More Adult Stem Cell Therapy Progress
— Dave in Texas

Amazing stuff. Rebuilding damaged heart muscle following a coronary attack.

Seeking to reverse heart injury, Dr. Marban used a catheter with tiny pincers to snip bits of healthy tissue from Milles' heart. Since the heart produces so few stem cells on its own, Dr. Marban in a laboratory coaxed the bits of tissue into manufacturing millions of stem cells .

He then deposited Milles' own laboratory-grown stem cells into the damaged area of his heart, hoping it would repair itself and beat more strongly. Previous studies have used bone marrow stem cells with mostly disappointing results, prompting Dr. Marban to try this new approach.

Mare over at The Hostages linked me this one about treating arthritic knee joints. I have one of these and oh hell is it giving me fits (cold front approaching, it's like a barometer or somethin). Stem cells siphoned from tummy fat and injected into the inflamed knee joint, slowing and even halting the destruction of cartilage in the joint. Cells from tummy fat! I could save both my knees. Hell, I got enough tummy fat stem cells to save three thousand knees.

It's remarkable that all these recent advances seem to have nothing to do with embryonic stem cells, and everything to do with adult ones. Thank goodness we don't play politics with healthcare.

...

Oh.

Well darn.

1 Funny, CBS News didn't mention whether adult stem or embryonic in the broadcast.   Minor detail.

My gluttony and sloth has a purpose - I'm a repository for fat-derived adult stem cells!

3 Seriously, I'm glad this kind of research is getting attention.  It shows that we have more potential regenerative ability than previously thought.  Think about it - customized tissue without the need for massive immunosuppression.

Pretty much spills it, doesn't it, Chris? This was never about science, never about medicine. It was all about protecting the sacred right of women to execute their unborn kids for the crime of potential inconvenience.

Any opposition to that must be squashed, even if it means you have to deliberately conflate adult and fetal stem cell research -- assuming you bothered to look up the distinction.

Good thing we have all those embryonic stem lines to research with, those adult stem cell research proved to be a bunch of crap.

Oh, wait, strike that, reverse it.  And pro-choice people wonder why us pro-lifers go nuts about sacrificing embryos for this type of research when everything we know says it is unneccesary.  You don't need totipotent embryonic stem cells when we already have the technology to reset adult stem cells to a multipotent state, which is all you need for any particular tissue and for the majority of organs.

91 Oh... NadeK is indeed the dum-dum. Time to break out /b/tard's classic again. HIT IT:

On the Jersey Shore in a bathroom stall
In the midst of graffiti scrawled
There's a hole in the piss-stained wall
That's where you put your dick

And there's a loser behind this glory hole
And he really loves to smoke some pole
When you're done on the toilet bowl
He's there to suck you off

The hobos say "Dum Dum you give great head
You're our favorite little bitch
You could probably suck the chrome
Off a ball hitch"

Dum Dum's shift goes all night long
Ten straight hours of sucking dongs
At three AM he's still going strong
And he swallows every time

A man came in from off the street
with fourteen inches of swingin' meat
Like a puppy on its mother's teat
Dum Dum started to suck

With eleven inches down his throat
Dum Dum gave it a backhand stroke
At thirteen inches he started to choke
So he finished with his hand

The hobos say "Dum Dum you give great head
You're our favorite little bitch
You could probably suck the chrome
Off a ball hitch"

Dum Dum really loves his job and he's saving up his cash
He's hoping someday he won't have to eat out of the trash
And Dum Dum got a second job besides the glory hole
By day he works for Axlerod as a troll

In the morning when his shift is through
Dum Dum goes home and sniffs some glue
And thinks of all the men he blew
while he's beating off

The hobos say "Dum Dum you give great head
You're our favorite little bitch
You could probably suck the chrome
Off a ball hitch"

The hobos say "Dum Dum you give great head
You're our favorite little bitch
You could probably suck the chrome
Off a ball hitch"

104 It is in fact a full life. When do you, wise Donkey, decide that it's a full life? Is there a magic day? Look, just own up to it. It's killing. What's worse is, it's creating life on purpose - human life - just to destroy it and EVEN WORSE - no successful therapies have been even found for all this. What a waste. You are.

Arthritis Cure

If you are having arthritic joint pain, drinking a half-glass of tonic water (with quinine) once a week will make it go away.  (It will also "reset" your metabolism, giving you more energy, reduce depression, and help you to lose weight.)

Side effects:  It tastes nasty.  And it won't help you get laid.

Bottoms up, morons....

126 I read an article some months back about this on Maxim, they were sending the cells to Israel and you got the treatment in the Dominican Republic. They've been pushing for approval for years but the govt won't allow it to go to trials since there isnt a big corporation behind it to pay people off

127 On the one hand I hate abortion and think it is immoral, but if it eliminates mostly liberals, resulting in fewer proudonkeys .... it isn't all bad. Any mother that can kill her growing baby probably shouldn't be putting her genes in the gene pool. Just sayin'

Posted by: conservative-guy at November 14, 2011 08:24 PM (RQxfx)

128 The only embryonic stem cell success story I've ever read of  (in the Smithsonian magazine) involved some eye material that -- what do you know -- was one of the few kinds of human cells that never renewed its numbers: what you were born with was all you ever got. And even then their research was derailed for years because a test subject died of a cancer that their earlier experiments caused. I can't help wonder if embryonic stuff is at just too early a stage of development for the replication/cancer risk ever to be resolved. But of course liberals have fallen in love with the idea of some magical Play-doh you can make into anything, so bugger actual scientific results (multitudes of adult stem cell cures [my husband among the beneficiaries by the way] VS one limited success amid teeming mounds of tumorous growths) even as you claim to be "pro-science".

Posted by: VM at November 14, 2011 08:59 PM (AyryN)

129 The GOP should be broadcasting this sort of stuff up front -- there's difference between adult stem cells and embryonic stem cells.  One works, one doesn't...  Whether it's pipelines of oil from Canada and the Dakotas, market based health care reforms, or stem cell research, the GOP supports stuff that actually works and creates jobs...  Liberals -- not so much.  Success only counts if it funnels money into blue or green pockets...

130 Embryonic stem cells are a hoax. They aren't nearly as useful as adult stem cells. Every medical advancement based on stem cells has come from adult stem cells. It's just common sense; your body will not reject its own stem cells! Embryonic stem cells are all about trying to form a morally justifiable argument in favor of abortion.

Interesting time for this to show up. Geron is packing it in on embryonic stem cell research.

The article completely ignores that much of the companies problems are due to its insistence on pursuing the embryonic approach and that it could have avoided this easily. If any of the trials prove out you'll see a rush to restart them using adult cells. A delay that could easily have been avoided.

One of the participants tries to raise the specter of China taking the lead in biotech but who really cares? There are all sorts of interesting medical applications for having no moral barriers whatsoever. For all we know, the leaders of China maintain farms of children created to be their future organ donors, or some other 'Bug Jack Barron' scenario. The fact is, any demonstrated success with embryonic cells can also be pursued with treated adult cells.

Somebody desperately awaiting a treatment right now may object to anything that slows down the rate of research but a century from now, when the treatments will likely be common, I suspect the recipients will appreciate being able to look themselves in the mirror everyday rather than feel nagging doubts about the human cost for the rest of their days.

132 There's probably a larger point to be made about conservatives vs. liberals (we're interested in results, they're interested in 'good intentions') which I should have made last night, but I'm an idiot.

Posted by: Dave in Texas at November 15, 2011 04:16 AM (WvXvd)

133 Isn't it amazing that so much success comes from adult stem cells which hurt noone to harvest, and so little from embryonic stem cells which require killing a human embryo - yet ObamaCare would prohibit using treatments that come from adult stem cells?
