More Leaked ClimateGate Emails Suggest Politics Reigned In "Science"
— Ace

A few more of these. Some of these snippets are so blatant in showing bias I worry that they are, actually, taken out of context.

The emails paint a clear picture of scientists selectively using data, and colluding with politicians to misuse scientific information.
‘Humphrey’, said to work at Defra [UK's Department of Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs], writes: ‘I cannot overstate the HUGE amount of political interest in the project as a message that the government can give on climate change to help them tell their story.

'They want their story to be a very strong one and donÂ’t want to be made to look foolish.Â’

Professor Phil Jones, director of the Climatic Research Unit at the centre of the affair, said the group findings did stand up to scrutiny.

Yet one of the newly released emails, written by Prof. Jones - who is working with the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) - said: 'Any work we have done in the past is done on the back of the research grants we get – and has to be well hidden.

'IÂ’ve discussed this with the main funder (U.S. Dept of Energy) in the past and they are happy about not releasing the original station data.'

That's the one I worry about. It seems so blatant.

However, Jones has frequently before made "intellectual property" rights claims over the raw data, insistent that only he and his fellow cultists could examine the actual data. This could just be an advisory to always keep their Golden Goose hidden from outside observers.

Some scientists weren't completely comfortable with the deceptions:

One nervous scientist wrote: 'The figure you sent is very deceptive.'

'I also think the science is being manipulated to put a political spin on it which for all our sakes might not be too clever in the long run,' wrote another.

The lead author of one of the reports, Jonathan Overpeck, wrote, 'The trick may be to decide on the main message and use that to guide whatÂ’s included and what is left out.'

"Science" is always about political messages, and tailoring releases to buttress those messages. Duh.

A global warming believer, Clive Cook, has reportedly said:

'The closed-mindedness of these supposed men of science, their willingness to go to any lengths to defend a preconceived message, is surprising even to me.

'The stink of intellectual corruption is overpowering.'

Not so much to me anymore.

3 Politics? Hell for the scientists it was money. For the politicians it was money as well. Our money to their causes, primarily communism.

All except for the 3rd world ass wipes in the UN. Then it was our money to their country and then their pockets.

If this were a sane world, these two sentences would be enough to strip Prof. Jones of any academic standing.  Science is meant to illuminate, not hide.  One cannot release figures and then conveniently not release the original data from which those figures were derived from upon request.  Imagine if some grad student had tried that stunt with their adviser.

As for DDT the original EPA team that examined it said that there was no evidence that warranted removal of it. Then the new head Rucklesnot over-road them and ordered it banned anyway.

That set the tone for the EPA from the start.

But the real scientific community works in the labs of places like IBM, Dow Chem, and other firms.

52 The closed-mindedness of these supposed men of science

I remember libs ever so smugly sneering at military intelligence and calling it an oxymoron.  Strangely, they are silent on the notion of "scientists" with a political agenda.  If your work has a political agenda, you aren't a scientist.

The damage done here is greater than many realize.  Science itself is now suspect.  Not to worry though, I'm sure crystals and feathers will provide an adequate substitute.   Look out, China!

56 When the politicians decide which science and scientists to fund - science becomes heavily politicized. Alarmism can be helpful in getting a slice of the pie and then of course we have the fact that there are plenty of commies in politics today and commies do love that AGW theme since the suggested cures all involve weakening capitalist leaning economies.

60 As a former science teacher, and geek in general, this really chaps my hide.  Science research should never get so tainted by politics.  What these researchers have done is help taint the trust.  What happens when the science data shows a real threat?  Will people listen, or just assume the scientist are promoting a political agenda.

I've been looking at the topic of global warmer since the 80s and I have flipped on the subject about 5 times.  What's the cause, is it really happening, how fast, how severe... there are many questions to bounce around.  Unfortunately, the left has hijacked the issue so they can implement they're big government solutions.  Big government solutions have always worked so well in the past, why not use big government - savior of the world.

You forget that global cooling was being blamed on ... you guessed it, BURNING FOSSIL FUELS!!  Back then, it was that the particulates (from generating the energy Man needs to advance) blocking out the sun that would take the Earth into a deep freeze, so we had to stop generating energy or else the Earth would freeze to death.

But .... sadly, the Earth never froze.  Hearts were broken.  Psyches were crushed.  But, then, we had a few hot years and the game was back on.  Now, instead of little particulates blocking out the warming rays of the sun, the sun was found to have no effect on climate, at all, and the life-giving CO2 that plants required was found to be the death gas of the planet.  Therefore, even though the scientology of climate predictions had been 180 degrees wrong (by the scientologists' own claims) ... we still had to stop producing the energy that Man needs to survive and advance, or else the Earth would burn to a cinder.

Sure, it sounds so stupid that no self-respecting person would ever try to pull such a con ... but it turns out that the world's average IQ is actually much, much lower than any previous estimates had even come close to, so this all worked out okay for the climate scientologists.  And, like it or not, they're probably going to get another act, too.

   Once more.

Global warming and cooling has occurred periodically over time. Enough verifiable data exists to demonstrate this. To deny either is stupid. To posit that humanity can affect a naturally occurring phenomonon displays monumental arrogance.

If a solution must be espoused, then why not simply adapt to the particular, thereby insuring or vastly increasing the chances of surviving either.

"reined in," not "reigned in."

One refers to stopping or slowing down a horse; the other means to be a monarch in a certain place or time.

15 yard penalty, loss of down.

It's smooth in warmer temps.

Posted by: ErikW at November 25, 2011 07:52 PM (ecl/7)

I haven't worked on anything that modern, but in the olden days, I would have tried to swap out the coil as possibly being temperature sensitive.  If it runs at higher temps, but won't fire on ether in the cold, it sounds like a coil problem.

Pull a spark plug wire (carefully) and put a spark plug in the end.  Ground the outside of the plug and crank the engine.  If the ignition system is good, you should see a visible spark.  YMMV.

200 ErikW, if it won't even pop on ether, it's almost certainly ignition, thus the advice about the ignition module sounds good.  Take a look at all the stuff under the distributor cap, too.  Spent 3 winters in NoDak back in the day and the chryslers always seemed to start ok, as opposed to the imports.

Posted by: Mammon at November 25, 2011 04:25 PM (w9vb/)

207 Colder temperatures require more current to crank the engine, plus the engine doesn't rotate as fast. That robs current from the ignition system, making for weaker spark. You may need a starter rebuild, a new battery or who the hell knows what. Is the engine carburated or fuel injected?

It's fuel injected. It's been cold the past few days (30-40) and it takes three or four cranks for it to fire. And the whole damn thing has been rebuilt. Or so I thought.

From my experience fuel injected engines are way easier starting in cold weather than carbureted engines. Since it is injected and a 1990, I'm assuming it is throttle body fuel injection and not port injection. Probably some computer involved which makes things beyond my limited knowledge. Do you pump the accelerator while trying to start it? If you do that is a no no. If you were spraying ether in it, where were you spraying it? I doubt that the ether got all the way to the intake.

215 Not having seen the set up on a 1990 318, I really can't comment. I didn't know you could spray directly into the intake manifold. I doubt that 1 degree in temperature could determine fire or no fire. I have been wrong before. This wouldn't be the first time. You might have a computer problem. Hope you get it fixed without spending a bunch of money.

222 You may want to check the fuel filter or change it. I don't know the mileage of your pickup. They can slow the flow of fuel when they get dirty and it would restrict more in colder temperatures. Probably not your problem, but a cheap replacement.

231 "There's an old saying in Tennessee - I know it's in Texas, probably in Tennessee - that says, Fool me once, shame on .... shame on you. Fool me ... say, you can't get fooled again." It wasn't nearly so hard work last time, because this hunting ground was all virgin territory. I mean, it wasn't exactly easy, because every one of those thousands of emails had to be gone through, it was like looking for a noodle in a pancake stack from here to the Moon. But what helped, a lot, was that word "trick"; you could buld a narrative around a word like that - in fact, that's what happened. But regardless, this is going to be an entirely different challenge. Even though we still have the same huge mother lode of e-mails and some greater experience and feel and knowledge for how to do this thing, there's some fall-out from Climategate I, and what was there in the first place was skinny stuff, but what's left over for this second haul, man oh man, that's some slim pickin's. Ah, forget that: this is about going to meet one's maker wrapped in a big extra-heavy duty shroud of hubris. So, get on with it. Hit it, Henry: Once more into the breach, dear morons, once more; Or close the wall up with our denier dead. In peace there's nothing so becomes a man As modest stillness and humility; But when the blast of war blows in our ears, Then imitate the action of Mount Nittany's Lion brood. Stiffen the sinews, stir up your blood, Disguise fair nature with rage; Then lend the eye a terrible aspect - Let it pry through the portage of the head Like the brass cannon; Let the moronic brow overwhelm that eye, As fearfully as does a galled rock Overhang and jutty you confounded fishing base, Swilled with the wild, wasted ocean. Now set your stubby teeth and stretch your nostril wide as for an OWS smell, Hold hard your breath, and bend over and get that spirit of your up to his full height.

It's worth remembering that the first Homo sapiens to come to America walked here, via the Bering Isthmus. So the climate has changed, drastically, during our time on earth. But unless you believe in magic, it's unlikely that we brought that about.

234 EricW If your engine does not have a distributor, andthen it has a crank trigger. Crank triggers need to see the signals at a certain rpm. If you starter does not turn the engine over fast enough it will not start. Had a car with a bad bearing in the alternator that froze up and the drag on the belts would not let it start.

I know I'm way late to the party, but I had a Ranger with similar symptoms. I don't know if Ford uses the same system as yours, but you might look to see if there's something called a thermactor valve or similar. It was a little beast Ford put in line on its early fuel injected engines to take the place of a choke. If it acted up in cold weather, it was a bear to start and keep running. You had to constantly keep your foot lightly on the gas until the engine warmed up - a real trick if you have a manual transmission and need to go NOW.
