One year ago tonight I had a rough time and y'all were like the family I never had. CDR_M and PAgirlinNC I'm talking to you. And the rest of y'alls too.
I'm thankful for so many things, I won't bore you all by listing them. Instead, I'll open another beer. I love this bar.

Isn't that some weird personal belief system from an old movie? I'm thinking some football flick with Burt Reynolds.

oh, speaking of Kim Jong Ill's timely demise, there are still apologists for his brutal regime.
Apologists For Communist Totalitarianism: I Hate Those Guys An excerpt:
India’s attempt to go it alone failed. So, it seems, has Burma’s. Perhaps inevitably, North Korea’s attempt appears to be tottering. But seeing how South Korea has turned out — its Koreanness utterly submerged in neon, hip-hop and every imaginable American influence, a romantic can allow himself a small measure of melancholy: North Korea, for all its faults, is undeniably still Korea, a place uniquely representative of an ancient and rather remarkable Asian culture. And that, in a world otherwise rendered so bland, is perhaps no bad thing.

The main reason I don't have Skyrim now is because of the Steam issue. I have problems with being forced to use an online service for a non-MMO dvd installed game.
Of course, I have a feeling my grand stand on principle will suddenly become grudging acceptance of the realities of the current PC game market place coincidentally around the time the price hits the $30-35 point and/or the GOTY edition comes out.

Tomorrow SWMBO's family (two sisters, families, and parents) invades our house for Christmas dinner. I'll have the two brothers-in-law to help me set up the new TV - a 43' Samsung flat panel. It's not the monster some have, but it's a major step up from the old CRT model we had.
Merry Christmas to all the Moron Horde (and to the lurkers and the SCOAMF and his family too). You're a truly depraved bunch - my kind of people. You make me think, and you make me laugh sometimes so hard I almost need to change my pants. And both are rare and wonderful things.

It wasn't so much the construction, it was the twenty zillion exits for exit 2 that are only differentiated by the letter behind the number. We were looking for I29N/US71N, I think it's exit 2N or something, they're all jammed together and we ended up in the wrong lane. KCMO sure has changed in the past 27 years (that's about the last time I actually drove I-70 to I-29).

My Christmas wish to yall is world peace. Short of a crystallized glass Middle East this will never happen
so my smaller wish is to see all the crooked politicians made straight. Since this is yet another delusion,
my third level of wish to yall is to see the SCoaMF booted out.
As Mittens is cornering the market on primary ballots, my wishes fail once again.
OK next to last wish. I am throwing out a life line for this one. For congress to grow a set of balls and common decency and impeach those responsible for fast n furious.
As all my wishes for heaven on Earth fail I wish for the sense of eternity to fall on your hearts and to see the need for your own personal savior. Jesus Christ.
Amen

Okay, and you are so right, RushBabe. My good friend and coworker drove down to San Diego with her two young daughters last weekend to pick up a puppy -- a little toy poodle that the breeder had been calling "Sage." They were pretty good with that name, but stopped off into San Juan Capistrano and went into the church to pray. When they came out to continue on their journey and get their long-awaited puppy, the 7-year-old decided that she wanted to name the puppy "Jesus."
Mom was like, mmmmm, not a good idea, darlin'. So, he is still "Sage."

And the little Moron-in-training is a hoot. Little Knucklehead was born about 6 weeks before his brother passed, so Big Brother got to spend a fair bit of time with him (he was a poor sleeper, so he'd often wake up and help me with the little bugger's feedings). I really think he was given to us in part to give us something else to focus on other than our grief. That's why I think God gives us children anyways - to help us forget our cheap inward-focused selves.

Wait till you have to fix the roof. Or worse: replace it. Or have a tree commit suicide by crashing thru your roof. Or your plumbing heads south.
Or you get crab grass.
On the other hand, it is all yours (and the bank's)!

It takes a year or more. During that time your brain literally re-wires. Later on, when someone mentions drink, you get more of a "Meh, that sounds like too much trouble." Or, "I don't really think so...just not appealing." And even, "That sounds gross."
You also become aware of how the first thing that goes (or went) when you were drinking is/was your judgment. It's such a fragile thing, a delicate balancing act between propriety and impropriety. And when your judgment goes, 1) you're not aware of it in the moment, and 2) it's much easier to make bad choices that seem utterly reasonable at the time, like having another or, say, entering into that important conversation now instead of later. In fact, it's so fragile, judgment diminishes long before you even feel the slightest buzz from the first drink.
So. One more time: Remember, you can't see your judgment diminish while it's happening. You can however recognize how this process works after a year or so of not drinking. It does become clear. You see that good judgment is fragile, and that it's the most important thing.
So. I'm not proselytizing. These are just words of wisdom for anyone considering it. It has to be your choice; you have to be ready. If you're thinking about quitting, rest assured these things will all come into focus. Give it time. You will have that clarity of vision that makes you think, "Naa, it just doesn't sound good. Too much trouble." Give it a year or more.
Well, I'm too tired to revise that, but you get the picture.

I didn't know the goofball kept using the 2 bellybutton thing over and over. I only knew about one. I actually remember seeing Johnny Carson interview Mariette Hartley and they were joking that it couldn't mean 2 hearts, it had to mean that mom had 2 uterus's.
I also knew you meant Tammy & Thor, but Barquero was on the tube, so I was thinking about Ms. Hartley and I just couldn't keep the smartass gene in check.

I remember that one. 'Genesis II' was the first, with Alex Cord, trying to launch a series. Then came the sequel with John Saxon replacing him. Less of a believable scientist/volunteer for the suspended animation experiment, but a better choice for action with his martial arts training.
The first one set up a pretty cool premise but had the monumentally dumb item toward the end of a nuclear power plant being sabotaged under the guise of repairs to instead produce a massive detonation. (No mushroom cloud shown but the sheer force of the explosion at a great distance implied it.) There was also the jack of all trades issue. They don't say exactly what kind of scientist Dylan Hunt (Yes, Rodenberry liked the name so much he used it again for the lead character on Andromeda) was but as part of the suspended animation project you'd lean toward something bio related. Not the background for knowing how to weaponize a nuke power plant.
Posted by: epobirs at December 25, 2011 02:23 AM (kcfmt)
It is physically impossible to weaponize a nuke power plant. The enrichment is far to low.
Posted by: Vic at December 25, 2011 02:33 AM (YdQQY)
This is bad plotting, Asking the audience to buy nonsense on top of nonsense. You can ask them to suspend disbelief but not hang it by the neck until dead.
Posted by: epobirs at December 25, 2011 02:38 AM (kcfmt)
The problem is Hollywood writers. First off they are invariably liberal, hence the need to make a bad deal out of the evil nuke power plants. And secondly they are dumber than a creosote post.
This is why I gave up on TV decades ago.

Well, according to the Old Farmer's Almanac this is supposed to be a fairly mild Winter, unlike last Winter. So far, at least here, that is holding up. The average high daily temp here is 63° compared to 48° last Dec. Of course last Dec was abnormally low. 2009 the average daily high was 54°.
Personally I would like it to stay that way, but I somehow doubt that is going to happen.
