— Ace Kind of a good ad, though. I've got no problems with it. She's using what she's got, and what she's got is dissatisfaction with the other candidates.
Bonus insult to the non-attacked candidates for not even rating.
I'm still suspicious of Bachmann's soft handling of Romney. Yes, she hits him on abortion. But this is so baked in the cake I wonder what possible good it could do to remind people.
Why not his continuing defense (by proxy) of Bachmann's bete noir, ObamaCare?
Thanks to soothsayer.

Ace, I'll bet my leftnut that in Michelle's personal view, she's hitting Romney the hardest.

Keep an eye on her House seat. She's said before that it's the White House or bust for her, but not a single person has filed to run for her presumably-open seat in Congress, even as every other Minnesota seat has drawn candidates. Everyone there knows that in spite of her statements to the contrary, she's going to try to slink back into that seat at the last possible moment before the filing deadline closes.
Until then, she's going scorched-earth on everybody else in the presidential race and the only purpose she can possibly serve is to damage the ultimate nominee. She knows she won't be President, Vice-President, Chief of Staff, or anything else in anyone's administration (unless she really is as crazy as she looks), so as long as she hangs on to the power she's got she doesn't care what kind of mess she makes nationally.

I don't think abortion is too baked in the cake. There's so much crap flying around right now, people can't keep straight all the basic tenets of conservativism that each candidate seems to violate.
All those people giving Newt a second look are forgetting how he was persona non grata just a few months ago- so bad that a random guy told him to quit before he embarrassed himself any further.

I was just checking Drudge. There's a Business Insider article linked "Obama has a Bush Moment in Bali."
The article was some pap about him not being able to get through a door or something. More importantly, about 25 comments in some guy wrote, "Obama is a SCOAMF."
Well done, morons.

Bachmann is the one candidate in the whole field whom I can really see going third-party.
This worries me. And now that RAWN PAUL!!!11! has said he won't run that way, it sorta kinda opens the door up for Bachmann to secure the delusional vote.

-Bachmann is a lost cause at this point.. she has already had her day in the sun and she wilted. We, in a desperate hour, have a real problem with disaffection. (some justified, some stoked by the media and basement/soros trolls)
I think these were all legitimate issues and anyone has a right to bring them up. But, that she would aggravate this messy situation in the tiny hopes of it benefiting her...
At this point I think for the good of conservatism she needs to get out so that the conservative vote can coalesce, around more plausible candidates. She at least needs to stop trying to make things worse as her only hail marys.
If she wants to put her campaign back on track
-solid debate performance
-high visibility spars with Obama admin
-put out some solid policy stuff
Instead she skips those three and goes right for the crotch punch, against allies.

You have no idea. A younger (around 35) friend of ours calls my wife the other day. Apparently an ex-roomate of hers (and a casual aquaintence of ours) called her and said she was surprised to find out that she was 30 weeks pregnant.
Now this woman never has been responsible during the entire time I've known her, ditching jobs, blowing off bills, floating from apartment to apartment and man to man. She currently has a gig as a bartewnder at one of the ghey bars downtown after being shitcanned from a thug bar just down the street.
Anyway, our friend asks her what's the plan. She replied that she'd just get an abortion. After 30 weeks. OUr friend suggested that it might be difficult to get one at that late stage and maybe she'd consider putting the baby up for adoption. She replied that she didn't think she could give the baby up.
Kill him, yes. Give him up? No fucking way.

It's that it is scary to the weaker candidate to take on the establishment directly. Bachmann and Cain expect Romney to be nominated. They see that all the super wealthy and connected establishment politicians are largely with this guy. They know he's got a lot of power over clear channel.
The soft touch to Romney is not a conspiracy. It's just the advantage being the establishment candidate brings. Only a true reformer would be willing to take Romney on in the most direct terms.
Any of the candidates who are just expecting to boost their profiles and run later or be elevated in the party probably are playing smart politics to not infuriate Romney.
I'm not suggesting Cain or Bachmann are fake candidates. I think they just realize they are long shots.

Cain obviously has had his problems too.
Romney is totally unacceptable because he's a liberal.
Newt has done incredibly well and has some successes in his past, but he's also got some bad calls, and a lot of people hold that against him.
Right now, I think Newt has the best chance of beating Obama and would be a good president. I like Perry more, and I'm not giving up on him, but late in the game we all need to unify around either Newt or Perry, in my opinion.

Meet your new favorite candidateÂ… Gary Johnson
Founder of one of New Mexico's largest construction companies, Johnson entered politics for the first time by running for Governor of New Mexico in 1994 on a conservative, low-tax, anti-crime platform. He beat incumbent Democratic governor Bruce King by 50% to 40%. He cut the 10% annual growth in the budget by using his gubernatorial veto on half of bills in the first six months. His use of the veto over his two terms gained him the nickname "Governor Veto".
He sought re-election in 1998, winning by 55% to 45%. In his second term, he concentrated on the issue of school voucher reforms, as well as campaigning for marijuana decriminalization. During his tenure as governor, he adhered strictly to an anti-tax, anti-bureaucracy program, and set state and national records for his use of veto powers: more than the other 49 contemporary governors put together. Term-limited, Johnson could not run for reelection at the end of his second term.
WhatÂ’s not to like?

Time for a war story. Back when I was a baby DA and I didn't know anything, I was assigned to a misdemeanor domestic violence caseload. One of the defendants was a smoking hot blond who was crazy as hell. She had an affair with a former mayor but when he found out that she had gone guano, he dumped her. That's when the trouble started.
She began to harass him unmercifully. My mere words cannot conjure the pure crazy that she left on his answering machine (as we called them in those days) but I do recall her accusing him of giving her dog a venereal disease. So she was charged with telephone harassment, I told her that I would grant her a deferred judgment (pursuant to which if she stayed out of trouble the case would eventually be dismissed) but warned her that I did not want to see her back.
Just to reiterate, the most important point in the story thus far is that she was smoking hot. Accordingly she took up with a fireman. Same story. He dumped her and she went even more guano. I told her that I was going to convict her on the first case, convict on the second case but not send her to jail. Again I warned her do not come back.
After that things calmed down. I was promoted to felony work and forgot about her. Then maybe eighteen months later, she came in on a more serious matter. It seems the fireman had gotten himself a fiance. One Friday night when the fireman wasn't there, fiance turned around to see guano girl in her living room telling her that fireman didn't love fiance but really loved guano girl and guano girl needed to leave. Guano girl scared the bejeesus out of fiance. Fiance called me and urged me to hammer her. I told her to not worry, that I was sick of this shit, and guano girl was going to have to go to the crossbar hotel.
A few hours later, I got a call from fireman who told me that he and guano girl had a deal. On Friday nights if fiance wasn't around, he would leave the porch light on and guano girl would come over for some hot monkey sex. He had been gone that Friday and fiance, not realizing the import of her actions, had turned the porch light on. The felony involved entering a residence uninvited and guano girl thought that she was invited so therefore she had committed no major crime. I told fireman to tell fiance or that I would. A few hours later, fiance called me and told me that she knew.
The point of this story is twofold: 1) Men are pigs especially when smoking hot girls are involved even if they have gone guano and 2) No matter how much I may think otherwise, I don't always know what I'm talking about.

My problem with him sharing the couch with Pelosi is not that he believes in AGW (he said, before the commercial even came out, that he doesn't, and that wasn't the point), but that he believes the answer to GW (anthropogenic or otherwise) starts with policy in Washington, DC.
I was telling everyone who would listen that the problem with any Presidential Candidate who said "I'll tackle health care reform," was that they'd be trampling over Federalism even back in 2008 (I didn't dislike RomneyCare as much then- but I knew less about it and hadn't really considered what it meant. As soon as I did, I condemned it as 'soft tyranny.').

And you don't need to invoke some form of altruism, it's sheer strategy and posturing on her part. If you can't win, don't be the Brutus who fatally stabs the winner in the back when you need a job in a year or so.

Oh please. The only criticism I have ever seen some of the most fervent Romney supporters here give of him is that "he's not perfect" and that's it. There is an excuse for everything, from Romneycare was actually the democrats fault, and he was in a liberal state so that's why he's done liberal things. All problems people have with Romney is because of them not him according to those fans. If they actuall concede a position Romney has that does hurt him it will be a first.

Frankly, I see much deeper fanaticism for Romney than I do even for Cain, or ever saw for Palin. Some believe he is truly stainless, brilliant, and of excellent character, and get furious when it's shown none of these things are necessarily so.
It's good to see Romney fans present a more honest and balanced view. I'm sure this is the majority of Romney's supporters. The goofy ones tends to be more vocal, after all.

And after all those nice things that were said about me (thanks guys) you had to go ruin it!
There is an excuse for everything,
No there isn't.
from Romneycare was actually the democrats fault,
Actually I prefer the - government created a problem, free health care through the ER guaranteed. So now we need to solve the problem - that's my favorite.
and he was in a liberal state so that's why he's done liberal things.
Actually his record governing was more conservative than Huckster's (except for that damnable gun tax - jerk). I go with the facts - science guy that I am - and look at actual records. Side note - this is why I was nervous with Cain, no voting record, but Cain took care of that problem by opening his mouth on a daily basis.
All problems people have with Romney is because of them not him according to those fans.
The previous posters were very nice and polite - so I'm not going to paint them with that brush, but YOU - its all your fault that no one likes Romney.
If they actuall concede a position Romney has that does hurt him it will be a first.
Yea! I'm the first - is there a prize?

Jeff - you the man! Too bad the old Star Trek got replaced by the leftist utopia vision of the future called, "Star Trek, the Next Hippie Generation" (or something like that). Star Trek was better when Kirk got into a fist fight with the alien bad guy and then kissed the hot alien chick! After that they moved on to the next alien bad guy and hot alien chick.
New version, "Captain, the enemy ship is fire on us!" Shields up number One! Let's give them a taste of harsh diplomatic language and then see how well they hold up!" (and it worked!) Only in the future can French captain manage diplomacy so well that his enemies fall before him by the power of his words. This was good prep for people to elect Obama.

Haven't seen you comment enough to ever consider you one of Romney's most fervent supporters or one of those that consider him some flawless candidate.
Posted by: buzzion at November 18, 2011 01:25 PM (GULKT)
No one considers Mitt a "flawless" candidate. Only the best candidate this year. And possibly in the last twenty years... but he certainly has flaws... although mostly his flaws are that he can't overcome the impression that voting for Romney is a straight ticket to the fires of hell.
Even those a bit sketching of the topic of hell are scared by the threat. What if it is true? Voting for Mitt would put me on the short list for hell! Better vote for Newt then.
This Primary is absolutely insane.

hahahaha
See? hahahahahahahahahahahaha
Maybe signing Romneycare was an ENORMOUS flaw.
Just saying he has flaws vaguely is a huge cop out. Saying his flaw is that he can't overcome our impression of him is similar to saying he's flawless.
Maybe grabbing guns and flip flopping on abortion show some kind of character defect? Maybe?
Maybe being AWOL when the party needed more leadership to oppose Obamacare was a problem? Romney could have helped shut it down. His support for Romneycare was a big argument from the left that OBamacare was centrist. Romney was in hiding until it was too late.
He's ducked out of tough calls, and also shown weakness (such as with that Ohio law).
I'm sorry, but I am conservative and Romney, to my view, is not conservative. If he says something conservative, it's in order to pander. Same as when he says something liberal. I don't trust Romney to do much good, other than just not being Obama (which I admit, is some good).
There's nothing insane about this view.
Posted by: Dustin at November 18, 2011 01:50 PM (rQ/Ue)
In what universe is Romney liberal and Newt not?
On second thought, you are right, Newt's politics are actually the equivalent of a bi-sexual.
He goes both ways... and then maybe a third or fourth to boot.
It pretty much depends on who is paying his "consulting fees".
It is legal in Vegas, it must be legal in DC now too.
Newt is pretty much what ever the day calls for. Today he is a DC outsider... that's what Freddie Mac paid him for... his total outside Washingtonness... because they couldn't have wanted an influential insider to carry water for them. That would have been worth oh say 1.6 million or so. And that is far too much to pay in order to stick it to the American people.
Posted by: petunia at November 18, 2011 01:57 PM (hgrmi)
Not an argument.
Are you saying Romney isn't liberal? No. You're defending him by bashing someone else.
"Newt's politics are actually the equivalent of a bi-sexual."
You're complaining about flip flopping? In Romney's defense, you're harshly rejecting those who flip flop?
hahahahahaha
Look, if you're shilling against Romney, I think you are exceedingly clever.
Posted by: Dustin at November 18, 2011 02:06 PM (rQ/Ue)
So who is trustworthy Dustin?
Perry? Yes if you make a big enough campaign contribution you might even get an executive order...
Gingrich? Hmmm he got paid 37 million for his CURRENT healtcare plan that has a mandate for everyone who makes 50,000 to buy insurance... and a government bond for those under 50,000. That is Newt's current Plan for us. Oh, he forgot to mention that when he attacked the questioner at the debate didn't he... don't you ever wonder why when he doesn't like a question he attacks the one asking? Trust Gingrich... then you are a fool.
If there were just a candidate that never let anyone in his life down. Not his parents, not his wife, not his children, not his business associates, not his constituents... if there was just a guy who's word was good... If there was someone like that people would call him plastic. And they would attack him for doing what his constituents wanted when he was elected governor of a liberal state.
Keeping your word is plastic in the Republican party. Everyone knows that you can't trust a man who keeps his word, honors his family and business associates and his constituents... that would be wrong.
It be much better to find a pay to play politician or a serial sex addict cheater who didn't make a promise that couldn't be broken.
Because that is what it really means to be conservative.
Posted by: petunia at November 18, 2011 02:08 PM (hgrmi)
Hey Dustin... that's what we are doing picking among them. So flip flopping is relative. And the biggest flip flopper is Newt.
Besides abortion what exactly do you say Mitt flip flopped on?
It has become conventional wisdom, but that doesnt' make it true.
Posted by: petunia at November 18, 2011 02:10 PM (hgrmi)
Yes, I am saying that Mitt Romney is not liberal. That is a lie.
Mitt Romney is more conservative than any of the others.
Posted by: petunia at November 18, 2011 02:11 PM (hgrmi)
Okay - how do you solve the other mandate of government that anyone gets free health care through the ER? The best solution is to just so no, you do not get free healthcare by just showing up. Romney came up with a solution that both sides could support. (This whole issue was never even brought up against him in 08 - many conservatives praised it). How would you have solved it? Remember the game, you have to solve the problem and 85% of legislation is on the left.
Just saying he has flaws vaguely is a huge cop out. Saying his flaw is that he can't overcome our impression of him is similar to saying he's flawless.
Agree - these things need to addressed. The second sentance is a big, "what?" - Romney has flaws, some real, some preceived and it is up to him to overcome that.
Maybe grabbing guns and flip flopping on abortion show some kind of character defect? Maybe?
This is a fantastic illustration over critic over-reach, just as bad is fanboy blinders. Romney never did a gun grab. He stinks on the 2nd amendment but this is hyperbole - it weakens you the critic.
As for abortion - Reagan would fail your test as well. Getting pretty fanatic on your standard. With that said - Romney's original stance is an example of pure political pander.
Maybe being AWOL when the party needed more leadership to oppose Obamacare was a problem? Romney could have helped shut it down.
Just because the press was not giving him attention does not mean he was AWOL - who was the most helpful in getting Scott Brown elected? Romney often promoted Brown as the means to stop Obamacare. Brown credited Romney with being very helpful in his run for senate.
His support for Romneycare was a big argument from the left that OBamacare was centrist. Romney was in hiding until it was too late.
See above -Romney was not hiding and was very critical of Obamacare. Romney did not want to be tied to the 2000+ page perversion called Obamacare. Romney's plan if I remember right was about 150 pages, focused on getting government out of providing health care and get the freeloaders off the system. So the anti - Romney could say Romney opposed it because they did want the political association, but then why not just disassociate yourself from it?
Again, I remember in 08 how many on the right were praising Romney's healthcare bill. Funny how things change.
He's ducked out of tough calls, and also shown weakness (such as with that Ohio law).
No argument here - Mitt is too cautious! Stand up Mitt.
I'm sorry, but I am conservative and Romney, to my view, is not conservative. If he says something conservative, it's in order to pander. Same as when he says something liberal. I don't trust Romney to do much good, other than just not being Obama (which I admit, is some good).
The conservative purity test is so heavy this election cycle that Michael Reagan pointed out how his dad would never pass test. Mitt actually has a good record of doing a lot of good in business and yes government. His record as a problem solver is very solid - it is more than talk. Perfect no way the only perfect candidate would be me.
There's nothing insane about this view.
No - but parts of it are flawed and a bit simplistic. Others are spot on.
Posted by: Evan at November 18, 2011 02:31 PM (O3OlP)
Petunia - that is not correct. Mitt is not the most conservative amongst our candidates. That title would go to Bachman. It does not help Mitt supporters to distort the reality of things.
I support Mitt because of his success at solving problems in the past - not just talk, but he is not as conservative as I am or some of the candidates running this round.

Yes, but there are fanatics on all sides - I think Paul supports win that contest. Plus petunia sounds like my mom - who is in her 80s and has a huge crush on Mitt. She will vote for Mitt, because he is good looking.

This is a fantastic illustration over critic over-reach, just as bad is fanboy blinders. Romney never did a gun grab. He stinks on the 2nd amendment but this is hyperbole - it weakens you the critic."
He did sign into law a bill that banned guns, and he did say MA has very tough gun laws and he supports them.
Calling this 'gun grabber' is obviously hyperbole, as Romney is not raiding houses and grabbing guns, but I thought it was a rather mild colloquialism.
"The conservative purity test is so heavy this election cycle that Michael Reagan pointed out how his dad would never pass test."
Agreed. Though I think Perry's 90% agreement with me being rejected is much closer to Reagan's views than Romney, who, after all, has decried the idea he's going to govern like Reagan (obviously not in this election, but in past ones).
"
Again, I remember in 08 how many on the right were praising Romney's healthcare bill. Funny how things change."
I didn't. I think forcing people to buy something they do not is terrible government. It's wrong, and trying to use that level of government intrusion is going to have many accidental effects, so it's also incompetent government.
Yes, in 2008, the right tried to rally behind Romney instead of Mccain. I'm not sure that was a good idea. No kidding, but even though I voted Romney over Mccain in 2008, I would vote Mccain over Romney if I had to chose between the two of them (I guess I might not vote at all in the primary if those are my choices).
Posted by: Dustin at November 18, 2011 06:17 PM (rQ/Ue)
I agree - but remember that there is the unfunded mandate of free health care for all through ERs. That to is very wrong - but no one seems to be mentioning that this go around. Your Gov. of a state with 85% dems in the legislature - how do you solve the problem? Or do you just dodge it and leave it for the next guy?
Romney really did do the best he could and I understand why he is not backing away from it. It was a good solution for the state of Mass - and the cynical side of me realizes that as a politician he is working to reverse the flipper meme.
