Nightside Hurricane Irene Update and ONT (tmi3rd)
— Open Blogger

As ever, hi there, Morons and Moronettes, and welcome to this evening's combined Irene update and overnight thread. As this is my first ONT, I'm a little nervous about this one, so let's get to the serious side first and then we'll get to the fun.

Bullet points about Irene: 1) still headed for the NYC area and likely to get there at hurricane strength, 2) and importantly- the winds increase sharply with height. 20 and 30 stories up, the wind is going to whip through at about 20 percent higher speed than at the surface. If you're up in the air, make for damn sure you're not near the windows. Anything in the air that high should be considered a real threat.

Update: Tornado Watch in effect until 5 AM for all of DE, the greater Philadelphia area, NYC, Long Island, southern CT, coastal Maryland, and all of NJ.

So let's go below the fold for details... 5-day.gif

The storm's forward motion hiccuped a little bit today, and this creates a bit of a bad situation for Long Island Sound. High tide is supposed to be 11 AM on Sunday, and the National Weather Service is calling for tides to be as high as 11 feet above normal.

For New York Harbor and the Long Island South Shore, high tide is supposed to be 8 AM. Water won't be quite as high, but Category 1 storm surge guidance calls for 5-10 feet above normal with water.

Inland flooding will be a concern- guidance with this storm calls for 6-12 inches of rain, and as I understand it, it hasn't exactly been dry over in that neck of the woods.

Tomorrow, we'll shift the updates over to cover New England... CT, MA, RI, NH, and ME have their own fun coming up. It'll probably be a strong tropical storm, but it'll have its own little quirks to deal with.

Finally, not that you need any reminders, but don't go out in this stuff, and for damn sure don't go to the beach. As cool as these are to watch (and believe me, it's awesome to watch God put on His Big Show), you're not only putting yourself in danger, but you're also making work for emergency crews. Don't become a Darwinian statistic, please.

So enough of that shit- let's have some fun!

Bearded Collie Puppies

The bearded collie is the official dog of the tmi3rd household. Great with kids, very obedient, very smart... and I usually have to take Mackenzie (her name) for about a 5K run daily. Not a sedentary dog, but such a huge personality. Very huggy and kissy. She wuvs her Daddy, and her Daddy wuvs her.

Today's Physics Lesson: Levers

I got nothing.

A bit of music in honor of the return of Beavis and Butthead...

Tonight's ONT has been brought to you by the Air Force's 53rd Weather Reconnaissance Squadron, the Hurricane Hunters:

I had the good fortune to fly with these guys into Ivan in 2004.

If you're on Facebook, come find us over there, and most of the co-bloggers have their Twitter feeds you can follow as well. Mine can be found at my handle.

Finally, thanks to our noble host, who allows us the use of his megaphone. One of the things that we don't get to see about him all that often is what a gentleman he truly is, and I'm proud to know him and call him my friend.

Over to you, folks- have at it!

14 Just got an emergency tornado watch warning in Philly over cable.  You can barely hear the audio (I doubt they're saying anything important) and the 2 pages of the message (they couldn't fit it on one, evidently) look like they were written on an Imsai 8080.  I am instilled with great confidence ...

Oops!  Here's another one.  They shortend its effective time boundary from 11:08 to 10:53.  That's 15 safe weather minutes saved or created by the stuttering messiah!  Wow.

39 Oh, and before I forget- at night, a rain-wrapped tornado is damn near impossible to see. If you get a warning for one, it'll be small, but take that fucker seriously. We had one touch down in my parents' backyard during Katrina, and it just barely missed the house, but wreaked a hell of a lot of havoc as it left the yard.

I'd rather he were on the golf course.  I'd feel safer.

Luckily, I don't have to deal with hurricane Bloomberg.  He's shut down more of the city than any hurricane.  They're probably going to cut power off for people who stayed, just to stick it to them.

The Verizon thugs gave in too quickly.  They could have cut every wire in sight and blamed it all on Irene.  And Verizon would probably have to hire them back quickly just to get the repairs done.  The poor little union thugs screwed the pooch by a week ...

67 NavyCopJoe- I'd figure it'll get there as a strong tropical storm. As she's going to be on the northeastern side of the storm, that's where a lot of nasty shit can happen. She needs to be vigilant, but I'd say that she can expect winds of 45-60 mph where she is, and throughout New England, for that matter. She needs to not be near the water, as seas will be running 4-8 feet above normal.

Going to watch my Tivo-ed Red Eye from last night and getting nothing but stale, yet breathless, Hurricane Irene is hundreds of miles from coming ashore and is no danger to anyone at this point, but we're covering it at 3 in the morning anyway news.

That sucks.

95 Finally, thanks to our noble host, who allows us the use of his megaphone. One of the things that we don't get to see about him all that often is what a gentleman he truly is, and I'm proud to know him and call him my friend.

Ace got my girl-friend pregnant, steals my newspapers and magazines out of my mailbox, and pisses in my begonias, whenever the mood strikes him.

Eh.  I don't want to waste my time upgrading.  I want it closed up and forgotten about unless absolutely necessary like when my video card crapped out and I needed a new one.  Though I maybe should have checked the dimensions before buying because that new sucker barely fit in the tower, and my tower is huge.

192 I must be on the idiot side of a moronette but I still anticipate and chuckle every single time Steevy makes the introductions on every post. What sort of a truly stuttering fuck of a husband would ever say, "Don't get in the way of Michelle and the tamale table?" Something is wrong here. Cloaking snide remarks about your spouse in, what they perceive as a humorous jibe, well, I've witnessed these quips before, uttered by either the husband or wife, and all couples ended up in divorce courts. Which only adds to the multitude of examples that Obama is a stuttering fuck of a miserable failure.

193 Here in Austin, we've had 70+ days of triple digit heat. Hottest summer ever recorded.

The food in NO is definitely amazing. I'm surprised I didn't have to buy a second airplane seat because I ate so much. On the other hand, the constant walking in the heat maybe balanced out the binging.

198 Wow, Irene sure made a nice photo op for President Gutsy Call. Almost as good as the photo they got of him all concerned and focused, watching the tv screen while Obama bin Laden was being assassinated. But not as good as the one they got of him saluting at the return of the remains of the 25 navy seals who were killed. Oh wait, some of the family members had asked that no photos be taken, and at least one said that they didn't want it politicized. Oh well, screw them ,he got a nice pic for his reelection campaign. Ya, just spent 5 minutes composing a comment only to have the post go poof.

Basically, this Geller stuff is crap... the members of the Texas State Board of Education are elected, thus Gov. Perry has little to do with their activities other than endorsements.  More importantly, the Board's composition has swung substantially to the right in the past few years, and the left  was apoplectic last year when it made major changes to the liberal's alternative-reality based history books.  A very important action as Texas is the second largest market in the US, so this will influence books used by many jurisdictions.

Rick Perry will be elected President of the United States of America.

254 Here's some ruh roh on Perry (personally, I like it). It seems Perry was visiting Iowa and he was asked about the ethanol mandate. The farmers did NOT like his answer. He said he was for free market competition....oh the horror!

A little background on this -- Recently the subsidy on ethanol was cut, but the mandate was left in place. The mandate is a steadily escalating requirement that more and more ethanol be used in gasoline blends. Without that requirement (read as law), you probably would see ethanol usage in gas plummet.

Here's the link and here's a blurb:

Iowa farmers werenÂ’t happy with the answer presidential candidate Rick Perry gave them today about an ethanol mandate that requires the petroleum industry to put the corn-based fuel in gas pumps.

I am definitely willing to believe though that commenters here were referring to her site as "Atlas Jugs"  since she was bikini blogging.

Definitely.  But it wasn't Ace himself and she knows how Ace runs his blog.  I'm thinking she's more butthurt about Ace not linking to her blog more often than over a petty, non-existent insult.

and if she didn't want to call attention to her breasts, she shouldn't have done v-logs in a bikini.  Is that so hard to follow?  People are stupid.

In a nutshell, if you're married, sleep with one eye open. Husbands and wives are killing each other all over the place. Love is a many splendored thing.

Love and Hate are two sides of the same coin.

And have a good night.

270 267 Oooh, nice! I am a tad scared of knives. I never used to be, but I had a bad experience in the parking lot of a grocery store in downtown Long Beach that really did a number on me. I have had guns pulled on me and didn't bat an eye, but the machete did scare me. (And I ain't easily scared!)

Posted by: MissTammy at August 28, 2011 12:03 AM (SsG4J)

what were you doin in the LBC? thats a bad neighborhood. you should be scared. those are bad people who do shit like that.

its ok to be afraid. im kinda afraid of guns. once you blow a horses brains out you realize  Wow this tool's purpose is for real. Its results are permanent. And i never want that thing happening to me. so im very careful with guns.

276 "A very important action as Texas is the second largest market in the US, so this will influence books used by many jurisdictions. " Part of the issue with textbooks is how they are purchased. In states like Michigan, each local district picks whatever textbooks they want, for math for example. In Texas, the state picks for the whole state, so it is a huge purchase. If a company that prints math textbooks sells to Texas, they get the entire state. In Michigan they sell to individual districts. So they make sure that the content of their books is approved by the Texas board of education.

I was terrified, I admit it (which is not easy for me, as I am rather proud about not being afraid of anything!), til he got that machete in a position where I thought he was going to do something with it that was so horrifying to me that I just totally freaked out and started screaming and kicking and going absolutely berserk.

And do you know that when the effing LBPD showed up, the bitch who took my statement had the nerve to insinuate that I was trying to make it a race issue, because I told her that the guy had a Spanish accent and a Virgin of Guadalupe tattoo?? I hate California, I really do, though Orange County is much better than LA.

304 Ok, I have a random question.

Why is it when you do stomach crunches, the first hundred or two are barely noticeable, and you only really feel it near the end of your set, but with push ups you know can feel it within the first few even when you can do a lot more?

Posted by: 18-1 at August 27, 2011 08:50 PM (FBr/C)

305

It's almost 1am here in Virginia Beach.  We lost power for a few hours, but are back up and running again.  A few of the houses on the beach have fallen off their stilts and into the sand.  There was a small tornado that hit a part of the beach.  The bridges and tunnels out of town were closed for a while - one of them has been reopened while the other remains closed.  Our neighbor's tree fell on her back deck, but missed hitting the house.  Other than losing a few shingles and some street flooding, we're doing fine.  Some people haven't been so lucky, as the flood waters are standing several feet deep and have flooded their houses.

The storm is on its way out, but we're still experiencing quite a bit of rain and some gusts in excess of 55 mph.  This storm was nowhere near as bad as Isabel in 2003.  We lost power for nearly a week with that one, and so many trees were down that I couldn't even get out of the neighborhood.

Funny thing about using knives as tools, one of the big culture shocks for me in coming to CA was that none of the men out here seemed to have pocket knives. I'd forever be asking some guy to gimme his knife to open a box or something, and they had no clue.

yeah how weird is that?

daddy and the Old man always had knives and taught me i always needed one too. they are great. 1001 uses.

Grimmy gave me some basic self defense. i think the problem is that most self defense isnt taught by people who really expect you to defend yourself. they teach you to struggle and buy time till help comes... I was taught to "flail effectively" because i had stalkers and often i would have to assume there is no help coming.

logprof,

Yes, we are more inland (closer to Chesapeake on the Kempsville Road / Centerville Tpk area), so we thankfully didn't experience the flooding that some of my relatives have faced (especially in the Ghent area of Norfolk).  This particular hurricane is probably on par with Gloria, which hit in 1985.

323 Dell, if you're still up, I'm planning to shift over to New England coverage tomorrow. I'm emphasizing NYC and the coastal areas because the primary cause of fatalities in hurricanes is flooding. You're not going to see much out of this other than a lot of rain and probably tropical storm force winds, but I haven't forgotten about you.

Most common muggers and such are cowards and wont go after a target they think will fight back.  And you cannot count on the police many times either.

With a little training and advice, you'll be comfortable with using a knife or even a gun for self-defense.  Guns are better in my opinion - God created man, but Sam Colt made them equal.

With a little training and advice, you'll be comfortable with using a knife or even a gun for self-defense.  Guns are better in my opinion - God created man, but Sam Colt made them equal.

Posted by: Kratos (Ghost of Sparta) at August 28, 2011 01:15 AM (c0A3e)

and a bunch of liberals made those guns illegal to carry and a legal danger to use in california. SO i use the tool i use every day, that is comfy in my hand. IN danger i will not have time to think and if someone wants to hurt me a dedicated truly bad person will find a way. Grim bought me a chance.

337 I'm not saying the East Coast doesn't have a problem with this storm, but I will say that it has been way over hyped. The media really wants to see dead people. I don't want that. Full disclosure, I live out here in fly over country and have noticed that when a blizzard happens for 3 or 4 days, the national media doesn't even notice or care.

339 My front door opens to an entry hall next to my kitchen. If it's after hours and I'm not expecting someone, I'll answer the door "while prepping dinner" -- with some handy steel behind my back. It's not paranoia if you live in interesting times.

It's not that I have any special training or anything.....it's that I'll have the advantage of surprise.

340 An idiot Kos Kid posts a story about a green initiative that rots:

I go to a university that's making a big green push -- we'll call it the University of Derp. The University of Derp has built all sorts of new eco-friendly buildings and put forward excellent initiatives to reduce its impact on the environment and make a positive impact on the world. One of these initiatives is transportation. We have a mass transit system on campus, to get our tens of thousands of students from the dorms to the classes, and between classes. It's great, it's convenient, it's heavily used and it actually helps with safety (so you don't have to walk home in the dark).

This week, they rolled out a bicycle program to compliment the bus system. We'll call this initiative DerpBikes. It models the bicycle programs of other universities. They throw together a few hundred ugly bikes, assemble bike racks across campus, and paint bike lanes on the roads. You go to a bike rack, get the bike, ride to where you need to go, and drop the bike off at the bike rack. Simple, efficient, mostly safe, and excellent on the environment.

Right? Well, yes, but the University of Derp found a way to fuck it up.

You see, the fatal flaw with our program is that the other campuses have things called "security measures." Fascinating idea, huh? You swipe your student ID card, it releases the bike, and if you don't return it to a rack, they charge you. They put little tracking chips in the bikes to make sure if you ride to the strip club downtown you'll get charged for the bike. They do all these things to prevent theft, damage and other stupid stuff college students can figure out.

What does University of Derp do? Write "University of Derp" on the bikes, and put them in the racks. End of story. Ohhhh yeah, that turned out well.

In just six days, most of the bikes are broken or parted out. Half of them are missing -- some stored in dorms to ensure they get a bike and nobody else can take it, some have been returned to the campus by City Police after being found miles away downtown (where they shouldn't be), and the rest are just plain missing. The ones that are left over are pieces of crap. It's a miracle if you can find one, and as you're riding you have to hope that A) the handlebars don't flip down and B) the brakes don't give out as they have been doing (both of which happened to me today, but I digress...).

Sweet, huh? So in six days, our green initiative turned into a theft-'n'-break-a-thon. The moral of this story is that if you're going to do something to help the environment, don't do it on the honor system. Either that, or a bunch of dumbass thieves and careless jerks thwarted university administration's plans to put us under UN control.

Damn kids. Dagnabit, get off my lawn.

350 337 Dell, if you're still up, I'm planning to shift over to New England coverage tomorrow. I'm emphasizing NYC and the coastal areas because the primary cause of fatalities in hurricanes is flooding. You're not going to see much out of this other than a lot of rain and probably tropical storm force winds, but I haven't forgotten about you.

Posted by: tmi3rd at August 28, 2011 01:11 AM (WRtsc)

The outer rain bands have just arrived here in Northern Vermont...about 30 miles South of the Canadian border.  We're looking at 4-7 inches of rain right quick, on top of saturated ground and that means severe flooding.  Many trees are coming down.  Power will be out for God knows how long (a week isn't unusual) and you don't think we're going to see much out of this?

For Northern New England this is going to be just like a major winter nor'easter without the snow.

366 Dell, what do you want me to say? I've spent a total of a week up in Vermont, and I don't know much about how the local utilities go about restoring service up there. Pursuant to how much rain you're going to see- okay, you could easily see a half a foot of rain, sure. That's fairly typical in any landfalling tropical system inland, but what information can I give you that you don't already have? I'd like to be of help, but you're currently under a flash flood watch and a high wind warning. That's the extent of what I can tell you- my training in emergency management is coastal in nature. Tell me what you need and I'll get it for you, but so far, I don't know what that is.

374 NavyJoe, figure she'll see some of the rougher stuff where she is. On the northeast side of the storm, she's going to see southerly and easterly winds- blowing more water ashore- and usually, that's where you see tornadoes get going. Because the system is so big, it's going to take a while to spin down. As Dell mentioned above, 50-60 mph winds for a few hours is probably a good bet. Half a foot plus of rain would be my guess, but it's just that- a guess.

Mind you, it ain't easy to get a 9x19 to 1350, or safe in most guns, but that's not the point, almost *any* handgun round is TRIVIAL compared to rifle and shotgun loads... and placement is WAY more important than caliber. 398 i meant as in illegal in cali. they dont like blades over 4 " either. HMMM we will see. Must discuss privately. California is difficult in terms of defense. They dont like non-victim citizens. Posted by: Gushka goes blue at August 28, 2011 01:48 AM (QNeKQ) California's a mixed bag. We have a Castle Law and most counties are okee-dokey with self-defense (but sometimes you get a crazy-ass officer). You can carry a fixed knife a lot of places but not concealed. There are a lot of funky rules about folders but length is not one of them, the law don't care if it's more than 4" long as long as it's not a switchblade (or flick-knife, sort of, but that gets technical).

399 Cholos are like Southerners with that vendetta mentality; they oughtta just let 'em have at it, and keep 'em off everyone else's backs.

Will look for Anchos, then; I am on a mission to eat as much Mexican food as I possibly can before we leave California for good next year.

Thanks for all your advice on self defense and such....think I will call it a night.

Night all.

400 almost *any* handgun round is TRIVIAL compared to rifle and shotgun loads... and placement is WAY more important than caliber.

All the discussion on the subject is relative anyway, and most of it is bullshit.

Posted by: Merovign, Dark Lord of the Sith at August 28, 2011 01:55 AM (bxiXv)

Fact. I heard it said once that a pistol is only good for helping you get back to your rifle. Speaking of rifles, I got a replacement for the rear barrel band on my Mosin and some stripper clips for it. I also got a front sight blade for the Arisaka that I hope will fit it (you would be amazed how hard it is to find parts for a T30) that I'm going to drill and tap to put a piece of threaded rod in so that I can adjust it for elevation.

Posted by: GGE, Back In The Horde! at August 27, 2011 10:02 PM (sILPb)

401 You can actually have "assisted-opening" knives as long as they meet certain criteria, or switchblades less than 2" (huh?) in blade length. *Nobody* understands the 2" limit on switchblades. But I have a 3.5" assisted opener from Kershaw, it's actually specifically mentioned in the law as an example of what's permitted.

402 Well, folks, off to bed with me. Next update tomorrow morning after I get back from Mass. Planning to shift coverage to inland stuff... as a parting thought, the largest percentage of fatalities comes from inland flooding. I anticipate it'll be a midrangey tropical storm a few hours after landfall in NY. Take a glance at this and it should give you a feel for things. Western side of the storm is the weaker one. http://tinyurl.com/3zd78e4

413 Last I heard 2 dead and 1 missing in NC due to Irene: one was hit by a tree branch and a little girl was killed in a car wreck brought on by the signal lights being out (these f'n idiots think if there is no light they have the right-of-way...both ways). The missing guy either jumped or fell into a river, they haven't found him one way or the other so they don't know if he's dead or missing.  There was also a guy that had a heart attack while he was nailing up some plywood and another who ran off the road and hit a tree, but they don't know if those two can be attributed to the storm or not.
Other than that, down power lines and flooding are the worst things we have between the I-95 corridor and the coast. Here in Raleigh we got lots of needed rain and a bit of un-needed wind, the power went out a couple of times but the longest it was out was about an hour or so, the rest were just blinks.
Thoughts and prayers to you NE moron(ette)s who are in the storm's path. If you don't need to be out and about don't be.  (With that being said, I went to a friends house to help him on his car all day during the hurricane.)

420 Since I'm not too sharp on this gun and knife stuff, what is a 3.5" assisted opener? Posted by: Ronster at August 28, 2011 02:15 AM (4fcWw) Well, from context, one could *guess* that it was a knife. And one would be correct. 3.5" - blade length assisted opener - a mechanism that helps the blade open with minimum pressure, but provides enough resistance that the knife will not open by action of a release, button or switch. It's not a switchblade, but after you open it about 1/4 the way open, it does the rest by spring action.

Yeah it is.  It really comes across to me that Geller is reacting to Perry the same way that Charles Johnson reacted to her.  And ace has sort of called her on that.  The post above mentions how the guy (spencer) essentially vouched for the Aga Kahn as being fairly moderate but apparently now is no good, and how basically every politician has had associations with Norquist just like Perry has.

It pretty much devolves into a lot of assumption-restating after that. If you read all the posts on both sides there is actually enough information to sort out what everyone is claiming, but it's not worth it unless you really need to catch up on your aggro quota.

My Arisaka is a non-numbes matching Type 30, hook safety and all. I knew nothing about collecting military hardware when I got this one, it was just a good deal so I bought it. Purists shudder whenever I talk about modifying the sights to make them accurate ("You'll destroy the collector's value!" "What's it worth?" "The numbers don' t match so it's only good for parts." "Well, I want to modify the front sight to make it so I can sight the damn thing in then." "You'll destroy the collector's value!" {facepalm}).
That's the good thing about the Mosin, it's a relatively common 91/30 infantry rifle made in 1943, there were a butt-load of them made so no one cares if you modify them...which this one is dead accurate so needs no modifications.

Russian collectors (as in collectors of Russian militaria) don't seem to give as much of a damn because, let's be honest, a lot of the stuff was okie-engineered anyway.
