— DrewM A few minutes from now at the White House.
Why didn't he think of this sooner?
CNN says Harry Reid announced that he's filing cloture for his plan, so he can start moving that through the Senate early Sunday morning. It's been awhile since the Senate has actually done something, I wonder if they had to look up how to actually do this stuff in the rule book.
Meanwhile, GDP felt right the hell off the cliff.
GDP grew at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of just 1.3 percent in the second quarter, lower than expected, according to an advance estimate released by the Bureau of Economic Analysis on Friday. U.S. stock futures fell after the estimate was released.GDP growth for the first half of the year was the weakest since the recession ended, the Associated Press reported. Real GDP was revised sharply downward from 1.9 percent in the first quarter to 0.4 percent.
Say it with me kids....UNEXPECTEDLY.
BREAKING: Obama says it's now clear any solution must be bi-partisan and be able to pass both the House and the Senate.
This is why he was ConLaw professor lecturer.
Comes out for some hybrid of Reid-McConnell.
Says he will support a smart and balanced (taxes!) mechanism to hold the government accountable. Is he signalling a shift on the two step increase in the debt ceiling?

What they want is Boehner to pass something...anything, then the Senate guts it, puts in their version and then sends it back to the House where the Dems, miraculously, vote for it.
That is why it needs to be voted down in the House first. We'll never get anything close to Boehner's bill. We don't need anything that Reid can use as a shell.

If they did bother to look it up in the rule book, they'd see that the Senate is not allowed to intiate this bill. And wrapping it in a shell of another House-initiated bill is beyond bullshit. If Boehner had any brains or balls, he'd say that the Senate shouldn't bother working on originating an un-Constitutional bill to be presented to the House. but ... Boehner will just cry, instead.

I compete fiercely with sealed bids on infrastructure projects. I risk it daily. The waste and ineffiency of the gov't is sometimes a millstone that can sink a given project's profit or a boon that can triple the profit. In the end, macroeconomic theory prevails and about 10% is the average gross profit.

There's no good solution. If Reid's piece of trash is resisted, then the spin will be that the House is endangering the country. If Boehners' bill passes, then it gets pointed to if/when the rating tanks, which it should, even if we raise the debt ceiling yet again. If we somehow don't lose the AAA rating, then Obama gets the credit. And most of the Republicans know this.

Trust me, I know the issues. I held a contracting warrant for a while. I've also been a Federal contractor.
The FAR is 2 feet thick. Thank Congress for the inefficiency baked into the contracting cake.

I honestly want Boehner's bill to pass the House just for the sole purpose of being proven right. Vain, I know.
But when it passes and gets stone-walled in the Senate, then we will be left with the same exact proposition as if it didn't pass. August 2nd, or accept some bullshit Harry Reid deal.
Posted by: Rich at July 29, 2011 07:04 AM (wnGI4)
Let me be clear. I have looked at all of the plans that are out there. The GOP Plan. Harry Reid's Plan to have a Plan. Of those, my Plan to plan on having a Plan is the best because it's the planniest with more planning behind it than the other plans.
Since it does not exist even in an imagined reality, it is the best plan for dealing with the imaginary fiction that is the discussion that we are going to actually cut government spending. That's part of the Plan. Conceived so many years ago by Cloward and Piven.
So, my fellow Americans, no matter if you're Hawaiian, Mexican or Kenyan, take the blue pill. Only this way will our economy continue to show the improvement we've seen since 2009 and the increased employment that the stimulus has brought about.
Together we can make America the place that my Father dreamed of, the place my Mother wanted, and the place that my Friends Bernadette and Bill have worked so hard to make.
We can have that America that my Pastor of over 20 years envisions. Not God Bless America! Your Chickens. Have Come Home. To Roost.

Ant that is pretty much what Barky just said in this latest speech. Again.Which really amounts to "I won."
Posted by: Retread at July 29, 2011 07:05 AM (G+7cD)
Wut?
Reid's and Boehner's bills are similar enough that they can tweak Reid's a little (and probably add whatever sucks most about McConnell's) and Boehner can fairly say it "incorporates all the essential principles" (or whatever) of his plan and cram it through the House with however many Democrat votes he has to beg Pelosi to trade for uh future considerations (in district-drawing, I'd guess).
Everybody wins!
Posted by: oblig. at July 29, 2011 07:06 AM (xvZW9)
but Boehner went ahead without the votes and got embarrassed.
Which shows what an inept idiot he is. What sort of fool doesn't have his bills up and ready to go BEFORE going into negotiations? What sort of idiot Weeper brings a vote to the floor on a MUST-PASS bill (by his own estimation) that doesn't have the friggin votes before he presents it? WTF?
Boehner did nothing between the time of the CRs/Budget battle (wwhich included MANY of the same problems as we are being presented with now) in order to prepare for this. He played golf with Barky and generally pissed away the time, only to go into suicidal negotiations with the equivalent of the palestinians without any concept of where he was going or what he was authorized to bargain away. What an ass.

President Barack ObamaÂ’s speech to the nation Monday night was highly disturbing. Because read carefully, it reveals a president wildly divorced from the fundamental realities of the nation he is supposed to be leading.

I am a government contractor and let me tell you; from my vantage point, the waste and ineffiency of the federal bureaucracy is jaw dropping.
You're right. And I'm a Fed and from my vantage point the amount of money contractors rake in is jaw-dropping.
It's a double-edged sword.
Posted by: Sean Bannion at July 29, 2011 10:47 AM (sbV1u)
It's not a double edged sword. Its because its the Feds that make it so expensive to contract. The Feds do the contracting and do it wastefully.

Because the US dollar is the foundation of the global financial systems. To put us at less than AAA is to re-evaluate the whole system at less than AAA (which is certainly how it is, but singling out the US for a downgrade is pure insanity). The US dollar occupies a very distinguished position that many tend to forget or dismiss.
This is also why hyperinflation in the US dollar will be far, far worse than anytime it's happened before. The US dollar will not be able to recover (or be substituted or replaced) like other nations with their minor currencies have been able. When the dollar goes down, it's going to be something truly historical.
In the end, the US is the last country whose credit rating should be re-evaluated. of course, this whole scene started just becausee Warren Buffett's Moody's decided to try and interject itself on Barky's side in this farcical "negotiation".

I made that point in a post further down. The Federal Aquisition Regulation governs contracting and it's why it's so frickin' expensive for the government.
Congress governs the size and shape of the FAR. Everything in there has its origin in Congress. If you want to stop the $900 toilet seats, then you fix the FAR.
To fix the FAR, you have to fix Congress.

Yes, but Fed employees. in general, get most excellent benefits and basically can't get fired or laid off even if they piss on their boss's desk! I get a lousy 401k the chance of termination if there isn't sufficient work, while many Fed employees get to make up work (like evaluating 1000 mpg automobiles and trucks, estimating and unexpectedly republishing economic data, falsifying temperature data, and making plans for high speed rail).

Real GDP was revised sharply downward from 1.9 percent in the first quarter to 0.4 percent.
As an engineer, I'd be freaking SOOOO FIRED if my calculations were off by 475% fng percent!! How much of that GDP is government spending? Yup, we are in deep recession again.

Oh no - that would mean we can't take on any new government debt. Oh no.
Oh no - the Chinese would have nowhere to deposit - at a profit - the Billions they have gotten from us. They would have to buy US goods and services instead. That would rev up the US economy. Oh no.
Oh no - other foreign countries would hate us because they would no longer be able to use US treasury bonds as a savings account, and would - like China - be forced to trade dollars for US goods and services. There goes the US GDP up again. Oh no.
Oh no. Oh no. The sky is falling.
Seriously people there is a difference between default and debt limit. These two are used interchangeably by the MSM and they are not the same thing.
Default means that you are unable to make payments you are supposed to make. Hitting the debt limit means that you are unable to take on any more debt. You can be in default before hitting a debt limit or you can hit a debt limit and not be in default which is what will happen on August 2nd.
What, has the government run out of ink for the printing presses - is that why they won't be able to send granny a SS check?
Note that every Kabuki Theater bill you have seen from anyone includes raising the debt ceiling. WHY?
As I have demonstrated in my previous posts - in a fiat money system borrowing is completely useless and gains the government zilch. Here is an idea: lets stop borrowing.
