Obama: Capitalism Has "Never Worked"
— Ace

He says "trickle-down economics" rather than capitalism, but "trickle-down economics" is merely an argument in favor of capitalism. There is no such thing as "trickle-down economics." There is capitalism, and the argued advantage of it, which is the trickling down of created wealth.

So he is in fact saying, as the headline puts it, that capitalism has never worked.

Meanwhile his Suicide Solution Socialism has apparently set the economic world on fire, I guess.

I don't talk about this too often because Monty does such a good job and it's frankly depressing. But Europe is probably going to plunge into something in between a recession or a depression, and may erupt in violence and political disorder.

And Europe is Obama's lodestar. That's where he wants to take us. To the extent we haven't gotten there yet, it's because Americans are soft, lazy bitter clingers who hate other sorts of people (and their politico-economic systems).

So Europe's 60 or 70 year history with socialism is about to end in violent upheavals and misery... and here's this ignoramus saying that it's capitalism which is the proven failure.

Video below, and some more commentary from Hot Air.

Tina Korbe is a little heartened that Obama has unmasked himself:

As tempting as it is to think not only that the government could supply us all with a comfortable living but also that it should, I’m tempted by something else far more. That “something else” is the Founders’ faith in self-government and voluntary associations in and through civic society. Obama said today “we can’t return” to a “do-it-on-your-own” economy, but what he fails to realize is that, for Americans, it’s not a choice between going it alone and going it with the government. He cited the example of a company — Marvin Windows and Doors — that voluntarily refuses to lay off its employees — but confusedly seemed to think more government involvement would help to proliferate that kind of company. But the CEO himself admits a sense of community inspires his faith in his employees — not any kind of government mandate. That CEO clearly keeps faith with the Founders, who, in the construction of our government, controlled for self-interest, but also admonished citizens to remember moral obligations to others.

Today, the president did sweepingly what he has done patchily for the past few months, did at last what I have long wished he would do. He honestly argued for a welfare state and directly stated his disbelief in trickle-down economics. For once — again, except in a few places — this wasn’t conservative rhetoric to cover up progressive policies. It was progressive rhetoric to promote progressive policies. Nobody who reads this speech should be in doubt as to what he’s selling — but they should think deeply about how much freedom they’re willing to give up to buy it.

We can't return to a "do it yourself" economy?

Jesus God. He's really pretty much making the case for socialism, isn't he?

4 I'm trying to wrap my mind around the idea that we really, really elected someone who thinks this way.  And I can't do it.

As much as I know he's a socialist, I couldn't believe- until I read this article- that he was that deep a believe in the cradle-to-grave society.  He wants us all to be slaves of the state.

Someone should ask him if capitalism worked for the post-civil-war blacks, or if they would have been better off to remain as slaves.

"trickle-down" is Capitalism.  It's the idea that I work and get rich, and then hire people to work for me: so my wealth "trickles down" to those below me.

There is no, and never has been, such thing as a "trickle down" economy.

39 Obama is catching some fire from Republicans like Jonah Goldberg for making favorable references to Theodore Roosevelt today. Earlier Goldberg linked to the NYT-with the comment that went something like-"remember when the NYT criticized Theodore Roosevelt's Socialism?"-(The article in the NYT dates from something like 1910) Here is an excerpt: Theodore Roosevelt has now thought out and matured his doctrine of Socialism. It is not the Marxian Socialism. Much that Karl Marx has taught is rejected by present-day Socialists. Mr. Roosevelt achieves the redistribution of wealth in a simpler and easier way. He leaves the land, the mines, the factories, the railroads, the banks-all the instruments of production and exchange– in the hands of their individual owners, but of the profits of their operation he takes whatever share the people at any given time may choose to appropriate to the common use. [...] Marx left Socialism in its infancy, a doctrine that stumbled and sprawled under the weight of its own circumstances. RooseveltÂ’s doctrine is of no such complexity. It has all the simplicity of theft and much of its imprudence. [...] Mr. RooseveltÂ’s plan for the reorganization of Government and society is set forth in his article on “The Progressive Party” in the September issue of The Century Magazine. Now here is Newt Gingrich in the Ripon Forum 1989: Ripon Forum: But beyond personnel selections, on what issues will you involve moderates? Gingrich: To really understand my hopes, let me give you an outline of my way of thinking. Activities occur at four levels. The top level is vision, the next level is strategy, and after that follow projects and tactics. Our larger vision is to develop a caring, humanitarian reform party. That's an interesting term, by the way, because [former White House chief of staff] Ken Duberstein said it ought to be caring; my wife said it ought to be humanitarian; and Steve Gunderson said it ought to be reform. And later in the interview: Ripon Forum: But what happens on such issues as urban development, where conservatives historically have opposed government spending? Will the center-right coalition hold? Or will it splinter when more activist, government-oriented solutions are needed? Gingrich: There's going to be a lot of arguing, but I don't think it will splinter. In Teddy White's "The Making of The President" from 1960, you will find a description of Theodore Roosevelt and an active conservatism. That is the model I've had in my mind for 28 years.

I know it started with him long before, but you learn all the wrong lessons in law school:

(1) Life is a zero-sum game.  Somebody wins, somebody loses.

(2) Men can mete out true justice.

(3) Credentials are more important than accomplishments.

(4) You can get wealthy without providing someone a good or a service they voluntarily choose.

(5) Math is for chumps.

(6) Don't know something? Call in experts and do whatever they tell you.

So on and so on.

63 "Trickle-down" is common sense.  An extreme example is a lottery winner.  What do they do? yeah.. money is spent everywhere.. people close to the winner benefit.  So when your neighbor is rich, thats a good thing.  You just might get a job or a recommendation from them.

Another example is from a few years ago when the Somali pirates were running wild.  Wherever they operated, after capturing a ship, huge boom town would start up out of nowhere.  Not hard to picture how that happens.  If trickle-down didn't work, that would never happen. The concept of the 'boom town' wouldn't even exist in our minds

Obama is an asshole and he's also not very smart.  Socialism has been great.  His 3 year 'frozen in time' economics has worked out great.  I've never been so happy watching my world crumble before me.

He pretty much made the freaking case for socialism a few days before his election...I want to say it was at the Joe the Plumber event, but I'm not sure. He just came right out and said he was going to redistribute the wealth.

Up until then, I thought he was going to win. But at that point, I thought, no, the American people will never stand for that. You see how good my judgement is.

An awful lot of Americans want socialism, despite all the evidence in front of them now.

124 If you've been paying close attention, pretend to agree with a liberal when they talk to you (or at least keep your mouth shut), they've been about full out-and-out socialism for a long time.
When they said "health care is a right," that was socialism.
When the said "a job is a right," that was socialism.
And on and on.
The depressing part isn't that they believe that stuff, it's that most of America doesn't believe they believe it--the whole rot about "we both love our country, we just have different ideas about how to make it better" canard I first heard nearly 20 years ago.

In their mind, because so many of them do not own a business, do not have any expenses beyond housing, transportation and food, they see all the "rich" who are worth millions and they think "if only we took a little from them and gave it to me everyone else, we'd all have a good, comfortable life."

It doesn't enter into their thinking that the money the "rich" have isn't sitting there doing nothing, that it is out there putting people to work, funding investments, paying others.

Socialism is selfish.

It is, and never was, about giving money to everyone, it's about giving an easier life to those who agitate for it. Your typical professor, making $200k+ (Hi, Elizabeth Warren) doesn't think they are rich, they think they work way too hard and will never, ever give half their salary to someone else--even though they advocate that another making as much as they should make do with half.  But, they figure if we'd just take more from someone else, they'd not have to work so hard. It's not about the poor or the working class--it's about them. They are lazy.

143 reminder: We’ve had two perfect “experiments” in Communism vs Capitalism. The West/East Germany divide and the North/South Korea divide. No significant differences in populations or resources. The only difference is/was the ruling ideologies. On Side A: blight, decay, starvation, misery, paranoia, repression. On Side B: success, wealth, plenty, openness, freedom. Ask a typical US college professor, and he’d say Side A was capitalism and Side B the glorious Leftist “future that is now” in those blessed locales (and he’d throw in Cuba for good measure). But for any normal person, the results of these two real-world experiments are only too evident. Europe is on the verge of collapse.

The US President is an unrepentant socialist.

The two men most likely to be the GOP presidential nominee are both big-government Republicans who believe they can better "manage" the welfare state.

Tell me again why Ron Paul is crazy.  Please, explain.  I've never supported the guy, but somebody PLEASE explain to me why Mittens or Newt is a better option.

I'm finding it harder and harder to convince myself that a collapsing empire desperately needs to maintain multiple military bases all over the world.  I'm sorry if that makes me a not-so-great American.

175 I saw this part of the speech on TV.  He was talking out of both sides of his mouth almost the entire time.  He'd champion the virtues of the free market one sentence, then decrying "free market solutions" in another. Almost immediately after blaming the state of the economy on tax cuts for the wealthy and insufficient government spending... after bragging about signing "spending cuts".

It's pretty clear that he has no real clue how the free market works.  Every other fucking sentence was the same "some people say" strawman bullshit he always falls back on.

Also, he directly blamed the Bush tax cuts (which he renewed) for the poor economy.

There was no coherent message; just class warfare and trying to frame job-killing regulations and massive government overreach as being in the spirit of Republican Teddy Roosevelt.

There's two schools of thought on what Obama has done these last 3 years...has he tried to revive the economy according to his illogical socialist economic theories?  And failed.  Or has he deliberately used illogical socialist economic theories in order to destroy the economy?  And succeeded.

How many more people will be on some form of the public dole by next November?  As it is half the people who work don't even pay taxes for cryan out loud.  Add to that the explosion in food stamp recipients, more than two years of unemployment insurance payments, all the various welfare programs, and a majority of people might not think socialism is so bad after all.

White House to Push Cordray Appointment to Consumer Bureau

The White House will begin a campaign Monday to push for the confirmation of Richard Cordray to lead the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.

[...]

Obama is scheduled to speak Tuesday in Osawatomie, Kan., where he will discuss themes connected with the push to confirm Cordray, according to Earnest.

“The argument in favor of confirming Mr. Cordray ... dovetails nicely with the speech President Obama will deliver on Tuesday ... [on] his vision for America where everyone engages in fair play, everyone does their fair share and everyone gets a fair shot,” he said.

208 What a frigging idiot the writer of this article.

Obama said "trickle-down economics".  He did not say "capitalism".

Capitalism is a wonderful thing, but not when the middle class and below are locked out of a living wage and a future because all they have to hope for is a little "trickle-down".

In the 1950's, the US had the best economy in its history - back when the top tax rate was 91%.  In those days, the wealthy CEOs and business owners reinvested the profits back into the factories, machinery and workers pay and benefits.  They did it to avoid paying that 91% to the government.

Nowadays, there is nothing to prevent the less socially-conscious (or patriotic) of those owners from taking the money and running off to Monte Carlo.

I can't understand why so many poor, ignorant "conservatives" vote against their own self-interests by supporting the wealthy elite in the hope that a little piss will "trickle-down".

231 There is a distinction between socialism and communism. Marx himself said socialism was an intermittent step between capitalism and communism.

We started becoming a socialist country in the early 1900s with the beginning of the progressive era. We achieved full socialism with FDR in the 30s. In the 60s began pushing in Fascism with the government controlling every aspect of buisness and private life through regulatory agencies.

In the 70s we started full on communism with the government taking private property.

We have not had actual capitalism in this country for over 100 years.

275 Also the continued liberal citing of the former (and intentionally misleading) 90% top tax rate is based on marginal, not actual rates.

Back then, the ways you could go about deducting income was legion- nobody with a tax accountant or lawyer actually paid anything remotely close to 90%.  When Reagan lowered the rate, he also removed a lot of deductions that allowed people to shelter a very substantial amount of income.

285 This has been obvious from day one. He's a committed socialist. Probably has been since his early teens. Flirted with even more radical left-wing thought in his college years and 20s.

His governing philosophy has been to move the US to the Left wherever and whenever he can. Incremental when necessary, in large steps when possible (Obamacare.)

Obama's great insight was that if he spoke vaguely and in coded language and smiled a lot that Americans wouldn't realize what a hard-core leftist he was.

He was right.

301 I hate to say it, but people like this kind of crap.  "Oo, free stuff for me and I don't have to work for it!  I'll vote for that."  The average person doesn't have enough foresight to realize those who actually create the wealth won't keep doing it under those conditions.  Yes, Joe Fucker gets a short term boost from stealing from others, but he's not bright enough to realize the long term catastrophe he's creating for himself and everyone else.  That, and so many people can't handle the fact that others may in fact be more valuable people to the rest of society that they become envious and would rather see the whole damn thing burn to hell rather than play second fiddle in heaven.

A lot of people actually deserve that North Korea model.  And I hate to say it, but I think they're going to bring it to all of us before too long.

337 It's not only the left, by any stretch of the imagination, but they are certainly the main members of the ruling class who think that the American electorate are idiots, and rightly so.  If the election were held today, it would be a horse race between the best the right can muster.  What better proof does anyone need?  Nearly half of this country would wish upon this country and probably at least a couple of generations that will follow, the ideology that has murdered hundreds of millions and that has never worked in the innumerable places it has been tried, and which even in a somewhat diluted form in Europe and even more diluted in this country, is responsible for the collapse of half of the world's economies as we speak.

338 Socialism?
We already live in a socialist country. Obama is not talking about socialism, he is talking about communism. The state ownership of all production and property. You will be allowed what you need. You will be forced to provide what you can produce.

Let me explain. I belonged to a forum where someone started a thread on taxation. He asked for everyone to investigate taxation. The thread starter began with the typical taxes, like income, ss, medicare, etc at all the differing levels, property, sales, etc. He started with about 150 distinct taxes. The last time I looked, it was about 15,000 types of distinct taxes.

Within the thread, I asked for people to look at what they made, and begin to estimate what their effective taxation was at. It turned out, that those that contributed were paying in the neighborhood of 60-75% effective taxation rates. This did not include things like inflation or other inestimable types of taxation.

I would say that we are already a socialist nation. We really do not own our property, allodial title no longer exists. We only rent our property.

We are so far away from a free market/individual rights society that communism is only a footstep away. If you can believe the conspiracy theorist, agenda 21 will take us the rest of the way.

Oh well, viva la resistance!

339 4. I'm trying to wrap my mind around the idea that we really, really elected someone who thinks this way.  And I can't do it.

It helps to grow up liberal and educated, knowing people from all walks of life, and from all over the world. It really is perverted that the Ivy League did this to us. Do you like Angela Davis, or bell hooks?  Well we got this black guy who was raised Communist, and we can teach him to hide his Whitey hating ways, and act and talk like any wealthy White Angelo-Saxon Protestant.

2nd Amendment says right to keep and bear arms "shall not be infringed".  We say, you can have what we allow, where we allow, and how we allow.

Nice home ya got there - our brethren in the Courts just said we can take it for whatever purpose we want.  Here, have a pittance in compensation.Your history, language - utterly malleable to our will.  And here's the fun part - you pay for us to indoctrinate your kids.

Your meager earnings from your own sweat? We take what we want, when we want, and use it to fund more means of oppressing you.

You think your vote counts? We pick the candidates.

Rule of law? You follow it; we do as we please.

Need a job to survive? Nah, we'll regulate it out of existence, send it off to a foreign country, and import a whole new class of peasants who will do it cheaper and whine less.

All this and more, little lamb.  And still you grovel, secure in your "belief" that you're free and that you matter.  It would be cute and endearing, if we cared anything about you.

1944 because of the war.

Once facing actual opposition, Republicans started to regain their footing, flipping the House and Senate in 1946 and coming close to axing Truman in 1948. All true.  What makes it particularly ironic, however, is that your rube and crazy blocs are hell bent on reelecting Barack.

Think about it:  Right now you're leading candidate is Gingrich.  Gingrich's greatest legacy as House Speaker was reelecting Clinton in 1996 on account of turning off the middle with those government shutdowns.  Then Gingrich doubled down on stupid and elected a bunch of Democrats and simultaneously defeated a lot of Republicans, in 1998 and 2000, as a result of the failed impeachment trial and of Gingrich's loose ethics and ultimately his quitting in disgrace.

If you nominate Gingrich he'll complete the lifetime trifecta by reelecting Barack.  Thing is, your rube and crazy demographics are so numbingly ignorant and irrational they won't be able even grasp the irony.  Heh.

New Hampshire, with at least 1 GOP candidate? 19 points.

President Obama's suckery has not gone unnoticed, the point now is to grab the bull by the horns in the areas MOST affected by it- Northeastern PA, Wisconsin outside of Madison, Macomb and Oakland counties in Michigan, the Vegas & Reno suburbs in Nevada. He does not realize that there are people and sovereign nations that hate freedom. Yes, using the ol neocon argument. Do you really think that Islam does not want to crush anything that goes against their theology?

Carter was an idiot in regards to those in the world that HATE those that do not believe in the same things they do.

By the way, coming off the era of the likes of Nixon using government to force price controls, it was an era of big government control. And Carter failed to see the problems inherent in inflation and interest problems.

It was an era that I grew up in at the high school level. I to this day remember the day when over the loudspeakers, we were informed when Reagan was shot. Nowadays, they would not do such a thing would they? Or would they?

379 Alright, I have to broach one subject that many in the conservative blogosphere have been afraid to address.

The conservatives make up 40% of the nation. There is another 40% of the country that is independant. There is a remainder that is liberal.

Now, if you think about the productive within the country, say the 53% that actually pay federal taxation, consider how many of those are actual taxpayers, that are not part of the public work force.

What would happen if the conservatives actually went Galt? Think about it, the socialists in our midst have been attempting to destroy our system. What if we helped them? Has ANYONE ever actually broached the idea?

Ann Barnhardt has stated that she is done feeding the system. I have broached the  topic.

383 #356  Surviving Carter?  First of all,  I voted for him simply because Jerry Ford pardoned Nixon.   That angered me so I voted for Carter.  (I came from a dem family although I liked Ford.) Let that be a lesson to single issue voters!

How to survive through those years?  I did a lot of crafts, learned to cook some recipes, watched a lot of soap operas, and gave up on paying attention to politics.  It was a very depressing time.

The real turnaround in public thinking came, unbelievably,  from the US Hockey Team's win over the Soviets at the Olypics in Lake Placid. It was really a booster to a country totally demoralized.  Then Reagan came along,  and I was at the polling place at 6AM to vote for him.  I still thought of myself as a democrat,  but I hated Carter so much I decided that Reagan couldn't be any worse,  and at least he was optimistic and loved the country and wouldn't be an embarrassment.

Haven't voted for a single dem since 1980. Never will.

Go back to earlier version of Firefox. I have an earlier version and it works fine. With my newer computer with Windows 7 I was having all kinds of problems with Firefox, switched to an older version and everything works fine.

Weekly. At least.

Yep, I just got screwed on a restaurant I built in New Mexico. 60 days just came and went for my bill. Just reached the general and he told me I have to wait because the owner is not paying him. The owner has paid all the subs down in NM but because I am a sub of the General, I have to wait. Now the General is telling me the owner is giving the General crap about his bill. I subbed as the site superintendant. If it was not for me, that thing would have taken an extra 3-4 weeks to open.

Man, I spent 7 weeks 7 days/wk and 12-14 hr days building that thing. If that owner is a dem I am putting a lien on that building tomorrow!

It's easy to think that Americans voted for this POS of a president. But the truth is that they were SOLD this POS in disguise. The entire campaign for POTUS was a masquarade that was gift wrapped with tinsel and bows by the leftist media that thought they knew what was in our best interest and felt ENTITLED to whatever liberties they needed to take to sell us their bill of goods. Well it's not even midnight and the mask has fallen off.

Folks it's time to focus our goals as conservatives. We no longer simply need to recapture the White House and Congress. It's now imperative that we also expose the media for the crimes they've committed and trace the money back to it's roots. George Soros and all his little minions needs to be revealed to the public along with their ambitions and intentions. I have NO doubt that Americans ( not the illegals but true American Citizens) will be outraged and motivated to action IF and WHEN the media are revealed for the pretentious and foolish part they have played in this crime against democracy.

For all the debate about among us about which of the Conservative Candidates would be best to confront Obama, I think any one of the top 4 candidates could do the job. Just as Jimmy Carter set the stage for what was the success of the Reagan years, Obama has taken the world so far left that virtually ANY of the top 4 conservatives will come across as a true leader stepping into the vacuum left by our current POS POTUS. This speech was his biggest mistake to date. To actually reveal his intentions after so slyly misleading the majority of the public for so long may be the best news we've had since the sillyness called ObamaCare was passed by Congress.

LISTEN UP: Socialism IS trickle-down economics. Trickle-down is the selling point of socialism. The name of the game is redistribution, from the rich to the poor. Socialism can only work as long as the population of the rich can engineer enough production to sustain the poor. The rich make piles of money which is then "trickled-down" to the poor.

A socialist who does not believe in his heart of hearts firmly, if he knows this or not, in trickle-down is a socialist who does not exist.

The entire attack on "trickle-down" is a sham. They know it's true. They are premised on that truth.

Laugh at them.

"Do it on your own" economy? Really? The image of Obama as a serial arsonist in a field full of dry strawmen is so totally appropriate here. I mean, the SCOAMF might, and I mean might, have a point - IF we're talking about the government of TR's day (federal budget in 1910 - $840M, ALL government spending in 1910 - $2.68B, ALL government spending 8% GDP) - source: http://bit.ly/rWfK7d).

Today, we pretty much have the expansive, cradle-to-grave welfare, do-it-all-for-you government that TR and the rest of the "progressives" envisioned and even moreso among the Euroweenies. How's that working out? Yeah, I know - the "progressive" response to failure is to double- and triple-down on said failure - doesn't mean the insanity of this straw-man can't be pointed-out.

Does anyone in The Stupid Party have the sense (and/or guts) to point that out?

445 I remember this image from my high school history book: Man holding an umbrella labeled "Trickle Down Economics" and coins falling from the sky and spreading out because of the umbrella. While it's always been explained that the money trickles down, it's really the OPPORTUNITY. The wealthy man risks his money and gives others the OPPORTUNITY to learn a business, get experience, make contacts and earn a living.

But he's RIGHT!!

Capitalism has utterly failed to give the lazy, indolent, and stupid La Dolce Vita. It's their 'right' you know. It's 'not fair' you have more. Obviously it's because of racism, sexism, and biggotry against those who just don't have the energy to rise up and go to work day in and day out.

Especially after a long afternoon and night of boozing and ingesting various drugs into their degraded bodies. Bodies degraded because YOU have kept them from those million dollar medical treatments they so richly deserve by being alive (or something).

"Maybe that's cause his wife earned $300K as a worthless advisor to a hospital in a clear cut, yet unexamined, case of patronage, that he has such a negative view of capitalism, cause his success is so worthless, that everyone must be worthless."

That's a good thought. To these people, success is (and in their minds, should be) linked to who in power you know, your political connections, your race and gender bona fides, what school you attended, etc., etc. If you are part of this kulturesmog, you are compensated at a robber baron's pay no matter your qualifications, and are enriched according to how well you play the political/crony capialist game.

Very little is made of applying simple hard work and all the intelligence you have to your chosen field, mastering your "craft" (whatever it may be), and doing all this for many years, working your way up as you go. That is for the plebians.
