Corzine secretly used investor's funds to pay for the MF Global's own investments.

Here's the kicker: Corzine (MF) made really really shitty investments in Europe -- couldn't have done worse if he tried.

From The Belmont Club, this is how it happened. And it was all totally legal:

Christopher Elias at Thomson Reuters describes how MF Global used its client’s money to make their own bets. They took assets which were restricted in one jurisdiction and by legal hocus-pocus transferred it to London — another jurisdiction where no such encumbrances applied. Thus at a stroke the monies were theirs to handle.

MF GlobalÂ’s bankruptcy revelations concerning missing client money suggest that funds were not inadvertently misplaced or gobbled up in MFÂ’s dying hours, but were instead appropriated as part of a mass Wall St manipulation of brokerage rules that allowed for the wholesale acquisition and sale of client funds through re-hypothecation. A loophole appears to have allowed MF Global, and many others, to use its own clientsÂ’ funds to finance an enormous $6.2 billion Eurozone repo bet.

There was no act of desperation. It was how business was done. It was how perhaps $1.2 billion was lost.

Re-hypothecation occurs when a bank or broker re-uses collateral posted by clients, such as hedge funds, to back the brokerÂ’s own trades and borrowings. Â… But in the UK, there is absolutely no statutory limit on the amount that can be re-hypothecated. In fact, brokers are free to re-hypothecate all and even more than the assets deposited by clients. Instead it is up to clients to negotiate a limit or prohibition on re-hypothecation. On the above example a UK broker could, and frequently would, re-hypothecate 100% of the pledged securities ($500).

Ordinarily, that would be called "fraud", no matter what regulators might have to say about it.  It would be pretty easy to get a jury to convict, too.  Almost any jury.

43 It would be nice if someone would point out that Corzine preferred to steal customer funds (and it was stealing, as he knew they weren't coming back, especially at the end - i.e. they were no longer "collateral" of any sort, but plain, old payments) than just ponying up some of his own little fortune to pay for his own idiotic bet.  That's what someone with even a smidgeon of integrity (half an iota) would do.

Integrity is passe, these days.

Hell, they've even been fairly successful at establishing that 'being dumb is cool'....look at all the movies out there that have that theme. So, we live in an upside-down world right now, where being smart is 'evil', doing the right thing is 'dumb' and 'being dumb is cool'.

And yet I still have hope that it is not too late for our beloved country to recover from all the sabotage from within.

Dude, that would rock.  Seriously.  I'm sure they mean it as something like, "Death to America!"  But I take it as, "America will FUCK YOUR SHIT UP, you illiterate heathens.  Every one of our fifty states -- even g-ddamn Rhode Island!  I can spit across Rhode Island! -- is better than your shithole country. And don't you forget it, mothergoatfuckers!"

Back in the day, I think we would gladly have polished their Persian flesh down to reveal shiny white bone, too.  That's why it's so very unfortunate we have the current poncey asswipe douchebag in the Oval Office.

90 O/T - Sorry if someone mentioned this, but there's some good news out there:

Crystal Mangum, the former stripper who falsely accused members of the Duke University lacrosse team of sexually assaulting her in 2006, is competent to stand trial on murder charges in the death of her boyfriend, a Durham judge ruled Wednesday.

The ruling is the latest troubling news for Mangum, 33, in the wake of her role at the center the Duke lacrosse scandal.

Mangum, an African American, accused three white lacrosse players at the prestigious private university of raping her at a house party.

It would be an interesting experiment, though, don't you think?  The imams and all their obedient little followers are convinced that seeing even a HINT of a woman's skin is enough to inflame a man's passion and get him to abandon his pure Islamic lifestyle.  Hence the burqa, because a woman's body is a temple of sin.

But would that theory hold water if a group of Muslim men -- particularly devout extremists -- were faced with a naked Helen Thomas?  Would they feel an intense desire to give in to their carnal passions, or would they actually demonstrate some sanity and run like hell?

Before anyone answers, remember: these people enjoy regular sex with goats, donkeys, and camels.

I assume that the Russians, the Chinese, and really, anyone with a decent spy program already knows how it works.  The problem for them is that it's not easy to replicate.

The problem for us now is that, with a complete working model, they can try all kinds of specific techniques to detect it.

So, the Iranians will fuck us good by selling the drone to the Russians.  It will be the Phoenix missile shit all over again.  We did do a redesign on the Phoenix, but it's wasn't as effective as the original.
