Whew. Glad thatÂ’s over with (at least here in Taxachusetts). On the way in to work, I heard at least 15 dead. Hope it wasnÂ’t anyone in the Moron Nation.
In light of all the sad and bad and creepy news, hereÂ’s a story about a classic Hollywood practical joke:
If you ever watched the movie Sunset Boulevard, you’ll recall that, when Norma Desmond goes to Paramount to meet with Cecil B. DeMille, the great director is in the middle of shooting the movie Samson and Delilah. And you might have heard, if you listened closely, DeMille give someone named “Henry Wilcoxon” an order to hold up a piece of drapery with his sword.
Henry Wilcoxon? Who he? Well, “Biff” Wilcoxon was one of DeMille’s favorite leading men, also acting as an associate producer to DeMille later in life. If you’ve watched enough DeMille movies, you’ve seen him – the vicar in Mrs. Miniver, Marc Antony in Cleopatra, Richard the Lion-Heart in The Crusades, the captain of Pharaoh’s guards in The Ten Commandments. and Bishop “Oh, rat farts!” Pickering in Caddyshack.
So here’s the joke – during a publicity tour for Samson, Wilcoxon became extremely exhausted; suffering from pneumonia, in fact, and couldn’t wait to end the tour. Finally, Richard Condon, the publicist, met Wilcoxon in his hotel suite and told him, “This is the last appointment. It’s with a priest from the Legion of Decency and someone from the Protestant Women’s Council. And that’s it.”
“Thank God,” Wilcoxon said. “Let’s get it over with.”
Condon called in the priest, who was very much a tough Karl Malden type, and the woman, a pretty but prim spinster in a flowered hat and dress. After a few polite preliminaries, the priest got down to business. “Mr. Wilcoxon, we like the picture very much. But there’s one thing you’ll have to change.”
Wilcoxon stiffened. “Change?”
“Yes,” the priest went on. “That scene where Samson and Delilah are walking hand in hand through the fields – you remember that one? You’ll have to superimpose a picture of Jesus over it.”
“Are you out of your mind?” Wilcoxon exploded. “That scene takes place centuries before Christ was born! And besides, the movie is finished. We’re going to release it. What you’re asking me to do is impossible!”
Sensing some difficulty ahead, the woman from the Protestant Council excused herself at this point and stepped out of the room.
“You’re going to do it,” the priest snarled, “or the Legion is going to condemn the movie. Now, are you going to call Mr. DeMille, or am I?”
The two men sat there, the priest smug and Wilcoxon wondering what he was going to do. It was very hot in the suite, and both men were sweating. The priest reached into his breast pocket for his handkerchief. As he pulled it out, two condoms fell onto the carpet. WilcoxonÂ’s face paled, but the priest only shrugged as he wiped his brow.
“Can’t be too careful,” he said as he picked up the condoms. “There’s a lot of VD in my parish.”
At this point, the woman came back into the suite. Except for her hat and steel-rimmed glasses, she was completely naked.
“OK,” she said. “Who wants it first?”
For a moment, Wilcoxon sat there, too shocked to speak. Then he started to laugh. And so did everyone else.
After the laughter died down, Condon explained that the “priest” was a local actor and the Woman’s Council representative a hooker. He’d hired them, written the scene and coached them. The joke, Condon explained, was a way of cheering up Wilcoxon and thanking him, on behalf of Paramount, for all the work he’d done on behalf of the movie.
And, with a hooker in the room, did anything else happen? Well, my source avoids its eye at this point, and so should we.
Hope you all have a wonderful day. Stay safe, friends in a box.

Had the opposite here in SW Virginia...finally got a good bit of wind yesterday afternoon and overnight (lots of gusts of about 50 mph and a bit over), but no precipitation at all, not enough to notice anyway (despite Weather.com's doppler radar insisting that it's been snowing here steadily for the last 12 hours or so).
Hope everyone who was in (or still is in) the thick of it came through okay.

It looks like supercharged and supersized SuperStorm Sandy (do you want fries with that?) came ashore a few dozen miles north of our Sussex County, Delaware beach abode.
Photos taken outside the development yesterday morning showed flooding, but if past experience holds, our property would have had water on it, but nothing substantial near the house. In any event, we knew the risks and we intend to cover the costs of any damage ourselves.

61 Not to worry. Chris Christie will get the credit for the rescue work being done in his state. It is a stark contrast from what he is doing there compared to how democrats act - like the mayor of Atlantic City. Obama won't be able be able to do much about taking credit for NJ except declare it a state of emergency, which he already did. Watch him try to get some photo ops with Gov Cuomo. Everyone will remember how Pataki and Guiliani and Bush handled NYC after 9/11. Cuomo, Bloomberg and Obama are all tiny little opportunists in comparison.
Leadership becomes obvious. Obama already looks as if he's trying to 'spin' the storm to help his campaign.

178 @170: It's annoying as hell. Just because you didn't get affected doesn't mean the storm was nothing. Yes, it could have been much worse (I lived in FL for 18 years, I do know how this stuff works). That doesn't diminish that it's a large serving of shit for many of us, or that Ace and Gabe are apparently MIA.
Posted by: Ian S. at October 30, 2012 09:10 AM (jaLAQ)
His point, and mine, isn't that the storm was nothing. Of course it affected people and caused damage. It's a fucking hurricane. The point is that when you look at it in context of hurricanes, then it's nothing. And the "OMG!!!11!! Frankenstorm!!! NYC will be gone forever! We are all gonnnnnaaaa ddddiiiiieeeee!!!" reaction of the media is absurd and as DangerGirl said, it's gonna get people killed.
PS - Ace is MIA??? He posted all the way up until the ONT. Which is pretty standard. And he'll show up today around 2.

What?!? What fucking hospital doesn't have a back up generator? So people on ventilators just die if a transformer blows?
Hell, the big hospital here in town has it's own power station. It actually makes so much of its own power, it sells some back to the local power company.

AinÂ’t it ironic. If the NE people fled to Loozyana, theyÂ’d be safe. (This time.) Remember how so many of the media pundits up in NYC and environs opined in 2005 that it was stupid to live on the Gulf Coast, with the constant threat of hurricanes? Well, they were right, of course; it is stupid. But their choice of dwelling place apparently isnÂ’t any smarter.
That said, I donÂ’t wish horrible destruction, dismemberment, or death on anyone. Stay safe, folk.

And where is Sean Penn? Hey, this isn't an official disaster without him.
Seriously though, here in NW PA we had steady rain, some downpours and the wind gusted off and on during the night. Went down to the lake front this AM and the waves were pretty typical for any storm this time of year. No power outages but some flooding of creeks. And the hype was pretty efficient. I saw people leaving the stores yesterday with lots of bottled water and some stores sold out of flashlights. Still, I would rather see that then those people having to be rescued because they refused to evacuate as some did in Queens.

NYU. They had one, but it didn't work, and nobody knew it wouldn't work (I don't know much about generators but I do know every disaster/prep thread here has reminders to test your generator periodically...).
Nurses had to manually respirate patients while waiting for ambulances to get them transferred.

There is a huge difference between "I am satisfied with how the federal government has handled this situation" and "President Obama has been just outstanding, just outstanding"
And, "I couldn't care less" about Romney's visit, could have been replaced with, "Once the immediate aftermath has been dealt with, and I have had time to properly assess the situation, I cannot wait to meet with (optional: my good friend) Governor Romney, so that he knows what kind of relief efforts are necessary in the upcoming weeks and months."

never lost power here (underground lines) in northern VA, but about 12K in the rural and older parts of the county did. Some roads closed due to flooding and downed trees. We didn't lose any trees, but some street trees one block over split and down.
Been raining since night before last, and last night the gusts were a bit hairy at times, but all well overall.

Exactly how a messageless campaign could repeat the same turnout, much less increase turnout even more, is beyond reason.

Certainly, but it changes culpability, or level thereof.
There are basically 4 possible scenarios here, and in only 2 of them does the hospital bear any responsibility for that failure.
1) No Generator (obviously the hospital would be responsible here)
2) Generator fails due to mechanical/maintenance issues (hospital responsible because that kind of thing should have been checked, found, and fixed in the week leading up to landfall)
3) Generator fails due to damage sustained in the storm (hospital not responsible- it's not like they can control the weather)
4) Generator works (no "responsibility" or "fault" to speak of at all).
Now, we know it wasn't #4, and I'm pretty sure it wasn't #1, but that still leaves a 50/50 chance that "sue like the wind" is not exactly called for.

All I am saying is I am sure he is/was prepared for all the questions. Surely he could have had better balanced answers. Kissing Obama's rear when he knows what Obama is.....a failed president helps no one, not Romney, not the country, not the people of his state.
Let's face it....Obama is doing HIS JOB. No more, no less. How would he have reacted if Sandy hit Northern Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina? Well, I guess we'll never know. And while I credit President Obama for doing what he is supposed to do (his job), it would be naive to believe that there isn't a small part of that administration calculating each move.
For the past month, I have asked who is running the country, as Obama has not been in DC dealing with the Benghazi crisis, handling the economy. He has not been doing his job for weeks now. It seems rather convenient that all of the sudden, now is the time for him to hunker down and do the job he was elected for in the first place.
