— Gabriel Malor No DOOM thread today, folks; Monty should be back tomorrow. I can't do economic DOOM, but I can give you a DOOM-like link roundup of terrorism, crime, civil rights, Congress, Admin, and other news stories making the rounds this morning. These are taken from the news tweets I post almost every weekday morning at my twitter feed, @gabrielmalor, between 9 and 11AM.
In terrorism news, the showdown in the Senate over the handling of terrorism detainees starts today.
The London 2012 Olympics security forces prepare for a dirty bomb mass casualty event. Also, some Brits are fretting that the Olympics will boost illegal immigration in the UK.
A NY Post op-ed laments that the now-public NYPD/FBI spat is undermining confidence in gov't.
In crime news, there is ample evidence that the Treasury Dept blacklist of drug traffickers is not effective.
The White House shooter Ortega-Hernandez is in court today for a preliminary hearing. The judge had previously ordered a mental competency exam. He has not pleaded yet.
The FBI is looking into that Illinois lobbyist who got a fully-funded teacher pension for being a substitute teacher for a single day, plus scholarships for his kids.
Syracuse fires assistant basketball coach Bernie Fine after third accuser comes forward. That got significant press coverage this morning, though ABC News was the only broadcast net to cover it last night. The other brodcast networks are likely boycotting the story because ABC's partner network ESPN broke the story.
In civil rights news, a Virginia school's fight to keep its Ten Commandments display goes to court today.
In Admin news, by Wednesday, Obama will have made 56 visits to battleground states this year. That tops Bush's 49 in 2003.
In other news, the US Hispanic birth rate has fallen 11% since 2007. From 97.4 births per 1,000 women ages 15 to 44 to 80.3 last year.
If Mississippi lawmakers fail to propose redistricting by December 4, courts will draw the new districts for the sixth consecutive decade.
Post-Fukushima, developing nations emerge as main market for power-generating nuclear reactors.
Okay, that's all I've got so far today. If you like the news tweetage, you can find it on most weekdays at @gabrielmalor.

Well, then something good is coming from it.
We need less confidence in our government, not more.

Well, this is the UK. The IRA may be laying low, but they're not completely gone, and they're not at all forgotten. So, yes, "Islamic Terror" is probably the single most likely culprit, but they use different tactics than the IRA and other European terrorist groups.
Just because Islam primarily uses terror doesn't mean they've completely cornered that market, after all.
So it doesn't surprise me that they're officially saying "generic terrorist." "Generic Terrorist" is a much wider possibility, and therefore gets a broader set of responses. If they really focused on Islam, they'd be (potentially, at least) leaving open holes where other real threats might come through.
The IRA (mostly) laid down their guns because they realized that the US, under Bush, really would help England crack down on them if they didn't start behaving themselves. Under Obama, I'm sure they have no such fear.

The decline in birthrate is actually larger than 11%. From the article:
Hispanic birthrates tumbled 17.6% in three years -- from 97.4 births per 1,000 women ages 15 to 44 to 80.3 last year, according to preliminary 2010 data released this month by the National Center for Health Statistics.
Non-Hispanic whites still deliver most U.S. births. Their birthrates fell, too, but at a much slower pace -- down 3.7% to 58.7 per 1,000 women in 2010.

Not been paying attention this weekend. But reading about Colin Powel's butt sucking comments concerning "compromise" has made me ill. Does anyone remember who was the Division Investigating Officer at My Lai and who did a complete mia culpa to the WAPO just before Desert Storm? Yep, it was the oily little Colin. A complete douchebag. BTW, in regards to My Lai, no mention was made in his original report concerning the Assistant Division Commander flying directly over the sceen during while the massacre was committed. Colin has been a butt suck all his life. He made a career out of it.

Not sure any "Republican Army" is safe when Osama Obama, that stuttering clusterfuck of a miserable failure, is around.
The Irish Jihad Army has a better chance of getting Osama Obama's support, if you ask me.

True, the IRA is deep in the shadows, but, playing the odds, I'll go with muslim terrorists. What ticks me off is the "we dare not speaks its' name" practice when it comes to the cause of the billions of dollars spent on security in airports, ports, public venues, etc, all due to islam.

And I generally agree with you. Just not in this particular case, since the UK really does have other legitimate threats as well.
I really wish we would start saying it: a name which you refuse to speak eventually begins to carry power. If we would identify Islamic Terror by it's name (also by it's creed: Islamic Fundamentalism) I think we'd be safer without spending an extra penny.

If by "the norm," you mean every (or most) institutions will have one or more child molesters, you're probably right. Most institutions of learning (higher or otherwise) have been preaching moral relativism for longer than I've been alive- it's only natural that they would, therefore, attract more than their share of social deviants of all stripes.

My understanding is that, at the time, it couldn't be corroborated. "Assistant Coach" is not exactly "public figure" and the possible defamation lawsuit was probably enough to keep them quiet until they had more- in this case, in the form of an actual investigation and some real evidence (if thin, when they first ran the story).
And is Fine a black guy? Jason Whitlock is spinning for him like a jet turbine.

See my post @44. If I understand correctly, they received the tape, but couldn't corroborate it at the time. They probably tried to track it down, failed to, and then shelved it.
From their standpoint, if they run it and it's fake (remember: their claim is that they couldn't corroborate its authenticity), they can get sued for defamation. Yes, "believed truth" is the sovereign defense, but as a news organization, they would be held to a higher standard of due diligence and as a non-public figure, Mr. Fine would have been able to sue fairly easily (if it was fake, whatever). Even if they won, it would cost them a small fortune in legal costs.
So, when they couldn't corroborate, their best move was not to go public with it. And, as a news organization, they weren't going to send it to the police, because they'd sooner rip off their own arms than "burn a source."

I'll inject a couple items of DOOM to the equation:
- The OECD declared the Euro zone crisis as the biggest threat to the world economy.
- From James Pethokoukis - despite the economy being worse than teh SCOAMF predicted, he still wants to raise taxes.
- Despite new home sales increasing slightly in October, median new home prices fell, the "improvement" means we're at less than half the amount a "healthy" market would see, and we're at a record (since 1963) low in new home inventory. Oh, and existing home sales aren't much better.

On Tuesday, the Bureau of Economic Analysis cut their estimate of growth in the third quarter ending September from 2.5% to 2%. Then on Wednesday, the Federal Reserve rocked financial markets by forcing America’s 31 largest U.S. banks to “stress test” balance sheets to determine their capability to withstand an 8% drop in the economy; which would cause home prices to plunge by 21%, and unemployment rate to jump to 13%.

However, here's another case that just popped up:
A University of Utah professor has been arrested for allegedly viewing child pornography while flying to Boston Saturday.
Grant Smith, a professor of materials science and engineering, was arrested at Logan International Airport. Massachusetts State Police took him into custody, and he is currently being held on $15,000 bail, according to Trooper Todd Nolan of the Massachusetts State Police.
Smith was sitting in first class and had his laptop open. A man sitting behind Smith saw "disturbing images" that appeared to be child pornography, Nolan said. The passenger notified the flight staff, who asked Smith to close his laptop. The passenger texted his son about what he saw, and the son then called the Massachusetts State Police to report the incident.
Troopers were waiting at the airport when the 4 p.m. flight landed. Both Smith and the witness willingly spoke to police, Nolan said. Smith allowed police to look at his laptop, and after troopers saw the images, they requested a full search warrant.
He was booked into jail on suspicion of possession of child pornography. He was scheduled to be arraigned Monday morning.
According to a statement from the University of Utah, Smith has been placed on administrative leave pending an criminal investigation.
"Professor Smith deserves a full and fair investigation into this issue," the statement said. "The University of Utah, however, has no tolerance for the viewing or possessing of child pornography by any of its employees, regardless of where it occurs."
If the allegations against Smith are discovered to be true, the university will "immediately seek Professor SmithÂ’s dismissal," the statement said.

See my post @44. If I understand correctly, they received the tape, but couldn't corroborate it at the time. They probably tried to track it down, failed to, and then shelved it.
---
Shouldn't they have turned it over to law enforcement then? I mean, presumably LE has access to resources that would have been more able to authenticate the tape and turning over the tape to LE, even if it wound up not being authentic, would not have been defamation. In fact, if it was/is a fake, it is evidence of a different type of criminal activity.
