Obama at 41% Approval in Texas
— CAC

Re-elect number is at 43%, with 50% saying "for the love of God someone else".
Shaky numbers, but hey, it is just Texas. Maybe we need to really worry.

Oh wait. Those numbers aren't for the Lone Star State.

They are for Pennsylvania: "When asked if they think President Obama deserves reelection, 43% say he has done his job well enough to deserve reelection, while 50% say it is time to give a new person a chance. The fact that 1 in 2 voters say they are looking for someone else suggests Obama has very little room to grow and that Pennsylvania will again be a toss-up state in next yearÂ’s presidential election, particularly if the slow economic recovery continues to haunt the president."

This according to Susquehanna Polling and Research's latest release here.

One silly poll though doesn't mean a trend right?
Well, before OBL became shark feces and bad economic news started pummeling us yet again, noted right-wing pollster Tom Jensen of the uber-conservative Public Policy Polling found the same ugly numbers back in April.

Here is the deal. Pennsylvania always flirts with us, but has not gone red since 1988. That painful fact already declared (so no need to mindlessly repeat it like Eeyore with a stuttering problem down in the comments) these numbers are just ugly for President Obama. Pennsylvania was a killing field for Democrats in 2010, and his approval ratings at the time were actually better during the Demplosion than now.

Pennsylvania is, in my view, the ultimate barometer for what 2012 will look like. There are eight states that voted more Republican than Pennsylvania in 2000, 2004, and 2008. Another four that voted more Republican than Pennsylvania in 2 out of those 3 elections:

Pennsylvania as a barometer

It is very, very safe to say if the President has lost this state, say hello to President (INSERT REPUBLICAN HERE).

People were in a, generally, positive mood in 1983. Things were good and getting better.

In 1983 there was the perception of a brighter tomorrow. Today in Obama's 3rd year there is uncertainty and a negative outlook for the future.

Yeah, probably.

Posted by: MWR at June 09, 2011 10:04 AM (4df7R)

77 Well, it's not like we don't know the reasons for this "unexpected" result. All signs are starting to point to a double-dip recession and if the housing market tanks much further (increasing the number of risky mortgages floating around out there) somebody somewhere is finally going to do the "unexpected" thing and call it what it is -- a Depression. And this time, the Democrats own it. The numbers out of PA are a clear indication that the MBM won't be able to smooth this one over.

If the economy does not improve, or worse tanks even further, it would not surprise me if early in 2012 some "advisors" (who shall remain nameless and unlauded) will suggest to The One that he might want to sit 2012 out.

Probably not but I would not be too surprised.

97 so PA has last gone red in 1988 when Bush stomped Dukakis electoraly, let's look at the number since: 1992 - Clinton 45% Bush 36% Perot 18% (D+9) 1996 - Clinton 49% Dole 40% Perot 10% (D+9) 2000 - Gore 51% Dubya 46% Nader 2% (D+5) 2004 - Kerry 51% Dubya 48% (D+3) 2008 - Obama 54% McCain 44% (D+10) Posted by: YRM (Go Heat, Go Canucks) at June 09, 2011 02:08 PM (UzBwz) So then if Obama LOSES PA, as the polling indicates, shift the D+ results over accordingly, and you see where I am going with this. We don't need to win it. But as a canary in the Democratic coal mine, it is pretty nasty.

100 Lived in PA from 2001-2005.  Just moved back in Sept. of 2010, right before the election.  I can tell you this much, the mood has certainly changed in the past 5+ years.  I'm in pretty-solid union territory that reliably votes Dem, but you hear nothing but negatives about Obama.  Haven't seen a single Obama bumper sticker in 8 months (trust me, that is telling.)

Posted by: Dave at June 09, 2011 10:15 AM (Xm1aB)

118 I know the reality of Pennsylvania as a cocktease for conservatives. I also know and can back it up with previous election results, that if Republicans either flip PA or hold Obama to a narrow win, they win the election anyway because of the pile of electoral votes they would get before they flipped it.
Hence using it as a barometer.

Posted by: CAC at June 09, 2011 02:06 PM (JEVge)

Actually, NJ is the ultimate cocktease.  Inexplicably, they always poll GOP early in the season.

PA has a lot of "conservative Democrats", particularly in NEPA and in the Pittsburgh area.  These are people who vote Democrat even though they oppose almost everything the national party stands for.  They've been lulled by "pro-life" Democrats and turned off by pro-choice Republicans.

It's not unreasonable (especially after Corbett and Toomey) that they would go GOP nationally someday.

I think PA might this year, but here's the thing: Obama WILL have to campaign in PA and he will also have to campaign in NJ.  Heavily.  I know the new GOP governors are having rocky starts, but I suspect that there will be very little OH and FL summer campaigning for Obama/Biden.

Oh, they'll make a stop or two, but that's just to fool the media into thinking they have secret internal polls that make them look winnable.

132 I live a little NW of of Philly (Pheonixville to be exact), and PA is a really diverse state. You have the two population centers of Pittsburgh and Philly sandwiching a large rural / mining state. While it is is possible that flyover country can overcome the margin of fraud in the two most union dominated cities in the country (helpfully policed by the Black Panthers), I wouldn't bet on it.

On the other hand, if the EPA really does try to kill off coal, we might see  some movement out in western PA from D to R.

At any rate, hope springs eternal Charlie Brown, (Maybe this time Lucy won't pull up the football).

There's also al-Qaida's favorite family: staying at the WTC Mariott on 9/11, took a vacation in Bali just in time for the 10/12 bombing, and were in London for the Underground bombings.

Thank gaia my family has always been staunch conservative.  I was floored to hear my 83-yr-old mother telling the story of how the (distant) relatives down the street thought FDR was a saint, seeing as how he wanted to ensure everyone was taken care of.  She said they had a picture of him hanging in their living room.  While those folks are long gone, their middle-aged kids who still live there had Obama yard signs up in '08 as well as pro-coal signs.  Figure that out.
