Obama's New Villain on Job Losses: The Internet
— Ace

It's not true. Sure, any successful new industry tends to destroy some jobs. But successful industries also create their own new jobs, and further, new efficiencies in the economy create completely unrelated jobs, products and services that can now be profitably offered because people have a bit more wealth, and hence can spend a bit on things they hadn't spent on before.

Obama only focuses on the first part: Internet sales has destroyed a good many brick-and-mortar sales positions. This is true (and I think something we need to look at as regards the disparate tax treatment of internet and local sales; either end the tax for both or impose it on both).

But in any growing economy, efficiencies would create wealth which would lead to other jobs.

His problem, then, is that he simply has a stagnant economy and diminishing wealth.

Not the internet.

But he needs a new villain because ATMs and robots were last season's villains.

I think it is BS. What has destroyed brick and mortar sales positions is a shitty economy combined with shitty local government.

And id localities want to compete on sales tax with the internet they need to quit raising damn sales tax through the roof. When I first moved here 38 years ago sales tax was 3% Statewide.

It is now 10.5% in the city and 8.5% outside in the county. Piss on them.

12 Obama is not a failure. He's been wildly successful at destroying the infrastructure of America - material aspects yes, but especially the morale of those he hates so much. He's a hater par excellence. Resentment is what he lives on. He's taking it out on us.
Blaming the internet for pointing out the truth about him is his real agenda. So he has to build a strawman (the internet destroys jobs) to attack. As if he gives two shits about jobs.

15 The problems with "imposing the sales taxes on the internet" are twofold:  1) internet firms don't receive or use any of the state or local services like police, fire, roads and bridges, schools, etc. and 2) it is virtually impossible to collect them, and a federal attempt to do so will only drive more businesses offshore.

It used to be great employing tens of thousands of people to maintain subsistence farming without equipment, and think of how many people once worked at factories before advances in operation did away with such necessities. It was a great environment for unions too! So what if the jobs were backbreaking and soul crushingly boring repeating the same mechanical task for 10-12 shifts? The lower life expediency from overexertion and the extra exercise at the prime of peoples' lives would dramatically cut the overall cost of Obamacare, lower the rate of obesity, and the number of people living to collect Social Security. So what if a few people get maimed? The big connected firms like GE & GM could get waivers to excuse themselves and taxpayers from paying disability claims to those foolish enough to hurt themselves on the job.....

Actually, it would be remarkably easy for a government agency to track, charge, collect and monitor compliance of a tax on retail goods and services on the internet, regardless of where the seller or buyer are located.  If the US Postal Service, UPS, FedEx and DHL were included in the mix with the payment of a “tax stamp” to verify that taxes were paid on the item being delivered, the systems would be fairly hard to circumvent.

Consumption taxes are a far better way to fund a government than income taxes.  They allow for more privacy and restrict the governmentÂ’s tendency to try to manipulate behavior.

102 Easiest way to collect sales taxes for online sales: collect based on where the seller is, rather than where the buyer is. By “easy”, of course, I mean “easy for businesses to handle”, since they already have the means in place to collect sales tax for where they are. It would be difficult, though, because it would mean a downward pressure on state and local sales taxes, and a boon on creating businesses in states with no sales tax. California would not like that solution, for example.

107 Any time someone drags out this old canard, I always give this example.  Here in our small town, a couple bought a small, neighborhood grocery store in the 1950s.  They made a good living for a while until the chain grocery stores started to pop up.  They couldn't compete on price, so their business started drying up.  The owner decided that he could supplement his meager business by putting in a small lunch counter.  Each day, he would have a special of something he cooked in his smoker out back.  Slowly but surely, people learned how good his food was and they started coming there for lunch.  They encouraged him to add catering to his repertoire, so he started doing that.  The people who came in for lunch went ahead and bought that loaf of bread or gallon of milk they needed.  His grocery business picked up and his lunch counter boomed.

Now, 50 years later, it's normally standing room only at lunchtime.  He's since added a bunch of tables.  Between lunch and his catering, he spends his time cooking and his wife runs the store.  His reputation is far and wide.  People who come to town always want to go to his store for lunch.  He accomplished all this because he innovated instead of whining.

A Consumption tax "restrict the government's tendency to try to manipulate behavior?"  Well, I guess- except for the part where it's your behavior (buying stuff) that they're making more expensive.  And they've shown no compunction against treating different industries and/or products differently as regards to "consumption taxes."

It would be difficult, though, because it would mean a downward pressure on state and local sales taxes, and a boon on creating businesses in states with no sales tax. California would not like that solution, for example.

The brick and mortar places do have a valid complaint about internet businesses not paying sales taxes.  My simple solution is that it is a flat 3% internet sales tax.  The Feds get .1% for managing it and the states get a proportional amount based the percentage of sales for that state.  This eliminates the chaos of businesses trying to figure out what the sales tax is for Backwoods, AL and levels the playing field.

131 I think California and Illinois have attempted to impose taxes on Amazon haven't they? And didn't Amazon say "fuck you" and took their business out of those states? DonÂ’t know about Illinois, but yes, in California the legislature ruled that associate programs count as a presence in the state. Forgetting that associate programs cost businesses like Amazon money, and that theyÂ’d probably love to get rid of them, as long as they can do so on an equal basis (i.e., their competitors have to get rid of them, too, or have their cost of doing business raised). So, Amazon cancelled the associates program for California. California tried to argue that this didnÂ’t somehow cancel their presence, but eventually gave in and repealed that part of the law; the semi-fig-leaf is that Amazon has said they would like a national solution. IÂ’m sure theyÂ’d love a national solution: something that makes it very complicated for competitors to start up.

174 Bullshit on the internet killing any brick and mortar stores. It was and always has been competition that kills a business. And the only way those local "mom and pop" stores stayed in business was because they didn't have any competition.

I don't buy from Amazon because their price is 8% lower (the sales tax here), I buy from Amazon because they have a way larger selection, I can read reviews, and the price is 20% to 30% or more lower.

Look, you going to tell me it was the internet that caused Blockbuster to go bankrupt? And not the fact that they charged over $3 to rent something for 2 days that cost them less than $10 to purchase? Along with late fees and that they could and did rent out over and over? NO. They were selling a product at far more than it's actual cost, they had a limited selection, and they refused to listen to the customer. The only way they were able to stay in business is because they had a monopoly--more or less--on new movie rentals.

So, it'd be nice if we'd not repeat that lie, that the internet has killed local businesses. It's a type of leftie smear right up there with the anti-Walmart shit.

Posted by: Merovign, Dark Lord of the Sith at December 06, 2011 04:22 PM (bxiXv)

It would be the hardest thing ever attempted, but if there was a groundswell of public opinion, it could happen.  Even the authors of the Fair Tax plan said they wouldnÂ’t implement it if the income tax isnÂ’t constitutionally repealed.

The only way something this radical is appealing to the masses is when the economy is way down and people recognize that big changes are needed to keep and create jobs in the U.S.  The Fair Tax would make the economy take off like a rocket.

Why would go to war against movie theaters?

192 I repeat, we do NOT need new internet taxes. We need to downsize local governments and get rid of local sales tax.

Also, make paying property tax a condition for voting in local elections. That was the way it was in early America.

In order to justify states collecting taxes on internet transactions, you have to start with the premise that states are entitled to take our money for no apparent reason.

Instead, let's suggest that your average brick and mortar joint better start up an internet sales department if it wants to compete in the 21st century, and if the state still wants to tax them for business they're doing within that state's borders, well that's between them and their state.

194 Does NJ still require me to stand aside and watch a "trained technician" "quickly and happily" pump gas into my car?  There are some saved jobs right there.

196 No new taxes evah! Current taxes will never be replaced, reduced or eliminated. No new taxes evah evah evah. Redistribution kills spirit and pride, entrepreneurship and extra effort.
