— Ace "As I've stated..."
In response to a question he says the mission is to protect civilians but, as I've said, Gaddaffy has to go. It's a weak answer that doesn't answer the question.
Is ousting Gadaffy a goal? He won't say. He's talking more about sanctions. I think he's trying to say the military goal is to protect civilians but his tightening-noose sanctions are supposed to further the Gadaffy-must-go goal.

It seems like he always has to reference previous statements when asked a tough question.
Hey dickface, if your answer was satisfactory the first time they wouldn't be re-asking.
Also things change, therefore a question wordred exactly the same as it was a month ago might have to yield a different answer.
You said no fly zone and now we're bombing everything Qdaffy in the country, care to explain the difference between what was sold to us and what is happening?

It just hit me last night that we're in another war. I know we've been bombing for a bit, but it's taken a while for it to feel like we're at war.
I guess it felt difference because in Iraq and Afghanistan, there was a build up to the war. I think Bush pushed for 7 months prior to us going into Iraq. He gave a speech before congress, he spoke forcefully about why we needed to be there.
Whereas with Libya, it's simply one day we're not at war and the next day we are at war.
I'm a bit torn too. I want Qdaffy gone, but I feel like this was the sloppiest entry into a war in American history.
No breifing the public. No "selling" the war. No real justification. We're just there.
Anyone else feel that way?

So, this is a no lose situation for me. Either she is out promoting the "war" and therefore I don't have to look at that bulbous thing. I win. Or she shrinks it down to normal size. Again. I win...

I think that pretty much sums up what's going to happen with Obama's no-strategy war strategy. Smart Power! Brought to you by the 52% of Americans that elected this venal, lazy, affirmative action, dumbass president.

He's trying to walk a LEGAL tightrope.
Under the UN Charter the UN cannot interfere in 'internal affairs', which by definition a rebellion is.... so the Security Council declared this a Humanitarian mission to try to get around that clear prohibition.
The UN cannot call for the removal of a Member States sitting government under their charter... but they will justify the destruction of Q's army as taking away his ability to massacre his own people... even though there is NO evidence said massacre is happening.
Anddddd... as Obama did NOT get Congressional approval, he is using said UN resolution as the legal pretext to get involved... as the Senate ratified UN charter does say that member states will support Security Council resolutions.
Because he does NOT have the authority to attack Libya under the War Powers Act (as under 2.C of said act, he can only attack if our troops or territory is under imminent threat... unless he has an act of war or specific permission from Congress).
So... the Weasel wording.... if he says we are going to overthrow the big Q, then he no longer has cover from the UN resolution, OR have authority under the War Powers Act.... and taking us to War in an Unconstitutional manner would rise to a High Crime or Misdemeanor...

I dunno. It's kind of what Clinton did with Somalia and his bomb/missile attacks on Iraq. Indeed, I expect its for the same reason. To "prove" that he's not an anti-military president.
That said, all we've expended so far (unless I missed something Sunday) is some cruise missiles- not exactly "in harms way" when you get down to it. I expect that'll get a pass from the public.
My main problem isn't even the "no buildup," it's the "no Constitutional authorization." I know there's some argument as to whether Bush had dotted the appropriate Ts on Iraq, but there we already had a declared war- and a cease-fire which had been violated (rendering any later issues of Constitutional authority to go to war somewhat moot). In this case, we have no such standing, that I know of, and no reasonable explanation for why K'daffy killing his own citizenry is a "Clear and Present Danger" to the United States.
I don't have a problem with us going in (indeed, I would have liked more actual leadership and the establishment of the "No-Fly" zone (which isn't what this is) earlier). I have a problem with the fact he didn't consult Congress or get their agreement to engage us in acts of war not clearly required for our own protection.

Their aren't a bunch of ways to make Daffy go away.
1. Reduce metabolic rate to 0 using method of choice.
2. Defeat, route, cause to defect, or otherwise render Daffy's standing army and security force useless, and upon crowds of pitchfork AK-47 wielding villagers showing up at his residence, comprising a credible and certain threat of reducing his metabolic rate to 0, Daffy steps down runs for life to Venezuela.

Here's the thing. I don't have a problem with bombing the tanks, army, etc as that is the only thing that will work, but that wasn't what he tried to sell us.
A No Fly Zone means just that. No flying. It does involve taking out Anti Aircraft installations, but has nothing to do with being the rebels airforce.
If he had said that, then fine, but he didn't He sold it as a no fly zone. That would be the extent of our involvement.
Now it is to "protect the civllians". That is as vague as it gets. Do we have the power to ban incandescent light bulbs in libya too? I think so if we're going by that vague defintion.
Here's what bothers me, no one knows what our mandate is there and what our goal is.
He's our freaking president. As much as bush was hated, you knew where he stood. you knew what his goal was. With Obama I have no clue.
What is our purpose there? Is it to over throw Qdaffy? Is it to stop a slaughter in Benghazi? Is it going to be a decade long No Fly Zone if Gdaffy doesn't fall like it was in Iraq post 1991?
He's the president. His job is to lead.

The original "No Fly Zone" (IIRC) was established under Bush I (and expanded a little under Clinton) in Iraq. It meant just what it said: no non-Coalition (then US) approved aircraft could fly in that zone: they would be re-routed or shot down.
Attacking targets on the ground is something else again. I don't know what you'd call it, but it's not a "No Fly Zone."
That said, a true no-fly zone would have been fairly useless, since you don't need airplanes to take out rebels armed with rifles and RPGs when you have tanks and a willingness to slaughter civilians.

Obama: "After the initial thrust that has disabled Gaddafi's air defences, limiting his ability to threaten the populations, there will be a transition in which we have a range of coalition partners, who will then be participating in establishing a no-fly zone.
"The core point that has to be upheld here, is that the entire international community, almost unanimously, says that when there is a potential humanitarian crisis about to take place, when a leader that has lost legitimacy and decides to turn his military on his own people, we simply can't stand by with empty words, we have to take some sort of action."

I don't know where this notion that we have to take out the air force and air defenses in order to impose a No-fly zone comes from. We impose it, and if they comply, no problem-it is a measure short of war. Just bombing from the get-go is war.
It seems to me this is a case of France wanting to go to war without having to say so.

Actually, just the opposite. It's the middle class, hard working, relatively thrifty Americans who are most numb. With enough pain, eventually the pain receptors just shut down- they quit providing any input. I think that's how most Americans are, today. They look at Obama (who promised them "Hope" and "Change") and they got the actual Obama. Then they look at the Republicans (who promised taking a chainsaw to the budget and repealing and/or defunding Obamacare) and they get a paltry 6bn (or so) in budget cuts. At this point, I think the vast majority of Americans have just abandoned politics completely.
Which wouldn't be so bad, except that most of them will feel its their "duty" to vote even though they haven't paid attention for 2+ years when the next Presidential election comes around.

Posted by: Dianna at March 21, 2011 11:44 AM (qrFCz)
I was under the impression that bombing hell out of pretty much every piece of military ordnance in sight was part of imposing a no-fly zone. So I have no problem with that.
But, boy, do I have a problem - like everyone else here! - with the question of what the point, goal and endgame of this little exercise in making things go boom is!
Posted by: Ben at March 21, 2011 03:31 PM (wuv1c)
I've think your getting to the root of what bothers me about his justification: He doesn't really care about the justification. My buddy and I used to compete in barbecue tournaments. Occasionally, another friend of his would show up. He was the kind of guy who was expert on everything. I'd give the game plan and, seconds later, he would repeat what I just said--only more emphatically. And his voice would change. He would use the voice of the seasoned expert. Like he just thought of it, and he'd decided to chime-in and help us out. This happened every time I talked strategy.
Me: "Okay, guys, let's cook the pulled pork about ten degrees hotter and for the same amount of time. I think last time we ran into a problem with it not being as tender as the judges expected."
(ten seconds)
Him: "We should smoke the pork... ten to fifteen degrees hotter... (wave hand in a hatchet motion for emphasis)... since your average judge prefers meat that is more tender. (Look at each person right in the eye for half a second for emphasis and to see if they all got the message.)"
Me: "Okay, I'm going to work on this presentation. I'll cut the lettuce into a rosette this time and use the garnish at the end to hide any imbalance in the display. Also, I'll use only the meat with the greatest amount of smoke, and put that in the middle and on top--instead of just throwing it in there. Judges like to see color. They like to see that smoke ring."
(ten seconds)
Him (loudly, directly to me): "You should arrange the lettuce so that it doesn't look like you just dropped it on the tray. (Look intently at my face to see if I got the message. After seeing that I did, continue.) And pull your meat from the best parts and put that right on top, so the judges see that. (Speak slowly, like an adult to a child, and look at me quizzically to see if I understand. When it appears I got it, continue.) Judges like to see your smoke discoloration. Also, use that garnish only after every thing else is done to hide any imperfection in the display. (Again, get right in my face to see if I got it. Then answer my nod with an exaggerated nod that everyone else can see clearly, as if to say, "I can tell that the retarded child understands what I'm getting at.")"
Yeah, I know what you mean.

Frankly, this is why I am against this entire operation. The "protests" in Libya were a rebellion from day one. There was burning of public buildings and killing of soldiers from the git go leading to rebel occupation of entire cities. Daffy may be the biggest asshole to ever come down the pike but I don't see how it's a "potential humanitarian crisis" when a leader is using violence to stop a violent rebellion. Was Daffy bombing cities before a bunch if people decided to occupy them and kill the local officials? How do innocent civilians announce they are about to "take" Tripoli?

I disagree with, but can certainly respect, that statement.
I believe that K'daffy being in power is a net negative (albeit a very minor one) for our National Security (minor on the scale of: "What if the British PM accidentally nicks himself while shaving- and has hemophilia?" minor- unless it actually comes up, why waste the effort?). So, when this rebellion (you're right about that) began, our correct course of action should have been to offer our assistance in the form of loans which could be used to purchase arms, equipment, and training, and would be repaid in very, very favorable oil contracts.
However, given that wasn't going to happen, I don't have a problem with this tactic, as much as I have problems with the extra-Constitutional nature by which we arrived at this situation and with the seemingly undirected nature of the "strategy" involved.

1. The reason Libya had rebels is that when Obama shot his mouth off about Egypt, and eventually forced Mubarak out, why wouldn't the Libyans think that he would do the same for Gaddhafi? Of course they did, and went into open rebellion.
2. France and Britain, who DO have national interests in Libya (oil + not wanting refugees) started talking about this No Fly Zone almost immediately after Libya's air force started bombing.
3. Obama dragged his feet, no doubt not wanting to anger Farrakhan and Wright, who get a lot of money from Libya.
4. Foot-dragging has given Gaddhafi time to move money (frozen accounts only happened about a week and a half ago) and also find a place to hide (Zimbabwe, Venezuela are two possibilities). He might already be out of the country.
5. Obama finally signed on when it became apparent Cameron and Sarkozy were going ahead, regardless, and when the Arab League started asking for it. He had to join in or look like a complete coward.
6. Foot dragging also meant that this situation would come to a head while Congress was in recess, preventing embarrassing questions from being asked.
This is not about Gaddhafi, or democracy, or anything except not been shown up by the Europeans. That is why there is no policy to speak of. He cannot say we went to war for Britiain's oil supply, nor that we are going to do nation-building and establish a democracy, nor that we want to kill Gaddhafi. So he mumbles around and says a bunch of nonsense.

Any mofo in Congress (I don't care what party they are) or in some appointed position in government should have to pay another more onerous penalty than a regular schlub who "forgot" to pay their taxes. These asshats raise taxes on the productive workers of America at the drop of a hat, but then don't bother to pay them themselves. They should have the choice of paying an extra penalty (because they are in the government and they should lead by example) or be boiled alive, naked in oil (although in McKaskil's choice, we don't want to see her naked). All these fat beauracrats and our "betters" in gubamint should be held to an higher standard. Stuff like this just really pisses me off.

You know how I know the blogosphere is?
They call a pair of C cups squished up "big fat tits"
If that is big, I weep for the standards of nerds-in-pajamas typing everywhere.

My problem with this operation is how do you follow it up? We have set a precedent that cannot be maintained. What's to be done with Yemen, Syria, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia or even Iran when this same shit happens. They are gonna kill civilians too and we will never be able to keep up with it. So why do it now.

If he says "As I've said before .. " one more time, half of America is going to throw up on the other half's shoes.
We've had some incompetent narcissists in charge before but Obama has set such a high bar, with Choo-Choo Biden thrown in as a bonus, only Kucinich could ever hope to top it.
Am I the only one who has noticed that Obama and his Minions at the WH have now given three different reasons for bombing the crap out of Qaddafi? Or is this one of those nuance things?

Obama has now launched more cruise missiles that every other recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize combined.

The historical roots of liberation theology are to be found in the prophetic tradition of evangelists and missionaries from the earliest colonial days in Latin America -- churchmen who questioned the type of presence adopted by the church and the way indigenous peoples, blacks, mestizos, and the poor rural and urban masses were treated. The names of Bartolomé de Las Casas, Antonio de Montesinos, Antonio Vieira, Brother Caneca and others can stand for a whole host of religious personalities who have graced every century of our short history. They we the source of the type of social and ecclesial understanding that is emerging today.

No breifing the public. No "selling" the war. No real justification. We're just there.
Our betters in the media are on board with it, and Michelle has never been prouder of us, so there's nothing to worry about. Now that we have a President who does not know how to use a chainsaw, we are much safer.

I think you could successfully argue selective enforcement based on limited resources. You set the precedent of parameters where you may engage, not that it is a mandate that you do. It's a gray area of selective prosecution which is reasonable in an imperfect world.
