Major Earthquake Hits New Zealand
— DrewM

6.3, shallow and close to Christchurch.

The Fire Service has confirmed that there have been deaths.

National Civil Defence Controller David Coetzee says the damage is worse than from the 4 September quake.

...Civil Defence Minister John Carter says the situation is very serious.

He says the emergency headquarters in the Beehive have been activated and the head of Civil Defence, John Hamilton, is on his way there.

Telecom says it is working to determine which services have been affected by the quake, and getting them restored as soon as possible.

Civil Defence is asking people stay off their cellphones to allow calls from injured or trapped people to be able to get through to emergency services.

They also are asking that if people are injured or trapped to keep trying on 111.

A couple of f-bombs in the video below, so content warning.

On a tip provided by a concerned American yesterday, information has been discovered indicating a widespread network of radical Islamist sleeper cells in the U.S. that have quietly blended in with communities so as not to arouse suspicion. Evidence indicates that the cells are lying in wait, possibly in order to receive a signal to embark on a simultaneous mission to murder hundreds of citizens.

Um, this is news?  Anyone who doesn't already assume this is... thick.

19 hahaha I like the response of the residents it is in sharp contrast to the cameraman and narrator be they professional or amatures. It reminds me of the reporter in FL who was reporting on one of the hurricanes in 04 and only had 1 quivering no parking sign standing in about 2 inches of water for his disaster but he did his best hindenberg impersonation. Oh the humanity!!!! hahahahahahaha

Well a least someone had the good sense to kept the road nice and tidy during an earthquake.

22 My libtard b-i-l will be devastated.  He says as soon as his parents have assumed room temp, he's "leaving this awful, fascist country, and moving to New Zealand, where no one judges you and you can just be free."

Yes, he's an idiot.

Prayers for the people there.

Does he know that NZ is one of the places Rush says he'd move to when things got too bad here?  With any luck, your b-i-l will live in the same town.

Oh, color me surprised.  And seriously, "hundreds?"  If they only murder hundreds, we should be thankful.  But, hey, we don't want to do anything crazy and unfair like securing our borders . . .  spits.

I just wish the bastard would move.  Since his third divorce, and his hatred of BOOOOSH, he's unbearable.  He's the jackass who yelled at me and shoved his finger in my face in a restaurant three days before D'oh Boy left for boot camp, and a little over a week before my mom suddenly got sick and died.  He's a total douche.  I don't think New Zealand even wants him.

31 Jane, does he know about the union busting there over the Hobbit movie?

Posted by: Thorin at February 21, 2011 04:43 PM (9Pzy7)

32 I've only been to the North Island, so not down south around Christchurch.  It's still one of my favorite places.  I hope the death toll is low.

Better have a work skill New Zealand needs.
Most country's don't appreciate people just showing up living off what ever cash they have and go on the public dole when the money runs out.

With great sympathy for the people of New Zealand I say to the government of New Zealand:

Don't you wish you had spent all that money you squandered on green shit and carbon tading and lying about temperature on earthquake preparadness instead?
