Obama, DNC Behind Wisconsin Protests
— rdbrewer

It is meant to look like some sort of grassroots movement, but it isn't. They have phone banks, union thugs, social media--the works.

Organizing for America, Obama's campaign arm now under the umbrella of the DNC, has been mobilizing union members and supporters to rally against a proposed Wisconsin budget measure that would strip workers of collective bargaining rights and force them to contribute more for benefits.

Leaders have initiated phone banks and on-the-ground canvassing, and relied on a social media blitz on Facebook and Twitter to build turnout.

DNC Chairman Tim Kaine also reportedly spoke with Wisconsin union leaders and state legislators ahead of the protests, the Huffington Post reported, signaling his direct involvement in coordinating the effort.

Once again, the Community Organizer of the United States ("COOTUS") inserts himself into local politics. Not very presidential.

6 This illuminates my biggest problem with Obama. I'm not talking about the obvious; that I despise his politics and policies. No, it is that he has no dignity, he has no respect for the office, and he has no understanding of his position withing our government.

16 You know, I've been predicting that the first major battle in this new civil war would either be between public-sector workers and the private sector, or between retirees and workers. It looks like the PubSec vs Private Sector battles come first. Much will hinge on how this thing works out in Wisconsin. I think Democrats are hoping that one of two things will happen: either the GOP will buckle, or that the enraged Democrat throngs will get bored and go home. Either outcome is possible -- though I think the GOP is highly motivated to stand firm -- but this is just the first of many showdowns with public-sector unions in the months ahead.

24 The Republicans in the Wisconsin legislature need to call short sessions every day over the weekend, including the Presidents Day holiday. This will force the unions to pay their members to come to the capital building over the weekend, probably showing a dramatic decline in the number protesters. It will also force the Democrats to remain out of state, ruining their weekend plans with their families.

It's helpful in painting the Dems as the party wanting to force a government shutdown when they physically run away to shut down the Legislative branch of a State government.

And since Obama wants to Federalize the politics of the state showdowns with the unions, he gets to own their tactics, including the Wisconsin Dems and their legislative shutdown.

114 My understanding is that it basically says they can collectively bargain for their salaries, but not for benefits/pensions.

Don't normally like to quote myself, but as a follow-up:

I believe this is a brilliant move on many levels.  One of the things Teachers cry about most is that they're (supposedly) underpaid.  If you force them to look at their benefits like everyone else does, they really are paid at a (somewhat) reasonable level.  With the current status quo, they're paid very, very well.

To make that up, they'd have to jack their salaries through the roof.  This a) wouldn't fly, and b) would prove the lie of the "underpaid" argument.

Lol.  Here.

Collective bargaining – The bill would make various changes to limit collective bargaining for most public employees to wages.  Total wage increases could not exceed a cap based on the consumer price index (CPI) unless approved by referendum.  Contracts would be limited to one year and wages would be frozen until the new contract is settled.  Collective bargaining units are required to take annual votes to maintain certification as a union.  Employers would be prohibited from collecting union dues and members of collective bargaining units would not be required to pay dues.  These changes take effect upon the expiration of existing contracts.  Local law enforcement and fire employees, and state troopers and inspectors would be exempt from these changes.

169 Catholic bishops defend the rights of poor Mexican farm workers:

MILWAUKEE – Quoting Popes Benedict XVI and John Paul II, Milwaukee Archbishop Jerome E. Listecki issued a statement Feb. 16 that came down squarely in favor of workers’ rights in the face of efforts by Wisconsin’s new governor to restrict those rights.

“Hard times do not nullify the moral obligation each of us has to respect the legitimate rights of workers,” Archbishop Listecki said.

“Every union, like every other economic actor, is called to work for the common good, to make sacrifices when required, and to adjust to new economic realities,” he said.

“However, it is equally a mistake to marginalize or dismiss unions as impediments to economic growth.”

Archbishop Listecki was responding to efforts by new Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, a Republican, to push through measures restricting the rights of unions in a special session of the state legislature.

The bill would strip most government workers – at the state, county and local levels, including teachers – of nearly all collective bargaining rights. The only exceptions would be for police, firefighters and the state patrol. Unions would have to gain approval in a public referendum to seek pay raises higher than the consumer price index.

Collective bargaining units are required to take annual votes to maintain certification as a union.  Employers would be prohibited from collecting union dues and members of collective bargaining units would not be required to pay dues.

This is the crux of the matter. The union bosses would gladly screw their membership on the retirement and health insurance but on these they will not budge. Enacting the above would be the death of the government unions and therefore the end of their own phoney baloney jobs.

I wonder if the unions have figured out that they have made the mistake of backing the Governor and the WI Republicans into a corner. Walker can't back down; if he does, the government unions will own the state forever, there will never, ever be any concessions from them on any topic, and it will be mob rule from this point forward.

"Badgering in Wisconsin" - we knew this moment was coming and it is just the beginning of the beginning backlash against unions.

Wisconsin sure has put a negative spotlight on the teachers unions and unfortunately teachers in general. My opinion - public service unions are bankrupting cities, counties, and states across our Nation (mostly because of absurd and bloated retirement and health care plans). In addition, tenure is allowing low performing teachers to remain in the workforce. An example of this idiocy – “Middle School teacher Amanda Valente was awarded the Teacher of the Year in NJ at an award ceremony. Due to the budget constraints from the fiscal crisis affecting New Jersey, Valente was among the 25 teachers fired”. Tenure allowed the Teacher of the Year to be terminated - Unbelievable!!

185 I don't know either.  The Church Administration...like most government administrations...has thoroughly screwed things up.  My relationship with God has little to do with the Church, and nothing at all with lib apologists for child abuse.

188 184 -- I think they let the pedophilia go on for waay too long because the older priests probably didn't understand it, and the "Lavender Mafia" of younger priests probably looked the other way, because they didn't want to risk the possible attention on them.

190 Hi guys, I'm a lurker from Wisconsin.  I love this site, but I don't usually comment because I feel like I'd be butting in on an over heard conversation.  I think I can explain the reason I'm not wearing any red if I make it to Madison tomorrow.

The red shirts are because of a cause on facebook called "Stop the Attack".  On Sunday my husband's facebook friends started asking people to show their support for state workers by wearing red.  By Monday it was an official cause.

With any luck, they'll all be taken out so we can see how the episode's monster works, and let Kirk, Spock, and McCoy take care of business.

... but didn't Obama and Ayers work against the teachers union in Chicago ?

So this isn't a stand on principle .. it's purely a money/power play

197 The tactics of the unions and Dem State Senators in WI shows without any doubt that the unions and Dems do no believe in democracy. And that is a meme the R's in WI need to be pushing every chance they get because it is guaranteed to outrage the WI people who voted the Dems out even more than they already are.

198 Yeah, shocking that Mr. Post-PartisanTM would be insinuating himself into this entirely state-level issue, right?

The WI GOP and the RNC should have ads up tomorrow along the lines of "While hard-working Wisconsins are struggling to get by in this suck-fest economy WI Senate Democrats are taking a long weekend living it up out of state, while the DNC and other out-of-state interests are organizing illegal strikes by public employees who are using that "new tone" we've heard so much about..."

These ads write themselves.  But once again it looks like the GOP is ready to bring a wet noodle to a street fight.

199 I posted this at PJM earlier, but perhaps some morons might also be interested in a little observation from Battleground Wisconsin: Today after work, I went grocery shopping and ran a few other errands near a busy intersection in Shorewood WI. Shorewood is a well-to-do, lily white and generally very liberal suburb of Milwaukee. There was a small band of high school students, in obviously high spirits because of their extra long weekend, jumping around and waving signs saying “Support Worker Rights.” They were accompanied by a few older people, teachers I assume, holding similar signs. This is what struck me: it was rush hour, plenty of cars were going past and during the course of 15 or 20 minutes or so, I didn’t hear one single honk of support from any passing cars. This is a ‘burb where there is no shortage of Volvos with Obama/Biden and “Co-Exist” bumper stickers. I remember the anti-war rallies during the Bush years. The honks and cheers of support and encouragement the “Bush = Hitler” protesters got were constant. “Walker = Hitler” doesn’t seem to be going over nearly as well. The silence of the rush hour crowd was very noticable. I don’t blame the kids for being clueless because they are kids, but their elders are another matter. Did any of those bozos pause to consider that even a wussy Volvo-driving Obama voter, driving home after a long, hard work week, might have glanced at those signs and thought “Worker rights? Hey, I’m a worker too – been busting my butt all week. Had to scramble to find sitters for the kids today and it made me late for work. Nobody will stand on the corner waving signs if I get laid off, or take a pay cut. Screw these people.” Some otherwise pretty apolitical friends were furious at having to take two days off to watch their kids. They’ve become big Scott Walker fans. Keep making friends and influencing people, lefties, it’s working so well! Really, if pro-union protesters can't attract a bunch of cheering, honking libtard supporters in libtard Shorewood of all places, you know Walker's winning this one.

200 Technically, a (large) street fight is just about all u-no-hoo needs to declare martial law.  There is no longer any congressional oversight or approval needed for that declaration.  How bad does it have to get in the streets?  I'm sure the guy riding the camel, swinging the bullwhip would do it.

201 Obama went all in, because this is his only chance to hold WI in 2012. All his support hinges on the union machines cranking out the votes and running the GOTV effort. Democrats rely on our tax dollars to fund their campaigns, and in this economy, tax payers figured out that's what the stimulus was. Now, it's called "investment," but it doesn't matter much with a Republican House. If it isn't put down in WI, this revolt will spread throughout the Rust Belt. Walker is doing the whole nation a favor by standing up to these union thugs.

202 "ran a few other errands near a busy intersection in Shorewood WI."

That must have been the intersection of Capitol Dr. and Oakland Ave. I drove by there about 3:30 on Friday. The clueless demonstrators got a few honks, although not very many and none from me.

Shorewood is a curious place: Lots of Obama bumper stickers, and close enough to UWM to get actual Marxists of various stripes.
