— andy Tim Blair picked up on something that's been bugging me about the Occupods ever since the story of the stolen $5,500 MacBook.
The recent Occupy Wall Street protests (and their Occupy Sydney and Occupy Melbourne cousins) have aimed their message at the income disparity between the 1% richest and the rest of the country. But what happens when you expand that and look at the 1% richest of the entire world? How much do you need to earn to be among the top 1% Â… ?
$34,000.
U.S. median household income (2009): $50,221
U.S. poverty threshold (family of four, 2009): $21,756
Being poor in the U.S. looks pretty damned good to the vast majority of the world's population (as is self-evident by the issues along our southern border). And the middle is downright rich by comparison. The self-anointed 99% would do well to get over themselves.

“It’s not the greedy Wall Street bankers who destroyed these people’s hopes. It’s the virtueocracy itself. It’s the people who constructed a benefit-heavy entitlement system whose costs can no longer be sustained. It’s the politicians and union leaders who made reckless pension promises that are now bankrupting cities and states. It’s the socially progressive policy-makers in the U.S. who declared that everyone, even those with no visible means of support, should be able to own a home with no money down, courtesy of their government. . . . The Occupiers are right when they say our system of wealth redistribution is broken. But they’re wrong about what broke it.”

Why anyone is taking these occupyers seriously at all is beyond me. I have a 20 year old son. Admittedly he is a little delayed because of his ADHD and various anxieties but he's in college and hasn't flunked out yet. He likes to work and made about $7000 over the summer. He spent it all immediately. He moved into an apartment this year for which I pay $300 month rent and I send him food money. Since he would starve if I sent it to him by the month, I put in $100 per week into his account. He was supposed to have his own money as a cushion. I gave him $100 last thursday night.
He called and asked for more on Monday morning because the girlfriend/hookup/whatever had a birthday on Wednesday and he was broke. No concept of consequences, no ability to deny himself, no responsibility. Somehow I'm responsible for some slut's birthday because he spent all his money and all his food money. No.
So stupid will have to get a clue because I won't vary from the initial agreement. If you want to buy the lay a present then buy less beer the weekend before. Duh.

They occupiers are occupied with greed. Not greed as in go out and make a superior product and vanquish your competitors greed. Rather, itÂ’s I donÂ’t want to work and I demand you give me half or more of your labor greed.
The only way to stop them and their sympathizers is to socialist-proof the constitution with amendments prohibiting governmentÂ’s intervention in health care, retirement and the institution of a flat tax and balanced budget amendment. Unless this is done, manÂ’s weakness for greed will continue to tear his government asunder. The Framers did their best to prevent the new government from collapsing into another monarchy. If they could have seen socialism and what a cancer it would become, IÂ’m certain they would have put those other safeguards into place.

"Poor" in America is a relative term. Our "poor" would, in most 3rd world countries would be unimaginably wealthy. Ask a Somali how he/she would feel with a 34k salary.
Maybe the term needs redefining.
Posted by: irongraqmpa at November 09, 2011 05:28 AM (SAMxH)
While in Asia last year, I got into a "conversation" with a Brit who thought America should do more to help our poor. First on his list was "stop spending so much money on your military".
The thing is, the Brits wouldn't be able to have all those people living on the dole and their fabulous nationalized healthcare if we did spend less on our military. They and all the other Western nations that are under our umbrella of protection would actually have to cough up some dollars for defense if we scaled back as much as they claim they want us to. Of course, they may get their wish if Ogabe wins another term.

I agree, at an obvious level, there is relatively little poverty in America.
But the way the government sees it, there is always the same amount of poverty, because their metric is disparity. If everyone got ten times richer, or lost 90% of their money and income, the poverty level would not change.
The only way to change it is to make everyone the same, aka communism.
What we should worry about instead is eliminated illiteracy and hunger. There are very few places where hunger is a problem in America. There's always some severe abnormal factor causing it. Illiteracy is rising slightly because our educators are unionized, so the fix there is clear.
All this occupy crap is about is power. They know their plans would reduce wealth and have a negative impact on real issues, but it would also give them power over everybody. That's what they really want.
Quite the opposite of TEA partiers who want a weaker government that taxes them less.

Something I wish my parents did to me when I was in college is to expose me more to the costs of living. They paid for tuition, provided food and room and board (I commuted to college), so I didn't pay much attention to money in college. (spoiled youngest kid, what can I say). I didn't learn about managing my own living expenses until I moved away from home and got a job and my own apartment.
IMAO, you should force him to save a % of the money he earns. 7k is a good amount of money, and it's shameful on him to ask you for more money now ... Personally, I'd tie his continued subsidies to his ability to save. "50% of that summer money needs to go into a savings account/investments in order for me to pay your college costs at the current rate; otherwise I'll reduce payments by the amount you don't save. If you can afford to splurge so much on luxuries, clearly you're able to pay for your own college edumacation."
