Obama's Jobs Council.
It Works But Not Like You Think. [ArthurK]

— Open Blogger

President Obama says he's 100% focused these days on creating jobs. So why is he taking advice from a bunch of CEOs whose companies have been shedding jobs for years?

...

It's little wonder, then, that the list of immediate must-do, job-creating ideas the council came up with - and outlined in a Monday op-ed signed by GE's Jeff Immelt and AmEx's Ken Chenault - is so uninspiring.

More money to retrain workers? More tax dollars retrofitting commercial buildings to boost energy efficiency? More government loans passed out by the Small Business Administration?

The writer doesn't get it. This council is doing JUST what Obama (and the council) wants. The routine work of Crony Capitalism. The average guy assumes big business is in love with capitalism and free enterprise. NO! That's what they loved while they were BECOMING a big business. Now that they're on top, they're happy to make deals with the govt. to help them out, keep them on top and make it tougher for smaller companies to knock 'em down a peg.

Some people might think that Crony Capitalism is just capitalism with a touch of corruption. Oh, if it were only that. It's just another flavor of socialism! Central Planning? Check. Redistribution? check. Look at those Job Creation examples in the above quote!

(here's a useful definition of Socialism)

A more complete definition of socialism incorporates two criteria: The first is that socialism entails the public provision of non-public goods. The second is the use of central planning to implement that policy.

It's not like Crony Capitalism is some scourge we've never seen before. It's that the more power the Federal Govt. accumulates, the more opportunity CC has to screw up the economy.

1 Job Creation
I think it's going to require another 800billion of your tax money to make it happen...so take it from those who pulled the car out of the ditch  and sent it over the cliff...bend over

2 The primary point of regulation is to ensure that any business operates the government approved way.  The big businesses have already learned to whom they should contribute and thus are well on their way to doing business the right way.  An upstart new entry into a free marketplace is unbound by such formal rules, might upset the applecart, and must be highly regulated until it comes into conformance with the approved solution for doing business.  Whether or not it actually provides a better service for the customer dollar is tertiary at best.

8 This is a big reason why the large corporations are sitting on so much cash.  Why should they invest their money when the government is willing to spend taxpayer money to accomplish the same thing?

9 Oh and I also refuse to do business with the bailout welfare recipients like AmEx, BoA, Chase, Citibank, Ford, GM, etc.  They all can suck my big fat hairy balls.

the only exception is a Chase HSA account over which I have no choice where to put my money (my employer made all the decisions on that).

11 Well, some would say corporations are sitting on so much cash because there's no demand and/or all investments seem too risky at this point.

What amazes me is Obama is just getting it that jobs needs to be the priority?  And then.. what is his plan?  He wants to talk about jobs.. talking about it is just as good as actually doing something about it right?  Isn't that what they do in acadaemia?

While our chances of getting back the White House in 2012 are looking better the longer he diddles, I really don't want the country to wait another almost 2 years to get moving again.  What a fuckup.

12 We are living a proto-French style economy (and society): big corporations getting everything; entrepreneurs, and would-be entrepreneurs getting less than crumbs--or unemployment.  I know what this feels like  It's Paris and it's suburbs (even rich suburbs) beyond the tourist attractions.

This must stop before it's too late.

AND ANOTHER THING!

I get tired of seeing Jack Welch pontificate on how wonderful he is and how knowledgeable he is and how people should listen to him.

Neutron Jack.  The buildings are still there, but the people are gone.  GE has become the paradigm for late 20th century/early 21st century Crony Capitalism.

They take over small to medium sized successful companies and run them into the ground by driving out the old-time employees that know the customers and products and promote younger, cheaper people that are being fast - tracked to "management" (which is all they really care about), while customer service goes into the toilet.  They have done this to numerous companies in the last ten year that I know of.

So fuck that Welch guy and Immelt, too.  GE should be broken up in to a lot of parts and the Top Management should be exiled to Boogerglob, Yugoslavia.  (I know, Yugoslavia doesn't exist anymore- it's a JOKE!)

Look behind the curtain.
Smaller businesses are sitting on their cash (while they still have some) because they're paralyzed by the unknown future financial structure of the country and the regulatory handcuffs they expect to be placed on them shortly in the name of fairness.
Large corporations are being bailed out by their cronies in gummint, still get to award themselves big bonuses, aren't accountable to anyone for the tax dollars they have received, and are waiting for a real bottom to scoop up the smaller businesses and properties that have been ravaged by the great Zero.

36 You guys don't understand how the economy works. The federal government prints money and spends it on what it wants. The money primarily gets filtered thru the first receivers: transfer payments to individuals, defense contractors, government employees, banks, and corporations with large government subsidies. Then, thru the magic of the monetary multiplier, it makes its way to everyone else. That's why the government can spend $3.7 trillion but the economy is $14.7 trillion. That's like a multiplier of 4. It works so well the government has to tax people to put a brake on it. Unforunately, most of you that got educated in cow colleges didn't learn this. Us Ivy league were taught this, that's why we run the country, to keep you from harming yourself and others.

Actually "The American System" of corruption started long before the Chicago way. Adams was a big supporter of this kind of crap.  But the one who made it a common fact of life for the U.S. was Lincoln in 1862. After the South left the system he had no opposition.

The transcontinental railroad went bankrupt shortly after the gov billions ran out while the private railroads like The Great Northern made a profit.

Railroads in the 19th century were the GE of the time.

More money for energy efficient buildings= Green Jobs! aka Let's dump more taxpayer cash into shit that provides no significant return on investment and employ a truckload of illegal immigrants for a week to install windows

Governmanagement can only skim a percentage from the funds that pass through its hands and use it to feather its own nest.  It is absolutely useless except as a formal mechanism for redistribution of wealth.

Private business management is also mostly useless, but at least (for small enough to fail industries) they are accountable and if they screw up the bottom line enough they go bankrupt and/or lose their jobs.

More training for government jobs--that's the way to go.

MIAMI, Fla. -- A low-dollar fundraiser here Monday felt like a throwback to the 2008 campaign.

There was the same old soundtrack – including "City of Blinding Lights" by U2, the president’s 2008 anthem -- the enthusiastic organizers and the abundant appeals for supporters to rally behind President Obama.

The one missing element? Overflowing crowds.

Granted, it was a fundraiser, not a free rally. But the empty seats were hard to miss.

The top level of the 2,200-seat concert hall at the Adrienne Arsht Center for Performing Arts was entirely empty, as were the seats along the side of the second and third levels.

"The expectation was 900," a Democratic official said, and more than 980 tickets were sold.

Empty seats are racist

As a former QC engineer for an Aerospace company, I have to say SPC is quite valuable when used by people who understand it. It has been my experience that company management wants to hear that "out of control" processes are a people problem, not that they are going to have to spend 6 million dollars to replace their worn out junk machinery which is incapable of maintaining control within +/- 3 sigma, much less 6.

Every major company in the country signed up for that Total Quality BS in the 80s. It was nothing more than a way for consultants to make a fortune.

79 First lady Michelle Obamaon Monday told a fundraiser in Southern California of the toll the presidency has taken on her husband Barack Obama.  "I see the sadness and worry that's creasing his face," she said to a crowd of about 500 at the Pasadena luncheon organized by the Southern California Women For Obama. She described his worth ethic as “tireless,” according to pool reports. "He reads every word, every memo, so he is better prepared than the people briefing him," she said. "This man doesn't take a day off." She said the next two years of campaigning would be difficult for the Obamas and their supporters. "It is not going to be easy, and it is going to be long," she said. "Now more than ever we need your help to finish what we started."  She also mentioned health carereform, the passage of the Lilly Ledbetter Act and the repeal of Don't Ask, Don't Tell. She praised "justice" in the killing of Osama bin Laden, and the withdrawal of troops from overseas.  Bullshit  !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

85 Every major company in the country signed up for that Total Quality BS in the 80s. It was nothing more than a way for consultants to make a fortune.

In my 25yr career in materials science I have noticed that these quality programs change names about every 7 years.

The only thing that really changes are the buzzwords and the consultants who preach it.

Nothing in them that a decent understanding of statistics and the equipment used can't beat for getting real quality.

97 "Free to Choose" by Milton Friedman has a brilliant chapter about this very topic- why attempts to regulate always turn into tools for those "regulated" to stifle competition. Big business loves big government. Big gov't tips the playing field. Regulatory compliance is an expense that is more easily absorbed by a large outfit. Or if you don't like to read Friedman's PBS series "Free to Choose" is online. Thanks. Even though I did read most of the comments, I don't often sit down with a book.

110 OT, but

REFUGIO, Texas (AP) — Investigators said a man has died while in the act of raping an elderly South Texas woman.

The Refugio County Sheriff's Office identified the man as 53-year-old Isabel Chavelo Gutierrez. Sheriff's Sgt. Gary Wright said the incident happened June 2 after he rode two miles by bicycle from his home to that of his 77-year-old victim in the tiny coastal community of Tivoli.

Wright said the 5'-7", 230-to-250 pound man sneaked into the woman's house and raped her at knifepoint.

During the assault, he said he wasn't feeling well, rolled over, and died.

Gutierrez' body was sent to the Nueces County medical examiner in Corpus Christi for autopsy.

Gutierrez was a registered sexual offender on parole from a sentence for aggravated sexual assault and indecency with a child.

(this is from memory, so not entirely accurate)

There are three groups of people who support the income tax, one was politicians, one was socialist minded academics, and the third was the extremely wealthy business owners, who having already acheived their success wanted to prevent competition and dump the increasing costs of employing people onto the government(healthcare, pensions, etc)

Statistics are difficult to apply to subjective characteristics. It is much better suited to repetitive processes that have a set of specifications to adhere to. I know the consultents disagree, but a machine is much less likely than a person to have a hangover and tell you to get boned.

132 @129 Running into that more and more. It's been a great card from a consumer standpoint. As a merchant, 90%+ of my CC sales were Amex. Four percent is a gigantic hit to take. But that's how they fund all those fancy rewards programs - on the backs of the merchant. For a lot of low-margin businesses, it's just not worth accepting it. For businesses that cater to clientele that will take their business elsewhere if you don't accept Amex, you can't afford NOT to accept it. So every customer has to subsidize their fees through higher prices, or get rid of Amex.

Also, i've always thought that merchants should put up signs in their store that say if you pay cash you get a 1% discount or whatever half of the rate charged by the Credit card company.

So if Visa charges 2% then you offer a 1% discount for cash purchased.

26 Thought we already had a name for this--the Chicago Way!

Last week here on AoSHQ there was a link to the WSJ, detailing exactly what the CW really means.  Income taxes were raised in Illinois (retroactively!!!) back in January.  So far, the increase in the corporate tax increase has brought in an additional $300 million.

BUT, the greedy slobs who run Illinois have, in that same time period, given away $250 million to big corporations that have threatened to move out of the state, and take their jobs with them.

So not even six months into the new, higher tax regime, and the Chicago Way is exposed for all to see.  If you are a little guy, a nobody, you get stomped on and your wallet stolen so that the big guys can take your stuff.

Because your available credit decreases which lowers your credit score.  Outstanding debt to available credit ratio increases.

Really?

So if I have 2 credit cards with 4,000 dollar limits and I close one, then have the remaining credit card's limit moved to 8,000 dollars, my credit score wouldn't be effected?

Because my credit and debt ratio would remain the same would it not?

156 Your credit score will take a hit if you do.

Meh.  Your credit score is an  "I Love Debt" score.  Yeah your score will take a hit but you will be less likely to go deeper in debt as well.  Your insurance rates might go up, yes.  If your rent is determined by your FICO score then you have an idiot for a landlord anyway.

You don't have to play the FICO game, but it is a bigger hassle if you don't.  You have to demand things like manual underwriting for mortgages and the like.

Personally, when I was able to put $5K away in a separate account for an emergency fund, I just opened up a debit card on that account and closed all my credit card accounts.

The other examples are non issues.  Employers?, Renters?

They are a non issue if you are not looking for a job or apartment.

You have to be pretty pathetic to be judged ineligible by your Credit Score, alone.
..

It is a factor, but when 100's are applying for a job, a bad credit score can prevent you from getting the first interview.

No matter how impressive your resume, or how good your "expositon," (which employers know is 90% bullshit,) the credit score is a "fact" that is very telling.

147: Ben in my state it is illegal to charge different prices to different customers for the same product and the lawyers have stretched that to mean businesses cannot offer discounts for cash payment. OTOH most chains can offer a discount for 'club members' by signing up and letting them track your buying habits by swiping their card with every purchase. Its almost as archaic as the water laws.

Really?  What state?

I worked at a few jobs in highschool and college where the owners would give discounts for cash purchases, but i don't think they advertised it. Maybe they weren't following the letter of the law.

It's insane all the regulations on business. I'd be willing to bet it we got rid of 50% of restrictions on business, that we'd be back to 5% unemployment in one or two years.   The states keep making it harder and harder to make money and employ people and then they yell at us and blame us for not making more money and employing more people.

182 Ben, it's not just the acceptance/denial aspect of your credit score that's so important. It's what interest rate you can command. It's great not to have debt. But most people are not in the position to pay cash for a car or a house. And for big-ticket items, 25 basis points can mean thousands of dollars of interest, even if you pay off early - amortized loans front-load the bulk of the interest payments.

June 14 (Bloomberg) -- President Barack Obama today makes the first official presidential stop in Puerto Rico in a half- century with a message aimed more at an audience on the U.S. mainland.

“It’s almost a coming-out party on the growing importance of Puerto Ricans and the Puerto Rican population in the United States,” said Dario Moreno, professor of political science at Florida International University in Miami. “I think the visit will certainly help Obama in Florida.”

With the U.S. recovery still unsteady and a jobless rate forecast by the administration to be an average of 8.6 percent in 2012, the Republican candidates vying for the partyÂ’s nomination are making ObamaÂ’s stewardship of the economy a main theme of their campaigns. Obama is girding for a close election contest, and Hispanic voters may provide crucial support in winning the electoral votes of states that are narrowly divided.

Some good friends of mine run a restaurant here.  if I am there and don't pay with actual cash they prefer that I write a paper check. Next they prefer a credit card. To them the debit card is the last resort.

BOA here charges fees for the credit cards, and even higher fees for debit cards. And what is really strange those fees float with the amount of tip you leave.

I'm not so sure about that.  My bank card, debit/credit, only offers reward points if I use it as a credit card, which I assume means they get higher fees from the merchants on credit than on a debit transaction.

I have noticed that sometimes the tip I leave on the bill is not included in the amount debited from my acct.  I assume the restaurant pays the server out of cash for the tip to avoid higher fees.

There are over forty different interchange rates based on the program bundles the cards have. I figure I've seen just about all of them. Except this mythical card with no rewards program of any kind. Yeah, I just reread the book last month, it's pretty scary how accurate Rand was in many ways.

No new thread yet?  *pout*

Anyhoo, this is quite an interesting article that has nothing whatsoever to do with Obama's Jobs Council, but DOES have everything to do with violence, and I know that will appeal to the M&Ms.  It's a great indictment of stupidity and the problem of living a sheltered life, as evidenced by the Slutwalks and the Libya conflict, and it expresses quite clearly what I've never been able to articulate.

Violence Always Escalates

"...Another problem is that you may engage in violence only to find that your opponent has a much higher threshold for it than you do. But even if he doesnÂ’t itÂ’s very easy to find yourself in a situation in which everyone wouldÂ’ve been much better off if youÂ’d just avoided the fight altogether..."

293 So I watched an audience of voters respond to a GOP economic town hall broadcast this morning. They unsurprisingly stacked the audience with Dems and mushy mods who consider any explanation longer than a 30-sec soundbite to be vague and words containing 4+ syllables confusing. How can you be skeptical about an answer when you didn't pay attention to said answer? These 52%ers have the attention span of a gnat.

294 I hate that term "crony capitalism" Its not capitalism at all, its closer to fascism.

In any case, these guys are responsible for QE2 and the philosophy behind it: the thought that businesses are holding back on hiring and expansion because there's not enough money in the system. That's just ignorant.

The reason businesses are holding back is uncertainty and the fear of how expensive the Government Health Insurance Takeover Act will be.

298 Jean: Even if we agreed that suspending regulations, eliminating the minimum wage and inaugurating new power-generation building programs encouraged growth, none of those things will affect the short term. My belief is that we still don't understand the ways political institutions are connected to economic growth. After all, many of the nations with the highest economic growth are autocratic: China, Singapore, Qatar, Nigeria, Yemen etc. Meanwhile, other nations with relatively high economic freedom like the U.S., Australia, Canada and New Zealand historically enjoy lower rates of growth. I'm not suggesting authoritarian economic policy promotes growth, because there's better evidence to the contrary, but that our understanding of the secondary and tertiary economic effects of policy is still pretty basic. About as far as I'm willing to go is to admit that there are some ways government policy can slow growth or even cause a recession. There is no policy that can stimulate short term growth, and I'm skeptical of .gov's effect on longer term growth. Even spending on education, infrastructure and the courts has steeply diminishing growth returns (and increasing opportunity cost) with every dollar spent beyond the basics. We don't know enough about growth to incentivize it with policy.

299 The term "redistribution" has always bugged me.  It is such an innocuous sounding word when what it describes is so heinous.

What is "redistribution?"  It is when government steals from its citizens under the color of law so that it can then pass that money out to other people in order to foster dependence and to purchase their political support.

To merely describe this as redistribution is not even factually correct.  If I have ownership or rightful control over a resource, and I alter how it is allocated, then that is redistribution.  The state has no ownership of my property or rightful control over it, let alone the right to confiscate it and give it to other people.  To call what they do "redistribution" adds insult to injury.
