We've all watched with various degrees of bemusement the smelly retards Occupying ZOMGEverything LOL™. As fun as it is to point and laugh, there is an underlying context that is decidedly not funny.
Follow along and tell me how you think this story ends.
When I was a little girl, there was a show on PBS called Firing Line. Despite the shockingly violent title, which no doubt inspired dozens of lunatics to shoot at Congressmen in parking lots, Firing Line was an erudite, rigorously intellectual political debate program. Each week William F. Buckley would hand economist John Kenneth Galbraith his ass using superior intellect, logic, debating skill and vocabulary.
Back then it seemed that political debate, whether on TV or around the water cooler, was sort of a pedestrian version of Firing Line, civil and polite.
Of course there were still stupid hippies, anarchists and the occasional domestic terrorist/college professor back then but you get the point.
Today's political discourse consists primarily of me telling you that I have your superior intellect, logic, debating skill and vocabulary RIGHT HERE MOTHERF*CKER!!! *grabs crotch*
That last link is safe for work if you work in a whore house.
Sometime a few decades ago the left lost the civil political debate of ideas in this country which is why they no longer engage in the civil political debate of ideas.
More recently they've lost much of their ability to lie through their stinking teeth to try and scare every demographic into thinking that Republicans want to set them on fire, chop their heads off and shove them in a wood chipper.
Their Jedi mind trick skills (TEH SCIENCE IS SETTLED!!1!) are laughably weak.
The left is so stupid and politically inept that they've rendered the rhetorical trump card (RACIST!!1!) completely meaningless.
It seems to me that their rhetorical bag of tricks is empty. So where does that leave them and in turn, us?
When you cannot achieve that which you crave by civil means then other means become necessary. I think that's where much of the left is today. If lying and name-calling can't get you what you want, violence not only becomes acceptable, it becomes necessary.
Being conservative our inclination is to avoid conflict, come to peaceful resolutions and mollify the screaming, spittle-launching douchebag yelling at us because Halliburton something.
For years liberals have taken advantage of most people's peaceful conservative nature by bullying them around in order to get what they want. The thing I like most about Andrew Breitbart, other than his mad-scientist hair, is that he's sick of the shit.
Here he is a few weeks ago.
The point he makes about us having the guns is one I've made for years.
In addition to the guns, we have the farmland, entrepreneurs, tax payers, chicks who bathe, Humvees, cheeseburgers, Ronald Reagan, Hank Williams, Jr. and a whole lot of unaborted babies.
They have all the soy milk, cars that run on poop, gender-studies graduates, patchouli, $10 light bulbs, drum circles, Al Gore, Barbra Streisand and a decades-long record of complete suck.
They're agitating for a revolution and they're going to war with that??
Do you think between now and the election we're going to see the radical left take that next logical step and turn violent on a large scale? Or will their better angels, to the degree they exist, prevail?
I'm of the opinion most days that the left in this country will start the war because they have nothing to lose and the right will win it because we do.

Seriously though, good post and good points.
Clearly there is a lot less political violence on both the left and right versus say the 1960s. This is obviously a good thing.
However, with the crumbling of the liberal dream, an all powerful state, unions, public unions, etc, i won't be surprised if things begin to take a turn for the worse.

As Monty has been pointing out, we're out of money so there is a lot of blue on blue cannibalism. When all people dependent on the state are fighting for a piece of a smaller and smaller pie, there will be those who lose out.
Just look at the protests by teachers in Wisconsin. The protestors have cushy jobs that paid well and you only had to work 9 months a year.
Imagine what happens when people like that are out of a job and really have nothing to lose.
They came closs to physically assualting several of the state reps there.

I would like to agree with you, AllenG, but I think you're discounting the powerful effect of mob mentality groupthink. Individual lefties may have the survival instincts of a rodent on the African savannah, all twitchy and fearful, but in a group of unaccountable, like-minded people, they lose that instinct. Someone starts a chant, a few peopel join in, and soon everyone is howling, "KOCH SUCKERS! DIE, FUCKERS!" as if their life depended on it.
I've previously said that every leftist I've ever met is just one spittle-flecked, red-faced, bellowing groupthink away from homicidal lunacy. Their entire sense of being is structured around their childish, immature, immoral fantasies, and they will not go quietly into the night. This is their religion, as primitive, selfish and bloodthirsty as anything you'll find in the Mid-East.

I'm not saying they won't riot- but that's not "violence," it's chaos. With violent tendencies. For the kind of concentrated violence necessary to fight a war, you need a somewhat clear head. We spend hundreds of thousands of dollars (each) training new recruits in the military to have that.
They may riot, but a riot is a relatively quick thing- especially if the police are allowed to do anything about it. For them to start the Second Civil War, their violence would have to be much more deliberative. That's what I don't think they have in them.

They don't aspire to seize the stuff of billionaires directly because said billionaires would hire Xe or DynCorp and all you'd have is a big pile of corpses that smell only slightly worse than they did before they died. If you think Blackwater did a number on that square in Baghdad, they'd be more than happy to open up on college debtors demanding free healthcare and anything they can carry to the bus that brought them to the Hamptons for some revolutionary looting.
This crowd is not the muscle but they do aspire to be the brains. For muscle, they will try to seize the apparatus of the state. People in uniform, with badges and kevlar and new orders regarding which laws to enforce and how. The circuit breaker in this setup is a mindset like that of the Oathkeepers, where the real sheepdogs refuse to perform "revolutionary" acts. The willingness to perpetrate violence when need be is not exclusive of intelligence, this is one of the differences between an army and a mob.
The nightmare scenario is that a group like these ass-clowns creates such civil disorder that military units are required to enforce something like a dusk-to-dawn curfew. Whether you participated in the violence or not, you're now under martial law. First mission accomplished, now the revolutionary vanguard just has to hold onto political power, co-opt enough of the state security apparatus and things proceed from there.
There are a couple of guys in my town who were contracters in the early 2000s, they taught the Army's Designated Marksman school at Fort Hood. These guys work at a chemical plant during the day, the last quarter of a mile to their house would be pretty deadly for this group of disaffected tribal drummers, maybe half a mile if there wasn't much wind. Comparing the OWS group to an equal-sized group of rural East Texans is not fair, we're better armed and we know how to shoot, they will lose 100 times out of 100. It's a far different kettle of fish to be facing US soldiers intent on "keeping order", even if you weren't the one who created the disorder in the first place. It all comes down to what our troops are willing to do or not do when given a command to shred the Constitution and our way of life. I tend to believe they will not comply.

I'm pretty disturbed about this simply because it hit home yesterday.
I had an email exchange with someone who was promoting this Occupy Wall Street through Move on dot Org. I took exception to it and simply stated that the class warfare they are promoting is dangerous, citing, as one example, the history of the Kulaks in Russia where some 8 million landed peasants (the middle class) were offed because scapegoats were needed.
This person, a middle aged, middle income (as am I) , non union, construction -business- hurting -because- of -the -housing- downturn, responded by hurling insults and lefty talking points about the evil rich, and then proceeded to start inquiring how much money I made, implying I am somehow among the evil rich.
simply because I deigned to point out the potential viciousness of class warfare.
Friends will turn on friends, employees on employers, neighbors on neighbors. Family on family.
It's what Obama needs. A total division, total breakdown, to usher in the new way.
I'm totally creeped out by these people.

Self-defense doctrine combined with magazine-fed rifles is a magical thing. A mob is by definition lethal force. Combine that with a verbalized threat or threatening action and you're cleared weapons-hot. I don't have Rules of Engagement, if the OWS folks want to personally stop by, the more they bring the farther into justifiable use of force I am. And as for this President, his urging would probably only retard the process. If he wants to fuel it, he should ignore it.
Up until the Tea Party, conservatives largely went to work, did their job and rolled their eyes at the TV. The observation above that a horde of them can overwhelm us family unit by family unit is true -- until family units open up with semi-automatic weapons fire, and lots of it. My family is good for 50 or more, and that's before I call some friends. Light a Molotov near my house and you're a fair target. Folks in NYC are in danger from this because their government has so brilliantly disarmed them. Other states or even other parts of New York, not so much.

Worst case, what I see happening as the election approaches are coordinated hit-and-run flash-mob attacks on GOP and Tea Party headquarters and campaign rallies throughout the country, and on election day, a great deal of disruption of polling places in especially close districts. Occasional shooting incidents. Lots of vandalism. What the people orchestrating these 'incidents' won't do is seek head-to-head confrontation with well-armed, determined adversaries.
More guns don't matter. Ruthlessness matters. A willingness to cause injury or death to hundreds of innocent people matters. We don't have that kind of ruthlessness or willingness. They do.
Underestimating these people is a mistake.

Someone upthread said that the political atmosphere today isn't as violent as it was in the 60's. I have to disagree. I've never seen my beloved country so utterly divided. The leftists/marxists have been very successful. Whether there's actually an armed civil war or not, there's going to be some heartbreaking and very dark days ahead.

Even Bastiat exulted in each person's daily life being blessed by others. The Carpenter awakes, eats food grown by farmers, walks streets built by previous generations, etc. His point was that daily life would be grueling if we individually literally had to produce every single item used in daily living without others in society. He also ridiculed his generation touting how life was better a century or more prior, reminding that Paris was a cesspool prior to sewers.
Kids think that anarchy is being a Curt Cobain fan. These protesters' have unrealistic expectations and certainly don't know what words mean. From what I understand, it's hard to be an anarchist. Anarchists are self sufficient. They don't demand anything from strangers. I think that the expectations of anarchists are unrealistic. Anarchy is the most difficult thing to "enjoy" given that you must produce your own living without an organized society based on rule of law. Where the violence will happen for real is if Obama loses and loses big. As in loses the Senate to a fillibuster proof R majority. That kind of repudiation would mean they really have no hope of getting their wishes at the ballot box for at least a generation and probably never since they just had the stars align, giving them House, Senate and POTUS and all they got was a health care bill the Supremes will have likely gutted by then. (Porkulus was nice, but no longterm power there.) If the country finally and completely rejects them they will lose it.
And for that matter, we really should be afraid of what Obama will do between election and inauguration day. Remember Bubba's pardons and other childish antics? He still had hope for a political future for Hillary to hold him back, Obama will have nothing and is a petulant man-child who will have been rebuked like few have been before. Blanket pardons for all minority inmates in federal prison? Throw Israel to the Palis? All sorts of possibilities to do stuff that can't be undone.
