NBC Poll: Cain In First Place
— Ace

Cain 27%, Romney 23%, Perry 16%.

After those three, itÂ’s Texas Rep. Ron Paul at 11 percent, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich at 8 percent, Bachmann at 5 percent and former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman at 3 percent.

In the previous survey, conducted in late August, Perry led the field at 38 percent, Romney stood at 23 percent, while Cain was at only 5 percent.

A PPP poll has similar findings, except in that poll, Gingrich has slipped just barely ahead of Perry.

If we nominate Romney, it'll be a hard slog to the White House.  Because there is little difference between Romney and Obama.  Romneycare?  Corn subsidies?  Global warming?  A woman's right to choose?  Civil unions?

The only difference I see in policy is a few percentage points on the income tax rate.  That, and Obama's more of a warmonger.

In follow-up interviews with respondents supporting Cain, they argue that heÂ’s not a politician, and that he seems real.

“Cain presents himself as a real person. He speaks from the heart. He is plainspoken and down to Earth,” added a 56-year-old female from Texas.

42 Remember: this is actual Republican primary voters. Lots of room for interpretation. My take: Perry is far from finished, regardless of the Revolution having happened 200 years later than what Aggie textbooks apparently say. Romney is at peak of all who prefer him, and he can go no further without the field thinning out. But even then: the vote going to Cain is RIGHT of BOTH Perry & Romney; add in the vote going to Bachmann, split the votes going to RoPaul, give the votes going to Huntsman & Gingrich to Romney, & that's ... Perry 53.5, Romney 39.5, the rest unaccounted for & who gives a shit. Hope.

There was another poll where they had a relatively large MOE and on top of that IIRC some 20% told the pollsters that they were still *undecided* but do you think the reporters made sure their audience was aware of that? Hell to the NO!

If I could take it upon myself to just select a President among all who are running, it would be Newt.

Problem is that me and pretty much everybody else who've followed him since the Dem/Media grand hit job that began on him in 1995 don't see how the image he's been stuck with for sixteen years can be overcome.  Not to mention there is a bit of personal baggage he's earned along the way.

Is it possible?  I mean by what scenario could he become acceptable to enough people to win?  I know one thing.  The annihilation he would exact upon BHO in a debate would be beyond sublime.

Who doesn't like pizza?  All of these supposed negatives for Cain only serve to endear him to small subsets of voters.  Like the anti-jihai crowd knows where Cain is on the muzzies, and even though he "apologized" everyone knows there's no Rashid Khalidi tape of Cain out there.

Same with the whole "pizza price" thing.  Regular people can understand that idea, and taxing everything at 9% is a pretty fair shake.  Making fun of an understandable plan because of its understandability is pompous and denigrating.

Not to mention, everyone likes the magical old black guy.  We've been conditioned for decades to trust him.  Obama will always look like a young little squirt, and we can finally have the 1 and a half black guy election to put the nail in the "racism" coffin once and for all.

120 I prefer Perry right now as the better but not perfect candidate.

Next I would go for Cain and hope he doesn't do any more interviews with Chris Wallace. He doesn't have much of a dick left.

After that it comes down to the also ran idiots and Romney/Huntsman. Huntsman will drop out after NH, but he will probably be the only one as long as the MFM is giving free air time on "debates".

But then we have to look at the results of the Primary

Right now I will go stand in the rain (just like last time) to vote against Obama, definitely for anybody but Huntsman and Romney. I will even vote for that idiot Ron Paul!

Those two squishes I look at as probably just as bad as Obama, not to mention likely to result in the Republican Party going the way of the Whigs.

Right now, I get the feeling he is at 'Eh...dunno'  A good indicator if this is a real shift is he starts to raise funds on the level of Perry and Romney.  At that point it'll be a 'Maaaaybee'.  It's still too early and the field too crowded.  Those who are below 5% need to drop out to really see clearly.

The debates will not be the last word on this.

126 Now, we've done some digging and it turns out that several thousand years ago someone named "Cain" committed a disturbing murder of his own brother.

Sources cannot confirm that GOP candidate for President, Herman Cain, is in any way tied to this matter, but we've reached out to the candidate for a response, but no answer was forthcoming. This seems rather suspicious and raises even more questions.

We'll stay on this story and continue to update as we uncover more of the truth.

(IF "DEMOCRAT" OR "REPUBLICAN," ASK Would you call yourself a strong (Democrat/Republican) or not a very strong (Democrat/Republican)? (IF "NOT SURE," CODE AS "NOT VERY STRONG DEMOCRAT/REPUBLICAN.") (IF "INDEPENDENT," ASK Do you think of yourself as closer to the Republican Party, closer to the Democratic Party, or do you think of yourself as strictly independent? (IF "NOT SURE," CODE AS "STRICTLY INDEPENDENT.") Strong Democrat .........................16% Not very strong Democrat ..............9% Independent/lean Democrat ..........15% Strictly Independent......................19% Independent/lean Republican........16% Not very strong Republican ........... .8% Strong Republican......................... 12% Other (VOL)................................... 4% Not sure.........................................1% **** So only 12% of the respondents identified themselves as "strong Republicans"- but the media is going to scream all over the place about the importance of this poll.

It's true, but the Insider take is the usual stretch, second cousin to Our Depressed Preznit stories. Daley is staying on through next year, which is hardly unprecedented or unusual for WH cos types; remember Rahm left to take over as capo di capi tutti in Chicago, & Bush went thru two for sure, maybe three. My guess, Daley's doing something like the same: has his eye on some plumb that working a couple of years for the SCoaMF actually helps to get: senate, governor, seat on the Fed - of those, given the Daley family resume, I'd guess Illinois governor.

194 159 53 Daley is staying on through next year, which is hardly unprecedented or unusual for WH cos types; remember Rahm left to take over as capo di capi tutti in Chicago, & Bush went thru two for sure, maybe three. My guess, Daley's doing something like the same: has his eye on some plumb that working a couple of years for the SCoaMF actually helps to get: senate, governor, seat on the Fed - of those, given the Daley family resume, I'd guess Illinois governor.

It's true that they have a high burnout and turnover rate but they usually wait to publicly discuss such matters unless there is a bitter feud occurring or a loss of confidence. In Daley's case, he is being blamed for a number of Obama's recent mistakes, though that was inevitable.

208 Reggie1971: "The annihilation he would exact upon BHO in a debate would be beyond sublime."

While true would there be any debates? Two? One? None? I'm guessing one at most. Whatever the outcome - and Gingrich would would not only clean Obama's clock, he'd reset it to the Reagan administration - the debate would be considered an aberration. The MFM would see to that even if they weight it to be a "tie."

Nonetheless, I'm actually starting to lean to Newt, too. If meritocracy means anything, and we're basing our analysis on the debates, Newt is in another stratosphere compared to everyone else. He's just in so much command and the consummate professional both with facts and tone as to be dominant.

Could he win? Sure he could. Do I trust him? That's the eternal question. But he is the most Presidential at this point. Frankly, an empty chair could win in '12. I still believe that; so I'm not all that concerned about who gets to beat Obama if my only goal is to remove Obama. The backstop needs to be Congress, so that's really where I'm most concerned and optimistic from a Tea Party POV. Lock up Congress and a rogue president from either party can be checked... if it's serious.

So, for me, it's a serious, Tea Party led Congress which is key in 2012. Block Obama (should a miracle reelection happen) or the RINO (should the "next in line" happen).

Does Newt, sitting on a couch with Blinky, disqualify him as a "real" conservative?

Does Sarah Palin, running as McCain's VP choice, disqualify her as a "real" conservative?

Is Romney disqualified, because he gave the voters in Mass. something they wanted, and it doesn't fit your model of "real"?

Is Perry disqualified, because he thinks kids should be educated?

Is Reagan disqualified, because he gave amnesty to illegal aliens?

I think, we're missing something here.

It may be, that the "real" conservative is a figment of your imagination.. A "real" conservative might even scare the hell out of you.. It wouldn't be human.

266 A lot of you goombas are putting far too much credence in these debates being run by the MFM. This shit started with the first one to ever be held Kennedy v Nixon.

The people who listened to it on the radio said Nixon won the debate. The people who watched it on TV all said Kennedy won.

So why the difference? They shot Nixon from bad camera angles, they applied bad makeup, and they made him look like a bum with 5 o:clock shadow.

They have become a LOT more sophisticated now. Look at the hoard of idiots screaming because Perry didn't talk a lot last night.  Have you reviewed the GD rules of the debates? You can't talk unless called upon! When they don't call on you you don't talk.

I haven't heard ONE of these dickweed MFM goons mention the rules.

And beginning with the first debate the questions haven't really been anything but gotcha shit designed to embarrass everybody but Romney.

272 /Glenn Beck-style Tin Foil hat on:

I think we're looking at Romney/Cain as the GOP ticket.

The Powers That Be (both Democrat and Republican) know that they can't afford 4 more years of the SCOAMF, but they also know that the usual crazed wacko KosKids-type suspects will fire up the race war in order to keep him in office.  They only way to dampen down that at all is to put another person-of-melanin-enhancement up on the opposing ticket.

BUT--TPTB have already pretty much put the fix in for Romney at the top of the ticket.

I think they're maneuvering Cain into a solid #2 position to draw the Tea Party types in, and also to increase the skin melanin content of the GOP ticket.

Put a fork in it, it's done.

“It appeared to me that Herman Cain and Mitt Romney were the strongest performers. You could tell also, just by the way the questions were pitched, who was being picked on the most. And Mitt Romney and Herman Cain appear to be the frontrunners. Polling data seems to be backing that up.

[Cain]Â’s very talented. HeÂ’s a very endearing person; you meet him and he has a very magnetic personality. But, you know, theyÂ’re all talented. Mitt Romney has a very presidential swagger as well. WeÂ’ll see what happens. . . . I could support any one of these people, and will gladly do so.”

Mormons can still have more than one wife from temple marriages. As an example: A guy gets married in the temple which is recorded both as a civil marriage and a temple marriage. He gets a civil divorce but not a temple divorce. He then gets remarried again in the temple. Now is has one wife in a civil marriage, but he has two wives in a temple marriage. You can get a temple divorce, but they discourage it and make people jump through hoops.

311 One thing that we should take from Obama and understand is that he was all about the marketing. "999 plan" sucks balls in application but it is good marketing. Just like "5 Dollar foot long" or "Hope and Change". Cain in earlier interviews has said it is a transitional plan for the "Fair Tax". Just like when we all knew "Hope and Change" was a farce and a cover for a socialist agenda I perceive "999" the same way. It is a cover for an agenda that involves destroying the IRS and restructuring Soc Security. The point is to get us in the majority in house and senate and a good man like Cain in the Whitehouse. If a little marketing is needed so be it. We know the rest of these clown only really want to tweak the tax code and not destroy it. They want business as usual.. Except for the nut Ron Paul that is.. I say, let go with and ride "999" all the way, and then ram the real change down the socialists throats just like the did Obamacare on us...

316 I'm fine with Romney if he's the nominee. And let's be honest, Christie isn't much more conservative on social issues or immigration than Romney. Main fear of a Romney presidency is that he governs weakly, trying to make the Left like him, instead of governing strong and doing what he can when he has the power. Obama used those first two years to ram Obamacare down our throats. The downside is the backlash, the upside (for the Left) is a radical change in the health care system. Is Romney willing to be that brave? I doubt it. I'm also worried he'll appoint squishes to the Court. But, hey, Bush ran as a mushy Compassionate Conservative and appointed two rock solid Supremes.

Patient care so bad, it's a crime. Neglect of old in 5th of hospitals breaks law, says report

"One in five hospitals is  breaking the law in its level of neglect of the elderly, a damning report revealed yesterday.

The Care Quality Commission found at least 20 hospitals where care was so poor that patients were denied ‘the basics in life’ – eating, drinking and going to the toilet.

This was a fifth of the hospitals investigated by the Government watchdog.

It warned that staff in some NHS trusts were ‘putting paperwork over people’.

Does anybody think that Perry might be doing a rope-a-dope with the field.  I have met him and spent some time around his team - he and they are very impressive, and smart, political people.  This is really noticable in the post debate Q and A at Dartmouth (over at Redstate), he is really, really good.  I find it almost impossible to believe that he remains quiet and slow in the debates but pours it on 10  minutes later.  I think he is letting the Cains, Bachmans and Newts have their 15 minutes of fame while setting the stage for the "dummy" to come back after they flame out.???  Followed by several high profile governor endorsements (Palin?)  Remember he has been RGA chairman twice.

350 Just to be clear, I'm not very keen on the whole nation-building aspect of Iraq and Afghan.

I'm thinking the Iraq experience was worth it, but only because they were a modern nation when we rolled in. At this point, the only reason to be in Afghanistan is as a way to influence what's going on in Pakistan, where the real action is.

352 I don't think Christie is that ultra-conservative. I think if he was in Senate his voting record would look like a moderate Republican. But he's shown he's willing to govern strongly. And in a blue state. So he's proven he has balls. And is willing to spend his political capital on what he believes. Romney governed as a mushy moderate when he had the chance. So the Right will have to ride herd on Romney to keep him line. I expect Romney to govern in what he perceives the center to be. So our job is to constantly push to the right to push the center as much to the right as possible.

375 @369 I basically agree with you. The Iraq WMD fiasco obviously hurt tremendously -- and helped pave the way for Obama and his 2 years of super majority. So just considering the Iraq War and occupation, by itself, was clearly worth it. They had a civilization capable of being rebuilt. But in the larger context, that it resurrected the hard Left, the Obama-left, the muck and slime of the worst of the Pelosi progressives ... two years of Obama with a supermajority in the Senate and Pelosi in the House, Obamacare, two far Left nutjob Supremes. Given all that ... I can't say it was worth it. In the 90s the hard Left, the Obama left, was near death. The Iraq War was what resurrected them. So, given that, in hindsight I would have preferred a short war and leaving the Iraqis to clean up the rubble. I would probably have preferred leaving Saddam alive if I knew that would prevent Obama from becoming President.

420 What I don't like about Romney is that he's a guy who will try to make the system work. The problem is that the system that has been in place since the New Deal is fundamentally flawed and cannot work; therefore, any attempt to fix it will fail. The whole thing has to be taken apart, brick by brick, and I don't think Romney is a guy who can do that. I don't even think he wants to take it apart.

Gingrich is a really, really smart guy, a true a-hole, and a political pragmatist. He glommed onto global warming when he thought that it was a winning issue with the public and if I am not mistaken he was a guy who thought that Medicare part D was a great idea because it would take one of the Democrats' weapons away. He is definitely conservative but it seems like he either tries to be too clever by half or he is too willing to forward bad ideas in order to win elections. Besides, I have a hard time trusting a guy who ditched his wife in the way that he did.

I like Cain but I am still a tad gunshy from last year, particularly Nevada and Colorado. His reaction to Perry's rock non-story was either knee-jerk or cravenly political; either way, I didn't like it.

Perry is disappointing me.

Ron Paul's foreign policy is anachronistic.

Bachmann, tard. Santorum, yeah right. Huntsman can go f himself.

So I recognize I'm not the mainstream of the social-cons and might not have an accurate perception of how they will vote. I'm very pro social-con since they are 1/3rd+ of the electorate or so and are the only reason we ever win elections. So I don't want to piss them off. I'm a happy member of a minority section of the right-wing coalition. Life, liberty, pursuit of happiness. In that order. I don't really give a damn about gay marriage -- but I'm happy to vote against it as long as that means we get to blow up some pissant country once or twice a decade. I scratch the social-cons back, they agree to fund the Laser Death Ray 3000. Win-win!

He's not the devil incarnate,  just a guy who maybe doesn't realize that this isn't a sport for those of us out here in average America.  For us,  it's our lives and our children's lives.

If he ends up the nominee I am going to work as hard as I can for him,  because Obama is set on wrecking this country.  Don't want another 4 years of Holder, Chu, Jarrett, Michelle, and SPEECHES ALL THE DAMN TIME.

However,  I actually think we should take a serious look at Perry.  Debates are only about 10% of the general election, and Perry has some other stuff going for him:

1. He looks good (a plus in the TV era)
2. He is an excellent retail campaigner
3. He makes excellent ads
4. He absolutely despises Obama.  This is needed.  I don't want to hear that he means well,  as Romney says.  I want to hear he's a job killer,  which is what Perry says.
5.  Perry is a man who does things.  He's not a talker.  We have had enough talk to last us through 3 presidencies.

483 While i kind of agree with recent complaints about the 9-9-9 plan in that once Congress gets its grubby hands on it, it'll be difficult for them to control themselves. Nor do I personally like the idea of a 9% tax on every kindle book, Itunes song or kosher bacon cheeseburger I buy.  I'd almost prefer a 9-9-if we really bleeping need it, 9 plan. But I equally think that the same people who make those complaints about congress' lack of control use this as an excuse to not fix the system. This is as close I think to a real flat tax and a simplified tax program as your going to get. And while he's not a polished politician, I actually like a citizen politician who isn't focus group tested 100 times.

Am I also the only one who would not run around screaming if Romney is the nominee? I will vote for him far more enthusiastically then i cast my vote for McCain (not like that's saying much) and think on the economy the guy will be outstanding. And as an out of work attorney, that would be very very nice. Yes he's liberal on alot of things but if he gets the economy humming again, stops surrendering American interests to our enemies and repeals Obamacare, for a first term I'll take it.

For social conservatives, if we have the House, the Senate and the Presidency, I don't think anything is going to happen that should make them nervous, and things will probably improve for them.  No more interference, no going after nativity scenes, etc.  I don't think they have anything to fear from Newt.

His numbers DO seem to be going up.  I really wanted Palin to enter the race so I wasn't paying that much attention to the others.  You can not help but appreciate the way he handles himself in the debates.  It reminded me how smart he is and that that is what we need right now.  I think Gingrich/Bolton would be awesome.

488 If conservatives can't get motivated enough to kick the socialist out of the WH, perhaps they are unmotivatable.

Reminds me of what happened in California last year.  There, in the biggest national wave election in many decades, conservative turnout was a problem in CA on Election Day -- in an election in which they faced the return of Jerry Brown and the best chance yet to get rid of Barbara Boxer.

The I'm-staying-home crowd will be the first and the loudest to complain when they see what Obama pulls in a second term.  And no matter what they say, they really don't comprehend how a second term of Jugears will finish off the country, or they wouldn't be entertaining these brain-damaged notions of staying home.

491 "448 438 I know plenty of folks who are leaving the party altogether if Romney is the nominee. I may not agree with it but it's a scary thought that all of our folks aren't voting." I heard Ed Rollins talk about polling done by the RNC & also by the Pew Foundation on this. All the polling results show a very sticky number of 25% of evangelicals who consistently maintain that the "will not under any circumstances" vote for a Mormon. Now, real life is more complicated of course. For example, the testing didn't set up to test the scenario of having to choose between a Mormon and a Muslim, let alone having to choose between a Mormon & someone believed or strongly suspected to be one or both of a Muslim & not a natural born American (which is made particularly 'real' by the fact that a very high percentage of those who believe the SCofMF is one or both of those - leave aside Black or Half-Black, which, say what you will about Cain, he appears to have proven fairly convincingly is not a deal-breaker, at least with very many). But that's really more of general election issue, & it's a lot more likely that the far simpler scenario of to Mormon or not to Mormon is very much in the mix in these primaries. So, if 25%, or so, of Republican primary voters will not, under any circumstances vote for Romney in the primaries, that's a pretty big handicap that might help explain why Romney's numbers have remained sticky to stagnant throughout this process. And to get to over 50% bound to oppose him under any circumstances, in the primaries at least, may well take something less than 25% more who are convinced he's a RINO or an unreliable flip-flopper or a liar or more than one of those. I watched O'Reilly & the Kraut agreeing with each other that Romney is inevitable & could well sew this up by February. It's number like that sticky 25% which suggest they're completely full of shit, and tho not blinded by the flip-flopper, liar, RINO factors, definitely out to lunch on the evangelical resistance factor. This could take quite a while.

492 "479 478 My gut tells me that we are not going to win back the Senate if Mitt's the nominee. It'll suppress conservative voter turnout. Posted by: Y-not at October 12, 2011 09:09 PM (5H6zj) Its not going to be the election of choosing the lesser of two evils. It will be the election of which candidate depresses their voters less." Current polling of Dems shows them 71% actively supporting re-election of Obama. The HIGHEST number Bill Clinton EVER reached of Dems actively supporting HIS re-election was 66%. This myth about Dems not coming out to vote for their SCofMF comes from two factors: first, the number of supporters who dropped from the top level of enthusiasm to the second level of enthusiasm, which if it shows up at all does so in working for the candidate, not in voting, and second, the extreme left progressive Dems, ie. might as well be Marxist-Leninists, finding multiple ways to be disappointed in him (drones, national security, no single payor, that sort of thing). The fact remains that those M-Ls still vote; in fact, they ALWAYS vote, which means, paradoxically, they are more likely to show up to vote for him than mere liberal Dems who are pretty much the same on him now as they were in 2008. Where Obama is falling down is with independents & - remember these folks? - moderate conservatives & even some Republicans who voted for him because they hated McCain or were scared of Palin, or else they didn't vote. That wasn't a very large percent, but it's not just one more against it's one less for, so it was double in 2008. I should have thought that's all gone now, what with 2010 and the Obama Depression; but it does sort of depend on who the RNC nominates.

493 9 % national sales tax is difficult to implement, then so easy for congress to raise to say...10% Also, it is easy for large companies to get around with vertical integration. Puts smaller biz at disadvantage.

it scares me that cain didn`t think his 999 plan through....how can you implement a plan that guts middle class retirees like this one will?....

retirees will be devastated by his plan....think retirees living off their savings....the national sales tax will create a huge, new tax burden for them...

their savings have already been taxed when originally earned under the income tax...and the dividends they`ve earned have been taxed already...now the sales tax would tax the same earnings again when they buy stuff?....on top of all the state, local sales and other peripheral taxes...

most of these folks aren`t rich....how can you put a plan out there without thinking it through?....does he think the libs aren`t going tp pounce on this slap-dash crap?......

throw this on top of gaffs like "greenspan i think they`re salvating at the thought of a cain nomination....he`ll get skewered in a debate with obama(particularly with the msm carrying his water.....

the main onjective is to remove obama....and i think newt or romney give us the best shot at doing that....and with a controlled congress, romney should be held in check....

i can`t believe how newt is being ignored and how the radio guys are savaging romney...rush has completely jumped the shark...the guy is dead to me...he`s running his own operation chaos on the republican party...

the guy`s gone batshit crazy....he needs to be bitchslapped back into reality...

it`s scaring me...
