Now Missouri and Midwest Pummeled By Tornados
— Ace

Lot of deadly weather lately.

The images today are shocking after a mile-wide tornado ripped a six-mile path through the once-bustling town of Joplin, Mo., leaving 90 dead and many more missing.

According to meteorologists, it's the deadliest single tornado to strike the country in 60 years. Red Cross representatives say that 75% of the town is gone (via Daily Mail).

From from Oklahoma to Wisconsin, the Joplin twister was one of 68 reported tornadoes across seven Midwest states over the weekend, according to the National Weather Service's Storm Prediction Center.

Awful. Meanwhile, they're rebuilding in Alabama after last month's killer twisters. And offering prayers for the Midwesterners just stricken.

Willie Walker is still trying to put a new roof on his house because of the wave of tornadoes that killed more than 230 people across Alabama last month, but he took time Monday to do what he could for victims of twisters that killed scores in the Midwest.

“We’re praying for those people,” said Walker, a retired Marine, as workers stripped the remaining tar paper off his roof before a new layer went on. “We know what they’re going through because we’ve been there already.”

Meanwhile, via Jezebel, a cute little happy accident during an interview with one of the survivors of the Alabama storms.

2 Your vid's broken, but if it's the lady and her cat, I've seen it.  Heartwarming.

But prayers to those still dealing with the storms, and those who just got hit.  And as always, a cheer to those who run towards the disaster, rather than away...

6 Had a quick roll-in and stormed like a motherfucker for a while here in St. Louis.  Lots of big, big winds, but it wasn't tornadoey.  Calm now.

Or how hard it is to drive over that.

As Joplin is my home town, I have been in touch with folks back there all day. 75% of the town is not gone--about 30% suffered major damage.

Unfortunately, the twister didn't wipe out the part of town that could use some urban renewal.

Also, the hospital you see on TV is a small part of a large medical complex there. It was all pretty much wiped out, but I guess they have the TV crews set up to look directly at one part of the St. Johns complex. Most of it is behind and off to the sides.

My prayers for all involved ~  this would be devastating at any time but when the economy is upside down makes it even worse.

Is Toonces still committing money to the middle east????  I hope that he and his Mrs. enjoy his European campaign kick-off tour as we have this devastation here at home.  Of course, what good would he be anyway??

Are all morons and ettes accounted for who lived in the area?  Woke up to this horrible news this morning.  We have a few relatives there, but they are okay.  My friends son was driving to Tulsa and came into Joplin 10 minutes after the tornado ripped thru.  Said he saw semi's all over the highway.  I say he is one lucky lad right now.

20 I was just watching the local news here (owned by the Democrat Party of course) and the meteorologist said we were having all these tornadoes because April and May of this year were the "warmest on record".

Of course I don't have the averages for this May yet but April this year had highs 4°F lower than last year.

24 One of my friends lives in Joplin.  She went out this morning and took pictures.  Absolutely awful.  She was very lucky that she was a mile away from the strike zone.

I nearly had a heart attack this morning when I turned on the news.  They were mentioning Springfield which is where my sister, nephew, daughter, and granddaughter live.  They were in their homes when it hit so they are obviously physically okay, but my friend was crazy lucky.

We worry about earthquakes here (Newport Beach, CA) but having experienced tornadoes living in Texas for 20 years I can only imagine how frightening that whole ordeal was.

We've had really low temps down in TX so far.  I mean, we've barely hit 90 yet and it's almost June 1st.

Yes, they never pass up a chance to lie about this shit. What is truly sad was he just rattled it off the cuff like it was an "oh by the way" thing. Everyone watching that will believe him like it was smoking hot gospel strait from Revelations.

Yes, it has been getting consistently cooler every year for the past 3 years here. Today now was hot for May. It made it to 97.6°F at the peak.

Posted by: mama winger at May 23, 2011 02:25 PM (KDX07)

47 curious-all the sirens went off and yes the people had warning although I don't know exactly how much.  I've lived here 34 years and we know we live in tornado alley.  When there is severe weather the meteorologists are always right on top of it and give fair warning, but even with the modern technology these things can happen.  I think they catagorized this as an F4 but they may upgrade to an F5, that's what I am hearing.

Posted by: jewells45 at May 23, 2011 02:27 PM (Z71Vg)

48 The night before we moved into this house 3 years ago we had tornado warnings all night.  My husband and I were trying to pack, and had to spend most of the evening in the basement with a greyhound and a rabbit!!

49 Sorry. I'd love to help but we sent the last of the money we borrowed from China to Pokeestaan, and that put us over the debit limit.

Now if you bitter clingers would stop whining and let Boehner borrow a few trillion more, made we could send over some MREs or something. Otherwise, why don't you go back to your guns and bibles.

Now, leave me alone. I am on vacation an important job- creating, international relations tour and it's not like this waffle is going to eat itself.

Your welcome.

54 Tornado sirens went off this evening,  around 5:30,  and dogs and I went to the basement.  The English shepherd followed me,  but the chihuahua got scared and started running around the house,  so I had to go grab her and carry her upside down to the basement.  She was a bit bewildered,  having never been in the basement. (This is my daughter's dog.)

We stayed downstairs and did a load of laundry and listened to the radio.  The bad storm went south of us and the county seat is without power,  as well as several semis blown onto their sides on I-65.

Reporting from just south of Indianapolis, and very grateful we have a basement.
