— Ace A total, complete ban on cutesy suggestions that people should be killed. I've had this ban in effect forever but apparently some dumbasses just don't get it.
Any Secret Service agents monitoring this blog should check out this solid citizen, for example.
I'm serious, assholes. Take your assassination fantasies elsewhere.
You want to use my platform for your sick fantasies? Well, if you're going to make problems for me, I guess I'll just have to make problems for you.
Did that work out the way you thought, "Scenario Questioner"?
The old system of deleting these comments wasn't having the effect I wanted.
Now I'm going the other way.
You want to make a public death threat? Then be prepared to make a very public death threat.
Ready to stand behind your words, Chief? Ready to deal with some problems stemming from your comments?
Hope you are.

You're call on bringing the hammer down hard, Ace, and I respect that. I agree what the guy said is stupid and way over the line, and if by IP address you know he's a repeat offending sock, by all means ban. I also respectfully point out the quote at the header...which is a great quote. It's a pretty bad-ass, threating quote, though. Just not specifically directed at a specific person who's specific throat is tempting to slit.

Hey Ace ... I can tell you this - what that guy posted isn't going to get him in any kind of trouble other than maybe a knock at the door from Secret Service ... and I highly doubt even that.
Problem is - SS, even with their inflated budget, isn't prepared to handle all these random internet meanderings - and especially when they're cleverly posed in the form of a question. They have more significant leads to track down.
I mean - the guy who posted that is obviously bankrupt of mental faculties. It takes a special kind of mind to give up reasoned debate and make an insinuation of the type he made here.
But ... being stupid, and bankrupt of ideas and morality really isn't against the law in most cases.

According to their contact information, the Secret Service prefers to be contacted at their nearest field office.
While you may want to avoid posting the commenter's IP address, a simple tracert and/or IP geolocation service (below) could give you a location (close enough to find a good field office to contact) that you could post for the morons to take over.
That is, assuming that the commenter did not use some sort of anonymizing platform like TOR. But then that would give you even more concern about the commenter's intentions. And it would give the SS at least some place to start.
Should not be much more effort than deleting/banning.

No kidding. I, for one, am sick of these whiney asswads who, the instant Ace makes any rule, immediate start bitching about it. When it comes to this blog, Ace is the blog-god. If he says it, it's final. He doesn't owe anyone any reason for doing what he does.
That said, I'm glad he usually gives a reason. Otherwise he'd start resembling some lizard blog whose name ought never be mentioned ever again. But Ace could go full-retard like that and it would be well within his rights.

I mentioned the bad-ass header, but don't in any way think you should take it down. As I said, I like it. I remember it being the first thing I saw the very first time I visited AoS, and thinking "my kinda place". Nor should you lose the bad-ass logo here or on Twitter. Even the name "Ace of Spades", is bad-ass. It's why many of us like the place. Just speaking for myself, but AoS is a place that seems a bit smarmy and dark...an internet age pub where intellectuals of a certain stripe gather to converse about things ranging from religion and politics to lesbians and hobo hunting.
Problem is, with the somewhat seedy, bad-ass decor and an open comment section in a blog being what it is, some idiots will always feel free to anonymously (in their own mind) cross the line. It's your pub...post the rules clearly and throw em out when they won't mind them. The quote is obviously metaphorical...don't feel you have to cater to the stupid.

Well, I was just going off on a tangent; I was agreeing with ace's no-tolerance policy.
As for the government going after harmless idiots for posting threats on the internet, yes it does need to be done, to some extent. Because if you give an inch on this sort of thing, it will justify actual incitation to political violence. I'm not so much worried about somebody as well protected as the president, but I'd certainly worry about, say, lawmakers in Wisconsin. I can easily imagine leftist websites inciting people to the point that somebody gets hurt.
Posted by: sandy burger at July 15, 2011 11:38 AM (XyoGP)
I believe this guy made quite a few posts that no one took seriously.
Harris and Kleibold (sp ?) kept journals and videos, but it was 1999 so there was no facebook and not as many opportunities to post freely on the internet as a whole or I bet they would have been leaving crazy posts on websites too.
I know I remember a few other incidents recently where prior t an attack of full on crazy, people had been posting on blogs etc. and no one took them seriously.
Take that into consideration and then look at assassination attempts over the past 40 years. They have uniformly been psychotics. Given that I am sure that when the Secret Service comes across a threatening post they take it seriously and Ace has every right to be concerned about the impact on his blog.
Posted by: chad at July 15, 2011 11:40 AM (WNcvq)
It's not brain surgery; just don't post death threats or anything racist (including, especially, ebonics) and you should be fine.
But in general, here are my rules of thumb for joining a forum or group: post from day one as if you've been posting forever. Don't bother introducing yourself: nobody cares. Similarly, if you decide to leave, don't explain yourself, just go: nobody cares.

Oh, and stay the hell away from Ace's strawberries the lot of ya! And by "strawberries" I mean cherries you morons. Everyone knows that!
I love Ace as much as the next guy but I am afraid he is starting to lose it a little. In fact I love Ace enough to tell him I think he is acting irrationally and I am more than a little worried about his state of mind.
He can and will do as he wishes with his blog and I am greatly appreciative of all of his efforts. I have and will faithfully follow all of the rules but when they make absolutely no sense I can't help but feel like I am walking on eggshells all of the time. If bears are apes and "what if's" are threats then no one is safe to speak here and there is no way to predict what will get you into trouble next.
It hurts Ace's credibility to reason in such a weak manner and to draw so much attention to things better handled by contacting, censoring or banning the offending party. He might find the guy who made the post worded it poorly and save himself a ton of trouble and embarrassment. Not to mention calling something a threat which clearly was not opens Ace up to being sued for defamation. Especially if he takes the advice of some here and publishes the guy's ip or if he really does call the SS etc... If it were me I would retract the claim that a death threat was made immediately but maybe Ace has some past history here with this person that makes him comfortable making this charge outside the comment he pointed to which does not support the accusation.
I also get the feeling that we are not wanted. Ace has made it clear that he considers the comment section a money loser for him and feels he has to have teams of people constantly scour the comments to keep us in line. He has taken to excoriating us as a whole sometimes when he is mad instead of just handling whoever made the problem for him off stage. So I think psychologically there is something going on there where the commentariat is just not valued as much by him as it is by the people who visit here.
As a small business owner all I can say is --- make a decision Ace. If you keep the comments then don't bitch about your customers to your customers. Don't complain about the comment section. Make people feel welcome and invited and handle the problems in a calm, non-ranting fashion. Or just close the comments or require registration. But don't under any circumstances make your clientele feel like I feel now. Oh, and don't try to argue with the customers that purple is blue instead of red. Just tell them not to post anything about the president dying or being missing from office because it makes you uncomfortable. That is understandable and supportable. Calling what is quite arguably a what-if scenario a death threat only makes it look like you are being vindictive over a difference of opinion and are willing to try to ruin some poor schmuck to prove yourself right.
And keep in mind that the distinctions you are making do not come naturally to everyone or even most people so every time you pick up a new commenter you will have some of this behavior you don't like while they are educated as to the rules of the establishment. The way you classify things is not intuitive at all so the acclimatization period will be extended a little. Nobody reads lists of rules so your regular commenters can help with that and keep you workload down some. I will be glad to do so myself.
I am sure I am in the minority but I am also sure that the people who feel like I do are less likely to speak up.

This fool reminds me of a conversation on LGF during the build-up tot he Iraq invasion. He thought it would be real cool and impressive to bomb the massive dam and kill outright hundreds of thousands of Iraqi civilians.
He actually needed to have it explained to him that massive civilian death was not a useful objective and was to be avoided whenever possible. It was a revelation to him that our enemy was a very tiny portion of the populace who were the cause of our ire, as is usually the case in war.
To his credit, he admitted he was taken with the shock and awe concept and hadn't considered the consequences.

I, like most enjoy the blogging here and post comments as I see fit.
The comment in question (on this post) did not constitute a threat. Ace's response was no different than Shirley Jackson Lees race card. revival session. It had no bearing on the actual content of the comment.
I was viscarally attacked here the other evening for a mild criticism of late attention to an election post and some snark against a blogger who attacked a commentor for postulating a question on the success of the welfare state.
I would suggest that most of those who attacked me had no ideadwhat my comment was. Especially, Ace.

You are utterly, completely wrong. We never engaged in indiscriminate murder for its own sake as a strategy during WWIII or any other conflict. It doesn't take a military genius to understand that this has little value and can even backfire beyond the horrible PR consequences. If you inadvertantly eliminated the wrong civilians, that is, people above and below certain ages, you can be relieving your opponent of a resource drain and make them better enabled to support their fighters.
We targeted stuff that had civilians nearby and inevitable casualties. This is where the phrase collateral damage comes from.
If our goal was to simply annihilate the enemy wholesale, from infants to senior citizens, we would simply have deployed poison gas. This was the best means to achieve such a goal at the time, and we had ample stocks. The Germans did too but lacked the means to strike at the continental US. There was an understanding as far as the battlefield went that nobody wanted to be first to deploy gas. There were plenty of WWI veterans who knew how horrible that would be. (Including Hitler himself.) It says a lot about how poison gas was regarded that it went unused.
We could quite easily have depopulated large swaths of Germany, and created an escalation nobody wanted. The US may have been safe but kiss the UK goodbye.
Today we'd use neutron bombs if outright elimination of populations was intended. It remains a hypothetical.
And now that we're talking nuclear, no, the atom bombings of Japan were not wholesale slaughter for its own sake. Again, poison gas would have been far more cost effective, not to mention actually doable as we didn't have an A-bomb stockpile to keep applying until the island were uninhabitable.
This was a hostage drama. It was balancing an expected 500,000 US and Allied casualties to conquer the islands decisively the hard way vs. a substantially lesser number of Japanese citizens to convince the Japanese leadership there were worse things than defeat. And this is one of those cases where declaring, "They started it," carries validity. The victory had to be total since, again, those with decent memories of the previous war didn't want to have to do this again in a couple decades with better and deadlier technology on all sides.

Okay, let's look at the post.
14 So how would an unfortunate, sudden loss of the president affect our credit rating? The commentor is referring to Obama's effect on the debt crisis. He refers to his absense/ loss and what effect that would have on the situation. While one might surmise that the commentor wishes Obama was not president during such troubling fiscal negotiations. He has not threatened the President. (how many of you, are happy that he is the one presiding over these troubling times.) The commentor has not imagined his demise as a golf ball in the back of the head, getting beaten to death by Michelle with the last corn dog in the frezer, or being tried and hung by sidng with the Vichy Government ( which can be discussed later.). He has not. He merely asks, "what if?" I believe he thought he was being funny. which, a year ago would have been accepted here. (AoSHQ). There is no threat. I would also contend that id John Mcain, and I gag at that, or Clinton (still gaging) were president we would not be in this situation. So in effect, if I do not accuse the poster of threatening the president, and I do not. Then, I would have to say that basically, I agree with him. If you you don't agree with me, then we can/will argue this point again in 2013. Of coruse I will be in a reeducation camp, but of course if you have any balls, you'll be there also.

I kind of enjoying being able to post without someone imagining, what I am imagining, I am saying.
Liberating. Oh yea, and WINNING.

Nonsense piled on top of more nonsense.

No, it is not murder to kill the enemy. But, indiscriminate killing of the enemy has been a strategy of the USA. For reference, check out the firebombing of Dresden. Or, your own words. Nuclear weapons are indiscriminate. They do not just kill the soldiers, leaving the children, the elderly and other non-combatants unharmed. Dropping nuclear bombs on Japan was part of a strategy to convince the leadership of Japan that we would inflict such massive damage on their population and infrastructure that it made no sense to continue to fight.

And, it worked. Fighting a "humane" war just drags it out and usually ends up resulting in a higher level of carnage. The way that wars are won is convincing the enemy that it is too painful to continue to fight. A vicious, no-holds barred conflict results in a shorter war that lets all sides get to the resolution. And, that is what we should want in any war we are in.

“It is the primary right of men to die and kill for the land they live in, and to punish with exceptional severity all members of their own race who have warmed their hands at the invader’s hearth.”

I don't like leftists in public office, but the way to deal with them is to speak up and tell the truth about the bankruptcy of their ideas, not by making idiotic death threats against them. Such antics only show weakness and the lack of good ideas with which to fight them.
I also think that many, if not most, of the retards making such threats here and on other sites for normal people are mobys.

That was perfect. You ably capture the confusion regarding whats 'over the line' here. As an approximately 10 time (infrequent) commenter who got banned on the 10th for something similar, all I can say is THANK YOU for perfectly expressing the dismay I felt at both the banning, and Aces subsequent "fuck you" email to me. (no really. Thats all the email said: "Fuck you.") One questionable offense, no warning, no consideration, no defense. It's a jarring feeling to be sure and I was completely blind-sided by it myself. You go from being a fan of the work to standing 'guilty' of something - so far beyond anything you intended - before its author, in the space of a second. Now I just read, because face it - sometimes Ace is funny. Admittedly though, a bit less so knowing that this bastion of 'liberty' is in reality a self-righteous judgmental crank who believes the FIRST solution is to form his own Stasi styled neighborhood informant pogrom. To would be bloggers, let me suggest that there ARE better ways of handling these matters than completely alienating your readers as your primary go-to solution. If they really are psychotic, you'll figure it out pretty quickly. Once you do, banning and reporting them are appropriate remedies.

Better ways? How about as a common carrier (in the law) ignoring them?
Last I checked "editing" posts is #1 way to open self to liability. Ace should check into the law, and liability precedence if thats what he's worried about. I like reading the headlines on the site on a daily basis, and have for years. And will not stop. Banned or not, because we all know the ban is a joke. ACE - do what you do best and fuck them all. Don't waste time on opinions you don't agree with because it takes less time to un-ban youself than it does to get banned.

While that's true, the official act of IP bannage puts the stamp of validity to the host's disinvitation to someone's participation. I mean really, what kind of a relationally retarded fuckstick keeps coming back to a social gathering where the host and other participants have made clear that he isn't wanted.

I spent too much of my career in other people's civil wars to want that shit here. If the other side starts it? Great. Fine. But no Fort Sumters and no manufacturing martyrs for the other side.

LOL. Stay classy, Ace.
Abiss: It's just a stupid blog. You can live without it as millions of people do.
