69 Hey Peaches!

oh, speaking of Kim Jong Ill's timely demise, there are still apologists for his brutal regime.

Apologists For Communist Totalitarianism:
I Hate Those Guys  An excerpt:

India’s attempt to go it alone failed. So, it seems, has Burma’s. Perhaps inevitably, North Korea’s attempt appears to be tottering. But seeing how South Korea has turned out — its Koreanness utterly submerged in neon, hip-hop and every imaginable American influence, a romantic can allow himself a small measure of melancholy: North Korea, for all its faults, is undeniably still Korea, a place uniquely representative of an ancient and rather remarkable Asian culture. And that, in a world otherwise rendered so bland, is perhaps no bad thing.

The main reason I don't have Skyrim now is because of the Steam issue.  I have problems with being forced to use an online service for a non-MMO dvd installed game.

Of course, I have a feeling my grand stand on principle will suddenly become grudging acceptance of the realities of the current PC game market place coincidentally around the time the price hits the $30-35 point and/or the GOTY edition comes out.

108 So on our trip my sister was in the lead in her car. She had the navigation system. Anyway, going through Kansas City she went through the city instead of around 435 like she should have, and ended up in downtown KCMO. The funny thing is that she's been driving around KC for years, so she shouldn't have gotten lost at all, but she was following the nav system's directions.
I called her on the radio and asked her "Haven't you ever been here before? Fucking tourist!" (she has VA tags and I have NC tags). Then I put my North Carolina hat on so that people would know I wasn't from there.
Going back I led the way around on 435 instead of going through. The nav system did a pretty good job getting us through St Louis, though.

137 It's our third without our son (passed in June of 09 at ten years of age), and the She Who Must Be obeyed seems to finally be able to enjoy the season without the grief sneaking up on her.   But it's good - the little Knucklehead is now almost three, and got all wired up at my sister's house tonight with all the presents, cake, and cousins to dote over him.  Great kid - laughs all the time, and even his "terrible two" moments are pretty mild.  And he still gives a great running headbutt to the groin.

Tomorrow SWMBO's family (two sisters, families, and parents) invades our house for Christmas dinner.  I'll have the two brothers-in-law to help me set up the new TV - a 43' Samsung flat panel.  It's not the monster some have, but it's a major step up from the old CRT model we had.

Merry Christmas to all the Moron Horde (and to the lurkers and the SCOAMF and his family too).   You're a truly depraved bunch - my kind of people.  You make me think, and you make me laugh sometimes so hard I almost need to change my pants.  And both are rare and wonderful things.

It wasn't so much the construction, it was the twenty zillion exits for exit 2 that are only differentiated by the letter behind the number. We were looking for I29N/US71N, I think it's exit 2N or something, they're all jammed together and we ended up in the wrong lane. KCMO sure has changed in the past 27 years (that's about the last time I actually drove I-70 to I-29).

My Christmas wish to yall is world peace. Short of a crystallized glass Middle East this will never happen

so my smaller wish is to see all the crooked politicians made straight. Since this is yet another delusion,

my third level of wish to yall is to see the SCoaMF booted out.

As Mittens is cornering the market on primary ballots, my wishes fail once again.

OK next to last wish. I am throwing out a life line for this one. For congress to grow a set of balls and common decency and impeach those responsible for fast n furious.

As all my wishes for heaven on Earth fail I wish for the sense of eternity to fall on your hearts and to see the need for your own personal savior. Jesus Christ.

Amen

Okay, and you are so right, RushBabe.  My good friend and coworker drove down to San Diego with her two young daughters last weekend to pick up a puppy -- a little toy poodle that the breeder had been calling "Sage."  They were pretty good with that name, but stopped off into San Juan Capistrano and went into the church to pray.  When they came out to continue on their journey and get their long-awaited puppy, the 7-year-old decided that she wanted to name the puppy "Jesus."    Mom was like, mmmmm, not a good idea, darlin'.  So, he is still "Sage."

Posted by: Peaches at December 24, 2011 07:33 PM (kPh2K)

173 @157 Peaches - it's all good.   We know that (1) God loves us, and (2) He's in control.  So, it all will work out.   Its obviously not what we would have chosen, but things move on, and life is good.

And the little Moron-in-training is a hoot.   Little Knucklehead was born about 6 weeks before his brother passed, so Big Brother got to spend a fair bit of time with him (he was a poor sleeper, so he'd often wake up and help me with the little bugger's feedings).  I really think he was given to us in part to give us something  else to focus on other than our grief.  That's why I think God gives us children anyways - to help us forget our cheap inward-focused selves.

We don't do politics in church, but my pastor has said that he's a hard core conservative and always votes all Repub. Our music is contemporary Christian, like lots of other Assemblies of God churches, with guitars (electric, bass, acoustic), drums, keyboard, etc. Contemporary Christian is not my favorite type of music (I'm more of a black Gospel chick), but darn if our band isn't good.

We can bundle up from the cold, turn up the heat a little or stay warm visiting friends and neighbors, but if we can't breathe there is no alternative. Posted by: andycanuck at December 25, 2011 01:36 AM (sHY5w) Yes it is because we would not have been able to get a permit without representation from every community. The hard part was that they are all wearing burqas and someone has to check to make sure they are the correct sex for the activity and under islamic only a muslim tranny can look under the burqa of a muslim tranny so it is kind of a vicious circle - it is complicated but possible.

361 I think it's time to break this one out.

Posted by: cthulhu at December 24, 2011 11:48 PM (kaalw)

362 For anyone thinking about quitting the firewater, I wanted to say something about being on the wagon before I hit the hay here.  It's been two or three years now for me.  What you don't realize when you're drinking (and I was more of the acute variety, not chronic--drinking in either celebration or anguish) is that it's hard to imagine the feeling "damn, a drink sounds good right about now" going way.  Because it really sounds damned good.  But when you're ready to quit, that feeling absolutely goes away over time.

It takes a year or more.  During that time your brain literally re-wires.  Later on, when someone mentions drink, you get more of a "Meh, that sounds like too much trouble."  Or, "I don't really think so...just not appealing."  And even, "That sounds gross."

You also become aware of how the first thing that goes (or went) when you were drinking is/was your judgment.  It's such a fragile thing, a delicate balancing act between propriety and impropriety.  And when your judgment goes, 1) you're not aware of it in the moment, and 2) it's much easier to make bad choices that seem utterly reasonable at the time, like having another or, say, entering into that important conversation now instead of later.  In fact, it's so fragile, judgment diminishes long before you even feel the slightest buzz from the first drink.

So.  One more time:  Remember, you can't see your judgment diminish while it's happening.  You can however recognize how this process works after a year or so of not drinking.  It does become clear.  You see that good judgment is fragile, and that it's the most important thing.

So.  I'm not proselytizing. These are just words of wisdom for anyone considering it.  It has to be your choice; you have to be ready.  If you're thinking about quitting, rest assured these things will all come into focus.  Give it time.  You will have that clarity of vision that makes you think, "Naa, it just doesn't sound good. Too much trouble."  Give it a year or more.

Well, I'm too tired to revise that, but you get the picture.

363 Like I'm so fond of pointing out--as in the Monty Hall Problem thread--when you're in one state of mind, you can't conceive of the other.  Those types of cases in that discussion are more short duration--they're instant--but this is along the same line.

were there any kiddies at the inlaws?  I spent the evening w/ the whole family.  I have a nephew with a 9 mo boy & a girl coming up on 3.  They are still too young to really get it, but they are happy kids so they are fun anyway.  Xmas is so much fun with some youngsters around.

I didn't know the goofball kept using the 2 bellybutton thing over and over.  I only knew about one.  I actually remember seeing Johnny Carson interview Mariette Hartley and they were joking that it couldn't mean 2 hearts, it had to mean that mom had 2 uterus's.

I also knew you meant Tammy & Thor, but Barquero was on the tube, so I was thinking about Ms. Hartley and I just couldn't keep the smartass gene in check.

I remember that one. 'Genesis II' was the first, with Alex Cord, trying to launch a series. Then came the sequel with John Saxon replacing him. Less of a believable scientist/volunteer for the suspended animation experiment, but a better choice for action with his martial arts training.

The first one set up a pretty cool premise but had the monumentally dumb item toward the end of a nuclear power plant being sabotaged under the guise of repairs to instead produce a massive detonation. (No mushroom cloud shown but the sheer force of the explosion at a great distance implied it.) There was also the jack of all trades issue. They don't say exactly what kind of scientist Dylan Hunt (Yes, Rodenberry liked the name so much he used it again for the lead character on Andromeda) was but as part of the suspended animation project you'd lean toward something bio related. Not the background for knowing how to weaponize a nuke power plant.

433 Not the background for knowing how to weaponize a nuke power plant.

It is physically impossible to weaponize a nuke power plant. The enrichment is far to low.

Posted by: Vic at December 25, 2011 02:33 AM (YdQQY)

434 Of course. But even if it were possible, it isn't something I'd expect to be within a bio guy's knowledge.

This is bad plotting, Asking the audience to buy nonsense on top of nonsense. You can ask them to suspend disbelief but not hang it by the neck until dead.

Posted by: epobirs at December 25, 2011 02:38 AM (kcfmt)

435 You can ask them to suspend disbelief but not hang it by the neck until dead.

The problem is Hollywood writers. First off they are invariably liberal, hence the need to make a bad deal out of the evil nuke power plants.  And secondly they are dumber than a creosote post.

This is why I gave up on TV decades ago.

Well, according to the Old Farmer's Almanac this is supposed to be a fairly mild Winter, unlike last Winter.  So far, at least here, that is holding up. The average high daily temp here is 63° compared to 48° last Dec. Of course last Dec was abnormally low. 2009 the average daily high was 54°.

466 The RightWingDaughter and the little Knucklehead just got done tearing through their presents.  Unfortunately, She Who Must Be Obeyed ruled out a crossbow as a present to the little guy.   I showed her that piece about the rock-throwing kids, so maybe she'll reconsider.  After all, he's almost three - about time to start him on hobo-hunting.   We might compromise by getting him ones with the suction cups (I can always fit real arrowheads on them later when the Boss isn;t looking).   We're not too far from Providence.  Unfortunately, the OWStards there are packing up, or RightWingDaughter might bag her first trophy.

467 Thanks for your posts each morning. They have become a part of my mornings. And your post about bicycles is exactly right.

Merry Christmas to all.

Bicycles on Christmas Day!...and if it was snowing -- snow forts and snowball fights!...then talking about being 'snowblind'!  Going inside and playing board games for hours...Vic's (and others) right...not the same at all.  Oh well, the only constant is change...

468 LOL, electronic tiddlywinks. Some things just don't translate to computer well.

As for the morning news I went out and looked at a couple of sites early this morning. As can be expected not too may reporters working today. Besides today is just not a good day for "doomy" news.

Today is a day to be cheerful and thankful for what we have.

So Merry Christmas to all.

469 340 Why can't it just be a simple, understated religious holiday? Posted by: Hollowpoint at December 25, 2011 01:36 AM (X3vSL) Clearly you are not part of the solution. Posted by: @OWS at December 25, 2011 01:45 AM (/izg2) He's precipitate?

470 Unfortunately, She Who Must Be Obeyed ruled out a crossbow as a present to the little guy

Maybe she prefers longbows.

Posted by: Vic at December 25, 2011 04:53 AM (YdQQY)

471 Speaking of crossbows that reminds me of something else that has changed drastically. When I was in HS shop class we had a number of guys who made a crossbow as one of their "projects". Just think how that would go over now.

472 Merry X-mas yall.

More Christmas Critters. This goes with ace previous post.

474 Had a great time with Mrs. Gran's family last night, and today we're off to see my side of the family, a few members of which I'm currently not on speaking terms with.  Should be fun.  Or perhaps not.

Anyway...

Merry Christmas everyone!  Thank you Ace and to my fellow morons & moronettes for the laughs over the past year and the very interesting year to come.

475 Always remember, you might be a redneck (or real American) if bologna's what's for dinner on Christmas.

476 Keep the faith baby!

I unilaterally declare a hobo hunting moratorium is in effect until 0001 tomorrow morning. Give 'em a warm cup of cider instead.

Merry Christmas y'all.

480 Merry Christmas morons and moronettes, and a special Merry Christmas to those serving away from home.

My nephew comes home on leave Thursday so we're having another Christmas on Friday.

A biographic novel about Ginger's sister? (Sorry, I just couldn't resist.)

Merry Christmas from bucolic northeastern PA, everyone. May you be blessed with peace and prosperity today and everyday.

482 I'm glad I found this place 3 + years ago. You all have made me laugh and helped keep me sane — especially during the day when I am surrounded by raging liberals. Merry Christmas to all!

483 I think USA jar's gifts are all moron approved: Nerf crossbow; inflatable boxing gloves (box says "safe" and "choking hazard"); Madden NFL 2010; and jump rope. Ace, thanks for providing a virtual sanctuary of sanity. It's a great gift all year long.

484 Merry Christmas Morons. I love this place. you all are my crazy family of friends who keep me company in the evening when i would ordinarily feel so alone while the guy is deployed. I sit and wait to hear from him while you all keep me company. You make the barely bearable, hilarious, and even fun.

I love you all.
