— DrewM I put this in the headlines last night but since I've been pounding on Newt pretty good for the last few days, it only seems fair to give this a post too.
Gingrich and Ryan traded emails and spoke on the phone, a call that “went really well,” Gingrich’s spokesman Rick Tyler told Fox News. The former House speaker also held two conference calls with Tea Party leaders, one on Monday night and one Tuesday morning, to explain what he meant by his comments Sunday on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Politico reported. “We’ve tried to correct the record and admit it could have been done better,” Tyler told Politico. “We move on.”
Gingrich went "On the Record" with Greta van Susteren Tuesday night to respond to criticism over his comments.
"I want to set a precedent for new kinds of presidential campaigns," he told van Susteren. "I made a mistake and I called Paul Ryan today, who's a very close personal friend, and I said that."
Before the apology, Gingrich spent a good part of the day doing damage control with bloggers and other pundits. During one of the conference calls Newt tried to make lemonade out of lemons by tying his rough (to be polite) first week in the race with Ronald Reagan.
“Every once and awhile there's going to be a problem, and you gotta spend three or four days fixing it,” he said. “If you go back and look at Ronald Reagan's record, the opening week of the campaign in Sept. 1980, they didn't have a very good week. And they had to go back and fix it. This happens occasionally. The trick is to relax, look at it, try to figure out what happened, and keep moving.”
And with that candidates comparing themselves to Reagan hasn't only Jumped the Shark, it's been ripped to shreds and eaten by the shark.
Newt also said he was surprised by the adversarial tone of the Meet the Press interview and wasn't ready for it. Mind you, he's been on the show 30 something times over the years,. He should also know that even if they've been nice to him while he was out of office and chilling on the global warming couch with Nancy Pelosi, now that he's even a remote threat to Obama (he's not really but the MFM doesn't take chances), he's going to be destroyed by the press.
Poor Newt, no friends on the left or right any more.
Actually, that' not entirely true. The obnoxious Dana Milbank comes to Newt's defense. However one gets the feeling this new found respect for Gingrich is simply a club with which to beat up on the GOP and conservatives. As Slu notes, Milbank wasn't always such a fan of Newt or the old GOP.
Hackery, thy name is Millbank.

Even without the Ryan attack, that goes to show he shouldn't be considered as a candidate. The only place any GOP member should agree to appear with Al Sharpton is in a courtroom, with Sharpton as the defendant and said GOP person on the jury.

Newt has always been, to me, the epitome of the "which way is the wind blowing" politician. In that respect I think he's worse than Romney, because I at least believe that Romney has a set of political beliefs and values that are fairly steady. I don't necessarily share them all, and he changes his outward support of them by the hour like a snake shedding its skin, but at least he HAS them. Newt, on the other hand, has all the moral and ideological steadfastness of an oil slick. There is absolutely nothing there that can't be exchanged in favor of what he sees as politically expedient. It's a testament to his current tone deafness that he seems to think belittling Ryan's fiscal plan was the politically prescient thing to do. Walking it back now is utterly useless. He not only showed himself to be politically tone deaf, but he came out looking just plain stupid. He was already damaged goods; now he's not just damaged, but toxic.
Get out of the race, Newt. You're done.

Why did Newt endorse Cap&Tax institutionalized theft?
Why did Newt call a plan to stop (D)emocrats from spending 140% of what the Government can possibly collect on buying votes... "extreme" and "rightwing social engineering".
An apology isn't good enough because it won't make up for the next 2 years of TV commercials featuring Newt Gingrich endorsing Communism.

He did more harm than good in his damage control spinning. I'd have a modicum of respect for him if he just came out and said, yep, I screwed up. Instead he tried to justify everything and blame his remarks on Lurch Gregory. Sorry Newt. We all know Gregory is a massive partisan hack, what did you expect? His apology wasn't really an apology. Bit of history - it was the snakes invading the high ground during the monsoon that broke Alexander's army. After one monsoon the troops demanded to get the hell out of India. Alexander listened. Newt is using his old playbook. Say something "brash, striking, and cutting" and then visit all the network tards to explain the statement. He did this all the time in the 90s. What he seems to have forgotten is the 90s press actually felt some requirement to report news and explain it. Now they just man the ovens.

“Medicare is going to be part of the 2012 campaign, one way or another, and Newt would like to help the Republicans design a winning plan that the country will support,” Tyler continued. 'If you try to impose it on the country, you’ll pay a huge political price, you’ll be out of power and you won’t get it done.'
In a sign that Gingrich plans no retreat, Tyler added: 'Newt Gingrich has a record of achievement on large-scale, historic change. When he offers advice on Medicare reform, I’d listen to him. And part of that advice is: You need a political plan to go along with your policy plan, so that you can convince the country that where you want to take them is where they want to go.'”

"The literati sent out their minions to do their bidding. Washington cannot tolerate threats from outsiders who might disrupt their comfortable world. The firefight started when the cowardly sensed weakness. They fired timidly at first, then the sheep not wanting to be dropped from the establishmentÂ’s cocktail party invite list unloaded their entire clip, firing without taking aim their distortions and falsehoods. Now they are left exposed by their bylines and handles. But surely they had killed him off. This is the way it always worked. A lesser person could not have survived the first few minutes of the onslaught. But out of the billowing smoke and dust of tweets and trivia emerged Gingrich, once again ready to lead those who wonÂ’t be intimated by the political elite and are ready to take on the challenges America faces."
I'm speechless.
