A Navy spokesman confirmed Tuesday the route of the USS Providence (SSN 719) into the Mediterranean Sea, but said he could not discuss the details or assets being directed toward Libya, especially submarines.

The Los Angeles-class submarine traveled with the USS Enterprise carrier strike group. A destroyer, the USS Mason, also crossed the canal with the Providence, the spokesman said.

While I agree in principal, there is a substantial difference.  There was an active rebellion in Libya that was largely successful, and we wasted a precious opportunity by not ensuring their success early on with a little material and air support.  The clean-up, the reorganization, the headaches of revolution would have been theirs alone.  As close to ideal as you could get in this world.

We missed such an opportunity in Iran as well, but it was not a sure thing by any means.  But we should have given at least a little moral support to the Green movement.

North Korea is a basket case.  There is no viable revolutionary forces there.  The fighting would be entirely on our shoulders.  Again, NK is a basket case.  When the Nork regime falls, weither by for or by sheer exhaustion, it will be a human disaster that will inevitably fall on the west to fix.  It's gonna happen sooner or later, but I'd rather it fall with less bloodshed than more.  As good as it feels to say kick his f*****g ass, it's never so simply as breaking his shit and walking away.  Libya could have been a rare chance to do just that for once.

Since we've been so hated the world over for doing the right thing militarily over the years ("cowboy diplomacy" as a recent example) and given that for a long time, we've entered into conflicts not with the will to win and crush our enemies but with one arm tied behind our backs instead (ROE, I'm looking at you), I'm kind of glad we're letting someone else step up to the plate for once.

This administration is inept, indecisive, capricious and clueless. Now, the rest of the world has a little taste of what it's like without a superpower on the side of good. They've bitched and moaned about us for years while happily taking our foreign aid and voting against our interests. OK, since we're so bad, you go ahead and take care of the next major crisis for a change.

I'm all for a bit of isolationism. I think it'd be good for everyone else to see just how much we do hold the world together. I'm all for us concentrating on building up our local defense, especially a missile shield, and working on getting our economy back on track by withdrawing from this global economy thingy (btw, how's that working out? What sense does it make for an earthquake on the other side of the world to idle car plants here and for a civil war half a world away to send our gas prices through the roof when it doesn't have to happen?)

The Mason (DDG-87) is a Burke class. What makes this funny is that the original USS Mason (DE-529) was built in 1944 and was an evarts class. It was decommissioned in 1945 and sold for scraping in 1947. It was a mostly African American enlisted compliment ship.

What I meant was that we should concentrate on providing real diversity in the job market for us. We could be making just about everything we need right here. Ironically, the environuts have kept us from using a lot of our natural resources for quite a while, so we still have a lot to work with within our borders.

I didn't mean to suggest that we withdraw from trade, just that we not make that the whole basis of what's left of our manufacturing sector. There's actually two pieces of any heat-cycle power plant: One, the hot piece, and two, the colder piece. We often just don't need to worry excessively about it: in a car, you literally just dump the hot crap into the exhaust system.

At a nuke plant, if you don't have the giant cooling towers and all of the paraphernalia outside of the reactor core working at providing cooling, then you only get half-way around the loop. That is: you boil all of your water and generate some power... but you're left with steam andor water that's too damn hot to "just" send around the loop again.

The most noticeable pieces of American plants - the 500-foot high concrete curvy towers - are there soley for the purpose of providing cooling and thus 'finishing the loop'. The cooling parts aren't as fancy or as dangerous as the actual hot part - but they are just as crucial as far as actually generating power is concerned.

To all of you wondering why we are attacking Libya and not Iran or North korea based on the same logic we used to attack Libya, I will add one comment for you to do with as you please:

The major difference is that Libya had a peasant revolt that was looking like it might succeed.  They asked us for help, saying plainly that if we gave them air cover, they would clean the rest up themselves and we'd have a free Libya on our hands. The same is not true in either NORK or Iran - we'd have to do it all ourselves. 

Say what you will about having missed that opportunity in Libya - I will agree that we dallied far too long and may have done just that. 

However, can any of you see a situation where this sends a clear message to Iranian and North korean peasants that if they, too, revolt, that NATO may very well be there to help them, as we were in Libya? 

I think that contrary to what is being said on here, that this is a shrewd move on the part of NATO, and if it can compell Iranian malcontents to just straight up revolt, then it is money well spent.  I'm just sorry it took France to think of it, and that Obama had to be asked and goaded into responding. 

That being said, this could backfire, but in what way?  Iran won't give up its nuke program now because Kadaffy did and look what that got him?  Doesn't that sort of depend on there being a chance, ever, of Iran giving up it's nuke program?  Did any of you think that was ever going to happen, anyway?
