Nifty Science Video Thread
— LauraW

You know what? The current political drama is pluckin' my last nerve so much it sounds like bluegrass music. Need a little break.

Fun Video Friday

Is this something? Oh, you bet your bippy it is.

I'ma try this tomorrow. Bet it works better when you soak the clay pots first.

Please post links to other cool fun stuff in the comments, and we will verbally abuse and delight you.

Thanks to scott.

Madam, are you insulting the simple genius of Bluegrass music by comparing it to the discordant kabuki dance of clowns?

OK.

4 It really is a fun idea. I'd like to stash one of these constructions in the woods near our favorite little lake spot so we didn't have to haul a cooler every time.

Problem: clay pots will break outdoors in Winter.

17 A friend in New Mexico was complaining about the failure of his swamp cooler (a similar-principle evaporative AC unit). Works well if you have the conditions for it, but not so practical here where humidity is relatively high during the hot months.

That cooler works on the same priciple as a "swamp cooler." Evaporative cooling. Don't work too well in a swamp, though.

25 My folks got a stand-alone full size freezer when I was a few months old. I forget the brand, I think it was one JC Penney's was offering at the time. There's an amusing story about how much it cost us (nothing), but I won't bore you with it.

We still have it. And it still works fine. Forty years later.

See if you can say that about that crap at Best Buy in 2051. (Assuming we have the infrastructure to support such miracles...)

Who knew that in order to function properly, evaporative coolers needed moisture to actually, um, evaporate? What if we in the sub-tropical south could build a machine that removes moisture from the enclosed space while at the same time cooling it? That would do well to keep food fresh longer.

The cooling of your ardor to "hit it" is the scientific principle at work for this refrigerator.

The cooling of your ardor to "hit it" is the scientific principle at work for this refrigerator.

Maybe it'd cool down after hitting it.

Posted by: dudeformerlyinsantacruz at July 29, 2011 07:53 AM (n0JPF)

36 Evaporation causes cooling. The water takes heat energy from the pot to evaporate into water vapor, which causes the internal chamber temp to fall. The relative humidity where you live will affect the cooling rate and final temp.

Yes. If you bake this device at 350 degrees for two hours, anything you place inside will experience time travel.

You know what this reminds me of? G Gordon Liddy.

In his autobiography, he talked about serving his Watergate sentence in a run-down prison where sewage pipes dripped into the mess hall serving line. To stay healthy, he only ate cold cereal and boxed milk stolen from the mess hall, and he built a small evaporative cooler to keep the milk cool using a stolen fan, bucket & towel.

46 I used to be stationed at Edwards AFB in the high desert of California (dry lake beds and all that...) Base housing there was equipped with swamp coolers. they were good for about 25 degrees F delta from ambient (and this is a BEST case since this was a desert after all). The problem was that temps in the summer would get to about 115 F! That leaves your lovely home at about 90 F.

50 "As others have stated, this simply will not work if there is significant humidity."

Yeah, it'll work, just won't get as cold, but it will work. Since moisture will still evaporate even at 90% humidity, it may not get as cold, but it will last much longer.
