I believe that the majority of people who live in WI (non-public sector employees) do not support these shenanigans and that is exactly why the Union is all of a sudden offering "concessions". 

Nothing makes someone more willing to negotiate than someone who's losing the battle. 

If I were on a school board in WI, I would be on the hunt for folks who called in sick and then appeared on TV.

Also, if I were on the medical license review board, I would be calling up those doctors to defend their licenses.  They would all lose them if I was Queen of WI.

My uber-liberal, Obama-loving sister-in-law is the president of her local school committee in a small, very liberal suburb of a big East Coast city.  The last time I visited her and talked to her about her work with the schools, she mostly bitched about the teacher's union and what a pain in the ass it is.  Her husband is volunteering as finance committee chairman, and he said the whole town's budget is in danger because of lavish union contracts over many years.  This little town has 30 firefighters, all on salary with 100% paid pensions and health care.  Their property taxes are already very high and people are starting to leave for lower-tax suburbs. 

If people like this are starting to see the light, the public employee unions' days are numbered.

OK, so here's the thing.  Democrats and the MFM keep telling us repeatedly ad nauseum, how fabulous Government is.  They constantly browbeat us about how all things can only be done well by the entity that is the Government and how we poor schlubs need to be protected from ourselves, evil corporations, and everything else by The Government.  So if what they claim is true, then why are public sector unions even necessary?  If Big Government is a great force for good and benevolence, aren't Unions completely superfluous?  Who's going to be a better employer than the wonderful all knowing, all caring, all loving Gubamint?  The Government always claims to have people's best interests at heart and to care more about people than anything else, so why the need to be protected from them?  Hypotards.

The Madison-Camaguey Sister City Association can no longer send several dozen Madisonians to Cuba, like the group did in recent years. That's because last autumn, President Bush tightened rules governing travel to and from Fidel Castro's communist island.

One exception to the embargo is humanitarian missions. Dr. Bernard Micke, a family doctor on Madison's west side, is working with a small group of area residents to bring medical relief to the country.

Micke, along with representatives of the group, Sharing Resources Worldwide, is collecting a trailer full of medical supplies, including wheelchairs, crutches and medical books. On Sept. 24, Micke and six others will depart from Miami, and an hour later, they will touch down in Camaguey. They will deliver the supplies and tour hospitals and clinics. They will return a week later.

"We had to find a way to still send the medical things we wanted to send, in a legal way," Micke said.

To do so, Micke established the Wisconsin Medical Project six months ago. The group recently received a two-year export license from the U.S. Department of Commerce.

"Our hope is over the life of this license, this will be one of many shipments we can send," Micke said. He hopes to send shipments of medicine in the future.

Cuba has an excellent health care system that stresses prevention, Micke said. But "they don't have the supplies we'd expect in a hospital or clinic in the United States." The people of Cuba struggle with nutrition, he said.

"It's a hardship for them economically, nutritionally, socially," he said.

Robert Kimbrough, a member of the delegation, said he wishes Americans had more latitude in traveling to Cuba.

"I'm very excited we were able to continue our connection with Camaguey," said Kimbrough, who has been traveling to the island for 10 years. "I wish everybody could just break out their passport and go to Cuba."

If people are willing to help, the group would be happy to accept money and supplies to send to Cuba, Micke said.

Friday, some local Tea Party head honcho got a couple of them on video asking why they didn't show up for work.  I saw it on Fox, and the video probably didn't get carried anywhere else.  They gave the expected asinine response of "we didn't show up because we were doing the hard work of slowing down legislation that we didn't have time to read."

The question is whether the Democrat Left and other unions (AFL-CIO, UAW, etc.) do something to ally themselves to this or stay away.  I think there will soon be a movement among this part of the traditional Democrat base to "double down".

I don't necessarily think this will go south on Walker (or Kasich in Ohio), but I do think that it has the potential of getting much bigger.  This is a watershed moment in the life of this Republic.  It won't be over in 24 or 48 hours. This is going to stretch out over the next few months.

This has the potential of blowing up in the face of the Democrats; it will not necessarily turn Democrats into voting Republican, but it will discourage a certain fraction of their base, and could definently turn the "independents" strongly AGAINST the Democrats.

Somebody said yesterday that this could be Obama's Waterloo.  Yes indeed, it surely could.

The Democrats and their media lackeys sense this too.  I surfed past MSNBC today and caught a preview of a "special" by Chris Matthews doing a hagiography tongue bath for Bill Clinton, with accompanying huzzahs by Kevin Spacey and Ben Stiller (actors!).  They are VERY worried about their brand right now.

Only if they cave.  The average teacher in Milwaukee makes more than double the average wage of a non-public sector employee in Milwaukee, plus with their benefits compensation, their total package is even more than double the wage--over $100K/year.  People are hurting financially right now.  Plus the fact that people had to scramble to find childcare the last several days can't be sitting well with people who actually showed up for their jobs.

Kinda need to know that, I got a dual-core HD-screen Radeon-driven laptop for about $350, but while it would play old games it would not be up for the latest titles in any way. It is for browsing and writing, not for games.

My cousin is a public employee in WI. He's worried if their collective bargaining rights are done away with, private sector employees would eventually lose theirs as well. I didn't care to debate since he is a good man, good father etc and it was a family function. He did make a point that if they can't collective bargain, they will still be treated as a collective because political pressure will keep them from having the individual bargaining (by this I think he meant merit pay) that private sector employees have.

Hopefully this shakes out so that good workers are not screwed by the lousy ones.

180 I can't fault any Doctor for giving anyone an excuse in this age of the malpractice lawsuit.

I think that's true -- if you ask for a doctor's note, you will get one -- but I would hope that the state/school district can reject the note if there wasn't an office appointment. And that would involve either proof of co-pay or request for reimbursement from insurance.

Another thing that the medical profession won't abide is pro-bono work.

Sounds too much like union-driven sloganeering bullshit, (which is all the MFM will spew, of course)  and people have got to stop taking it at face value.  Never take their slogans at face value!  Here's a clip of the summary from the WI state website:

I haven't read the actual text of the legislation, but I doubt it varies much from this, and this...this is pure poetry and should be adopted nationwide with respect to union certification, contract negotiation, and dues collection.

Honestly, I do OK out there.  But I would much rather spend my time on the course with someone who enjoys it regardless of where the ball goes, instead of some jackass who can shoot a 75 but bitches about an 81.

Mine's a '98. Long before GMObama Motors took effect. Although my gas mileage sucks, I wonder if anyone will address the issue of $3.50/gallon gas. Not like its important you know.

Get a wideband O2 sensor and an SAFC-2 or similar plugin-tuning device, you can leave everything normal but for part-throttle cruise.

I know people for whom it saved enough money to pay for itself, but admittedly it's not a large mileage savings 2-3 average MPG (5-6+ at part-throttle cruise).

Sometimes a good tuneup will boost you a couple MPGs. And gain a few lost hp while you're at it.

Cleaning the injectors and intake tract can sometimes help as well. If tuned properly, the LS1 can get pretty good mileage.

I don't log enough miles to get too worked up about it, but I do feel bad for the folks with the 50 mile one-way daily commutes.  It's gonna leave a mark.

It's $3.05 a gallon here.  I'm like you, lucky enough to live 5 miles from work, so yeah it's gonna pinch a little, but many people I know drive 30-50 miles round trip a day for their job.  But, of course everything else is going up in price because of the cost of shipping etc.

Hi all, I've been a regular reader of AoS now for several years, stop by a couple times a day at least, but this is my first post.  I'm a proud conservative Cheesehead and figure I'd chime in a bit.

From what I have been noticing the last couple days is that as long as Walker hangs in there the public is with him for the most part.  I've got a pretty good cross-section of friends, co-workers, family that I have been speaking, in some case arguing with for a couple days now and the majority are coming out big for Walker, even my typically Democrat parents are with Walker on this.

The difference is its a union thing, here in Wisconsin the unions really aren't over popular with us typical working class types. One of the things my wife first noted when she moved here 8 years ago from Lake County, Illinois, upon marrying me was the near absence of unionization. The bulk of us are non-union, have never been big on support for pampered union crybabies, and certainly not overly sympathetic to this recent situation.  Quite alot of us, just flat out hate unions and the gouging they stand for, many of us have had bad experiences with them as well.

Walker has got this one and we hope to God he stands his ground.  Been pretty damn proud of the man I voted for so far.  Let the squatter in the White House and his ilk send Jesse "never let a good media opportunity go to waste" Jackson and bus in their agitators, its not changing our minds one bit....tell em to buy a t-shirt on the way out, may as well bag some tourism dollars off em.

That fantasy disappeared in a puff of smoke a long time ago.  Back in the 70's, teachers were striking all over the place and many schools had to run the term through the summer to make up for all the lost days.

My wife is a teacher in MI, and is greatly embarassed by this, unfortunate for the good teachers out there that get lumped in with these dilusional, greedy sobs 

of course this is blowing up in the unions' faces. when joe kline of all people says your in the wrong and libs start getting annoyed of their kids not going to school and show sympathy for a rep gov, this is going to blow back at you. there's a reason public union strikes/protests tend to always lead to negative attention for the unions. w/ only 11% of public union membership in the workforce and a governor that was elected w/ 54% of the vote, in a state that went to Obama w/ 56% of the vote only to dissapprove of him in state polls regarding him, the people aren't going to be in the side of the money grubbers.

You can search online for "LS1 gas mileage" to look for some tips.

Tuneup, cleaning things like injectors, intake help restore new performance. New high-quality plugs and wires (you're due for plug wires if you haven't replaced them yet) are important.

People think they save gas by not modifying the car, that's only partly true. Freeing up restrictions can improve mileage (intake, exhaust), and while it's true that the average aftermarket computer is tuned for MORE POWAH, they can also sometimes be tuned for better mileage while losing little, if any, performance.

My BMW gained 18 hp and 2mpg with its computer upgrade, but I had to switch to premium gas. It was worth it. 16% improved mileage with about 4% increase in cost per gallon - saved money.

IIRC there is a plug-in tuner for LS1 cars that can switch between performance and mileage modes, but I have no idea what it's called, sorry. I'll try to remember to tell you if I figure it out.

This reminds me of a (mercifully brief) conversation I had years ago with a young college teacher online who said that he got his "news" from watching "The Daily Show".  When the moderator of the forum tactfully tried to explain to him that "The Daily Show" isn't, you know, an actual news program, the guy insisted that it was.  The discussion quickly went downhill from there.

Remember that episode of "Seinfeld" in which Jerry and George are at the diner in the midst of a dumb verbal exchange and right in the middle of it Jerry puts his head in his hands in exasperation, looks at George and says:

I'm not making a criticism. House calls used to be the way things were done and the AMA, in part, ended the practice in large part.  (Of course there are exceptions for close friends, family and emergencies.  Even then, people are encouraged into an ambulence.)  The profession likes people going to offices and filling out forms.  For that matter, so do the lawyers.

Besides, the whole point is that the medical package these teachers have is top-notch and they should be able to afford an office visit anyway.

I'm saying that the profession values its integrity above all else.  A lot of what you do is based on trust. Handing out notes to anybody in a crowd is not doing the profession any favors and they will notice.

My cousin mentioned being tied to the CPI and how that worried him because it hasnt gone up in several years. I was thinking yeah, well how many people in the private sector don't have a job, at least one of the family was going on two years, or had a severe pay cut like I did to get working again?

Yeah, it sucks but there is no good reason that tax payer supported employees should be permanently isolated from economic conditions unlike the rest of us, especially since we are compelled by force to support their salaries.

I can’t, for the life of me, figure out why teachers always whine about how much money they make. There is no other profession that complains nearly as much as they do. Presumably, they knew the pay scales going in, right? And their pay isn’t even that bad. In my state, the average teacher salary over $51,000 per year (One website I saw cited the NEA, stating the average teachers salary here is $56,000), and the cost-of-living is relatively low here. So, assuming that’s what teachers make about half-way through their careers, a married couple who are both teachers can make over $100,000 a year before they reach the age of 40. Can this level of income really be called “sacrificing” by our noble and dedicated public servants? The median household income in my state is $48,000. And that’s household, as in the total for all working people in the house. Should a teacher, earning what is one of the weakest bachelor’s degrees on college campuses today, really expect much more?

And that doesnÂ’t even consider the fact that teachers have great benefits, can retire young with a healthy retirement package, have nearly iron-clad job security, and have plenty of time off, including several months in the summer where they can work other jobs to supplement their income. And what other job do you get substantial raises simply for getting more and more credit hours in college, even if it doesnÂ’t have any effect on work performance? All that, and itÂ’s not exactly difficult to become a teacher in terms of the coursework and certification requirements (and, despite what it seems that teachers apparently think, there is no shortage of teachers; newly graduated teachers have a difficult time finding jobs).

There are some great individual teachers out there, and I mean them no disrespect, but as a group they tend to think way too highly of themselves.

Hi pst314, I have not heard it called Downer Village. It was the Coffee Trader, ...now it has a pancake restaurant, Via, a physical therapy clinic. Sentry is now  CVS. The laundromat is now the Hollander. I am just south of all of that. So are you going to the townhall meeting at St. Mark's on Wednesday. Chris Larsen is supposed to be there with Jon Richards and Nic Kovac.
