Not The NHL Winter Classic Game Thread
— DrewM

For the last few years we've used the Winter Classic as a chance for hockey morons to enjoy a moment in the HQ sun.

Today would have been no different, except now the game has been postponed to 8pm tonight because it's 50 degrees and rainy in Pittsburgh right now. We'll do a thread then but for now, here's an open thread.

If you're at all interested in the game, you should check out the HBO 24/7 series leading up to today's game between the Capitals and Penguins. Both teams and the NHL gave HBO total access to anything the wanted. The result is like candy to hockey fans and great TV for anyone remotely interested in what it's like to be a professional athlete.

If you're not up for watching the full hour long episodes, check out these two 15 minute segment from episode 3 highlighting last weeks game between the two teams. Fortunately, it lived up to the hype and the coverage HBO provided from all angles is simply amazing.

Fair warning...players, coaches, and referees were mic'ed up and there are enough F-Bombs to make even the most lurid moron blush a bit.

See you back here tonight for the game thread. Seriously guys...LOTS of F-Bombs. Watch at your own risk.

You can see Episode 1 here and Episode 2 here. (content warning still in effect).

One other thing: Unlike football, in hockey scantily glad women aren't just decorative, they get put to work.

Ice Girls.jpg

Advantage: Hockey.

5 I need some Moron prayers for my mom.

Some of you know she's been fighting a brain tumor for a while now. We thought that the Avastin/CPT11 protocol she'd been on was finally going to turn the tide in her favor after several very encouraging images came back showing the malignant portion of the tumor was for all purposes gone.

She had some issues with the drug itself, but on the balance we had thought this was it, she'd made it through and was going to beat this.

Unfortunately the CAT she had yesterday showed another tumor, this one far more pervasive and completely malignant has appeared, and it's grown at a monstrous rate. Both of these are in non-operable areas of her brain. She's decided that she does not want to go through another round of chemo and the physical torture it put her through last time.

So she's going on Hospice until the end which according to her docs won't be more than a couple of months at the rate the new tumor is growing.

I've counted on you people here for my daily laughs and humor, and you people have been nothing but kind and comforting to me when I've lost others in my family. I would ask if you're the praying sort to send one her way.

Prayers being sent, James.  I'm sorry to hear about your mom's condition, but I've always been thankful to Hospice for the care and attention they've given to my family members in the past.  They truly provide a great service under the most difficult of situations.  God bless them, and God bless your family in this difficult time.

15 Too bad about the game.

A couple of hockey stories.

The first NHL game I attended was a Caps game.  My dad got tickets from someone and took my sister and me to the game (he had no sons).  I think we were pre-teens at the time.  The seats were directly behind the opposing team's penalty box.  Quite an introduction to hockey.

The only other NHL game I've attended was a Blackhawks game.  Mr Y-not and I went a couple of years after we were married.  The seats weren't nearly as good, but that game did have several majors and a massive injury that resulted in blood all over the ice and the stretcher being brought out.  Again, quite memorable.  They also had a tradition of a bimbette tottering out onto the ice on hooker heels to do something - I don't recall if it was dropping the puck or some thing during intermission.  Ever since then it has been my aspiration to be the bimbette.

26 5 I need some Moron prayers for my mom.

Some of you know she's been fighting a brain tumor for a while now.

James,

I am so sorry to hear about your mom.  My mother developed an inoperable brain tumor in the fall of 1991, following treatment for lung cancer.  It developed quickly and no treatments (aside from palliative radiation, which I would not recommend) were possible.  She was comatose for several months and passed away the week Clinton was inaugurated.

Hospices provide such an important service.  I hope yours is as good as the one we used.  I also hope you have the chance to spend as much quiet time with your mom as you wish.  In my case, I was living far from home, was broke, in a new job, and unable to spend as much time by her side as I wanted to.  That made her death very hard on me, compared to how it affected my dad and sister.

So be selfish and cherish every moment you have with your mom.

I'll pray that she has a miracle or, barring that, that her end is peaceful.

God bless.

28 I like hockey.  I wish it were televised regularly.  It's hard to become a fan if you can't follow a team and the NHL ticket is pretty expensive, as I recall.  Plus, the season is too long and the playoff system is a joke.  But, just on the merits of the play of the game, I like it better than baseball or basketball, that's for sure.

It's nothing like soccer.

Y-not, the thing at the Hawks intermission is that they put a shield in front of one of the goals with a hole cut in at ice level about twice the height and width of the puck and they have fans come out and try to make a shot from center ice. I think they have three fans try it; the first two are normal schlub-guy hockey fans who get booed mercilessly even if they make the shot. Then they bring out the hottest dressed-like-a-whore chick they could find in the stands, and surprisingly, she'll get cheered. At least until she whiffs.

I imagine the same is done at all the other stadiums.

We sat on some VIP level where we had a table for 4 at the blue line and our own little flat screen TV at the table where we could watch the TV broadcast along with the game on the ice. After seeing the game live, I developed an immediate appreciation for the game and became a fan. Next game I attended was CHI @ PHI in Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Finals this past year. Along with a few hundred other 'Hawks fans who made the trip, we got to watch the 'Hawks raise the Cup. Pretty sweet. And for Christmas, my bro got me a Sharpie Jersey. 87 Another annoying commercial: an anti-HIV commercial showing girl after girl baring her 8.5 month pregnant belly at the TV camera. Which reminds me of such a woman in a bikini I once saw at the beach. Ever since freaking Demi Moore posed like that, it's become de rigeur for the pregnant women to "let it all hang out." Oddly, I don't care to see it.

From the sidebar, re Japan's declining population:

Saturday's report showed 706,000 marriages registered last year — the fewest since 1954 and a sign that birth rates are unlikely to jump dramatically anytime soon.

Shame, shame on the AP for even suggesting that marriages and births are, even remotely, associated.     Raaaacists!!!!!111!!1!!1!

100 Another annoying commercial... Posted by: Some Truckdriver at January 01, 2011 06:36 PM Oh cool, are we sharing which commercials we find annoying? Lately, I am getting sick of the Geico commercials with that putz who ripped on the TEA Party. The one that annoys me the most is the 'wee-wee-wee all the way home' one. It's like nails on the chalkboard that 'wee-wee-weeing' crap. Not to mention, I thought after people bitched about his ridiculous statements about the TEA Party Patriots, Geico said they were going to fire that guy? Yet I still see his annoying mug all over their commercials to this day.

119 New Years day has been a nonstop cavalcade of cooking food. Pulled pork, prime rib, and herbed chicken all aple and oak smoked on my new Christmas present.

Everything comes off the smoker in about an hour.

Gonna wash it all down with a couple Sam Adams.

Life is good.

120 My bad, it's the Time MotY I'm thinking of.  Josef Stalin, check (twice).  Wallis Simpson?  Srsly, Time????  Ayatolla Khumeini (1979, good choice).

I thought Arafat got it once, but I don't see it on the list.  Maybe that was Newsweak.

What a buncha fuckin' clowns.

125 Unlike the lame ass media, Iowahawk picks actual real peeps for his MOY and WOY awards:

Monkey Man Givan, meth manufacturing monkey lover

and the ever so popular high flying Yasmine Villasana who took a car to new heights making even the Gen Lee blush with envy..

128 I think they have three fans try it; the first two are normal schlub-guy hockey wholesale dress fans who get booed mercilessly even if they make the shot. Then they bring out the hottest dressed-like-a-whore chick they could find in the stands, and surprisingly, wholesale products she'll get cheered. At least until she whiffs.
