— Ace Perry to have a howdy-do with Rudy Giuliani.
They'll probably talk about all the cultural affinities they have in common. That's what I figure.
On the other hand, I should say that while I never previously saw the logic of a fresh Giuliani run, now I sort of do. Giuliani is almost disqualified due to his very soft position on abortion.
However, in a primary, he'd compete with Romney for the establishment/Northeastern Republican type vote. (And not all NE Republican types live in the northeast.)
So he would have a logical niche: Okay, I've got that gay marriage/abortion baggage. But I don't have the RomneyCare baggage.
Now, who wins in that sort of intermural scrum in the moderate division of the primary? Probably Romney, as he's generally been stronger in debates and furthermore has been working hard at this since... well, he never stopped running for President, actually. So he has all sorts of on-the-ground or bank-account advantages Giuliani doesn't and won't.
However, it is possible Giuliani could win the Moderate Playoff, which may be enough to get in.
So yeah, I figure this is what Perry is feeling out Giuliani about. Not sure why Perry really cares, as I can see a case for a Giuliani vs. Romney scrum helping him.
But if Giuliani isn't running, of course Perry will want some high profile endorsements.

Rudy has his drawbacks (a lot), but it is good to remember he's a hell of a speaker when he wants to be. He had a great speech at the 2008 convention, and on a side note did a great job at my law school commencement address.

I still find it funny (and depressing) that the three best '08 Convention speeches were by the guys who ran the two worst primary campaigns, and the noob VP nominee.
And I'm still pissed about that "Fight! Fight! .......in the meantime, I'm gonna go take a nap" bullshit that McLame pulled.

What's more likely to cause a 3rd party run?
a) a Perry/Bachmann ticket
b) a Romney/ Pawlenty ticket?
A Perry Bachman ticket might open the door for a moderate D to run as an I to help Obama.
A Romney/Pawlenty ticket might invite a Tea Party ticket, which would also help Obama.
The last thing we want is a 3rd party candidacy.

Bush 41 was the first sitting VP to be elected Pres since like 1836 and that's only because he ran against Dukakis and had tons of experience prior to being VP.
Unless you feel like retiring or are sure your running mate is going to lose you don't take the VP slot if you intend to run for President in the next 20 years.

Rubio is the iPhone of VP candidates.
Need to appeal to the Tea Party? He's got an app for that.
Need to appeal to Hispanics? He's got an app for that.
Need to appeal to younger voters? He's got an app for that?
Need to appeal to fiscal cons, hawks and social cons? Yeah, he's got an app for those and more.
I think the only nominee who doesn't pick Rubio is Perry. He probably picks a Pawlenty or someone Midwestern to lock in Ohio and keep WI (and to a degree PA) in play.

Plus, it seems that VPs of losing tickets don't do well when they try to run for the big job later on. Edwards, Lieberman, Quayle . . .
I just feel like Bachmann provides the benefits of Rubio electorally while also being someone who would want the job, win or lose. That's why she's running - she doesn't think she can win, but if she can leverage this into a VP slot or a more advanced national profile, it's a hit.
Rubio's waiting for 2016

VP is a good spot for Rubio. He gets to adavnce while arguably saying he has enough experience because there's someone else as President.
Its good for the canidate too who (despite the fact I hate identity politics) can monopolize off the fact that it was the republicans who put the first hispanic on a national ticket.
That and Perry has (from what I can gather) a simial view on immigration as Rubio, who also could neutralize it as an issue. I read somewhere that if McCain had kept the gains Bush made wtih the hispanic community, he'd be hearing "Hail to the Chief" at Wendys right now...

Look, if Rubio is running as VP and the Republicans lose in 2012, does anyone really think that disqualifies him in 2016?
Look at Palin, one of the biggest reasons she is even considered is because she was the VP candidate in 2008.
If McCain hadn't picked her she would still be some unheard of governor in Alaska in her second term.
Rubio being picked as VP would get him national attention and name recognition, even if the Republicans don't win in 2012.

Bush, despite half the country crawling over broken glass to vote against him like nobody since Carter, made gains in every single area and had perhaps the most impressive election results of the modern era (post Reagan).
40-something percent of Hispanics, 12% of blacks, more young people than in 2000, WAY more conservatives, more independents.
If McCain had achieved equivalent numbers in any of those categories (besides indies/Reagan Dems, which he did okay with), we'd be dealing with the most irritating Presidential offspring since Ron Jr. and Patti Davis.
Posted by: The Q at June 14, 2011 01:01 PM (NdE8F)
i think a lot of this VP picking will have to do with Obamas numbers in the coming months.
The eventual VP nominee will have the benefit of sitting back and looking around a few more months.
If O's numbers keep falling faster than prom dresses in May, Biden stays because no one else wants it. Then too people like Rubio will have a harder time turning it down.
If O's numbers rise like a Weiner before a picture shoot, then the opposite is true.
I don't think VPs can pull states or reigons, but they can create a cause for a demographic group to take another look. Of course, they can not like what they see. Sarah did worse with women than with men...

Romney's conservatism is completely questionable, not just his social conservatism. Rudy, on the other hand, has proven to be a pretty solid conservative on everything but social issues. And, Guiliani is a fighter and has a back-bone that I think Mitt is sorely lacking.

Obama last week became the first presidential candidate to name a Latina as political director of a national campaign.

Ace, think bigger. The SW has turned blue thanks to hispanics- Rubio doesn't neutralize that though - he's Cuban. Different ball game.
However, Martinez is a popular governor in New Mexico who, more importantalso popular amongst her resident hispanic population. She delivers New Mexico, neutralizes enough (4-5%) of the hispanic vote in Nevada and Colorado, and the Republicans can eat away into Obama's EVs by 20.
Florida is a given at this point, Ace. It barely, barely went to Obama by 2% in 2008. Nobody- not even Obama's most ardent believers- will tell you Obama is as popular as he was three years ago. Slice off just 1.1% of the electorate and Republicans regain IN,NC,NE-2, and FL for 235 electoral votes.
Rubio wouldn't hurt, but Martinez would pay off better electorally.
Or the mother of all impossible to happen but devastating scenarios- Rubio/Martinez.

Martinez has been perceived, even by her critics, of "cleaning up" the mess left by Richardson. She only won about 40-42% of hispanics in her state- but remember NM is one of those hardcore lefty ones now, so that sort of a showing is all she needed to cruise to a 10pt win in 2010. She carries over her support to states like Nevada, Colorado, even states where hispanic populations are large enough to flip a close race, like Virginia or Ohio, and Republicans win the Bush states AND more importantly prevent the Democrats from "winning the future" with the growing hispanic minority.
Perry-Martinez being too SW? I don't get the perception of Texas being a SW state as much these days. Texas has become its own region in public perceptions.

I have a ski house in northern NM I haven't been to in awhile. One thing I always noticed about NM is the poverty and the lack of repair on any of the public infrastructure. Richardson did a good job screwing that state over, but most of the people I talked to there seemed to be of the "Yes, please more" variety. A lot of positive reactions to Richardson.
I hope she does turn the state around, there are a bunch of people who could use it there.

I wouldn't imagine that either of those groups are so big on Amnesty. I think the voting blocks behind Amnesty would be Mexican/Central American, liberal White drones and big business RINOS. And that's it. It's a relatively small portion of the electorate, and of course the Ruling Class, that's pushing this on America.
