Obama Gets Tough: Hey, Iran, Could We Have Our Drone Back Now?
— Ace

That'll work.

Video below. Obama says "We have asked for it back [emphasis actually in the original; he stresses that word].... We'll see how the Iranians respond."

The Iranians have said "We'll get that right out to you, just give us a chance to put it in a box and get the correct postage."

“No one returns the symbol of aggression to the party that sought secret and vital intelligence related to the national security of a country,” Salami said.

That sounds different in the original Persian, though.

Reportedly, Obama was presented with three plans to recover and/or (more likely) destroy the drone, but he rejected them all.

Because he felt this could be "perceived" as an act of war. Um, it's our property. It landed, I'm guessing, in open space (odds are -- the world is mostly open space).

32 I'm glad to see your perspective on this, Ace.

This whole RQ-170 mess is mind-fucking to me. I've heard around my time at SAIS that the low-observable project proceeding the Tier-II+/III- split was divided in the late-1990s because they wanted a better mapping between the system and the air defense capability of the nation being observed. At that time they were looking at protocols for F-117A bombing of a downed wreckage. These options should have been ready to go.

This just exemplifies the apologetic and weak leadership and foreign policy of Barack Obama.

Stop fucking apologizing, you can almost hear him -- "Well, it did land on their ground by mistake..."

163 I'm going to repost my Iran rant from last week, maybe I'll make it a macro:

See, this is one of the things that make me so made at our political establishment.  Iran is not a great power.  Obama had that right when he said that Iran is a little country.  Their tyranny exists because we let it.  Iran can't even refine enough gasoline to run their cars.  They exist by our sufferance, and I think we have suffered enough thank you very much.

Knock out all their power plants, declare a blockade, seize their oil and wealth everywhere within out reach, air drop weapons into the countryside for anyone who wants to make trouble.

We need not every set a boot on their dirt to reduce them to irrelevancy.

They've given plenty enough casus belli to do any and all of these.

I would think that in most cases (probably including this one) you should really make sure you blow the thing up. The argument that it would be an act of war is beyond inane. Just flying the thing within their borders was already an act of war.

On the bright side, the hard part of making stealthy aircraft is the producibility. Even if you know exactly where every single molecule is in it's design, the question becomes "Can you make it?" For Iran (and maybe every other country), the answer is almost certainly "no".

And once you get past "Can you make it?" you move onto the even bigger challenge: "Can you make it cheaply enough for it to be worth it?"

192 Second Look at Bob Dole Committee: Uriah Heep

Take a look at this footage - Jennifer is talking about the source - and they use the term "tethered"?

Thanks for the video. Jen Griffin hits exactly on the point: after an accident like this you need to start thinking in terms of minimax: minimize the maximum possible loss.

Right now, the loss is huge as Jen said. They have the physical computers, sensor packages, I/O and data-link hardware -- which means they (ie. Russia, China) have unlimited time to work at gaining access to the systems via side-channel attacks around our encryption and other security protocols. All systems have flaws, they are strong head-on, but given time and perseverence a team will discover flaws and go around. The key is not giving them the opportunity.

They have the airframe, they can study everything and the design choices down to why they used the RADAR screen over the intake verse an S-curve baffle as on the B2. What frequencies the screen's openings and materials are optimized to deflect, etc. Ugh...

A special ops raid removes everything, but there is large risk if our men die or are captured. The optimal at this point is to retask a a Tomahawk or CALCM raid and destroy the airframe; they will get material samples, but it's a risk free strategy. The fact that Obama passed on this demonstrates, IMHO, just how much of an apologist fuck-up he is.

I sincerely hope a Romney or Perry talks about this at the up coming debate. Mitt entitled his book, No Apology. Knock that fucker out.

The real significance of the lost drone is that the US is serious about reconnoitering Iran in detail, probably to find its nuclear installations and defenses.  The decision to violate Iranian territory and possibly lose a piece of top secret hardware is a Very Big Decision.  The USA does not make such decisions casually.  The President has to sign off on that.

It's a sign that the US is seriously considering war against Iran.

It's naive of Obama to ask for our drone back.  You didn't see Eisenhower asking for Francis Gary Power's U-2 back from the Soviets.  OF COURSE they're gonna keep it.  Castro didn't give back Major Rudolf Anderson's U-2 when it was shot down during the Cuban Missile Crisis.  At the very least, the drone will be displayed in a propaganda museum.  More likely, it will be traded to Russia and China for much needed technical support for their atom bomb program.
