— Ace Recovery Bummer.
In a report entitled "Unchartered Depths," the Committee finds that "employment is now 5.0% below what it was at the start of the recession, 38 months ago. This compares to an average rise in employment of 3.7% over the same period in prior post-WWII recessions." [Emphasis added and do note he's not talking about the unemployment rate but total employment, that is, workforce as a fraction of total population -- ace]On economic growth, real GDP has risen 0.8% over the 13 quarters since the recession began, compared to an average increase of 9.9% in past recoveries. From the beginning of the recession to April 2011, real personal income has grown just .9% compared to 9.4% for the same period in previous post 1960 recessions. [I do not know the exact definition of "real GDP" he means but I would guess it's the standard figure, less inflationary growth and probably less population growth, too. In any event, you can see the wide disparity between Obama's real GDP growth figure and the average real GDP growth in actual recoveries -- ace.]
The standard response from Obama apologists is that recession of 2008 and 2009 was different because, as former Clinton administration economist Robert Shapiro puts it, "this was a financial crisis, and these take longer to recover from." In fact, in most cases, the deeper the recession, the stronger the recovery to make up for lost ground.
That was what Ronald Reagan's critics said when the U.S. economy soared during 1983 and 1984 with quarterly growth numbers exceeding 7%. At the time, liberal Keynesians yawned and declared the good times nothing more than a normal snapback from the deep recession.
On the plus side, Obama reads the shit out of a TelePrompTer at 8.8% increase over most presidents in a post-recession economy.
Dean Vernon Wormer Comments:
Zero point eight. It's more than a little below par, Mr. Obama. IT STINKS! It's the lowest on campus. It's the lowest in Faber history!
Boy, I am not feeling well, to keep missing these references that are just there for the plucking.

Obama's policies inspire no confidence. Businesses are nervous to invest with EPA regulations, ObamaCare mandates, and incoherent plans about tax rates. Consumers see the high unemployment rates, slow growth, and business malaise and are just waiting for a 'double-dip'.
Even other Democratic Presidents who see the economy through a recession have presided over reasonable rates of growth as the recession ended. This should be used to show how radical and inappropriate Obama's policies have been. He is completely out of the mainstream of US economic policy.

So where is the normal snapback now? Even $4 trillion in deficits since 2009 and nearly $2 trillion of asset purchases by the Fed haven't pulled the economy from its funk.
To recap, we've spend nearly 4 trillion in dollars for a negligible effect. Good job there, guys, focusing like a laser on the economy!

He could have choose to focus on economic growth, modernizing the tax system, and making government more transparent and efficient. He instead decided to pursue government programs and policies that extended the recession and made recovery anemic.
Obama isn't just failing; he has failed. He promised change and instead produced the worst recovery from a recession in the last 60 years.

Unfortunately or fortunately the American economy is incredibility hard to kill. Even those doing their darnedest to burn it down couldn't keep it from modest 2% gains over the long run. If the economy starts a reliable growth at 2% they will sell it as RECOVERY!!11eleventy!! But they will also sell a barely moving 2% growth and long term painfully high unemployment as "responsible, sustainable recovery" not so fast and strong as to "Create another bubble" but move the country toward "prosperity" in a "Thoughtful, smart, and deliberate manner"

A trillion and a half plus of borrowing per year, an out of control anti-capitalist regulatory establishment, and the chief executive leadership style known as "Golgafrichaminian" will not allow this bleeding to stop. I seem to recall saying this months ago. The economy cannot self-correct when the controls are themselves are aflame.

4 more years of Obama and claiming he helped the economy, followed by Dems using his coattails to get back some to a lot of power, which is then followed w/ a GOP that gets scared and starts giving into demands of more spending to help Obama continue the recovery and suddenly the economy helping Obama doesn't look good.

There's no guarantee that bad news will hurt him. In fact, there's every reason to believe that bad economic news -- excuse me, continuing bad economic news -- will push people further into the arms of big government.
The Dems and their media shills talked the economy down leading up to the 2008 election. The shit they've done since then shows me that their intention is to get more and more people on the government teat -- either through assistance programs or via make-work unionized SEIU jobs. People who are really drowning will grab any life line, even authoritarianism. I think we've seen that before in history.

Interesting observation, but, you're forgetting a very important factor. The resurgence of the USA is not what Dear Leader and his regime have as their mindset. I'm convinced that their sole purpose was to tear down the US and the Constitution as we've known it, and replace it with a marxist model.
Despite what anyone thinks about the general population of this nation, the one thing that one doesn't threaten, and that's the general feeling of freedom from government bondage and intrusion. So many people that I know who voted for Barky have told me point blank that they'll never vote for him again.

I want people to have jobs, real jobs (not make-work Obama jobs). I want companies to expand and grow. I want the economy to recover. I want that all to happen as fast as it can because people are really suffering and the whole world is in jeopardy when the US is weakened the way we are right now.
I do not hope that the economy continues to falter and that unemployment continues to rise just out of the -- I think, misguided -- hope that it will guarantee Obama's defeat.

They did it in 1992, too. Everybody's neighbor was hurting, but very few actually were. Lots of "I'm doing well, but I'm worried about my neighbor" stories back then.
Of course, what we "root for" in this blog is meaningless. Nobody here is keeping anybody from working, no matter what they do. We're all spectators here.
Very good economic news will be out of Obama's reach. With a GOP House, very bad economic news won't happen either. They've shown that they aren't going to let him destroy the economy, even if it would appear to benefit Republicans in the short term.
It'll basically be ebbs and flows of more of the same except that inflation will creep up. There are a lot of economic aspects: Unemployment, inflation, energy prices specifically, the stock market, economic growth. None of those will improve greatly and I think inflation and the stock market have been overperforming.
A nominated Republican candidate who stays on message attacking Obama's record will weaken him considerably more than he is today. He's buoyed by the media right now. The preference cascade hasn't started, nobody dares criticize the man in public, even though very few praise him anymore.

here's my final reply to everyone mad at my viewpoint, look Obama has been graded ona curve. he has scandals, ugly moments on TV, disapproval in all his policies, an image of a guy who can't fix the problems of the country, a opposition party that just recorded a Historic landslide, unpopular laws and wars, and many are comparing the economy now to Great Depression 2.0
YET Obama is at 48% approval in the always scary right Rasmussen today. His worst approval ratings have been in the low 40s, I think ONCE he hit 39. all the problems he faces would normally lead to approvals in the high 20s (Carter, Dubya's 2nd term). yes Gallup has him at 43% and that's good news, and I do believe he's beatable unlike others who claim he's unstoppable. BUT because he's graded on a curve, any one little bit of good news and indys will run back to him wanting to re-elect the Historic president.
now i'm young and i've got lots to learn still, but to see Bush have the approvals he did and then turn around and watch his sucessor be an even bigger failure and yet he's still in "can comeback and get re-elected" territory frustrates me. so yes I believe only bad news will beat Obama.
now I understand the hurt right now. I was unemmployed for 2 years and it wasn't until a State GOV got tough that I was able to get lucky enough to find a job recently. I empathize with those losing their jobs and know it sucks to be unemployed when you need work. but again I believe only bad news can save us from a man I believe to be one of the worst Presidents we ever had.

Uh, no.
It was a) liberal legislation that MANDATED relaxed borrowing to people who could not afford it, b) nitwits who loaned the money to risky borrowers, c) the segment of the financial genius sector of the economy that thought bundling pieces of shit securities was a good idea, and d) the borrowers themselves. And I can't overlook e) a breathless media that acted as if a bubble was not in the works.
So get your finger out of one group's eyes and be a little more egalitarian in your blame game.
And, just to be clear--you don't get to decide what size house I need.

I'm not paying attention to polls anymore. Time after time it's been shown that these polls are skewed toward democrat voters, sometimes rediculously. Even with that, his numbers are slowly going down, not up. It's still well over a year until the next election. His scores will always be low, whether looked at by raw numbers or compared to the scores of normal people around him. Barky is one of those people who doesn't gain anything from being graded on a curve. Barky is the guy who helps everyone else out by lowering the curve quite a bit, all by himself.

I think all this talk about hoping the unemployment picture gets better or worse is moot because there is no way the economy is going to recover in any way, shape, or form before the next election.
How can it? As Stacy McCain says, the fundamentals suck. Even if Obama were to have a miraculous conversion to conservatism and started implementing conservative policies right the hell now, it could be years before things settle down, particularly with the gnarly debt he's burdened us with.
And that's the rosy scenario. In reality, things are going to get worse, and even a Republican victory next year will take time to turn things around. A lot of time.

Look, let's get back to reality here for a minute. The JEF is a stuttering clusterfuck of a failure of Biblical proportions. Americans aren't all stupid, although we will lie to pollsters on occasion in order to maintain our societal expectations. He is going down, and he will drag the Dimocrat party and progressivism with him.
It's also up to us to help this along. Ace mentions the "preference cascade," which is begun as a sort of whispering campaign. If we talk to enough of our friends whom we suspect got us into this mess and ask them the right questions, like who do you personally know who is better off today, they will gradually figure things out for themselves. They'll come to understand that they aren't alone in wondering what happenend to HopenChange. sometimes subtlety is the key.
Ya gotta have a little faith...

We don't need technocrats with degrees in political science and law to run our schemes. That's the difference between us and them. We actually believe in this citizen-government shit. We don't believe that the country should be run by plutocrats who regurgitate their Marxist professors' tired drivel.
I'm a research mathematician and, believe me, I'd rather have somebody with an honest ag degree running the executive branch than somebody who has a degree in political science and law from the "best" universities in the country in the wussmanities or the social-promotion sciences.
I'm not impressed with credentials or language. My family members didn't go to college and my colleagues do not speak English as their native language, so I've learned that the pseudointellectual twaddle and creased pants that impress the likes of David Brooks is just a facade. True intellect is in what you do and the problems you can solve.

Which we are in because of a politically-driven hostile climate for business, oppressive (even beyond their goals) regulation, over-the-top litigation expenses, ham-handedly burdensome labor laws (on top of powerful unions), and most of all COMPLETELY INSANE GOVERNMENT SPENDING.
You all know this. And the hole will get deeper before we get a chance to fill it in, assuming we can be bothered to do so. And if we don't, there won't be enough left to fight over.
I would be a lot happier if no one on the left was EVER elected to ANY office EVER again, but instead we're going to have to fight them tooth and nail every day, FOREVER.

Some of the numbers in the story were scary. One lady dealing with homeless families said she now sees about 5 people a day lose their house. The average time of homelessness, no permanent residence, is way above the old average of 3 months.
Canadian programming cut the segment short but not once was Obama mentioned. Media traitors. It's a horrible recession not involving the prez in any way.

@30: "I hate that there is a silver lining to more Americans losing their jobs or unable to find work."
What are you talking about? That (more Americans losing their jobs or unable to find work) IS the silver lining.

When Fox News first came on O'Reilly was the man. I'd go to work and tell my co-workers about how he was catching shit from both sides of the aisle and only a few people knew what I was talking about. What?! FNC was revolutionary. O'Reilly then faced the king-of-the-hill problem and did what many in his situation do: 1. Got the big-head and 2. started trying to appeal to a wider audience.
The dick.

I think you do both. If the insult was public, then a public apology is necessary as well.

Yeah, the investment banks that knowingly packaged crap sandwiches of mortgages, the banks that lent in direct violation of their established practices, the gummint that hit the gas on pulling forward demand for the last 30 years, the assorted fraudsters and banksters thrilled at huge bonuses regardless of the cost, the devastation of our industrial base, none of that was of any consequence. If only those greedy bastards who wanted a nice house (with Wall St., the White House, Congress, every bank, and every financial guru cheering them on) hadn't done that, we'd be fine.

Hey, screw you, pal! What, I can't just run away? Get adopted by a loving family? *I* have to die because you don't like Tom? Excuse me whilst I piss on your ankles.

Real GDP is nominal (current dollars) GDP adjusted for inflation. The deflator used for GDP is not the CPI but a complicated mess that depends on the economic output balance itself. That is the "basket of goods" used for the deflator is not fixed, but changes with the economic output itself.
To adjust for population, you need to look at real GDP per capita. And bear in mind that many suspect the BEA overestimates GDP just as the BLS (Bureau of Lies and Statistics) understates inflation and unemployment.
FRED at the St. Louis Fed is a good place to see all this economic data and chart it if you like.

Here's some real GDP graps from Fred:
First is Real GDP, quarterly, 3-decimal:
And the annualized rate of change:
And Year over Year percent change:
You can see what the fellow Ace quoted was talking about. The Bamster and The Bernanke ain't doing so hot. You can clearly see the V-shape ain't there this time around and there is no robust snapback

I meant every word, though, and that is why some long-time folk start shouting at each other over the economy or whatever related to Herr Doktor Presidente Jefe el McGolfsalot and, more importantly, the recent Democratic congress that took us from 8.what trillion to 14.what trillion in debt in a couple of years, and tanked the economy in the process (though that process started long before).
We're mad, we're talking, and so we end up arguing. Makes me mad. We should be out organizing, TEA Partying, gathering signatures for an impeachment (even if they don't do it) or for the removal of Holder, telling people what we know about Golfsalot's commie past and buddies, whatever.

And finally, I did a quick comparison of GDP vs total federal debt, indexed for comparison (2007 = 100). I had to do this since the units were different and it would take. Compare the growth of GDP vs the growth of debt:
Now, here's the year over year change in the two:
See the problem? You can't keep growing debt faster than GDP. Even when debt was increasing less fast, it was still faster than GDP by a long shot.

This should work now. This is comparison of GDP growth vs Federal debt growth. Here we have to use nominal GDP, not real for valid comparison
Anyway, there's the problem right there. You can't keep growing debt faster than GDP forever. We've hit that wall now.

That certainly added to the conversation.

I'll accept that apology the day I make as big an ass of myself as you did on this blog.
Oh, wait, that happened about two days after I started reading this lunatic asylum!
Dude. Much appreciated, even if it wasn't necessary.
