— DrewM Welcome to my second ONT. As befitting a blogger here at the HQ, I put a lot less effort into this one than I did my first one. And it will show.
Someone sent this to me today. It might be old but it's pretty amazing: The Dogs of 9/11.

During the chaos of the 9/11 attacks, where almost 3,000 people died, nearly 100 loyal search and rescue dogs and their brave owners scoured Ground Zero for survivors. Now, ten years on, just 12 of these heroic canines survive, and they have been commemorated in a touching series of portraits entitled 'Retrieved'.
The dogs worked tirelessly to search for anyone trapped alive in the rubble, along with countless emergency service workers and members of the public.
Are you a "Beta Male"? If so, take heart! You might be just one gene away from getting the girl!
Two mice run headfirst into one another in a narrow plastic tube that isnÂ’t wide enough for both of them. One of them must give way. In their earlier encounter, the first mouse exerted its dominance by forcing its rival to reverse down the tube. This time, things are different; the second mouse pulls rank and the first one backs down.Mouse hierarchies donÂ’t change this readily, but the second mouse has been given a boon by Fei Wang at the Chinese Academy of Science. By injecting a single gene into one part of its brain, Wang turned the subordinate animal into a dominant one.

Bikini parades are fine and all, but some of these records are ridiculous. Nobody cares about where or when The Most People Doing X records were set. I just don't find them interesting at all and they're mostly just gimmicks to get people to do silly things.
I enjoyed perusing the Guinness Book of World Records when I was a kid, but if it would have been fluffed and stuffed with such nonsense I would have put it down and never looked in it again.

Gwen Stefani is one of these artists could could release an album comprised solely of her banging pots and pans around and she'd still make considerable bank over it.
With that being said, she would be much better for this season's Superbowl than Madonna, *ugh*.

Strangely, we got our chocolate lab from the ex-wife of someone who was supposedly killed on 9/11. I have the papers from the vet when this guy took him dated 9/10/01.
I have never been able to find his name on any of the lists. Weird story to make up if she did.

Even some of Perry’s fiercest Texas critics say they do not believe he is racist. They point to his record of appointments as evidence: He appointed the state’s first African-American state supreme court justice, Wallace Jefferson, and later made him chief justice. (Jefferson’s great grandfather was a slave, “sold like a horse,” Perry once said with disgust.) Perry’s former general counsel and former chief of staff, Brian Newby, is black; so is Albert Hawkins, the former Health and Human Services Commissioner who Perry handpicked to lead the massive agency in 2002.
“He doesn’t have a racist bone in his body,” said former Democratic state Rep. Ron Wilson, who is black and served with Perry in his early years in the Legislature. “He didn’t then, and he doesn’t now.”
Added Dallas Democratic Sen. Royce West, who is also black: “I don’t agree with him on policy issues, but you can point to many things he has done that were sensitive to ethnic minorities.”…
“He appointed a black man chief justice of the state Supreme Court, for crying out loud, one of the many high-profile positions he’s given to minorities during his time as governor,” Jason Stanford, a Democratic opposition researcher and author of an upcoming book on Perry, wrote in a weekend blog post. “… If he were an n-bomb dropping cracker, we’d all know.”

That's silly, and you know it's silly. Hillary is about 6 million times better than Obama, yes, and she has undoubtedly improved since the days when she proposed her own version of Obamacare, but what she has improved into is a smart machine politician. A machine Democrat is a wholly-owned creature of the unions. I don't see how we can get out of our current rut without something close to a wholesale repudiation of the public unions.

The most common lie in sales. Especially in the construction trades.
You can come into the office drunk and stoned with a human scalp in your breast pocket and a coffee cup full of blood if you make enough sales.
They'll always tell you it is all about family and customer service.
But you better push Granny out of the way and leave your kid standing outside the preschool on the sidewalk in the rain to make a sale.

Nah, you have to know something about the military beyond "They have to do what I say" in order to be a proper fascist. Personally, I don't think he's a socialist either, because that word at least implies that he believes in some form of equality.
What he is, I think, is a no-shit Ceacescu (sp?) communist. Not very smart, surrounded by cronies and yes-men, no real ability to speak of, and firmly believing in his own superiority, and treating the peasantry like, well, peasants.

Hillary hasn't improved so much as shed her skin a few times. She's still the same snake.
She's a fucking horrid Secretary of State. Most people have no idea what that job entails and seem to be prone to make shit up if she's not overtly fucking up. Remember..."Reset button."
Also, her Hillarycare proposals simply evolved into a mandate, which she ran on, and Obama eventually adopted as the centerpiece of Obamacare.
She's still one part of the anti-Trinity, the three aspects of the Devil made flesh.

I took only one biochem course in college for a reason, I didn't want to learn all that crap! But iirc, they get churned through the urea cycle to liberate the ammonia moiety and are then synthesized into simple sugars to be kicked back into Kreb's. And that the process can be reversed, at least for the non-essentials. But I leave that to you, I had better things to waste my mind on in college, like strategies for Worms! Armageddon...

I don't really dispute any of that. But I will point out that there are numbers, like Planck's constant, that can be multiplied by 6 million without obtaining a number of any consequence. Where I see the improvement is that her radicalism is tempered by political practicality, learned mostly from her husband. Obama would never, in a million years, have signed the welfare reform bill that Clinton signed. That doesn't make me a Clinton fan, but it does matter when I turn to the subject of ranking levels of evil.

I think I'd diagnose Primary Fever here. Sure, their barbs are mostly aimed within the party at this point. Sure, it would be nice if they would artfully turn all questions in Obama's direction, as Newt does so well, instead of bickering. But it's pretty natural in a hard fought primary. Me, I'm reasonably optimistic at this point, and willing to trust the process. We've got a damn strong field, IMO, and I'm feeling a lot better than I was in those races that turned up McCain or BobDole because it was about their turn, and there was nothing better to do.
Meanwhile, the Adversary is messing up big time, utterly unable to change, playing to his ridiculous hippie base that doesn't even much like him any more because he doesn't kick ass like Che did.
Look, part of the reason there's so much bickering is that everyone can smell the blood in the water. The odds that the Republican nominee will be the next President are better than in any contest since 1980. So, like so many Democratic primaries in the Northeast and California, what we're likely looking at here is the real election.
Here's Victor Davis Hanson with a cheering column (note the URL, I made it for you).

Posted by: Rum, High Functioning Sociopath at October 03, 2011 06:50 PM (YxBuk)
I'm having second thoughts about primarying JEF:
- If he wins, he's stronger, as he will be seen to be a victim. F&F might not then be quite the career-ender and ticket to a concrete room that it should be.
- If he loses, then the motivation for cleaning up Obamacare, investigating F&F, and then tracking down the Porkulus/Pigford/Solyndra/ .... money becomes uninteresting for the Ds ... and the Rs might go along with the Ds again.
But an un-primrayed JEF has no excuses ... and the R candidate will need to push Obamacare/F&F/Porkulus/Pigford/Solyndra/etc. to win.
If the R candidate wins, then delivering on cleaning up Obamacare etc., will have to happen.

I've had similar thoughts. But what I don't understand is why the "leave me the hell alone" impulse, which should, at least, lead one to small government and low taxes, isn't more universal. That doesn't take tons of thought, it just takes some mental boundaries around yourself and your family.
If I had my way, the most shameful human emotion, the one that should never be indulged, that should always be shunned and shamed, would be envy. It's at the root of the socialist impulse, and it's unworthy of adult human beings.

Note - I've always wondered what kind of book would be produced from a King/Koontz collaboration, given how these authors differ in so many ways. For example, King always concludes his stories by something large exploding, while Koontz ends the vast majority of his books with some cutesy "happy" ending.

#269 - Tammy, whenever I hear that song I think of being in my favorite bar in CA with a bunch of other drunks, somebody popping some dough in the jukebox and playing that song, and the entire place joining in, with special gusto on that verse! Good times!
Now, I do my drinking at home because it's cheaper. And I have the ONT as company.
It ain't no good life, but it's my life - Hey, somebody should use that verse in a country song!

I dunno Rum, a lot of psychologists would argue that maintaining the status quo is mentally easier than further liberalization. There's truth to the axiom that any jackass can be against something, that it takes courage to be for something new.
We would be having a very different conversation, assuming a site like this was even possible, if we lived in, say, Iran. People who hold the general principles of this site would be held out to be liberals or even revolutionaries for believing in fundamental rights independent of Sharia law.
I guess my point, if there even is one, is that liberalism versus conservatism don't represent default versus "thinking" states, they're just labels whose meanings change depending on the context.
Posted by: Conservative Crank at October 03, 2011 07:03 PM (vNpDB)
Easy. You'd have the TV miniseries adaptation of The Stand, which ended with both a large explosion and a cutesy happy ending that ruined the whole point of the novel.

The country is still there. It's the massive, intrusive government layered on top of it that's the problem.
Worst case, we run out of money, and radical change in the size of government suddenly becomes mandatory, plus we get a vivid reminder of why we wanted a strong military. I'm confident we can survive that worst case. I'm less confident that we can see it coming and avert it, but I think it's possible. We're less complacent than other cultures, and just because the awakening is coming late in the game, doesn't mean it's not happening. A little hope is good for the soul. I do hope, and I also believe that it will be impossible to write the history of these times, 30 years from now, without talking about the Tea Party, and how it was the beginning of something that got us back on track.

I didn't mean liberalism as a political label so much as a state of mind, I suppose. Most people like to do things that make them feel good. If you ask your average non political person simple questions like, "Should we help the homeless?" or "Should we help disabled people?" or whatever, unless they're a sociopath, every person who say yes. Well, all of those things make them feel good and they don't care how the issue is taken care of, only that they still feel good about themselves.
I mean, just look at these Occupy Wall St idiots. They want to "make love, not war" and "don't hurt the bunnies" or whatever 60s tripe slogans they're flinging around. It's all meaningless but it comes down to making them feel good.

There also an epilogue where Randall Flagg (now sporting a new name) now finds himself in a tribal village, scheming to regain power.

Well, sure, but we don't have that. So we get the simplistic questions with the simplistic answers. That also circles back to my point about how conservative thinking requires actual thought. Most people aren't going to take the extra steps to think about it; it's just taken at face value.
I find it funny that if you ask college students to share their GPA points with other students they'll scream bloody murder, but they scream at you for being greedy for not wanting to spread the monetary wealth around.
Anyway, I don't want to get into the minutae of all of this (it's the ONT for God's sake, we need more boobies). I just wanted to point out that it's easier to be liberal that it is to be conservative.

Well what about it being the same mechanisms that liberals engage in for their other stuff. Didn't you mention a friend that had asthma or some other ailment and yet she was all for getting rid of people that were too unhealthy to be a burden on the medical system or whatever? The same sort of thinking would basically apply: Having the government to do all the feel good bullshit they want but that's for "everyone else." They don't personally need the assistance so they would be left alone.
Just the lazy thought process where they don't take their ideas beyond the simplistic.

FDR was an interventionalist, even if he fed isolationist meat to the masses. He was a superb politician--middling at best as a leader, but he knew how to play the public like a piano.
Willkie was a bit of a squish, in that he went between isolation and intervention based on trying to sell himself to both sides, and ended up winning neither.
Also, I take issue with you calling the North Atlantic campaign pre-1942 a secret war--the legality of it certainly questionable, but that it was going on was well-known, as there was even a song about the Reuben James long before the formal war declaration.

So how does the book end?
At the end of the miniseries, Stu is wondering whether humanity is doomed to repeat it's cycle of destruction all over again. Fran says "I don't know.... but she does!" as they look in at their newborn daughter and the spectral image of Mother Abigail appears to suggest that Yes, Everything is Going to Be All Right.
At the end of the final chapter of the book, Fran simply replies, "I don't know." There is then an epilogue that leaps thousands of years into the future, in which humanity indeed has destroyed itself once again and the reincarnation of Randall Flagg arises from the ashes to take command of what is left.

Foreign policy-wise, the US has confirmed that that Pakistaini border units have exchanged shots with Afghani and American patrols on several occasions this year.
The US-Pakistiani "partnership" continues to decay. Pakistan has been playing both sides for a while now and its time we developed a better relationship with India to not only counter Pakistani but also China.

It is interesting that the DOJ went after Arizona's immigration issue early on in the Obama admin. Perhaps to scuttle any F&F interference? The map from a prior post shows the guns moving from Arizona. Maybe Brewer was on to something.
The Middle East is a truly disorganized place in this world. Control through thuggary (sp), coersion, bribes, and poverty & religion. I honestly do not know why Obama thought the Arab-spring would really create Democracy in that part of the world. Allowing them to gain strength all the while holding down USA will eventually harm Isreal and then us.

Exactly and of course the Pakistanis weren't "satisfied" with the land they got, although the creation of a separate Muslim state out of India was demanded by the Muslim league as early as 1930.
The biggest concern right now about Pakistian is their nuclear weapon stockpile and if it may fall into the likes of the Taliban. IIRC, the Pakistianis have a sizable nuclear stockpile of approximately 60-100 warheads (about 30-60 kT) and several missile designs capable of delivering them to a target several thousand kilometers away.

Kratos: In terms of the splitting of a region, how come the Palistinians got the shaft? No one seemed to step up and help them (accept them into their country). Were they awful from the git-go?Oh boy, I'm at a loss as to how to answer this question without making into a long drawn-out missive...
For starters, what is a "Palestinian"? The answer isn't as simple as you may think - this geographic term for a people residing in that area was popularized by Yassar Arafat after the 6-Day War, however, you can find old newspaper articles from the early 1900's describing Jews who were buying up areas of the Holy Land (at inflated prices from their Muslim owners - Jerusalem in particular was desolate during this time, look up Mark Twain's description of this area during his trip).
The best answer is that the "Palestinian" people, as we know them, are essentially a weapon wielded by the surrounding Muslim states in order to defeat Israel via diplomatic means because they couldn't defeat the Jewish state militarily. The Palis are fed a steady diet of hatred and Islam-ism by the likes of Hamas and even Abbas' organization, Fatah. Look up some of the stuff Palestinian children are taught in schools - it will make your blood run cold.
Thus the Palis aren't really interested in their own state unless the Jewish one is destroyed in the process. Don't believe me? The Palestinians were offered approximately 98% of what they wanted, both during and after Arafat's reign (of terror/error), and they still refused to deal with Israel.
Besides, the true "Pali" state should be Jordan.

No. This won't solve anything.
Once upon a time the Jews were the Muslims of the Hellenistic world. They revolted against the Greeks. They rioted in Alexandria and Antioch; Tacitus and Suetonius tell us that they caused trouble in Rome itself. Then they revolted in Judaea again. Under Trajan they revolted all over North Africa. Then they revolted in Judaea, one more time, against Hadrian. Hadrian lost patience and, with Iron Age tech, nuked Jerusalem. It took centuries but eventually the Jews figured out that their God didn't demand that they take over places like, say, Libya.
Note that Hadrian didn't succeed at wiping them out.
Muslims are more numerous and have a wider strategic depth now than the Jews had during the "Diaspora Revolt". They had an equal commitment to their scriptures as the Jews have to theirs.
To sum up: nuking Mecca won't fix the problem.

Khomeini got in because he was the last man standing who could promise (1) order (2) unity (3) no more Shah and (4) no Russians. By "last man standing" I meant that he was more ruthless than the other 1-4 options. Even the mullahs were scared of him

That's off-topic to what I was trying to say. I was trying to draw an analogy between (the aggressive faction of) first century Judaism (which no longer exists) and modern-day Islam. I was not saying anything about whether Judaism is good or bad. Also I was not trying to say anything about Jewish claims to their historic homeland; on that topic I am firmly Zionist.
And now I feel like I need a shower.

Hopefully there will be an Israel for them to stay in. Ultimately I think you're right, though; the Jews are history's most resilient people, and not to get all preachy but I do believe they are God's chosen people - the Bible is crystal clear on this point.
But they are surrounded by lunatics and their citizen resolve is weakening. It really wouldn't suck if the U.S. and Western Europe would pull their heads out on this issue.

Yeah, there were and are plenty of those guys, but there also were and are plenty of very good people in Iran who just want a normal life. In fact, many do not want Islam to be a major part of their lives. Many prior to the revolution were not particularly religious, and that the Islamists saw them as elitists was a source of great anger.
Iran in the late 70s had a lot of problems, to be sure, but they were on the right track in most ways. They easily could have become one of the brightest and most advanced nations on the planet. Like Japan or Germany, they have great pride and resourcefulness. Unfortunately, they are ruled by monsters now.

The really scary part of all of this "Arab spring" is the calculated removing of despots that protected Isreal to a certain extent. Look at Turkey now. I shudder to think what Obama and the Alinsky-ites along with the Muslim-Brotherhood have in store for the Jews. Testing the waters for a comfort-zone is happening now.

In a nutshell, the eldest son of my second closest friend is becoming particular in his attentions. He's 19, has a girlfriend.
I have been inclined to blow it off as him merely being concerned about me during this gimpy period I'm going through ( I was in the room when he was delivered, and we have always been close) but Thor is beginning to be bothered by it. He comes over a lot, and often times during the day.
Now Thor is inclined to be jealous, but he says he doesn't think he's overreacting, that he feels this kid is trying to hit on me.
Should I talk to the kid, or let Thor??? Thor would be nice about it, I'm not worried about that..... but would it be better coming from me?? I oculd just tell him that Thor is upset by it, right?

That part there is a problem, and you (not Thor) should put a stop to it. He is hitting on you, or he wouldn't be there (nineteen year old guys don't hang out with older ladies for long unless they're trying to tap it).
Don't make it worse by telling him Thor has a problem with it - he does, I'm sure (I would), but the problem is yours. Keep brushing off his visits until he comes to his senses, and if need be just sit him down and shoot him straight. If the old man does it he'll be embarrassed forever and won't want to come around even for the right reasons, and I'm guessing you probably don't want that.

IIRC, Sikhism rose as a response to the constant threat coming from central Asia. The Afghan people used to regularly ride out to rape and pillage the neighboring areas of Persia, Russia and India.

We did this once already. I even gave you a link to the statute which controls appointments of Special Prosecutors.
They're appointed by the DOJ primarily to avoid the appearance of impropriety/conflict of interest.
Its an executive branch power. Not the legislature. Not the judiciary. I remember others opined otherwise. But you don't have to take my word for it, look up the statute yourself.

Otherwise, Hi Everybody. My mom cursed me when I was a bad kid, she used to say I can't wait for you to have children and then laugh manically. Now I know why and they're only 6 and 4.
My mother said she hoped I had one just like me, and I did. I don't think she realized how often she would be babysitting. I am the one laughing maniacally.

There's no historical precedent for not trying articles of impeachment--I found two cases where an impeached trial did not go forward because the individual in question was already removed from office. In theory, I suppose it could be tabled like other business, though that would be political suicide for the presiding officer who might then face impeachment himself for dereliction of duty.
Incidentally, Senate bylaws might not allow tabling of impeachment articles--however, I can't easily locate the Senate bylaws on the web to look into that.

You're both missing the point. There is no Constitutional requirement for the Senate to respect articles of impeachment sent to it by the House. It can smile, say "That's nice" and throw them right out the window, and there's not a thing anyone can do about it.
Impeachment has only happened twice, and in both cases both chambers of Congress were controlled by the same party.
Today, the Democrats control the Senate, therefore impeachment articles against a Democrat president will not move forward in that chamber. Period.

yeah, with Essentials it's either it doesn't find shit or it gets a false positive on something somewhat important. For free stuff, I prefer AVG and Malware but AVAST isn't bad. If your looking for something that you pay for, Kaspersky is the goto but it's not the most user friendly
Mr. Dude,
Thanks. I used to have AVG and I can't remember why I switched, but I think it was just getting a new computer.

But the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court presides over the trial. Isn't a moot point which party controls the Senate? Senators have the final say but it's the Cheif Justice running the show.

You're both missing the point. There is no Constitutional requirement for the Senate to respect articles of impeachment sent to it by the House.
I certainly didn't miss your point; I'm questioning your point. I don't believe a motion to table an impeachment would be in order in the Senate. And one call during "normal business hours" tomorrow should clear that up for me.
It's actually a really good question.

Harry Potter now. It was Twilight a few years ago, but she is over vampires. I hate to admit it, but I don't even know how to go find it to see what she writes.

Impeachment of a President has only happened twice; the House has filed impeachement articles 17 times for other federal officials, including a senator and a Cabinet secretary. In two cases they did not proceed to trial, once because the senator charged was expelled from the Senate prior to hearings, and once when a federal judge resigned and the Senate deemed it no longer had jurisdiction. I haven't looked, but I'll wager right now that in at least one of those occasions the same party did not control both chambers.

@Robert, you're right in regarding an impeachment trial of a President, however the Chief Justice does not get to set the Senate calendar--he can't show up one day and declare the trial open.
That being said, I'm curious to see if the Senate bylaws would allow parliamentary procedure to kill a trial--but as I said before, and Merovign also alluded, even if that is the case no sane Senator would do so because the electoral consequences would likely be best described as "unprecedented bloodbath".

Maybe some information here could help. It is all pretty much greek to me especially the senate rules on impeachment.

Actually I thought we were discussing the impeachment of any executive official, since that was Dell's original hypothetical, and the question was raised if the Senate could table the impeachement.

GMB, that link was pretty helpful actually. As I understand, once the House presents Articles of Impeachment, the Senate is pretty much locked into proceeding with the trial by the bylaws. It appears that Article III allows for some kind of recess for other business if voted on by the Senate. Article IX, however, also states that all other business of the Senate is to be suspended prior to the trial opening. I guess that Article III is to prevent a suicide pact (i.e. a motion could be made to recess if we were invaded so that Congress could declare war, etc.).
Bottom line though, is if the House brings impeachment articles to the Senate, Harry Reid is powerless to stop the train leaving the station, no matter how many votes he has.

This group of states acted selfishly and with premeditation caused the Federal Government to resort to military intervention to prevent their reaching their goal of independence and self government.
Of course, I'm referring to the War between the North and South.

For safe use M1 and M14 rifles require ammunition with military-type insensitive primers. There is some civilian ammunition that can be used, but much of it can't be used safely due to risk of "slap-fire," where releasing the bolt to chamber a round will cause the weapon to fire.
The firing pins on these rifles are not held away from the primer by a spring - they are loose inside the bolt. Releasing the bolt allows a light strike by the firing pin. Military ammo can take it - but a lot of civilian ammo is risky.
