Hm, I wonder how we might have become soft. Peter Kirasow:
There is a soft America and a tough America; a dependent America and an independent America; an entitlement America and a productive America. Which policies are more likely to produce a soft, dependent, and entitlement society? Which ones are more likely to produce a tough, independent, and productive society? The president seems blissfully unaware. The Obama brand of liberalism not only is likely to contribute to a “softer” America, but a soft-headed America as well. We condemn tea-partiers and veterans as racists and potential terrorists but we release actual terrorists from Guantanamo because the evident cruelties of that country-club facility are too terrible to bear. We demonize the hard-won, self-made success of risk-takers, but shovel millions of their hard-earned dollars to prop up the uncompetitive but politically correct enterprises of the well-connected. Government policies proliferate that punish effort, risk, and success but reward sloth, identity, and failure.
...
Soft America eschews absolutes, derides standards, ridicules heroes, and scoffs at virtue.
I wonder where America could have lost its competitive edge. It couldn’t possibly have anything to do with a government that blows billions on green energy boondoggles while making it harder to drill for oil while trying to make electricity rates “skyrocket.” It couldn’t have to do with extending unemployment benefits to 99 weeks (and rising), or to bailouts or perhaps advice like this offered by Michelle Obama:“We left corporate America, which is a lot of what we’re asking young people to do,” she tells the women. “Don’t go into corporate America. You know, become teachers. Work for the community. Be social workers. Be a nurse. Those are the careers that we need, and we’re encouraging our young people to do that. But if you make that choice, as we did, to move out of the money-making industry into the helping industry, then your salaries respond.” Faced with that reality, she adds, “many of our bright stars are going into corporate law or hedge-fund management.”
Or maybe it has something to do with the influence of tough leaders like Nancy Pelosi who said Obamacare was a jobs bill because:
“Think of an economy where people could be an artist or a photographer or a writer without worrying about keeping their day job in order to have health insurance.”
Thank goodness we have Obamacare now so we can compete with the Chinese at photography.
So, it appears the good Doctor Obama has succeeded in spotting the symptoms, but failed abysmally in diagnosing the reasons for his patient's ailing condition.
Hint: He'd breathe better, doctor, if your foot wasn't pressing quite so hard on his throat, and he might show more energy and activity if you weren't keeping him prisoner in a padded room.

Let's try to solve this Obama Mystery with the help of Obama's own words!
#1: "The way I think about it is, this is a great, great country that had gotten a little soft and we didnÂ’t have that same competitive edge that we needed over the last couple of decades."
That was yesterday.
And this was seventeen months ago:
#2: "WeÂ’re not, weÂ’re not trying to push financial reform because we begrudge success thatÂ’s fairly earned. I mean, I do think at a certain point youÂ’ve made enough money."

Also:
Watergate did not have a body count; Obama sold weapons to a murderous criminal organization.

There was a thread on her recently and, gosh if she doesn't have a good life. She's on about a half-dozen corporate boards and seems to go from one do-nothing job to another.
What's that ongoing leftist lament? You know, "The rich keep getting richer. Their wealth gets passed from one generation to the next, it's the same people who have all the money."
Posted by: SCOAMF at September 30, 2011 12:54 PM (0fUOB)
More than one somebody has said that recently.
My point, badly put, was that the 3rd quarter was so bad the talking heads want to pretend that prosperity is just around the corner in the 4th quarter. But they can't even get that right, they just had a guy on that said 'the government is out of money so we're boned.' So, I guess, no green shoots for us.

Meanwhile the great northwestern built entirely with private funds survived handily.
Posted by: Vic at September 30, 2011 04:47 PM (M9Ie6)
That's not really a huge boondoggle if you look at like the Interstate Highway system or the moon shot - a need to improve E/W communication to tie the country together. It was hardly the first public works project - canals, other railroads.
The Northwestern was a generation or so later, so conditions were different. Even if they wanted to, they couldn't have emulated his plan in 1867. There wasn't anyone there to build up a market.
You are grabbing at little things - JB tried to force a proslavery constitution on a state against the wishes of 90 percent of the residents, throwing his own personally selected troubleshooter under the bus in the process, and triggering a mini war there. Then for kicks he drove a wedge in the party that assured that a Republican would win and the South would secede. Then he watched and did nothing as the actual Southern States seceded and took most of the arms for the whole country with them.
JB sets an entirely different standard for failure.

Hoover didn't cause the 1929 crash.
He tried fixing the broken economy with public works projects, volunteerism, raising the taxes on the highest income bracket, and instituting tariffs. Hoover should have known tariffs didn't help the Jefferson administration's economy. Given that raising taxes and tariffs didn't help, it's better to argue that FDR knew better than to carry on messing up for a decade on a whim (since Europe recovered though FDR wouldn't let America recover). The Democrats haven't a leg to stand on with their demands today.

Truth's a two-edged sword. Why wouldn't the Union General who ordered a war against civilians (unlike the South that never directed battles to kill Northern civilians and destroy entire regions of life, burning down cities and farms) and had Shermann torch the South, then sent in the Carpetbaggers to impede the South's economic recovery, why wouldn't he carry on his war after it was over by fighting the KKK? Don't think that it wasn't popular in the North to play victor in the South, denying ex-Confederate votes, etc. That was the rationale motivating the KKK, self preservation since the North/Grant wasn't satisfied with winning.
/*Yes, my families fought against the KKK when it was extremely unpopular to do so.

If she can avoid double postings, she's hired.
*cute!*

Speaking of soft, the best lines from of Jon Stewart, heard recently while talking about 'Operation Fast & Furious':
"Fox News, you'd better call your doctor. That erection you've got is going to last a lot longer than four hours!"
heh

Hey, aren't the liberals the ones that are all into the miraculous powers of "self-esteem"? You know, where you build up someone's character by telling them how wonderful they are, whether they are really accomplished at anything or not? Everybody wins a prize!
So, follow me on this now... then by their own lights, what are all these liberals really trying to do to America by continually telling most Americans how shitty they are at everything, and that they are the root of all the world's problems? Hmmmm? I think I have a hunch. Fuckers.
Like the Top Gun Air Boss said, "I. Want. Some. Butts!" and I reckon come November next year, we're gonna nail us some nice fat ones !!

My Great-great Grandmother held off a dozen Comanch with a stool and a dead chicken. Only hope I can do as well.

“Don’t go into corporate America. ... Be a nurse."
Right. Because nurses don't work for corporations that run hospitals.
Seriously, where do get these idiots from?

America's gone soft? That's odd, Obama's certainly made things very hard for most Americans, what with all the unemployment and corporate-crony theft going on.
Perhaps on November 15, 2012, we'll show him how hard we've become. And then things will become harder for his eco-marxist minions.

I can't help it. Every time I see the First Wookie it goes soft for days. It takes liberal doses of internet pron to get things back to normal.
[ what? OH, not THAT kind of soft ]
never mind
