by those who sought to score political points in the absence of proof.

Blow
is no moderate, hell, he's usually not even very interesting but even he sees how dishonest the Democrats have behaved this week. Seems if the left has lost a guy like Blow, they might want to take a step back and consider what they've done.

Or not.

Do. Not. Fall. For. It.

Blow is merely the one assigned to sound credible and conciliatory THIS TIME.

Unless he goes the full monty and criticizes people by name - calls them out and demands some sort of atonement, with consequences for failing to make real and honest corrections - he's just playing along with the plan.

The New York Slimes cannot be allowed to regain credibility for the left so easily.

Eh? He still blames the "preponderance" of the violent rhetoric on the right. They haven't lost him, he's trying to get them to put the mask back on so it's easier to keep duping the rubes.

With the beginnings of evidence that the rally tshirts were recycled Obama for America stuff, and that open borders people were bused to the memorial/rally (Chicanos Unidas Arizona, so maybe those were the Brewer booers), yes I'd say the mask slipped prematurely.

It did so because they don't have the numbers or the time to be careful.

Soros IS 80, after all.  If he's going to do his Man Who Broke The Bank of England on us, he hasn't much time.

Obama (or rather the machine for which he is the pretty good-speech-giving hood ornament) kicked off his campaign at the "memorial service".

One under-the-radar column won't give them any credibility. It would take several years of serious deprogramming in the media industry for that to happen. The entire culture of journalism would have to shift radically to a fact-based, bias-acknowledged format structured so that self-critique is paramount and the 'narrative' subjugated.

The NYT isn't a one-off leftie rag; it's just the most prominent example of propaganda media. One column isn't going to do squat. So relax.

They didn't "lose" Blow, he's playing stage 2.

Stage 1: Lies, abuse, false accusations.
Stage 2: Claim the middle ground, demand civility.
Stage 3: Carry on with the assumption that the lie is true, refuse to discuss it.

The fact that he continues to blame the right for what the left is doing makes this just part of the Big Lie strategy, and the claim of desire for civility is disingenuous.

Stop falling for it, they're not apologizing, they're still hitting you.

67 If he was going to spout hate and anger, based on words or actions by anyone, he would have done so in his own video.  That would have made him feel justified in whatever heinous crime(s) he was about to commit.  And I'm sure you noticed; he mentioned no one.  No politico, no party (tea or otherwise) and it certainly doesn't seem as though he was politically influenced, other than his learned 'legal opinion' as to the constitutionality of the war.  He - and his actions - are being used to the nth degree for no other reason than to advance their ideology and smear a major opponent.

In the 2010 election, I was worried that the Dems might do a staged attack on themselves  before the election and blame Republicans, tea partiers and conservatives. The media and the dems were "setting the stage". Remember all the things Nancy Pelosi said and did just herself. Mobs, tears, and gavels? Anyway, Beck and Palin were brilliant in their 500 thousand Patriot march. No violence, no rhetoric, no signs, no polution even. So I believe the Dems decided to wait until 2012.

However, the Dems and media put most of their chips in on the real Jared Lee Loughner and it has blown up in their faces. I feel less worried about this now. They have shot their proverbial load. It was a premature eJaredulation.

Posted by: moi at January 15, 2011 04:15 PM (Ez4Ql)

Well first of all this "kid" was 22 years old. He's a man. So basically his parents have zero say in his life from a legal standpoint. Unless they are willing to call the cops and say he threatened them with violence there is little any parent can do except kick him out of the house.  This "kid" held jobs. Yes poorly but well enough at some point to move out and get his own place at one point. Second, yes this guy SEEMS crazy. But is he? What's so different from his rantings and Jesse Jackson suggesting Lebron James is a slave? There are people spouting wacky ideas all over the place. On TV, in books and the web. Hell we have congressmen suggesting an island will tip over. There were probably a few winners that came and made speeches at his school.

How many tv shows on cable present completely wacky historical crap as if it has even an ounce of legitimacy?

There are thousands of people with ideas as wacky as this or worse on campuses all over this country and they never shoot anybody. People seemed scared of him but it was mostly because he was odd, not violent. He was never arrested for assault, or stalking. The death threats from before have never materialized in any police report so far.

There was nothing any parent could have done here. I'm sure if they threatened to kick him out if he didn't get help he would have just left. I would still have done it as a father. But I'm not sure it would have helped. It might have at least forced the authorities hand if he was busted living on the street.

I'm sure they're imbeciles also but the STM insists on giving them a pass so fuck them.

From some of the things I've read (daddy who doesn't work and who has anger issues, rumored lots of beer in shopping basket, mommy who works with some environmental job etc) I think his parents are probably plenty dysfunctional.  I think they also knew others thought their son had problems.

They may have thought others exaggerated their son's problems - denial is a potent force.  Or they may have known full well how crazy their son was.  However, since he was >18 there is very little they can do to 'force' treatment if the person doesn't want it.  I know the frustrations from my extended family when one of their children was (they thought) dangerous.  There were episodes involving police and waving around of knives.  They could NOT get this person committed or treated against their will.  I'm not an apologist for the parents, but they may have tried. Until I know more I won't completely condemn them.  IF they made no effort, well then I'll heap scorn with everyone else.

Those pictures are a perfect example. He took these pictures just days before and never retrieved them. Do they show what he was really like or was it to effect what people would think of him afterwords? It's all very Lee Harvey Oswald except Oswald's pictures were taken to show what a revolutionary he was, not that he was crazy.

Who says they didn't try to get him help? He also held a number of jobs and didn't have much of a social life. He could have earned the money.

They could have forced him to see a doc and if that didn't work, call out a psychiatric team to evaluate him.

How do you force him? They can call whoever they like if he says he won't then what can any parent do? Who is this Team that's at the beck and call of parent's anyway? The only recourse the parent's had was to kick him out or show some evidence he was violent. He did move out at one point and the father convinced him to come back home. What exactly do the parent's say anyway once this team showed up?

Parent: "Well he does nothing but sit around and talk about new currency, wrong dates and unconstitionality all day. He's crazy!"

Medical Professional: "Listen buddy, we can help you. Come with us."

Jared:  " No."

Arizona's civil-commitment statutes for the mentally ill are apparently actually a lot broader than that, which makes them much broader than most states and the failure to act re: Loughner ultimately that much more tragic for his victims.  Almost anyone can be involuntarily hospitalized for a 72-hour psych eval/observation period, and additional measures can be taken with further evidence of need for treatment.

129 The fact that the parents did not call the police and have their son "Probated" makes them quite guilty indeed. Each state has slightly different laws regarding this procedure. Basically it requires that someone is a threat to themselves or others. This is a very low threshold to meet. For example, it is common for mentally ill to stay away for days at a time (saying it is impossible for them to sleep). At the tail end of this manic episode, they cook meals on the stove. A few minutes later, they are completely asleep, while the food is slowly burning (if you have family members who are bi-polar stock up on smoke detectors). Call the police. Explain that it is impossible to stay away and babysit/monitor them for days on end and while you were sleeping they almost burned the house down. At this point, they will ask the mentally ill person a few questions, such as, who is the current president? What month is it? etc. Depending on circumstances, the EMS or police will take the person for observation and treatment. Being "Probated" is a legal court proceeding. Usually resulting in an average of 2 weeks to a month of "treatment". If you are going this route, it behooves you to initiate additional proceedings to become "Legal Guardian" of this family member. Once granted you have full authority as to their treatment. I have been through this process many times over the course of 20 years. So, when someone says his family could do nothing, either they are ignorant or lying or both. As to the criminal proceedings for this idiot, being declared "mentally incompetent" is a very high threshold to meet. From what I know so far of this case, it is my opinion, after government psychiatrists examine him he will not meet that standard.

Posted by: political correctness czar at January 15, 2011 02:55 PM (UPNlB)

131 "...being declared "mentally incompetent" is a very high threshold to meet."

It doesn't seem so high when one has dealt with hundreds of incompetent defendants, but then years as a prosecutor in Mental Health Court will do that.  Any criminal defendant is presumptively competent.  To be incompetent to stand trial one must be incapable of even adequately consulting with counsel and assisting in their own defense, lack basic understanding of the roles of the actors in the process and what they do, and/or lack a rational factual understanding of the that process.

Loughner is probably a schizophrenic.  He's also probably a high-functioning schizophrenic, and a psychopath.  Whether he's presently competent may be marginal, but most schizophrenics are restorable to legal competency with the right combination of meds and "competency training."

Keep in mind that competence and the insanity defense are two quite separate issues.  You can have all sorts of crazy delusions and issues and still be "legally sane," i.e., understand right from wrong.  Being a psychopath means you know what you're doing is wrong: you just don't give a fuck.

136 "It doesn't seem so high when one has dealt with hundreds of incompetent defendants, but then years as a prosecutor in Mental Health Court will do that." Like I said, each state has different interpretations as to the mental competence threshold. Add the psychiatrists personal bias to the mix and it can vary greatly indeed. In Michigan, specifically Wayne County, the standards are quite high. I am speaking from personal experience. On a different note, it will be tabloid worthy when the facts are leaked via FOIA or similar channels as to what Sheriff Dumbfuck knew, and when he knew it regarding his deputies contacts with this individual. I predict huge lawsuits coming his way, and he will no doubt want to settle out of court to have the info sealed.

137 "Again, this isn't a kid. He's not a teenager. He's not a minor. Legally what do you think these parent's could have convinced any authority to do if he had no violent tendencies? " Again, he was their kid and living in their home and being financially supported by him. If he didn't want to see a doctor they could have used it to exercise some control over him and coerce him into seeing one. There is no indication that the parents did anything to get their kid to a doctor. You don't wait for someone to have "violent tendencies" to seek treatment. Sheesh!

Posted by: moi at January 16, 2011 04:28 AM (Ez4Ql)

138 There are so many things the parents could have done. Scenario #1. They could have had an "adult" talk with him. Explain that now he is an adult he should be living on his own. Do this in a non-confrontational manner. Explain that as his parents you will do what you can to set him up in an apartment. Let him help in the selection process, and he has final pick as to his new abode. Then if needed, pay first month, last month, and security deposit, as well as help furnish the odds and ends. Yes, this will be somewhat expensive. Just do it. Junior's behavior WILL be observed by his neighbors in the apartment complex, and if odd, reported to the apartment manager. This step is quite necessary as it is evidence that the police need to force treatment if necessary (which it most probably will be). Chances are, Junior will not last 30 days before he is asked to leave/evicted. At this point the parents should ask the property manager if they will provide a statement which will help Junior get the help he needs. The manager will be so happy to be rid of Junior they will be agreeable to this. Somewhere during all of this the parents should have contacted legal counsel and inquired as to becoming Legal Guardian of Junior. Armed with statements from his former neighbors and landlord present this to Junior. Tell him in no uncertain terms he MUST agree to this (Legal Guardian) as he will no longer be allowed to come home ever again until he signs the papers. Believe me after 30 days in the county mental ward he will sign. This is by no means the end of the nightmare, but it is one method that does work, as it is one I have used quite successfully. At some point Junior will likely live with the parents again. This is or should be temporary as he WILL have another "episode". When Junior "flips out"again, the parents, who by now are Legal Guardians can place Junior in the county hospital for treatment as well as request that upon release he must reside in a Group Home. I hope this info helps someone. NOBODY told me this stuff, I had to learn it the hard way.
