Obama's Mission Accomplished Speech
— Ace

We fought this war, but I made all the right decisions.

Larry Sabato joked that this would be Obama's version of LBJ's "light at the end of the tunnel" speech.

Nailed it:

"...even as there will be dark days ahead in Afghanistan, the light of a secure peace can be seen in the distance."

Thanks to Andy Levy. Technically, I am watching this too, but I'm not really watching it. As I have said, I cannot focus on his voice.

43 This is what is out there: (IPT) — Donations to the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) no longer are tax deductible after the organization was among 275,000 tax-exempt organizations purged earlier this month by the Internal Revenue Service. The groups failed to file required annual reports, known as form 990s, detailing their revenues and expenses, for three consecutive years. CAIR had been a non-profit on its own, but in 2007, the IRS approved a separate tax-exempt CAIR Foundation. The foundation never filed any subsequent reports. Both the foundation and CAIR national are on the purge list. CAIR has 30 state chapters throughout the country, many of which have their own non-profit designations which remain active. While the IRS believes most of the organizations stripped of status have shut down, those still operating can apply for reinstatement. Meanwhile, CAIR’s web site continues to solicit donations by touting them as tax deductible two weeks after the IRS issued the list and notifications were sent to all 275,000 purged groups. via weasel zippers

If it is indeed true that his personal likability is high, I'm left with one uncomfortable conclusion.  People just aren't that good at reading other people, their hidden selves, so to speak.  I see someone like him as very sinister, not fumbling and bumbling through the presidency, but one who is actively dismantling America on purpose.  I saw his real self as plain as day all the way back to the primaries.  I see liberal politicians mostly as corrupt and corrosive people with bad, devious hearts.  Why do other people fall prey to what some of us can easily see?  It's a mystery indeed.

Others say that...

Posted by: rdbrewer at June 22, 2011 04:43 PM (C0+ZS)

207 Here's the scariest part of his whole speech.

The back drop for StimulusII and still saying ' the democratic aspirations that are now washing across the Arab World.'

As they do, we must learn their lessons. Already this decade of war has caused many to question the nature of America's engagement around the world. Some would have America retreat from our responsibility as an anchor of global security, and embrace an isolation that ignores the very real threats that we face. Others would have America overextend ourselves, confronting every evil that can be found abroad.

We must chart a more centered course. Like generations before, we must embrace America's singular role in the course of human events. But we must be as pragmatic as we are passionate; as strategic as we are resolute. When threatened, we must respond with force — but when that force can be targeted, we need not deploy large armies overseas. When innocents are being slaughtered and global security endangered, we don't have to choose between standing idly by or acting on our own. Instead, we must rally international action, which we are doing in Libya, where we do not have a single soldier on the ground but are supporting allies in protecting the Libyan people and giving them the chance to determine their destiny.

In all that we do, we must remember that what sets America apart is not solely our power — it is the principles upon which our union was founded. We are a nation that brings our enemies to justice while adhering to the rule of law, and respecting the rights of all our citizens. We protect our own freedom and prosperity by extending it to others. We stand not for empire but for self-determination. That is why we have a stake in the democratic aspirations that are now washing across the Arab World. We will support those revolutions with fidelity to our ideals, with the power of our example, and with an unwavering belief that all human beings deserve to live with freedom and dignity.

Above all, we are a nation whose strength abroad has been anchored in opportunity for our citizens at home. Over the last decade, we have spent a trillion dollars on war, at a time of rising debt and hard economic times. Now, we must invest in America's greatest resource — our people. We must unleash innovation that creates new jobs and industry, while living within our means. We must rebuild our infrastructure and find new and clean sources of energy. And most of all, after a decade of passionate debate, we must recapture the common purpose that we shared at the beginning of this time of war. For our nation draws strength from our differences, and when our union is strong no hill is too steep and no horizon is beyond our reach.

America, it is time to focus on nation building here at home.

Posted by: Lady in Black at June 22, 2011 08:40 PM (kOtPb)

It isn't that rational.  First, they aren't evaluating him at all.  They want to like him and so they can "personally" like him without consequence. It's subjective.  Second, it's the kind of thing we say in our daily lives to mitigate against a criticism. To me, it's actually an insult. Third, what are you, racist?

their hearts are in the right place. I know this one spouse who doesnt want to know anything about what he guy does. WTF? Anyway i couldnt live like that. Tho much of what he does my guy DOES NOT DISCUSS. But we do however talk about everyone else and of course his "Puppies."

they drive him nuts but he keeps them safe. I pray Janes boy gets a guy on his team like mine. he will be safe as can be hoped for in the shit.
but as a horsewoman i know this... life isnt safe.

That being said, I put on a tough act to the kid.  He thinks his dad and I are super strong.  He has no idea how worried we both are, but especially me, with my family all dead, except the bi-polar, lib sister.

Yup, when it's not your time, it's not your time.  A friend of mine had a sudden cardiac arrest while we were running.  I had to do CPR on him.  When the medics finally arrived, he was flat lined (which I knew already).  They only had to zap him once and he came back.  He got cathed and stented that night and was kept in a medically induced coma for a couple of days.  That was 3 years ago.  He's completely fine now with no deficits (despite being down for a little while).  He ran his first post mortem 5k 5 months later and did a marathon 14 months later.  I keep telling him it was the hand of God and that it just wasn't his time yet.

297 Some of you who watched the "speech" are all riled up.

Me, I did not watch it and am totally relaxed.  I've not been able to watch him on TV in a long time.  A really long time.

So totally off topic.  Can we discuss, as James Taranto describes it, the unwieldy name of Ms Debbie Wasserman-Shultz?

Does it sound better as just Wasserman?  Debbie Wasserman.  How about just Schutz?  Debbie Shultz.

Nah.  Either way it still sound shitty.

Is it the Debbie part?  Should she call herself, instead, Deb?  Or is that too common-sounding?

What about, hey, we go with the full biblical Deborah?  With the h on the end and everything.  How's that?

But we still need a last name.  What would we go with as a name, a stage name, the way the Hollywood studio heads came up with monikers like "Clark Gable" and "Marilyn Monroe" way back in the last century.

What would we do for Deborah, as we'll now call her?

Hes the taxi for guys like mine. good news is his cars full of guys like mine, and EOD guys, bad news is--they go where the trouble is. Now i could be mistaken but without seeing his MOS i dont know.

Frankly, most valiant little marine my guy ever had we will call her a "past puppy"  was a little girl who never raised her voice. She had four brothers who were marines and she was tougher than nails. I would have been jealous of her if he didnt always compare her to me, not the other way round... they are promoting the crap out of her and shes gonna have an awesome carreer.

She got a combat V. Your kid could win honour. Thats what HE wants. Let him be him. I know its not what a momma wants to hear but any motor T convoys around, and that makes your vulnarable. Most guys come home just fine tho Jane, so why not yours? Ask. Believe. the time will pass in a flash if you keep busy. remember he will come home different. Usually for the better, and no longer a "Puppy." Trust me, you want that for him.

325 So.  He adds 30,000 troops, takes them out again.  Didn't he say the war in Iraq was officially over many moons ago?  Yet, our soldiers keep getting hit, wounded, and dying?  Personally, but that's just me, because I cannot stand the man, whatsoever, I've wanted every single troop out of both Afghanistan and Iraq when he took office....then there was that little Rules of Engagement tweak he came up with.  Out, out, I say.  Every death is a blow to the heart, but especially bruising under his sneering, laughing, simpleton demeanor.

Someone said a few nights ago, everything Obama was apparent, out there, in neon, when he was running.  Flashing, flashing neon.  Yet, hardly a ripple of disbelief or discontent.  Let's elect him.

Does this mean we are going to stop bombing Libya?  We do not belong there, we don't know who the rebels are? Is this the "just war" or "kinetic action?" No, it's a waste or our money and resources.  The rebels are more than likely Al Queda!  Nice job Barky, good choice you made.
