How Everything You've Ever Heard About Marie-Antoinette Is Wrong
Not only didn't she say the famous quote attributed to her, but the phrase itself is actually an example of classic liberal muddled economic thinking.

Marie-Antoinette didn’t actually say “Let them eat cake!” In fact, she actually worked pretty hard to feed the poor. The legend comes from Rousseau’s Confessions, where he wrote that a “Great princess” had declared “Qu’ils mangent de la brioche” while the people were starving. Unfortunately “Qu’ils mangent de la brioche” doesn’t mean “Let them eat cake!” either. It means, more or less, “Let them eat [expensive] buns.”

...When Marie-Therese declared “Qu’ils mangent de la brioche,” she was demanding that the “profiteering” bakers should follow the law and feed the people the more expensive bread, or buns — even though the ultimate result would have been to crush the bakeries financially, and hence make starvation even worse…

Like Who Needs to Know Stuff?
One of the perils of letting wet-behind-year kids like Ezra Klein and Matt Yglesias have prominent blogging gigs at MSM outlets is not only that they say stupid things because they don't know much about the world, but that they don't know (or care?) how little they know. One benefit of paying your dues before getting a media megaphone is that you learn a little humbleness about your own knowledge.

In my post this morning about why Apple lost the personal computing battle, I noted that a big part of the reason was the much lower cost of PCs vs. Macs. Matt Yglesias tweets back:
blog_mac_pc_tweet.jpg

Actually, they did in a way. The original version of Windows was designed to work with the first CGA color adapter, and in order to keep costs down that adapter only supported 16 colors. Later adapters supported more colors, but Windows retained a considerable amount of backward compatibility with old hardware for a very long time. Thus, even as late as the early-90s, versions of Windows were still using logos that rendered properly on ancient hardware.

You have to have teams man, you can't have an Occupy without teams. We need a grievances team an events and actions team, an entertainment team, a security team, a medical team, a technology team, an art and propaganda team, an recruitment and outreach team, a media and communications team, a resource and support team and a legal team.

Note that this list is verbatim from one of the Occupy websites. When/where I grew up, there was always a rifle in the truck.  From the time I was 8 I knew how to not shoot myself or someone else.  Like you say though, when it came to fighting outside the gym or the corn field, no one even thought about that, it was always fist and bone.

This leads to an interesting question regarding the provenance of a "deleted" email.  If it is recovered via a legitimate forensic process from a planned backup server, I would say (insert IANAL disclaimer here) that it is admissible evidence.  However, if it is retrieved via "heroic" means from an unauthorized bootleg server, I think its legitimacy could (and would be) questioned.

I have no doubt that a group that turns off credit card tracking for campaign contributions would try to establish a very short lifetime for sensitive emails (seeing as how they have made Obamao's pre-presidential paper trail invisible).

170 164 Lara Logan was NOT raped in Tahrir Square. She was groped and pinched. There was no digital penetration. What happened to Lara DOES fall under the definition of sexual assault (unwanted touching), but she was NOT raped.

Wow. My own personal thread stalker! Now piss off.

As was made clear in her 60 Minutes interview, she was digitally penetrated, both vaginally and anally, by hundreds of men. She was seen by a doctor immediately after her rescue and spent four days in the hospital back in the U.S. for treatment for, among other things, internal tearing.

I'm just curious why you're so eager to defend the honor of the scum of Tahrir Square. Sucking Moose-limb cock, eh?

At first he treated them "mercifully" by not killing those who turned the city over to his horde. But he soon made them sorry, by essentially looting the treasury.
After the city revolted against Timur's punitive taxes by killing the tax collectors and some of Timur's soldiers, Timur ordered the complete massacre of the city, killing a reported 70,000 citizens. An eye-witness counted more than 28 towers, each constructed of about 1,500 heads.
I'd say thats pretty bad ass.
he didnt burn the place to the ground, but instead killed everyone man women and children and then brought his own people in to populate the legendarily beautiful and wealthy city.

That was one hell of a bad dude, and I don't mean Clint Eastwood kind of bad.  I mean the kind you can find in ROP countries.  From his own words during a campaign in northern India:

I asked their advice about the prisoners, and they said that on the great day of battle these 100,000 prisoners could not be left with the baggage, and that it would be entirely opposed to the rules of war to set these idolaters and foes of Islám at liberty. In fact, no other course remained but that of making them all food for the sword.

Might as well repost this from earlier. You can see the Politburo forming, to the utter shock and dismay of the masses.

#OccupySF - End of an era, Consensus Out, Majority Rule IN

Last niGht at the #OccupySF meeting a motion was put forth to adopt a "New York" style modified consensus, or 90% Majority Rule.  They heralded it as a mve forward to keep the movement from being able to be "Hijacked" or held back by an  inflitrator. I see it as more of the same, the "Mob" can once again oppress someone with strongly held moral beliefs about not doing something, for instance Damaging Property.  But now, with A  90% VOTE the group can pretty much do as they please.

Several other key decisions were made that effect the HOLE movement, for instance it was consensed on by the GA that all Committees would elect a "Point Person" weekly who would come to the GA meeting 15 minutes before for a Committee Meet and Greet.  This Point Person would also serve as a Committee Interface for the other Committees, for instance if Comminication need to get something to Outreach this person would be the person contacted.  The person would also have to provide personal contact Information which WOULD BE WRITTEN ON A WHITEBOARD IN THE CAMP!

The GA is now trying to solve problems that don't exist,, and codify process which was meant to be organic.  There was a motion to force all Proposals to first go to a Committee before being brought to the General  Assembly.  Luckily this was voted down!

CAMP LOOKS

The rains yesterday gave the Campers the excuse they needed to put up tarps, which meant over head.  By the time I left the camp last night one Group of Creative Campers had found a way to hang Tarps as walls, and create their own little "Zone"... Commonly referred to as a HOUSE!  The once OPEN and INCLUSIVE and TRANSPAENT Camp has become a Modern Hoverville, or in this case Obamaville!

The camp looks like a dump with shit everywhere, and what was once a warm and inviting place, has become a scary Homeless Encampment!

A proposaal Last night to Comply with the earlier agreement with the Police and take the Tarps Down since the rain had stopped was just plan ignoredx, the People's Mike just stopped working!

253 228 I lived in Egypt for a year and a half. Got a real up close and personal look at the culture. Leo and Jake, have you guys lived in Egypt? Have you guys ever been to Egypt?

I didn't buy the story when it first came out, and the ever-changing details of the attack on Lara Logan made me even more skeptical.

You're a perfect example of G.K. Chesterton's remark that "travel narrows the mind."

You think that because during your 18 months in Egypt you met a few nice blokes--and presumably had sex with them--that you know and understand the culture.

Well, guess what? There are dozens of witnesses to what happened to Lara Logan in Tahrir Square. Are you alleging a conspiracy? Do you think the Jews stayed home on 9/11 too?

The woman was undoubtedly ashamed and horrified, so we're sorry that she has not spilled every little detail to your satisfaction, but we're not here to service your morbid curiosity.

so here's another odd story of the day.

Arizona Senate President Russell Pearce (R) is facing recall on Nov 8, and it's one of those deals with other candidates on the ballot. He has one Big Opponent, the others are small potatoes. So some folks who like Pearce went out and found this clueless woman named Olivia Cortes -- the female Mexican Alvin Greene -- and persuaded her to "run." They went around making "Si, se puede!" signs and built a website and ran some fake campaign to peel off votes from the Big Opponent. She knows nothing about Russell Pearce except his name. She's not sure whether she voted for him or not -- but "Maybe I did," she says wonderingly. A few days ago she dropped out of the race, I think. Any of you Arizona morons know about this? 315 I thought Belladonna was a poison.
As noted above, the amount is the problem. It's called belladonna because in the Renaissance women tried to take a small enough dose to enlarge their pupils to make themselves look more attractive. (But I don't know what the safe dose was.)

First...shark eyes? Seriously?

Second...I got the crap scared out of me when I just went to research it and read this, which contradicts what I read elsewhere. Belladonna is UNSAFE when taken by mouth. It contains chemicals that can be toxic.

Thanks, NIH, for scaring the piss out of me.

Taking it was an unpleasant experience. They loaded it into a syringe and had me shoot it as quickly as possible into the back of my throat. It stung and went up my sinuses and, essentially, gave me the feeling of drowning. Which, I suppose water would do when administered in that manner. I wonder why it's taken in such a way.

He or she is asking for witnesses in Egypt, riiiiight like it is a western country

I know islam, I worked for an islam owned business.

Muslims have tried to kill several friends and family members.

I'm not a super expert on islam like Spencer, Geller, Pipes, Lewis but I do know that islamic culture is 180 degrees out from Western culture.

For example in Egypt is someone rapes your sister you kill your sister because she shamed you.

In America if someone rapes your sister you let the law take care of it or hunt the rapest down and kill him.  Then comfort your sister.

336 Enterprise was a flop for a shitload of reasons. My own observations why are-

1. the opening song was 10 levels below lame. Start trek music was usually always big and bold. Enterprise music was REO speedwagon on qualudes.

2. The ship was a fucking piece of shit. Never fast enough to escape getting their ass kicked, never armed heavy enough to win, so they spent most of the show retreating while getting picked off. soooo not star trek.

3. The captain was a choir boy, and he agonised relentlessly about every decision he made and always cleared it with his vulcan handler.

4. The crew was made up of retards that spent every waking minute mulling over if their choice to be there was smart in the first place and half of those were always looking to live up to some expectation of some family member. Trip was the only dude with some kind of balls. They had to bring the Makos in just to get some kind of balls on the crew roster.

5. Chicks...not many of those other than the vulcan with the great rack and the translator chick. When the vulcan resigned from the vulcan fleet they could have loosened her up, but she stayed spock with her dutchboy hair cut. The translator chick might as well been wall paper.

6. No interaction or bond between crew members. No spock-kirk, or bones-kirk, or bones-spock, or chekov-sulu, or scotty-bones-kirk etc etc. The result was no classic banter between crew members that made some of the better moments in star trek.

7. They couldn't fucking pee without approval from the vulcans. Kirk would have said "yeah, kolinhar this".

I wanted to like it, but it was just missing everything that made star trek what it was.

On my last trip Islamists were gang attacking unescorted women in the streets - one attack happened in front of me in that arcade of shops behind/under the Hilton next to the museum. Five assholes in traditional dress started screaming and pulling on the clothes of women until the security guys showed up. They didnt run either, they basically dared the guards to do anything, the women fled, then they walked off. The kid running the internet cafe said it happened to him as well. Subsequently, I stayed on the island or out at Heilopolis where the military has a heavier hand.

342 On September 30, Judge Doherty of the United States District Court for the Western District of Louisiana handed down a decision in Vidrine v. United States awarding $1.7 million in damages for a malicious prosecution.

What ultimately secured an indictment against Hubert Vidrine was not Mike Franklin, as Keith Phillips testified — it was Keith Phillips’ and Phillips’ “tweaking” of the Mike Franklin story to create facts, as Agent Phillips wanted to see them.

One of the more distressing allegations made at trial, involved allegations of [EPA] Agent Phillips’ sexual, extra-marital affair (and its subsequent “cover up”) with [EPA] Agent Barnhill. The evidence strongly indicated Agent Phillips deliberately used his investigation and prosecution of Hubert Vidrine to foster, further, facilitate and cloak his extra-marital affair with Agent Barnhill, and perhaps, to exert improper influence over the manner in which she investigated and reported upon this case.

Posted by: kbdabear at October 11, 2011 11:57 PM (Y+DPZ)

I'm gonna go nerd here...

The Enterprise D was a Galaxy Class starship.

NCC-1701 (original series, movies 1-3 refit and 2009 reboot) was Constitution class.

NCC-1701A (movies 4 - 6) Constitution Class.

NCC-1701B (as seen in Generations) Excelsior Class.

NCC-1701C (as seen in TNG for two episodes) Ambassador Class.

NCC-1701E (movies 8-10) Sovereign Class.

There was also an a refitted NCC-1701D Galaxy X Class in the finale of TNG and an NCC-1701J featured in an episode of Enterprise that was a Universe Class but that was an alternate future so it doesn't technically count.

Posted by: viking at October 12, 2011 01:37 AM (OZymZ)

i always thought he was totally repulsive. i wistfully wished Newt wasnt such an untrustworthy putz. Perry seemed to be in less pain tonight. Bachman obviously didnt take her dose of Tardisil tonight. She came off ok. I wouldnt cry as i voted for Cain Perry or even Newt now.

I hate Romney hes an oily used car salesman if ever there was one. I dont trust him farther than i could throw him.

381 I'm beginning to find Huntsman repulsive.

Posted by: viking at October 12, 2011 01:37 AM (OZymZ)

I generally gave Huntsman a pass until last week when he trashed Sarah Palin on the View after she announced she wasn't running.  I was like, "What the feck, dude?"  Totally without class.  Plus his tendency to run his mouth like a total asshole at least twice at every debate makes me come to the conclusion he doesn't have the temperment to be president, and we already have one with a shitty attitude as it is.  Spoiled little rich boy is what he is.

But I mostly missed the debate.  I thought it started at 8PM and I overslept.  I kinda caught the last 45 minutes online (don't get Bloomberg TV) but didn't pay much attention to it.

Was listening to Rush this morning while I was trying to get to sleep and I think he nailed something I never thought of.  Romney trying to boost Cain and maybe one other candidate to split the conservative vote so he can sail through and grab the nomination.  In other words he wants to do by design what McCain seemed to do by accident in 2008.  What a fucking turd Romney is.

Shit, maybe I will support Cain.  Perry couldn't debate his way out of a paper bag, Bachmann is useless, Santorum is a joke and, much as I love him, Gingrich couldn't get himself elected dog catcher much less president.  Now maybe Perry has what it takes behind the cameras, but in front of them he's just...not good.  Romney is still a used car salesman and Cain...if Limbaugh is right and Cain's campaign organization is a teeny tiny useless little mess than we're fucked.

So what's this about Pawlenty heckling the candidates?

I only caught a few seconds of the debate, but what did you think about Romney's answer about the current, teetering economy. It sounded like the host was trying to get the candidates to talk about another possible recession, and Romney was heavily discounting the possibility, which I found ignorant to the nth degree.  Did it sound as bad as I thought it did?

We respond to dilated pupils because part of our brains interprets this as 'you might get lucky here.'

Messing with pupil dilation can have some fascinating effects on your ability to perceive what is happening around you. Larry Niven used this for an 'invisible man' psychic power in 'A Gift From Earth.' (Out on Kindle and Nook really soon, I swear.) The problem for the guy with this power was that every time he came close to losing his virginity, he'd get nervous and unconsciously use the power in reverse to cause the female to lose focus and wander off.

Hows Mr Grim progressing?? did they nail down his problem yet?

Posted by: beanervt at October 12, 2011 01:44 AM (KZLoo)

i think so. He was doing well enough that when his room mates went on missions while he was on 24 hours confined to quarters he spent the time watching (ahem) personal videos and fapping.  (hasnt had privacy for weeks and weeks) seems hes feeling crappy enough hes admitting he was till shaky when he did his first fifteen hour mission right after he was released for duty, and felt bothered that he wasnt 100% then was put on standby for another mission right after that. SO i think hes done two 15 hour gigs since being released and some really vile cursing about it.

i told him never attribute to malice what can be equally explained by indifference. I truly believe they are using him cuz they need him and trust him to get er done even if hes sick. My dads an officer i know how that shit works. They dont care if hes sick if they know they can trust him. Some jobs are too important to leave to a shitbag to do.

ellie wrenched a hock getting cast in her stall. i have been having to goop her with DMSO and furacin ointment from hock to hoof on her right hind leg.

the broken necked colt is loving his new job as a saddle horse. The black colt seems almost jealous of him. Grimmy is thrilled that his little boy that he talked me out of putting down is the best one, and just as good as can be. By the time he gets home i think the colt might even be good enough for him to ride!

and nobody minds getting pics of the training sessions because my adorable little friend who helps me with the horses is just cute as a bug and is in all the pictures im taking! And when she takes them, sometimes i flash the camera and Grim really likes that.

Ok, without violating any HIPPA stuff:

17 y/o female, malaise for ~24 hours, fever and headache in the morning, petechiae beginning in the late afternoon--eventually admitted to PICU on antibiotics, got 2 liter bolus and epi drip and still had SBP drop from 100 to 90 while in the ED.  3 days later, growing meningococcus in blood, nothing in CSF, and most importantly has had the meningococcus vaccine.  Thank God, is out of PICU, off pressors, doing really well.

1. Have you heard of other vaccine failures with meningococcus?

2. If yes, do you think this is still a publishable case?

406 When I was in junior high in 1988, hunter safety training was a part of the curriculum. We learned how to use firearms, survive in the wilderness, clean/dress animals and other various and sundry skills. Many of us knew this stuff already but it beat sitting behind a desk!

Once, I had occasion to mention that fact to a new teacher (in 2006) who worked in the same school system I attended as a lad. I thought she was going to faint from the utter horror of it all!

And this is in a rural town - in a frigging red state - in the Bible Belt.

I think the desirable desire to rely less on anecdote and more on the largest scale studies possible has the undesirable effects of reducing the availability of single-case studies, glossing over population differences and reducing the availability of information on rare conditions.

ok my work is with horses but YES vaccines fail. Seen this with west nile and eastern equine encephalitis. Show horses have to document their vaccine history and pass blood tests as fit to travel for health certs. SOooo they are pretty documented when things go to buggers.

i do lay up and post op care for vets. So i see survivors and hear about weird stuff from the vets i work with.

no clue about vaccine failure with people but having had aseptic meningital non specific viral encephalitis myself i can say its a nasty booger that will fuck up your life permanently, even when you have an optimal recovery. Warn her parents, shes not gonna be like she was before, and tell em she might need some help later.

my folks thought i was just a fuckup because i was a teenager and i was lucky someone stepped in and rehabbed me as a labor of love.

411 CC, Thank God your patient is doing well, indeed. I haven't heard of other meningococcus vaccine failures, but I guess it would be easy enough to do a search. I think it would be an interesting case study regardless. One of my residency classmates was despondent over sending a well-appearing febrile child home, only for her to come back hours later with meningococcemia. She ended up losing some limbs. This was almost 15 years ago. I know your patient is an adolescent, but the vaccines have taken a lot of the fright out of caring for febrile kids. It's an eye-opener to hear about your patient. Can't get too complacent.

Gushka, I know there are vaccine failures, in humans as well as horses...I was just wondering if anyone had seen or heard or read in the literature about this specific one

The scary thing with meningococcemia is not the meningitis, it's the generalized sepsis, which is what causes limb loss and kills most people who die from it.  The ones who present with meningitis usually live, albeit with long term issues (hearing loss, coordination issues, other neurologic badness).  The really unlucky ones go from perfectly healthy in the morning to in the morgue that night.

BAd for anyone who crosses him for sure. Golly! he will probably seem like sweetness and light for days now!  He was even uncommonly pleasant on his mission. Yes, the brown colt and his kitteh ranch are still going full force, but he is so so proud of himself as a big boy with a job besides watching over his tiny children.  When we take him out to work they run around the bullpen, catching bugs, sticking paws into gopher holes, and yapping at us like they are saying "We know youre in there!"

One even tried to jump into the corral with us. Could NOT believe it. i guess we are loved. And the whole time ellie watches us from her box stall where shes confined while healing, whinnying at us like we are traitors cheating on her, with another horse like this.

I had a friend die of it in China a few months ago. When they got him transfered to a hospital in Hong Kong they were trying to get him to The USA and asking for money to help. To my shame i prayed for him to die. Since i knew as bad as it had already gotten he wasnt him any more, and it was bad bad.  It took three days.

I offered money to help his family get back to the US. Its a fast bad disease.

As to meningitis, i know what it does. Intimately. Its a fucker. im epileptic and have several odd lingering problems.

And as my docs remind me 27 years after the event, i am the result people pray for. I am pretty damn lucky i found Grim, who has a fondness for mending broken things.

And now you all know why i keep working on hopeless broken horses. Because someone decided to give me a chance i decided to foster a brain injured kid and work on some animals that like me, other people had given up on. Because 27 years ago, NOBODY believed you could fix encephalitis. Except one mean old marine, who was just sure he could re-train what wasnt right.

I named him as a foal, "Gullati" which means Harrier. but since his injury hes so pretty but in a quiet way since hes coppery blood bay with three white feet with a narrow crooked scythe shaped blaze,  big brown eyes, one with a white sclera so hes got a "crazy eye" and a snip, so hes got a little bit pink nose. Theres a pic of him on the Yahoo group with Ellie you can tell its my horses... the colors are really vivid,  and the horses all have a metallic sheen.

458 Max PCs review was decent. And SHOULDN'T it be comparable or better than the 1100? Look i've been an AMD head for years. This was literally my first intel build ever. So for 15 years i've been building with AMD, but they are at least 2 generations behind technologically. The one bonus is the backward compatibility. I could drop this chip in my server (my old computer) after a bios update and it will work. that mobo is 3 years old? maybe 4 i'd have to think abt it. I can see them literally going out of business. And quickly too. Which will suck for all of us.

Posted by: viking at October 12, 2011 01:06 AM (OZymZ)

484 @491
I'm here (indigestion from the world's most delicious - but dangerous - Greek sausages).

I didn't watch the debate, but this is a report on the heckling from ABC (blog):

Tempers flared on stage at tonightÂ’s Bloomberg/Washington Post debate, as GOP rivals bashed each otherÂ’s economic policies. But it was Rick SantorumÂ’s remark about fathers taking responsibility for their children that resulted in an outcry from a young man in the crowd.

A stage audience member tells ABC News, “A guy stood up and he yelled, ‘Why didn’t you guys say anything when the gay soldier was booed.’ He was sitting about four rows back facing the stage. Then he yelled the f-word.”

The commotion caused Congresswoman Michelle Bachmann, who was next in line to answer a question, to say, “I’m sorry, Charlie. A little distraction.”

The interruption was in reference to last month’s debate in Orlando, when a gay soldier was booed by audience members after posing a question about ‘Don’t Ask Don’t Tell.’

Isn't it the job of the hosts of an event to put people who are out of line into line?  The debaters are guests at these events.  They have to follow the lead of the hosts, imho.

Along those lines, why isn't anyone criticizing the Family Research Council (who hosted the Values Voters forum) for allowing the (supposedly known to be inflammatory) Rev. Jefferes a platform for his (allegedly oh-so-wrong) opinions about the LDS Church?

Posted by: Y-not at October 12, 2011 01:29 AM (5H6zj)

493 I just don't find a debate between a professional radio personality, a former English major, and the Governor of Texas all that informative.  It's falling out the way I'd expect and it won't impact on my decision.  All I care about are results, not rhetoric.

I guess (from what I've gleaned) Newt's not so much a surprise in terms of his debate performance.  He's an intelligent, slick communicator.  To me the only surprise is that Newt has moved up to my number two slot, behind Perry.  But that's really more to do with the extra-debate performances of Cain, Bachmann, and Romney, than anything else.

But, yeah, I can see him as a good VP.

I don't understand the Cain love at all.  I looked him over a while back and found him sorely lacking.

And the thing is how many people are actually willing to defend the Mormon church?

They do some weird shit.  Mormons are provincial.  They're taught to be all nice and nieghborly with each other, but apprently less so with outsiders.  They have strict rules about what you can and can't study with regards to the history of the church.  Plus, hey, it was founded by a friggin' ex-con!

They do good stuff, too, but I'm just sayin'.

It was weird for that Jeffries dude to say they weren't Christian (I understand the argument and it seems largely academical) but honestly?  Who gives a shit what this guy said?  My Baptist aunt thinks everyone not Baptist is going straight to hell, what that Jeffries guy sais seemed mostly just...impolitic.

Underpants patrol?

Posted by: viking at October 12, 2011 01:53 AM (OZymZ)

509 They're taught to be all nice and nieghborly with each other, but apprently less so with outsiders.

It's really interesting living here (Utah County, which is about 75% LDS).  What I've observed is that members of the LDS Church are like a (basically loving but slightly dysfunctional) family.  They are harder on each other than they are on strangers, as long as those strangers are polite, anyway.  They know and are involved in each others' business way too much (part of the downside of lay ministry, imho, as well as their preoccupation with geneaology) and cut each other very little slack, but if you are an non-LDS who is friendly and open with them, they are nice to you.

Here's an example. Our next door neighbors have 11 kids, most are grown, but several have moved back into the house with their young kids in tow.  They are bursting at the seams in their house.  Literally, stuff is in their driveway and back yard from the latest moved in kids.  The patriarch is out of work (matriarch is a teacher, I believe) and they are leasing to own while they try to fix up the house (which I gather is something of a wreck).  But no one in the ward is helping them, even though we got several offers of help for moving in and getting settled this summer. I asked my friend (who is practicing LDS) about it and she said that you are not supposed to ask for help from your ward.  That seems backwards to me.

They do want to - and expect to - talk about religion a lot, but not in a proselytizing way.  But you can tell they cannot relate to atheists at all.  I think it would be very hard to be agnostic or atheist here.  My husband works in a secular organization, but his religion is brought up pretty frequently and has even been the subject of some criticism (a few people have literally felt free to say that they don't think the organization should have hired a non-LDS person).  I don't like that.  I grew up in a very secular mindset when it comes to work.

But overall, it's been fine.

Posted by: Y-not at October 12, 2011 02:01 AM (5H6zj)

510 Well, that went over.  I somehow thought 'underpants patrol' was particularly funny.

We enjoy the guys on scooters.  ;-)

They're good people and good neighbors (for the most part).  Also, it's pretty clear that Utah County is a particularly insular place.  It's like any 'ghetto' (and I don't mean that as a perjorative).  Even the people my hubby has hired who are LDS from Salt Lake County (which is about 50% LDS iirc) find the culture in Utah County to be unique.

I'd never convert, though.

519 I don't get the Fred Thompson comparisons.  IIRC, Fred didn't hit the campaign trail hard.  That has not been true of Perry.  He's out there.  He simply does not have great debate skills and his campaign's level of detail reflects his late entry into the race.

I'm still waiting to hear what Romney's "Repeal and Replace" plan is for Obamacare.  Last time I check (a couple of weeks ago) his website was still promising one but only providing a couple of general paragraphs.  I'm stunned that Romney is getting a pass on that issue.

520 "“Senator Murkowski has been a strong voice in the United States Senate for confronting the long-term economic challenges confronting her state and our nation today,” said Romney in a statement. “She understands the importance of making our country independent of foreign oil and recognizes we can do that by developing more sources of domestic energy.”"

522 @529
Yeah, Mitt is bad on energy issues, but he gets a pass on that, too, because... you know... Massachusetts!

The guy has millions of dollars and could live, literally, anywhere, but he had to live and govern in Massachusetts.  Right

523 Obama is a stuttering clustef*ck of a miserable failure.I really don't have anything else to say. I agree with what you say but can't you say anything else?

525 We enjoy the guys on scooters.  ;-)

They might all be nerds getting atomic wedgies every other day, but they seem like nice kids.  Except for when they wake me up in the afternoons.  Though there was that time they offered to do my lawn, which I politely declined.  Then I went back inside and watched The Omen.

I'd never convert, though.

Your old man would have to wear white shirts and skinny ties.  Who wants that?!?

526 Between the AGW revelations, the carbon trading fraud, and these solar ripoffs, I'm beginning to think the greenies are a little crooked.

527 Y-not, next time your up in SLC, stop by Lighthouse Ministries. They have some good books that will make your neighbors squirm.

528 No protesters seem to be wearing garments they crafted at home. Nazi Pelosi's Wall Street Mob is astro turf.
