Mediaite Liberal Hack Spins For Weiner
— Ace

I originally posted this as a "good" article, in that it raised questions about Weiner's cover story.

In fact, Colby Hall spins desperately and stupidly to claim there are reasons to doubt, as he terms them, "the allegations."

He claims -- this is so stupid at first I thought this was a reason to doubt Weiner -- that a hacker would have wanted to get the information out widely, and because the information was only picked up on by a conservative critic who follows Weiner, that means... it was a hack?

What? The fact that a hacker would want this disseminated widely, and yet only one or two conservatives online at that time saw it (remember, this was only up for a minute or so), suggests it was a hack?

What?

How about this: Weiner has only a few conservative followers; his liberal followers would not retweet this; it was a holiday weekend Friday night; few people were actually online; and ergo only a few people saw the image, who would start retweeting it.

If, as Colby Hall stupidly spins, the hacker would have wanted this to go out to a wide audience -- Why didn't the hacker post it during more highly trafficked hours, and why didn't the hacker lock Weiner out by changing the passwords to ensure the picture would be up more than a few seconds?

Calling My Shot: Prediction:

Weiner will claim he doesn't want to trouble the FBI, or the national intelligence/security apparatus, which really should be interested in a hack of a top-secret-plus level clearance Congressman, and will pay a private firm he controls and he pays with his own money, to look into this matter.

48 hours later this firm will announce he was hacked, but beyond that, the trail goes cold. Fiddlesticks!!!

5 My question knowing Twitter is why wouldn't the hacker shoot it out in a blanket with Wiener's name on it? What's clear to me is that this was a messed up direct message to the chiquita. He should have put d her name; instead he put @her name and everyone could see. I have made the same mistake-but not with my trouser rat but my phone number.

6 What Weiner did isn't criminal (yet), but he's "innocent until proven guilty". However, the purported hacker, whose activities would be extremely illegal, is assumed implicitly guilty because Weiner couldn't have done it (he's too smart).

They DO lie most of the time, but in this case it is simple stupidity. If you start with the assumption that Wiener didn't do it, then any rationale to explain it is sufficient to shut down all critical faculties except for breathing and eating. And really, is it so much of a stretch to assume that this guy is just spouting blindly to fill in the blanks?

9 Why didn't the hacker post it during more highly trafficked hours, and why didn't the hacker lock Weiner out by changing the passwords to ensure the picture would be up more than a few seconds? Because the hacker knew that you would be much more convinced that Weiner was guilty if he did it exactly the way he did. And you are!

My point is the quantity of the followers you have in no way guarantees that your tweets will regularly go viral, even when it's a compelling tweet.  By the way, patriotusa76 only has a little over 1,000 followers in comparison.

16 There's no point sparing any more breath arguing about what happened, it's just so obvious - Weiner meant to PM the photo to her, but he accidentally tweeted it - exactly like Jeff at #5 explains. Let's not let this die. It's just way too much fun anyway!

You know, the tweets ace is doing on this is just spot on ball bustingly funny.

He hasn't been this funny since Gleen Greenwald got busted for sock puppeting and ace did his "Inspector Columbo" routine for the first time.

Historical note: One of the first* Official Ace FreakoutsTM occured during that time. Some people were bitching at him, saying they were sick of the "All Greenwald, All The Time." Ace responded that he was sorry that people were getting sick of this, but he was the only one in the whole damn conservative media/blogosphere who was really pushing this, doing research. And if he didn't push it, it would just disappear.

In the process, ace worked himself into a towering rage, crimson with fury, and ended up telling those who didn't like it could go choke on a dick and die. Man, he was pissed.

So, first of all, let me just say, again, bravo on the Weiner's Weiner reporting.

And second, if anyone starts bitching at him about focusing on this too much, two things are going to happen.

First, ace is going to stroke out and die.

Second, his loyal second in command is going to execute the Hammer Down Protocol. Don't be anywhere near the thread when that happens.

*And by first Official Freakout, I mean the first I observed.

75 From his wiki page:

Weiner is known to be one of the most intense and demanding members of Congress. He often works long hours with his staff fact-checking documents, resulting in one of the highest staff turn-over rates of any member of Congress.

Yeah, "fact-checking documents"...

In June 2008, Weiner sponsored a bill that would increase the number of O-visas available to foreign models. Weiner argued that increasing the number of visas would help boost the fashion industry in New York City.

Or boost the Weiner industry...

(Aside: "O-visas"?)

On March 29, 2010, Capitol Hill newspaper Roll Call reported that Weiner had racked up $2,180 in parking tickets in Washington, D.C. between 2007 and 2011.

Here's why I think. This guy is an ass. Nobody likes him. He represents a reliably liberal district. There will be redistricting.

Ergo, he'll be looking at the underside of the bus before too long.

Oh, and this is the downside for the Democrats of a liberal media. If this were a Republican, the guy would have resigned and it would have been old news by this afternoon.

85 CharlieBrown, I actually don't know if I'm serious or not. Whenever I try to prank people here, I try to keep it subtle enough to be believable, but outrageous enough to be noticed. I always run the risk being either immediately unsocked, or completely overlooked. It's a tightrope. Now, with the Weiner case, it would be certainly possible for some conservative operative to believe that the most convincing way to frame Weiner would be to send a dirty picture to a college student the Congressman was already following, but do it on a night that would seem to promise very little chance of success. This would guarantee that, IF the tweet was detected and publicized, the choice of date would seem so improbable as strongly count against a hacking. But the real problem isn't in premeditating that kind of scam and weighing how convincing it might be. The problem is that you have to figure out how to hack a prominent Congressman's Twitter account, risk almost certain detection and prosecution, and do all this despite the fact that the chances of anyone noticing the late-week tweet are very small. That makes no sense at all. And so yes, I actually do know whether I'm serious or not. I'm not.

What Weiner did isn't criminal

Classic case of covering being worse than the original offense.

87 Oh, and this is the downside for the Democrats of a liberal media. If this were a Republican, the guy would have resigned and it would have been old news by this afternoon.

They are counting on this, being a long weekend, not holding up until Tuesday. After all, Ace can only manage to keep this story alive, by himself, for so long without growing weary.

I'm sure they think they can outlast him.

Alas, they have underestimated the fury of teh Ewok.

88 I'm checking my TiVo and my toaster every hour on the hour. The last thing I need is Sheniqua at Morehouse College to get a picture of my johnson. I've never taken a pic of my johnson, but these things appear to come in 3's....................just ask Anthony Weiner.

89 On a positive note, Mr. Weiner's bony legs lend a bit of gracious perspective for the littlest member of Congress.

93 Sure, I'll risk my freedom for the sheer pleasure of hacking a congressman's twitter account during an off time with a "ewww" picture that could have been totally x-rated if I had any brains, which I most certainly do not.

96 @76 What I love is that Weiner didn't even miss a beat when his account got "hacked" Exactly . . . and then he decided to get clever, sandwiching the "hacking" problem between a reference to a Tivo failure and the possibility of a blender attack, and then making a lame joke about the toaster being loyal. He was going for that whole "texture of authenticity" thing. As best he could, with the help of a couple of panicked staffers. Which reminds me. Today my CD player began skipping, an identity thief maxed out my credit cards and drained my bank accounts, and I'm wondering if the can opener is going to give me shock. At least the microwave works.

98 today I felt light-headed, I killed someone with an axe, I stubbed my toe, and worked up a sweat going up and down the stairs; later the power went out at my place.

all in all, in context, an interesting day.  I wonder what Weiner is doing?

99 78 He should have gone the more personal route. He could have used a kit, made a replica dildo of his very own penis and paid someone cash to deliver it with a personal note.

103 Mission: Find a target journalist in the MBM who is the type who would be willing to touch a story like this if pressured. Ace somewhat successfully trolled Ben Smith, but Smith only nibbled, he didn't bite down. And anyway, he had already written a story about it. We need to find some mid-level MBM journalist who has not written about this story yet, and then pepper his/her ass with tweets and emails. Shame the bastard into writing something on the subject, and incorporating the pertinent facts we present into the article. Potential targets, anyone? Someone at CNN, maybe? (You know MSNBC would be a waste of time.) Someone at The Atlantic? At The New Republic? Thoughts?

104 From Mediaite: Its not an exaggeration to say that Wolfe is somewhat obsessed with Weiner; a simple search reveals that, since April, he has mentioned Rep. Weiner 287 times via twitter. Also, skeptics might see that Wolfe and his Twitter clique have been building a narrative about Rep. WeinerÂ’s followers for months, perhaps best evidenced by this tweet to an underage high school girl, who requested a follow from Weiner and got it: I do so love the way Hall glosses over how odd it indeed is that Weiner followed so few people, and at least two of them were hot young girls who expressed interest in him. What got Mark Foley in so much trouble again?

Posted by: MayBee at May 29, 2011 01:31 PM (PLixr)

105 Shit. Ace's hitting Boehner up now.

I'm sure Boehner will follow up. As soon as he's finished with his smoke break.

Love how Colby acts like totally shocked that a guy might mention a congressman 287 times over an 8 week period.  Well, Weiner is a public figure and lawmaker.  Maybe Wolfe is an unhappy constituent.  Or maybe just like one of the few people on the planet who knows and cares that AWwas following a cute co-ed, an underage girl, and a pr0n star.  But to Mediaite, that qualifies as an "obsession."

108 At this point, I don't think the FBI has any choice but to investigate the matter.  Weiner has publicly stated that pretty much all of his social media outlets have been hacked--a serious federal crime--so the FBI is now obligated to get involved. In an alternate universe where Democrats and Republicans are treated equally by the media, a journalist from the MSM would contact the FBI electronic crimes division and ask what action they are taking on this. Here in this universe, however, that will not happen.
