Obama Botches Bible Quote; Media Matters Botches Defense
— Ace

I don't really care a lot that Obama missed a clause in a Bible verse. (He missed the part about "renews their strength" and went right into "soar on wings like eagles.")

But what is Media Matters being paid for? In spinning for the Divine One who can Maketh No Error, they claim, gee whiz, these winguts apparently don't know there is more than one version of the Bible, and Obama was quoting accurately from the New International Version.

Media Matters opines:

This would be funny if it weren't so pathetic.

And to prove Obama accurately quoted the New International Version they link the passage in question, which confirms the "renews their strength" part is absent in that translation which also contains the "renews their strength" part, proving that Obama did indeed botch this version of the quotation as well.

They are linking that to prove he accurately quoted from it, apparently not bothering to click on the link themselves and discover, nope, he was wrong according to that version, too.

As Media Matters says:

This would be funny if it weren't so pathetic.

I heareth thee, brother. I feeleth thee.

Question: Media Matters is so stupid and makes so many grotesque errors like this -- do you think it's possible they're smart enough to plan these errors just to drive traffic to their site?

Gotta be some reason for the stupidity.

Ahem: "pastordan" at "Religious Dispatches," which seems to be one of those left-wing fake evangelical organizations that's so hot for Obama, makes the same error, following Media Matters.

But like this is supposedly a religious website, right? Unlike Media Matters, they pretend to have a familiarity with the text, right?

So how come they don't bother to check the quote either?

They also get quite huffy that these wingnuts don't understand their Bibles the way the leftwingnuts do.

3 We still need a "Bible by Ace".

Preferably one that enshrines each aspect of the Ace-of-Spades lifestyle as mandatory, or forgivable with a penance that also infuriates collectivists.

6 They don't expect people to click on a ,spit, bible verse. That might infect their minds and computers with religion. The people that read them will just accept it just like they will accept that the woman who filmed the planned parenthood disaster is bad because she gets funding from a group who also has a nephew who used to work for the Koch brother's mechanic.

7 "On wings of Eagles" was the book Ken Follett wrote about Perot getting his people out of Iran when the Shah was deposed.

Sometimes the coincidences in all of this are amazing.  If you put them in a book it would be labeled unrealistic.

16 Amazing,  when pointed out that the NIV version is wrong too, the MM folk pile on and say "semantics", "quibbling", "It's not supposed to be an exact quote", and "why do you wingnuts care about something so minor anyway?".

Even though the point of the MM article itself was to prove that Obama was right, but what's some very very obvious evidence when there's a narrative to be made.

I like the way they also think that all us "fundamentalists" use the King James exclusively. I have only met a very few people who thought that. Personally I like to use my interlinear version these days.

Though admittedly one of my grandfather's congregation once objected to his use of the NIV saying, "If the King James was good enough for Peter and Paul, it is good enough for me." That was decades ago, though.

Obama's version of the 23rd psalm.

The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want.
He maketh me tee off in green fairways:
He leadeath my golf ball over the still waters.
He restores my birdie.
He Leadeth me in the golf paths of the 13th fairway.

Yea, though I watch my caddie walk through the valley of Sawgrass,
I fear no chip shot: For thou are with my with me;
Thy five iron and three wood, they comfort me.

You prepare a table before me at the 19th hole in the presence of my
subordinates. You anoint my head with Banana Boat sunscreen: my beer
mug overflows.

Surely goodness and the peasants will follow me all the days of my exalted life, and I will dwell in the Obama White House forever.

Every single English version of the Bible contains the phrase "renew their strength" or something like that. Why can't they just admit Obama got his quote wrong? Everyone does it.

58 Ace: "Gotta be some reason for the stupidity."

It's a propaganda operation. The defense doesn't have to be correct though some truthiness is helpful. The whole point is to provide a rebuttal, any rebuttal, to say at a future point that there was a rebuttal to the critique. The technique is to set a barrier to discussion so that the exposure of the mistake continues no further. Media Matters et al. are counting on ignorance of the critic or of the audience to not know anything beyond the most superficial context which can be quickly provided as, "No, we showed where X was correct about Y so you may shut up now." Their hope is that there is no follow-up which is usually a safe bet. Plus, even if there is a follow-up, the propagandist can muddle up the mistake with versions of "facts."

It's a slick trick when audiences have the attention span of fleas. Get a rebuttal, however wrong, out ASAP so that a known mistake doesn't become a concrete mistake.

No question, though it was a little archaic even when it was first translated. The problem is that as our knowledge of Koine Greek and Classical Hebrew has improved and the English language has changed, it no longer conveys the meaning of the original languages into English. Saying that God "condescends" to us carries a very different implication now than it did a couple hundred years ago, for example.

98 For kicks, I waded through the comments section at Media Matters to see what they were saying.  Let me first say that experience was like Andy Dufresne crawling "through 500 yards of shit-smelling foulness I can't even imagine".  Anyway, it was the usual bashing of all things conservative, Christian and Fox News and how Obama had used the NIV version.  Until someone pointed out that the NIV version did in fact include the phrase "renew your strength".  Then the argument became how teh one was "paraphrasing" the quotation, and off they went merrily along.

When you have the ability to move the goal posts at will, you can win every argument known to man.

Sheesh, this is one of the most recognizable passages from the OT.  Those who wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings as eagles, they shall run and not grow weary, they shall walk and not faint.

(see it's progressively poetical, the idea being some trials in life are so tough that walking and not fainting can take more strength than mounting up with wings as eagles).

It's in all translations.

Oh Dave, don't be such a literalist!  You know that lefties don't believe in a literal interpretation of the Bible!

To them God is everywhere and everyone.  Besides, The Bible was written hundreds of years ago.  Like The Constitution, it's a decrepit, ancient document that has no basis for application in modern life today.  Progressives have evolved much past all of that good and evil, sin and salvation stuff.

105 61 ...And Saint Attila raised the hand grenade up on high, saying, "O LORD, bless this Thy hand grenade that with it Thou mayest blow Thine enemies to tiny bits, in Thy mercy." And the LORD did grin and the people did feast upon the lambs and sloths and carp and anchovies and orangutans and breakfast cereals, and fruit bats and large chu... And the LORD spake, saying, "First shalt thou take out the Holy Pin, then shalt thou count to three, no more, no less. Three shall be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, neither count thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three. Five is right out. Once the number three, being the third number, be reached, then lobbest thou thy Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch towards thy foe, who being naughty in My sight, shall snuff it." For trivia buffs - the cartridge dimensions are the same. The chambers are different because the 5.56 is a higher pressure than the .223, over 62,000 psi vs. 55,000 for the .223.

The 5.56 has a larger chamber and longer throat (normally). You can shoot both in 5.56 chambers, but don't shoot 5.56 in .223 chambers.

114 Well, if'n he wasn't quoting it in the original Hebrew (which no longer exists, the versions the West uses now are based on later Hebrew versions), then he couldn't be exact.  And if'n he wasn't quoting it in Greek, then he wasn't using the same version Christ and the Apostles did.  Given the number of wildly varying translations, I'm sure someone will dig up his version somewhere, at some time.

Heck, this guy can't even get quotes of documents from the founding of this nation correct, what makes anyone think that he's gonna get something from the OT right?

Patrick

121 The President wasn't quoting, he was paraphrasing. If you look at the FOX Nation headline, "Obama Botches Bible Verse at Prayer Breakfast" and then look at the actual transcript of the President's talk - http://bit.ly/fgLyUD -  you see that he was not "quoting" the bible, but using lines from the passage as part of a prayer:

So my prayer this morning is that we might seek His face not only in those moments, but each and every day; that every day as we go through the hustle and bustle of our lives, whether itÂ’s in Washington or Hollywood or anywhere in between, that we might every so often rise above the here and now, and kneel before the Eternal; that we might remember, Kaye, the fact that those who wait on the Lord will soar on wings like eagles, and they will run and not be weary, and they will walk and not faint.

When I wake in the morning, I wait on the Lord, and I ask Him to give me the strength to do right by our country and its people. And when I go to bed at night I wait on the Lord, and I ask Him to forgive me my sins, and look after my family and the American people, and make me an instrument of His will.

I say these prayers hoping they will be answered, and I say these prayers knowing that I must work and must sacrifice and must serve to see them answered. But I also say these prayers knowing that the act of prayer itself is a source of strength.

Elsewhere in his speech the President does quote the bible, and when he does he uses quote marks:

As it’s written in Job, “God’s voice thunders in marvelous ways. He does great things beyond our understandings.”

So, it was part of a reflection on prayer, not an attempt to make an exact quote -- a reflection on prayer that FOX Nation then chose to "botch" for some reason. As the FOX Nation article commenter 'Autumnwind' so ironically put it:

"By their fruits you shall know them"

128 pastordan is pathetic. He's so ready to talk about others' religious ignorance, as he does to Kathleen Parker a few days earlier, and can't even take the elementary step of checking the Scripture his church claims to follow. And then he defends his ignorance with pseudo-intellectual/theological rationales about "understanding the text". No, pastordan, this is about simple laziness and arrogance, your presuming to lecture others without having the sense to make sure what you're saying isn't complete bullshit. You've been eating theological bullshit for so long, you apparently doesn't recognize it for what it is.

129 Religion Dispatches is an evangelical site? Have you ever read it? Or do you not see a distinction between "evangelical" and "religious in any way"? Few evangelicals write for RD, Ace. It's mostly mainline Protestants, though also rabbis and others.

And by the way, to the person who said the cite is pro-Obama, again: ever actually read it? They routinely criticize him. It's just from the left rather than the right. Again, there are distinctions here, this time between "Democrat" and "Obama" and "left."

"The left's true god is Obozo.  They worship him with blind faith."

Well, in the same way that the New Testament supersedes the Old for many Christians, Obama's words instantly become divine gospel for the Left... until further notice.

Thus, if you read the "New Foundation" Version of the the O'Bible, Obama's version of scripture will always be correct, no matter how many times it changes.

131 BTW, that lefty myrmidon "pastordan" has now "corrected" his error and closed comments.  Typical lefty coward, so I guess I'll have to retort here.

I like how he tries to deflect his own stupidity:

""Gotcha," however, is neither a functional equivalent of a smear campaign, nor a moral one. Media Matters mistakenly attributed the scripture quote to the NIV; I saw nothing obviously wrong with that, and failed to notice the omission. Shame on me, but I'm not the one charging a sitting president with misquoting the Bible."

No asshole, you're the one falsely charging everyone else of misquoting the Bible while pretending to be a biblical scholar.  And as a minister who uses the NIV in your own church, you should probably at least check it first before reflexively defend your true God.  What a pathetic excuse for a stalking horse.
