— Gabriel Malor Oh, yes, Mr. President, it really is a new era.
The amendment, offered by Rep. Steve Scalise (R-La.), specifically targets Obama’s “climate czar” by blocking funding for the assistant to the president for energy and climate change, the position's official title. The amendment would block funding for the 'czars' through the end of the fiscal year, when the spending bill would run out. The underlying bill also includes a provision to block funding for the position."I think this sends a strong signal to the president that we are tired of him running this shadow government, where they have got these czars that are literally circumventing the accountability and scrutiny that goes with Senate confirmation," Scalise said after the vote.
It also defunds the czars for ObamaCare implementation, green jobs, auto policy, urban affairs, TARP, Gitmo, and diversity at the FCC. Of course, this is the same spending bill that Obama has already said he would veto. Anyone else suspect that he'll be even more bent out of shape by having cronies denied jobs than by the $100 billion in cuts?
By the way, the vote for this was 249-171, which means that several Democrats voted for it. Instead of calling it a bipartisan vote, though the Hill headlines it "the GOP voted..." and fails to mention the Democrats anywhere in the article. Okay, I guess it's not that much of a new era after all.
UPDATE: Also on the chopping block: Last night, in another bipartisan vote (though with only two Democrats), the House voted to forbid the FCC from using any funds to implement its December net neutrality order.
FCC issued the order in December even though Congress rejected net neutrality legislation and the DC Circuit Court of Appeals already rejected previous FCC net neutrality rules. It was typical Obama Administration end run around the Constitution.

16 We've been talking, recently, about "The Republicans" going all wobbly on us. I think it's time to re-assess that and keep it to "The Senate Republicans" when we talk about lack of intestinal fortitude.
The House Tea members had to threaten revolt to get the leadership to try to ask for budget cuts which would amount to 25 days of-- not spending-- but merely deficit spending.
These little jabs are great, but they're still chickenshits talking about chicken feed.

Fair point Admiral - I was thinking the same - but really these czars are not well named. In this administration it would be much more appropriate to call them commisars. And getting rid of the commisars is indeed a great first step toward getting rid of the commies.

Everyone knows that the people referred to as the "Federalists" believed in a strong central government. But what most people are not aware of is that as part of that they also believed in a central bank (the Fed) that would nationalize the money supply and provide funds for the federal government. In addition, those funds would be backed by taxing the population to provide more funds.
The object of these taxes and funds was not simply to perform the actions described under the Constitution. Under their theory of government they believed the central government should fund canals, railroads, and roads along with other project all designed to "improve" the infrastructure of the nation and the living conditions of the republic. Roads and railroads may be justified under the Constitution under the heading of "postal roads" but the other stuff was not.
When the Whigs took over as an official party they assumed the mantle of the Federalists and they called this system "The American System" as opposed to the British name for it of Mercantilism. (or at least that is what this author says. I don't agree with calling it Mercantilism even though the overwhelming majority of these projects were done to benefit business).
The problem with the way it was implemented then, even as it is being implemented now, is that the funds were proffered to cronies, political supporters, and in some cases outright to the politicians family. In other words it was graft and corruption pure and simple.
It was so bad that when the Whigs were blocked at the federal level by the Presidents of the Andrew Jackson ilk, they got it done at the State level where they controlled. One of the primary States where this occurred was Illinois. They went into this American System big time. The public money was squandered and the State was driven to the point of bankruptcy. Gee, some things never change.
Anyway, it is amazing to learn that history remains the same.

We can't do much except incrementally. Thus be aware of pending and proposed legislation and write/phone/email your Congresspersons and Senators constantly (barrage them if I may use a graphic military term, or you could inundate them if you are more pacifistic). Start participating in and supporting your local TEA party. Vote in local and State elections even if it is for dog catcher, but be sure the one you vote for understands the Constitution (even if the dog catcher cannot repeal Roe v Wade single handedly).
We may only have one shot at this, so this is not the time for summer soldiers!

Our federal housing policy is doomed to
repeat the mistakes of the past because there is a deep contradiction at the
center of it.
The irreconcilable difference is that the government wants housing
to be:
A. affordable, and B. an investment that provides real returns.
You cannot have both.

The problem with the governments side of the housing equation is that they think EVERYONE should have a house and that the banks should loan them the money whether they can afford the loan or not.
That hasn't changed. It is called the magic beans theory of economics.

Whenever a politician sees a way to get his hand in the public till, government degrades to the detriment of the people. This is a primary reason why term limits should be mandatory so you get the bastards out before they can learn to steal effectively! The thrill of spending other people's money for your own ends is a powerful stimulant.
Rush made an excellent point on a related area yesterday. Namely, that the socialist pols are supporting retirement and health insurance plans for union members suing tax dollars stolen from taxpayers that can't afford (or access) the equivalent quality of retirement or health care. Of course, these working taxpayers are too busy trying to conduct themselves with dignity and earn their own way to be rioting in the streets of Wisconsin (or disturbing the peace outside the home of an elected official. It does seem that the time is approaching that sharpened pitchforks and well-oiled torches might be nice to have handy.
I am looking up the OSHA regs on pitchfork usage and the EPA regs on torches and will post the results later.

Ask him to sign a petition that he supports the EPA specific recommendations for handling the breakage of a CFL in the home?
Ask him if the TSA should be expanded to search all trash being sent to a landfill to ensure that no one is (perish the thought) improperly disposing of a CFL, thus creating a mercury laden hot spot that will inevitably seep into the ground water.

In case you haven't looked at the local real estate listing lately, there is lot of housing that is much more affordable than it used to be, so part one of the program is working according to plan. If you don't require positive returns, then part two of the plan is working as well.

Or, our problem with politicians and graft is that no matter the issue, it is abused as a means to plunder wealth, regardless of the generation and chronology.
Alexander Hamilton certainly persuaded George Washington in matters of finance. But neither John Adams nor Thomas Jefferson chose to ignore what would inevitably result from such a national economy based upon speculation, directed by a federal economic autocracy.
Politicians stump on "Egyptian Sale" (promise any lie that fools want to believe) whole cloth propaganda for votes by promising whatever people want, be it a house/mortgage for every American or a chicken in every pot. Along the historical performance from the likes of JPMorgan et al., that doesn't mean what home buyers assume to be, a "right" to own a home. It's a lure, one of many lures, in the ponzi banking games. Historically, JPMorgan never "lost money" on mortgages of homes it financed, confiscating properties and turning out bankrupted families during the 1930s Great Depression, to do with the property as JPMorgan wanted. Little, local banks are not being referenced. Rather, this focus remains on the largest gone global banking institutions, and specifically the perverse interests of the Federal Reserve.

Does anyone remember Obama excoriating the guaranteed secured bondholders for being greedy because they were unwilling to sign off on the GM bankruptcy deal that basically screwed them for pennies on the dollar while rewarding the unions by giving them GM?

Never could understand why the Repubs didn't beat the drum over the bond holders (with an actual financial (skin in the game) interest) being screwed over by Barry in spite of a century or more of established contract law.
Oh wait, I forgot they're Republicans.

The illegal wildcat strike by teachers in Wisconsin has spread to Michigan, Minnesota, and Ohio.
Stuart Varney on FNC is claiming that DNC head Tim Kaine and the White House have been lobbying teacher's unions outside of Wisconsin to take part in spreading the strike outside of that state's borders.

Mu'Ammar Al-Qadhafi on Democracy, Tyrants, Campaigns, America and Obama the Muslim American National
"I was fooling you to get your votes." Allah willing, it will turn out that this was merely elections propaganda. Obama said he would turn Jerusalem into the eternal capital of the Israelis. This indicates that our brother Obama is ignorant of international politics, and is not familiar with the Middle East conflict. We thought he would say: "I have decided that if I win, I will monitor the Dimona nuclear plant, in order to find out about nuclear bombs, and other WMD's in Israel's possession. We expected him to make such a decision. He undoubtedly had this in his mind, when he talked about Iran and its nuclear program, he undoubtedly had Dimona in mind. But when he was thinking of Dimona, he undoubtedly had the fate of former President Kennedy on his mind as well. Kennedy decided to monitor the Dimona nuclear plant. He insisted on doing so in order to determine whether or not it produces nuclear weapons. The Israelis refused but he insisted. This crisis was resolved with the resignation of Ben-Gurion. He resigned so he would not have to agree to the monitoring of the Dimona plant. And he gave the green light for the killing of Kennedy. Kennedy was killed because he insisted on the monitoring of the Dimona plant. This image was undoubtedly on Obama's mind. He undoubtedly wanted to talk about this, but decided not to. We expected him to say: "If I win, I will implement the one-state solution, the Isratine which appears in Qadhafi's White Book." This idea constitutes the final, deep-rooted, and historic solution. It is impossible to establish two midget-states in this area. What kind of country is only 15km deep? The so-called Israel is only 15km deep. What kind of country is this? There are five million Palestinians [Philistines] there. We expected Obama to say: "I've decided to return millions of Palestinian refugees to the land of Palestine, from which they were expelled in 1948 and 1967." This is the "Change" the peoples applaud, the change that the Americann people -- and the black American people -- want. We expected him to say: "I will strive for the independence and the unity of the Kurdish nation. This nation must take its place under the sun in the Middle East." The Kurdish nation is torn apart, tormented and persecuted, and is colonized by everyone. He should have supported it instead of supporting the collaborators while sacrificing the future of the Kurdish nation. This is "Change". The thing we fear most is that the black man suffers from an inferiority complex. This is dangerous. If our brother Obama feels that because he is black he doesn't have the RIGHT TO RULE AMERICA, this would be a disaster because such a feeling would make him behave whiter than white, and go to an extreme in his persecution and degradation of the blacks. We say to him: Brother, the whites and blacks in America are equal. They are all immigrants. America belongs neither to the whites nor to the blacks. America belongs to its original inhabitants, the native indigenous tribes. Whereas, both the whites and blacks that immigrated to America are equal. Obama has the right to hold his head high and say, "I am a partner in America. This is my land as much as it is yours. It is not my land, it is not yours either. It is the land of the aborigines. You are immigrants and so are we." We still hope this black man will take pride in his African and Islamic identity, and in his faith, that he knows he has rights in America, and that he will change America from evil to good, and that America will establish relations that will serve it well with other peoples, especially the Arabs.
*Btw, this youtube was pulled after Obama's election, and was unavailable online when Obama's circumstances of birth and Muslim identity were being denied from the Oval Office, and now reinstated having deleted an initial statement of the speech wherein Qadhafi boasted of his personal coordination of Middle Eastern immense financial contributions to Obama's potus campaign funds. It isn't as if Qadhafi didn't speak aloud what was being thought. Given this exposition, exactly how did Obama's inaugural era Cairo speech answer Muslim expectations? And study the alignments and diversions of interests as Obama's administration sabotages the very Muslim world leaders who financed an immense portion of his '08 Potus campaign, silencing those through official removal and threats of annihilation via bloody revolutions.

Minnesota, OTOH, will cave to the strikers because Mark "Brave Sir Robin" Dayton is their Governor.

I'm not a big fan of investing in bonds because there's such a limited upside but for a safe investment they used to be very good. I'm sure Monty has weighed in on this multiple times but it can't be overstated: The damage that the jugeared imbecile did to the bond market by fucking over the contractual obligations to the bondholders was huge. When we get out from under the reign of this monumental dumbfuck, I expect large portions of factual textbooks on economics to highlight just what an unprecedented clusterfuck this was to bondholders and how long it took for the market for bonds to recover.

A mass sick-out like this is considered to be a wildcat strike, which is illegal under US labor law since the 1930s. There's ample precedent of courts saying that wildcat strikers can be legally fired for participating in such a strike.

As far as replacements go, I think there's actually a decent supply of teachers who would not only like these jobs, but LOVE to screw over the teacher's union.
One of our fellow Morons was in a thread yesterday talking about how she and a bunch of other teachers got screwed by the tenure-track professors and the regular teachers when it came to job security, meaning they all got canned while the other two groups stayed employed. She said she's working in retail while trying to find an open position, meaning she'd jump at the chance to be a "scab".

They're abusing sick leave. They should be ordered to return to work and anyone who doesn't should be fired for violating the sick leave policy and for insubordination. You want to protest, fine, do it on your own time or take vacation leave. If not, get your butt into work and do your job.

Consider the ripple effect the school shutdowns are having on the parents of these children who suddenly have no place to go on a weekday:
Mom or Dad has to take one of their precious personal or vacation days to stay home with Junior.(You know, those time off hours we guard like precious jewels - in the private sector, since we don't get the entire freaking summer off?) Not only is home life now upended, but the parent who stays home leaves work at the office undone - thereby affecting their company's productivity. So these public unioninzed teachers, in their orgasm of narcissism and selfishness, are biting the very hand that feeds them. That's what happens when one has lived in a protected and enabled bubble for so long, one loses sight of the big picture.
Resentment against public school teachers? Damn straight if I was a WI parent who had to deal with the effects of the teachers' monumental temper tantrum, I'd be resentful.

The latest plan I've heard is to have the WI Assembly declare that the WI Senate has illegally ended their session due to the Dem Senators fleeing the capitol. Under WI law, it's unconstitutional for one house to adjourn without the consent of the other.
This would allow them to set demands for the Dems in question to come back under penalty of losing their seats in the Senate if they refuse to do so.

No, it didn't cause a lot of feelings of Solidarity (!) and yes, a lot of us would love to get a little payback (plus get a real job again -- retail? try gas station or pizza delivery or just not finding any work at all -- lots of businesses have closed; the ones still open aren't hiring, not even the temp services).

I think we've got more proof that Obama was sick the day they taught law in law school.
The White House sent a request to Judge Vinson, who declared ObamaCare unconstitutional, asking that he require that the 26 states involved still follow the law in question.
“[A] contrary understanding would threaten serious harm to many Americans currently benefiting from provisions of the Affordable Care Act that are already in effect and would significantly interfere with defendants’ statutory duty to implement the Act as Congress directed,” the Justice Department wrote in its court filing.

I am pretty sure you do not need a quorum to adjourn, fact unless someone calls a quorum call, I know you don't need one.
How dissolving the General Assembly would help the cause is hard for me to figure. The House can not tell the Senate what to do, at least they can't in NC. The governor can not call an election and I don't think WI is a recall state.
Regardless, it would serve no purpose. Let them try and sit out the session. They can't do it. I give them til Monday. These guys will have to go home this weekend, shit there is probably some dirty Scandi ice fishing tournament they want to be in.

On unemployment:
Unemployment, as measured by Gallup without seasonal adjustment, hit 10.0% in mid-February -- up from 9.8% at the end of January.
The percentage of part-time workers who want full-time work worsened considerably in mid-February, increasing to 9.6% of the workforce from 9.1% in January.
Underemployment, in which Gallup combines part-time workers wanting full-time work with the U.S. unemployment rate, surged in mid-February to 19.6% -- mostly as a result of the sharp increase in those working part time but wanting full-time work. Underemployment now stands at basically the same place as it did a year ago (19.8%).
I told my son a couple of years ago that if unemployment ever hit 10%, people would be in the streets. Boy was I wrong. Instead, its the fully employed gov't workers who are in the streets.

I own the series on DVD, so that's not a problem. I want Science for two reasons: one the science geekery at the end of the show that they'll be doing (read the link for more on that) and in the hope that it does well enough that someone actually revives the series: preferably not Fox. Or NBC. So, yeah, basically CBS or ABC.

She rarely seems to use her legal background, which is frustrating. It's more like sitting down with my auntie and chatting. I guess it's kind of a girlie site.
I was thinking just yesterday how boring the blogosphere has been lately. I check Jawa and Blackfive and Patterico and neoneocon, but haven't really been that taken by the content lately. (Not a fan of Worthington or whatever his name is over at Patterico. I prefer Patterico.) Unions love to threaten children in order to get their way ... and they love to threaten children just for fun at other times.

Generally speaking, when you cut a chicken's head off, gut it and pluck it clean in front of the hen house, the other chickens pay attention.
BTW, chickens are capable of running around a bit with no head. Their hearts keep beating hours after they have been gutted. I know this is gruesome, but the analogy to unions is the same. They are primates, but their nervous system is actually reptillian.

Of course, the other part of that is to turn it around completely: threaten to declare the school-year null and void (don't give the State Achievement test- whatever it is, don't accept any credits, etc) and that everyone will have to repeat the school-year.

Considering the history of vote fraud in Wisconsin over the past decade or so, I'd say they *need* the most restrictive Voter ID laws in the nation.
Students voting multiple times, the kid of a Dem member of the House slashing the tires of GOP GOTV vans, bribing homeless people with smokes to vote Dem, Milwaukee regularly requesting more ballots than there are people living within the city, etc., are all examples of why the state's voting needs to be under heavy scrutiny.

Actually, I'm not so sure. I'm getting the sense that most of the private citizens in Wisconsin are none-too-happy with the Teachers Union and with the Democrats in the legislature. They may, yet, pay a very heavy political price.
Indeed, what we may be learning is that, not only would Congressional Republicans not pay a great political price if they shut down the Federal Government, but might even be hailed as heroes, of a sort.
If you're just talking about the MBM, yours is a good summary, though.

Looked up the bill, and the typical arguments being made against it. Check out this tripe
But under the bill, Flowers would almost certainly need a Wisconsin photo ID, something that itself would require his certified birth certificate and Social Security card and a trip to the DMV.
Would Flowers be likely to go through all that just to vote? “If I had to go wait in the DMV line, no,” he said.
Ergo, disenfranchisement. And it would apply to anyone who is similarly young, transient and more likely to be a Democrat —whether they are out-of-state UW students or the down and out.
This latter group is of particular interest to Steve Schooler, executive director at Porchlight, which provides housing and other services to the homeless.
“This will have a real impact,” he said of the Republicans’ bill, “because in order to get an ID, you need a birth certificate and these are not cheap anymore, particularly from states like California.”
You can reasonably argue that the barriers to voting under the bill arenÂ’t very high.
But then Constitutional rights apply even if you arenÂ’t so organized as to keep a certified copy of your birth certificate lying around, or you go to college out of state, or you donÂ’t have a permanent home. We donÂ’t apply such litmus tests to the right to free speech or the right to trial by oneÂ’s peers, so why apply it (as a practical matter) to voting?
In short, why are my demographic brethren so keen on messing with the Constitution?

I don't think Egypt has a say in who they can let through the canal, except in a war situation. This is no big deal. How do you sink an Iranian ship sitting in a canal with hundreds of miles of sand around it?
With any fucking thing you want, they are sitting ducks.

She makes $158,000 (I'm not sure if that's a 9-month or 12-month salary), so I think she can afford it. I would hope that the effect is scaled to someone's salary. $10K is a lot for a secretary, not so much for a full professor.
A lot of my (former) colleagues in academe have been dealing with these sorts of benefits issues - and pay freezes and furloughs - for several years now. Times are tough. No reason why some should be insulated from it more than others.
