Media Surprisingly Uninterested In Spiking Gas Costs
— Ace

They watched it like a hawk during the Bush presidency, and made sure you knew (or thought) that Bush's policies or lack thereof were driving the price.

Now, not so much. True, this is a mention in the media, but there's a big difference between a non-highlighted print mention and all three network newscasts displaying that Big Scary Up Arrow graphic as they note the rising cost of gas three times a week.

If political unrest in Libya spreads to other oil-rich countries and the ensuing chaos disrupts crude oil production, gas prices could hit $5 a gallon by peak summer driving season, industry analysts say.

I'm sure the media believes this is not Obama's fault. But instead of reporting the facts and either just trusting the public to figure things out for themselves, or offering some spin on behalf of Obama's failed administration, they simply choose to not report the facts in the first place. It's easier that way.

Of course, if the theory that the public will unfairly blame the president for ills not directly under his control is true, that means the media played their favored role as DNC shill by always mentioning oil prices under Bush; but I guess in some cases they don't mind so much if the public draws unfair inferences.

I lived near a guy who had a bumper sticker that said

"Gas was $____ when George Bush took office, now it is $____"

I forget what gas was when bush took office, but he would literally update the actual price of gas with sticker numbers on a weekly bases.

Haven't seen an obama version yet

2 You mean no B-roll of people angrily filling up their big SUVs?

Posted by: Ben at February 23, 2011 08:17 AM (wuv1c)

3 At least in this case the media doesn't have to trumpet rising gas prices. Just about every single person in America deals with buying gas at least twice a week so they have personal experience with the rising gas costs.

Would it be nice if the media would talk about it? Sure, but it's never going to happen so i'm going to be cautiously optimistic that the American people aren't dolts....

4 Add soaring gas prices to the mix and Obama is done.

5 In a way it is Obama's fault. He has the ability to effect this directly. Why hasn't Obama  announced we'll tap the Strategic Oil reserve to stabilize prices? Isn't that the purpose of the SOR, to deal with temporary threats to the system?

10 Boy, if only we had developed more oil resources here in the US 10 years ago, then it would be online now. So, really, 10 years in the future does eventually come.

12 if the theory that the public will unfairly blame the president for ills not directly under his control is true,

This jackass stopped drilling in the Gulf, does everything he can to not issue permits, is held in contempt by a federal judge, still does nothing, won't allow new coal, won't move forward on nuclear, or anwar or oil shale....etc etc....

Damn right he is to blame.

13 Drill, baby, Drill. Not Obama's fault. Hell, he may want to talk about this rather than Public Union funding... although I think he just bleated a bit of irony about DOMA to change subject. The guy is so smart. So smart. One term smart.

14 Oh, and crude is up to $99/barrel right now.

Posted by: joncelli at February 23, 2011 08:32 AM (RD7QR)

15 I know. I keep waiting for the video on the nightly news of an ethnically diverse single mom of 50 kids who works 5 jobs just to put food on the table who will now lose everything because gas went up 2 cents. When Bush was President a similar story was on the news every single night.

Posted by: ParanoidAnxietyGirlInSeattle at February 23, 2011 08:32 AM (RZ8pf)

16 NBC news did a pretty good segment on it last night, and that was worked into a very busy news day. Of course they didn't mention how the administration has contributed by restricting drilling here.

Posted by: rgh at February 23, 2011 08:32 AM (MiBr0)

17 I'm sure the media has no interest in sensationalizing the story now with the bamster in office, but in fairness, the second time around there's always less of a shock factor.  If we start breaking the $4 barrier, they're going to have to start reporting it.

Posted by: Rich C at February 23, 2011 08:34 AM (Vqcn4)

23 Don't forget, the libs all want high gas prices. They wanted to tax the price so that it was high under Bush, then when it started to rise, they blamed Bush and wanted to tax it more.

Now that it is going higher under Bambi, they are getting what they wanted, so this is good news to them and will not be reported.

Posted by: MrCaniac at February 23, 2011 08:51 AM (oREHE)

24 Hey, let's get everyone talking about the defense of marriage act! Then we can completely avoid any attention on unions, gas/oil prices and the middle east!

Not a bad plan, because it will work with the MBM

and by "surprisingly uninterested" you mean expectedly ignoring.

Posted by: MīcÞeMūß at February 23, 2011 08:59 AM (0q2P7)

26 We have to stop looking towards the media to report information. And the Republicans need to roll up their sleeves and start politicizing the economy. It sucks and it's Obama's sucky economy. Talk about it, Republicans.

Posted by: plain ol soothsayer at February 23, 2011 09:01 AM (uFokq)

27 2012 will be like 1992, not like 1980. "It's the economy, stupid." And yes, we will have another Ross Perot-type of 3rd party candidate who will suck the votes away from the out-of-touch Republican nominee. But it doesn't have to be like that.

31 There are times my patience is tested.
This is one of those times.
With America in a depression.
O decides to export American jobs by denying all drilling permits in the gulf.
Ignoring court orders to the point of contempt of the judiciary.
Weakening domestic oil supply; increasing dependence on foreign oil.

And now we have rising oil prices, coupled with crushing unemployment, and the Mideast is in utter chaos.

O's economic policy, O's energy policy, O's foriegn policy. Cutting questions from the MBM ...O.

Like I said sometimes they really try my patience.

32 Also not a peep from AARP on the effect of high gas prices on fixed income retired people who typically drive large sedans.

Posted by: Buffalobob at February 23, 2011 09:12 AM (GwH6h)

33 I posted about this the other morning and mentioned how the media *is* taking notice about the 'pain at the pump.' Because up here in MA where it has been very cold since December, home heating oil is up to $3.71/gal. 275gal tank = $1020 Imagine going thorough a tank every 3 weeks...

40 We need to start being as loud and vocal about issues as the dems, unions, gays, black race mongers, islamists, etc..  We can do it in a civil manner, of course.  It does make a difference what people see and hear.  Study the "bandwagon" mentality.

41 Higher gas prices are just an attack on the poor. Now only the rich can afford it. Also we are told to purchase a new gas efficient car. But with what money? Why does the Obama Admin. hate the poor?

So were the huge "sin tax" hikes Ogabe signed into law within weeks of taking office.  Pretty much any unitized/excise tax on general consumables is regressive in nature.

44 If the MBM thinks that if they ignore it we will too, then they're throwing what's left of their credibility in the shitter.

Of course, the MBM will counter that Americans already know the price at the pump, it's time to move onto informing them of Slutney Spears new CD, Lindsay Lohan's latest drunken crotch shot, Kim Kardashian's new perfume line, or how those evil Rethuglikkkans are oppressing the poor hardworking families in Wisconsin

The MBM is ignoring food price inflation too.

But Helicopter Ben and Turbo Tim say there's no inflation, Paul Krugman, Super Genius says we have deflation. They're the EXPERTS you know, who are you going to believe, them or your lying credit card statements

Has anyone noticed that since the media elected Obama, we no longer have daily death tolls for our military in the Middle East? Apparently we are not losing soldiers in battle anymore now that Barry has taken over and reimplemented the Bush strategy on war in the sandbox.

Or is it just me?
