Is this the thread to drink, mourn, laugh, cry, and contemplate how short life is?
Or maybe, just talk about boobs.
Whatever.

Double Trouble
Wasn't that a brief sitcom? Couple of cute blond girls back in the early 80's I think.

Chemjeff, hit 'em with Windex or any ammonia based window cleaner. It kills the ants and erases their pheromone trail. Also, go outside and try and find where they are coming in. With the heat we're having ants come in to get out of the heat and find water. How do I know all this? I've been fighting the same battle for over a week now. The exterminators are coming out again on Monday.

I've been using Ortho Home Defense Max in the big spray bottle. It kills them and keeps them away temporarily, but they keep coming back. You have to find where they are coming in and spray both inside and outside.
You could also try Terro liquid. You pour a drop on a square of cardboard and sometimes they will come and gobble it up and take it back to the nest.. mostly not lately though for me.
Mine are in my kitchen and the wife freaks out.. countertop, sink, etc.. I think I found they were getting in behind my dishwasher and sprayed really good around that and under the sink at all the openings for pipes, etc... I haven't seen any in over a week.
Good luck!

I think you are supposed to sprinkle the perimeter with the boric acid.
Also, while not 100% effective, kittehs eat insects. They prefer moths, however. Ants are a bit on the crunchy side.
Thanks, I didn't know about the boric acid. I'll try that too. Also, my kttehs could care less about the ants. Too small and not something they can bat around and play with before they kill it.

For starters, has it been dry where you live, with the heat-wave and all? I had horrendous ant problems a few summers ago when it was really dry and the ants came inside looking for water.
Secondly, chilli powder works somewhat for keeping the ants out if you know where they are coming in.
Third, you may try "bombing" the house. If you're going to be away for a weekend soon, I would suggest this solution as it will kill any large ant populations in your house.
Failing all that...copious amounts of Raid will be your last option.

1. Get some of the Terro borate/sugar liquid ant baits. The concentration of sodium tetraborate in the syrup produces certain death, but allows them to live long enough to carry it back to the nest in their bellies and distribute it. In a few days their entire nest will be exterminated wherever it may be, and you can sneer at them, "ha, you did it to yourself."
2. For instant killing, get some spray specifically made for ants - again Terro is good.
I often start with just the baits so that I can follow the ant trail back outside the house. Within a day you will have a clear trail to follow. I put baits outside on the trail, and then spray them dead on the inside. That way you get fast relief but still kill the nest.
The baits are especially effective on the ubiquitous little black Argentine sugar ants.

Posted by: As If... at July 23, 2011 04:01 PM (piMMO)
I couldn't get my useless cat interested in ants as a crunchy treat and when they found his foodbowl he was so offended at having to share that I had to create a moat around it by floating the foodbowl in a larger bowl of water to keep the ants out.
Better put the sugar and flour in the fridge until the onslaught is over. Unless you like them as crunchy treats, of course.
