— Ace By law, virtually nothing gets shut down -- only one in four federal workers are furloughed. The courts, the military, Social Security, the Post Office -- all essential services keep running. (Which makes one wonder -- what are the other services, and why do we have them?)
Honestly, the GOP has to be willing to risk this big nothing. If nothing else, it saves money during the non-shutdown shutdown.
Thanks to momma.
We need to think like Honey Badger.

Obama's entertainment budget is probably considered essential.
I mean, have you ever tried to celebrate Black History Month without one of the Jonas brothers?
Would be fun it the GOP had a spine and could cut some funding of Obama's travel or something.

So shutting down federal gubamint--BAD
Democrats shutting down state gubamint--GOOD
Animal Farm all over again. I just watched that video of the meltdown in the Wisconsin Capitol building with the Dems yelling "Shame, Shame, Shame!", and was struck by the large number of Democrat legislators wearing the orange union t-shirts. Republicans need to use that clip in their next elections. Democrats represent the Unions in opposition to the citizens who vote for them. It's right there in that video with the Dems wearing the "team color" of the opponent they are rooting for.

When I worked as an assistant telephone operator at my state college, my union-member co-workers were classified as essential.
The two people who sit in the basement, answer the phone, and transfer calls to other departments were essential.
I know it was state vs federal, and it's not an exact logical conclusion, but in essence this means that at least 25% of the federal workforce is less essential than those two.

Not essential: the EPA, Depts. of Energy and Education, both houses of the Congress, the Presidency (goes without saying), and several dozen Czars. for starters. By the way: Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, anyone involved in our various welfare and redistribution programs? Non-essential. TSA? Non-essential, given how little good they're doing. Border Patrol, INS? If we're not going to let them do their job, non-essential.
I could balance the whole damb* budget this way in less than a week.

I put up a link at the side bar, sometime Hot Air kills me.
Ed Morrisey thinks Governor Walker should compromise on the CBA issue in return for allowing school vouchers.
1. That's retarded
2. That's really retarded
3. Why an either or? Why not both?
4. If they Unions won't agree to a CBA restriction then why would they support vouchers.
5. The CBA isn't a union busting issue as its being painted. The Teachers get to keep their wage CBA agreements, just not benefits. This is to save money. When you make a deal over what your wages will be over the next ten years, the person making the budget has firm numbers to use in his projections. Wages = set costs. When you promise benefits for the next ten years, you have no idea what the actual cost in year two will be let alone year 10. How many of you can tell me what your health insurance premium will be in 6 months, let alone 10 years. This is why the CBA for benefits needs to be destroyed. Benefits= aren't set or fixed costs.
6. Captain Ed is creeping into David Brooks/David Frum i-have-a-better-idea territory, when in reality it isn't a better idea or creative solution.

A Coptic Christian priest has been killed in southern Egypt, triggering street demonstrations by several thousand Christians.
The priest was found dead in his home. A fellow clergyman, Danoub Thabet, says his body had several stab wounds. He says neighbours reported seeing several masked men leaving the apartment and shouting “Allahu akbar,” or “God is great,” suggesting the killing was motivated by the divide between Egypt’s Muslims and its minority Coptic community.
About 3,000 protesters scuffled with Muslim shop owners Tuesday night and smashed the windows of a police car in the city, Assiut.

Obamas name openly gay man as social secretary
The White House on Friday named Jeremy Bernard to serve as social secretary to President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle Obama, the first male and first openly gay person to hold the position.
The high profile job, traditionally filled by a woman, will put Bernard in ultimate charge of dispensing sumptuous White House hospitality at events from state dinners to holiday parties, concerts and tours of the presidential mansion.
"Jeremy shares our vision for the White House as the People's House, one that celebrates our history and culture in dynamic and inclusive ways," Obama said in a statement.

Indiana Lawmakers Using Interstate Substitutions
In hockey, players are usually substituted on the fly, without a stop in play, and that's how the Indiana House Democrats are swapping-out their members holed-up at the Comfort Suites in Urbana, Illinois in an effort to keep the state legislature from voting on a "right to work" bill that labor unions are protesting.
State Representatives Vanessa Summers (D-Indianapolis) and Terri Austin (D-Anderson) arrived at the hotel early Thursday afternoon. This freed up Rep. Scott Pelath (D-Michigan City) and Rep. Cherrish Pryor (D-Indianapolis) to go home.
Austin's very first order of business after checking in, was lunch."I'm sorry, but I have to go eat something," Austin said as she drove off.
It's not clear which Indiana Democrats got to head back to the Hoosier State, but they have an important job when they get home. The Democratic caucus needs to keep at least two members ready to head to the State House floor in order to make a motion for a "quorum call" and another to second the motion.
Without that parliamentary maneuver, in theory, House Republicans could declare a they have the 67 members on hand necessary to call the chamber to order and begin passing legislation. The GOP outnumbers Democrats in the House, 60-40. Since the walk-out, there have only been three House Democrats available, leaving the chamber four short of enough to open a session.
Mitch had a big swoon over the prospect of sending state troopers across the border to round up the rabbiting Dems. But you'd think at least he'd round up the couple that were --- you know -- steps away from the statehouse floor, and stop the sex and socks runs.
But, that would require he be a vertebrate, so no....

--Is it better to float CRs or just have a shutdown?
It's better to float CRs with strong attachments, such as the repeal of ObamaCare, deep cuts to other services, etc. The shutdown is a threat with the CRs as well as anything else. The dems just want to shut the government down, no matter what. The GOP are too cowardly and stupid to play their own hand and try to save this nation.
If Boehner lets Reid take the fall for a shutdown, he better have a contingency plan. Obama isn't going to take just anything, though Reid has already blinked. So, what are our terms?

202 This doesn't seem like a hard choice. If they don't shut down the government they will definitely get primaried. If they do shut the government down then they might loose some of the independent voters who helped put them in.
Primary all of them, or just the top 3? Remember, Boehner, Cantor, and McCarthy are the ones primarily playing cards here.

Accepting the characterization as a "shut down" accepts the premise. "Non-essential services suspension" or "wind down" is more like it.
"Well, Andrea, if we don't have the money, why are we blowing what money we have on non-essential services? All of these Americans who are out of work due to the utter failure of the President's stimulus fantasy first spend money on what they need and not on what they don't need. Why do you think the federal government should be any different. Will the country be in peril if there is a delay in the GBLT curriculum at the Department of Education? I mean, are you serious? A number of GOP members have mentioned the strategy you give above, and it could very well be used. It's hard to tell because it's a bit unclear what Boehner has in-mind. I do know they are stating that, if there is a shutdown, the Dems are responsible.
As for Boehner, getting rid to blink doesn't exactly make him stupid. If you take every member from our side and ask who's a better strategist, you could find a number fo them. Though Boehner has been good about listening to the freshmen and sticking to his promise of open debate, and I don't think some of them would do that.
Overall, it's premature to call the battle over when we haven't seen the last hand played. They've been playing this game of chicken for some weeks now and I'm going to see what happens before I start screaming about it. If the end result is that Boehner doesn't stick to his word, then I'll agree with you completely.

I know one Republican who isn't afraid and wouldn't collapse like these dipshit GOPers in Washington ... but then people keep asking what is different about Palin ...
Meanwhile, Mitch The Bitch is declaring it a clear loss for the GOP and he recommends that they all just give up their seats and let dems take over. Dems know how to play the game. Don't like a bill? Run away and refuse a quorum. That's a legitimate part of the game, to Mitch The Bitch.

I think this is different than your lockout example below because of public perception. Here, the public (and hell even I) believe that the Republicans are wanting based off of ideology to shut the government down.
The Company rep. in your example has deniability. Yeah, the company might be ready to force its hand, and indeed want to lock the workers out, but the company will suffer too and is therefore reluctant.
Here, it would be hard to find too many commenters who wouldn't be thrilled to shut the government down for years at a time if possible.
From a PR standpoint, the GOP must be the reluctant warrior. Its already an uphill climb due to our philosophy in the public (read independents) eyes, so to "win" a shutdown the GOP must make it appear if they really didn't want to shut the government down all along, and it was the Dems who were philosophically unreasonable.

WASHINGTON -- The Obama administration is offering more than $1.3 billion to settle complaints from female and Hispanic farmers who say they faced discrimination from the Agriculture Department.
The Agriculture and Justice departments announced Friday that farmers who could prove discrimination could receive up to $50,000. The proposal comes after the government settled with American Indians over similar discrimination issues last fall and Congress provided money for the second round of a black farmers settlement.
The government first announced its intent to settle the complaints in
May. The more detailed offer announced Friday does not cap the amount of
money that can be awarded and waives some application fees.

Well a purveyor of fine freeze dried food knows my feelings on teh subject. Apparently I'm not the only one that feels this way...
Mountain House
"As you know we have removed #10 cans from our website temporarily. The reason for this is sales of #10 cans have continued to increase OFD is allocating as much production capacity as possible to this market segment, but we must maintain capacity for our other market segments as well.. . .
We want to clarify inaccurate information that is being said on the internet, news and radio. This situation is not due to sales to the government domestically or internationally. We do sell products to this market, but we also sell other market segments, including Ingredient and Private Brand markets. The reason for this decision is solely due to an unexpected sales spike in #10 cans sales."
Nitro Pak
"All Mountain House & Nitro-Pak food storage #10 cans are in EXTREMELY HIGH DEMAND due to national & world current economic uncertainty and inflation fears. With this increase in demand, our food order processing times have greatly increased also. As Mountain HouseÂ’s leading distributor, we are receiving HUGE shipments WEEKLY to fill our customer orders but demand exceeds the available supply. 99% of MH dealers have been been cut off & receive no food period. Supplies are VERY SCARCE. Like Disneyland, the line is long but still moving. Please be patient."
Did I mention loin girding?

291 The Senate will strip that stuff out. It's symbolic.
The 112th Congress is mostly symbolic. Look, the choice for me is this-- do we try actually getting any spending cuts, write our own budget, and everything else OR do we just shut it all down and go home? To me, it's a choice between those two and there are pros and cons for both. What I've heard from a number of freshmen and some others is that they prefer trying to get real cuts instead of a shutdown, though I think they're being naive about trying to get the entire sum from Reid. This whole thing is just ridiculous. Shame on the anti-American Dems for caring more about politics than the country.

These may be the overflow that couldn't fit onto the boat, as the ferry chartered by the US wasn't as big as the one chartered by Greece.

Don't under estimate the power of the Left to use a shut down to demonize Republicans. They'll find a way.
During the shut down of the 1990's I got a call from a former co-worker who wanted to let me know that a guy I knew from work killed himself. Sad story. But she blamed it on the government shut down. He was a veteran, you see, and couldn't get help from the VA. So even though he'd been having problems traced back to Vietnam, those 3 weeks killed him.

Since the Koch brothers bought out G-P mills which become unproductive see their labor forces reduced and new, more efficient plants built. There's basically three unions left, United Paper Workers, Inland Dock Workeers and the ASW. Koch is slowly ending the unions chokehold on G-P.

If the "shutdown" that everyone is making such a big deal about has no appreciable impact on people's day-to-day lives, then anything that WAS affected by it could probably be safely cut.
Even then, there's going to be a lot of unnecessary shit that is still classified as "essential" for whatever reason that could STILL end up being cut down the road.
