37 Frankly, given the insane delight with which news agencies blow everything "noocler" out of proportion, I have trouble believing anything at this point. I note they are viewing all the burning fuel facilities as nothing more than cool photo ops, while they belch out tons of toxic chemicals that have no half life. But atomic stuff is, like, icky. Yeah, this may turn out to be bad, but I'm not betting that way at the moment. The earthquake was 8.9 at the epicenter, but significantly less at the nuc sites. They apparently had to open dump valves to release some steam due to pressure concerns. The steam itself would have been radioactive (due to activation of oxygen in water), and that alone may account for the 1000x radiation levels (normal radiation level would be relatively small, so 1000x isn;t necessarily a big deal).

However the key question is fuel integrity. If fuel breached, the worst actor will be radioactive I-131. There are also radioactive gases, but those are primarily noble gases (e.g., krypton) so they don't accumulate in your body (no chemical bonding). I-131 heads straight for the thyroid.

You know what else is emitting more radiation then expected?  The full body scanners at airports.  From U.S.A. today:

No, there are no Shinkansen (bullet trains) unaccounted for.

The Tohoku Shinkansen, the main bullet train line in that region, is completely inland. Sendai Station is many miles from the ocean (I know - I've been there about 20 times).

The missing trains are slow regional trains on the Senseki Line, which is indeed a coastal railway that operates northeast of Sendai.

103 The cores and primary cooling should be built on large concrete barges floating in pools. Secondary cooling (the ginormous towers) isn't as crucial providing you can shut the freaking thing down reliably. Which you can do so long as the core itself and the primary cooling is undamaged.

Being a floating structure means you ignore the actual quake itself. And preparing for rising water is much more simple. A wall of water is different, but things like the airport were seeing "swift moving rising water". 1ft, 2ft, 3ft, 4ft... not "Look, 10ft of water!"

This also eviscerates a large slice of the environmental impact/geoscientific lawsuits and studies required along the way.

Yeah that was released from Chernobyl.  It spread about 1000 miles and got into the water and soil as well.  Cases of thyroid cancer and other thyroid problems went through the roof.  And we may not have seen the end of it yet. It has a short half-life which means most of it decays within the body.  Nasty stuff.

Aren't nuclear reactors basically steam plants that put nuclear fuel rods in a medium that heats from their overly close proximity to each other.  Doesn't one simple remove the fuel rods and increase the distance between them to cool them?  I learned this from a Disney video.

How does a nuclear power plant have interupted power service since that is pretty much all they do is make electricity?

Heat in reactors must be removed by coolant.  Electric motor-driven pumps pump water/coolant to create flow which continuously removes waste heat.

Without electric power being available by "normal" means, (or by existing backup), the pumps are inoperable. 

If the backup generators have been damaged, the backup batteries only last so long (if operable), so it's imperative to get resupplied with backup pumps, new generators, fossil fuels and makeshift interim piping supplies and retrofit/repair as required/necessary.

This is a a race against time, and must be done before a meltdown occurs.

Second, I have no idea what cooling flow they are talking about in these news articles. BWR’s define adequate core cooling primarily as maintaining core submergence. Should the core come uncovered, there are a few other means to ensure core cooling. Cooling can be guaranteed, to a point, by boiling with no injection whatsoever. It’s a BWR. Emphasis on the B. I can guarantee that the plant operators don’t care where the water comes from. Hillary Clinton is an idiot (just wanted to throw that in). They will go through any source of water that is available. A skid mounted diesel pump with a bladder of fuel oil will suck from the river just fine. When the media sensationalizes something at 1000 times higher, it might benefit the reader if the author provided some reference to frame the argument with. Nuclear power measures everything by powers of ten. When you measure something with units starting with the prefix pico, 1000 times it probably won’t hurt too badly. This is my last point, I saw an article headlined with Another TMI feared. We could only be so fortunate. TMI, for all of its missteps (as egregious as they were) was an engineering success. Modern (circa 1960) power plant designs were proven to be of sound design. TMI suffered core damage and the average dose to a citizen of PA due to TMI is compared with the number of equivalent chest X-Rays they would have otherwise received. We’re worried about a few chest x-rays? The one thing that does concern me is that they issued an evac notice. No American nuclear utility is going to recommend to the state an evacuation for “precautionary” measures. You can bet on someone killing himself if you do. People are going to panic and do stupid things on the road, someone is going to flip their truck and kill their entire family because they’re afraid of what they don’t understand and will do anything in the name of protecting their loved ones. Evac notices aren’t given out lightly. I’m not being too Pollyanna here. I don’t envy those poor fucks one bit. I will, however, give them a little B.O.D. and wish them luck and trust their judgment concerning plant operations and the health and safety of the Japanese public.

One thing I've noticed from watching a lot of Japanese movies: Japanese is pretty much mumbled.

Unit 3 - Reactor was shut down and is cooled by the Reactor Core Isolation Cooling system. - Currently, we do not believe there is any reactor coolant leakage inside the reactor containment vessel. Unit 4 - Reactor has been shut down and sufficient level of reactor coolant to ensure safety is maintained. - Currently, we do not believe there is any reactor coolant leakage inside the reactor containment vessel. -- I don't know how old this information is.

At the end of the last Ice Age, the Cordillera ice sheet repetitively blocked the Missoula valley in what's now Montana.  Each time the ice dammed the valley, a lake half the volume of Lake Michigan formed.  And each time the lake got deep enough (after about 50 years of accumulation), the ice dam broke and the water drained all at once.

That phenomenon had tragic consequences in Hilo, Hawaii on April Fool's Day, 1946.  The water left Hilo Bay and the children at the school next to the shoreline all ran out to see the tidepools and neat stuff on the seafloor.  That contributed to the death toll when the tsunami came in.

My oldest daughter wrote a college paper in the form of a short story about the destruction of the Earth by a cosmic calamity and how people reacted, having about ten years' prior warning of the total annihilation of the planet.  In her story, she hijacks a spacecraft from NASA (the effort to build a space ark to save a remnant of humankind having failed) and heads to the edge of the Universe to see if she can meet God and ask Him to His face why He's decided to destroy Earth and everyone in it.

I adapted her story into a feature-length screenplay.  Writing the scene where she and I discover her two sisters among the suicides at a religious cult compound was a real treat, I'll tell you what.

Is true. With the unit shutdown the only way you can get clad failure is from overheat. That means uncovering the fuel.

The crawl on NHK says that the Japan Nuclear Agency, forget the full agency name, has detected cesium in air samples, which it says also indicates melting.

458 I'm not even sure I believe the readings they are quoting. The wind is allegedly blowing out to sea, for one. For two, if they had any indication of fuel damage, and they need to vent containment because of a loss of normal containment ventilation, they would vent directly from containment and unless there was a leak into containment, even with fuel failure, there would be no fission products in the air.

459 That would be fine if you knew when the failure occurred. You don't. Iodine and Cesium are not products of melting. They are normal fission products that is indicative of cladding failure only, and that failure could be quite small.

460 The presence of Cs and I indicate clad damage but not necessarily "melting". Cs and I are fission products normally maintained within the fuel rods. 

Zr clad starts failing at around 1200°F. The fuel itself doesn't start melting until you get to 5000°F.

One problem with the clad failing is Zr-Water reaction which starts up as it fails. That produces H2 gas which can be ignited in the containment if an ignition source is present. That can cause a failure of the containment.

My error on that.  When the crawl came around again and the english anouncer came on, the correct report was cesium was detected "outside", not in air samples.

Under the plan, 2 valves close to the container would be opened manually, but radiation level on the second valve was found higher than expected.

The operation has been suspended because of the possibility that workers could be exposed to radiation. The utility is reportedly studying how to open the valve by replacing workers at a short interval, or using electric remote control.

The Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency says if radioactive substance is released in the air, safety of residents evacuated beyond a 10-kilometer radius from the No.1 reactor will be ensured.
