— Ace The whole post-WeinerGate drama may finally be ending.

All Right, A Recap: Before the dic-pic, two accounts, purportedly created by teenagers, attempted to attract the attention of Weiner. He wound up following them both, and they followed him.
When you heard allusions to Weiner following underage girls, these were two of the girls meant. (A third girl, who we call "Ethel," is quite real and is 17. The cops visited her home two weeks ago. She is not part of this Betty and Veronica thing at all.)
We have called these two "Betty" and "Veronica" to protect their identities, as they are minors.
However, it is now clear they are not minors, or, if they're minors, they're at least not the minors they say they are. They're not real, they're sockpuppets. What similarities the supposed account-holders might have with their online personas is not known. Probably almost none.
The accounts had the names "Nikki Reid" and "Marienela Alecea" or something... something Spanish. I don't know. It's all gibberish to me.
Now, these accounts seemed to be fans of Weiner. However, they also offered information -- vague stuff -- the #bornfree crew, dirt on Weiner, but they never revealed the actual dirt. (To the best of my limited knowledge.)
Post dic-pic, they tried to push claims on Breitbart, too. But Breitbart, for whatever reason, declined to use their claims. He couldn't verify it and besides he didn't need it.
Now, several days later, the people running these accounts agree to talk to Tommy Christopher. They claim that Weiner has never been anything but a gentleman, and the #bornfree crew are big meanies who harass them, and, improbably, that Andrew Breitbart and Dana Loech are the real bad guys here because they attempted to induce the girls to lie and claim that... Weiner was attempting to recruit them for an underage prostitution ring.

Although I've gotten into spats with Lee Stranahan on Twitter, he has been dogged in questioning Christopher's reporting, doubting the girls where who they say they were (Content Warning for Profanity-Filled Drama As Christopher Curses at Stranahan for Calling Him Out Publicly).
Tommy Christopher told people that charge on the phone (he never wrote it in a report) and now says that wasn't really the charge, but apparently something at that level of absurdity.
In other words, the accounts sure seemed to be on Team Weiner-- defending him and maybe trying to push a false story on the #bornfree crew, and then Breitbart, to embarrass the right.
Now, flash forward to last Friday. A NYT reporter named Jen Preston checks the drivers licences that the girls faxed to Tommy Christopher to confirm their IDs and discovers they are fraudulent.
Jen Preston says in her article the accounts were created to dig dirt on Weiner, and strongly implies they are part of a right-wing covert action sting against Weiner.
Further, Gennette Cordova has chatted with these accounts. We're not sure of what was said. But she says now (quoted by Jen Preston) that she quickly guessed the accounts were fake and warned Weiner to not communicate with them.
Now, this is interesting to people like me, because at the current moment Jen Preston seems to be going for the "rightwing operative" angle. Not that there's anything wrong with that, necessarily, but I really don't feel like hearing the left whine about Dirty Tricks for twenty fucking years, either.
On the other hand, some people believe the fake accounts were actually created as a leftwing operation to punk #bornfree/Breitbart.
As it is likely the creator of at least one of the accounts (maybe both) will soon be exposed by someone, we should know the answers here soon.
Plus, the father of the girl who created one account -- I guess he's the father, or something, who knows, we don't know who these people are -- is raging against Gennette Cordova for, I'm guessing, throwing his daughter under the NYT bus, and threatens to release emails she sent to him and his daughter. I guess. I don't know because I just heard about the "father's" anger. He's been a mysterious figure throughout this and his Twitter account has always been locked (only people he permits to see it can see it). I have no idea what he's saying, but I guess he's talking to people.
Anyway, it's drama, and it should all be over soon.
My speculation that "someone like Gennette" could be behind the sockpuppets was wrong, I'm pretty sure. At least, it certainly doesn't seem to be someone exactly like Gennette! It's not her.
We'll see if it turns out to be someone like her or not.

* The "girls" here appear to be a complete fiction.
Unresolved Questions:
* What was the motivation of the persons behind the sockpuppets -- rightwing, leftwing, other? To Get Weiner? To Get Bornfree? Gossip? Attention? Getting a juicy story for publication in the media?
* Are Gennette's public representations accurate?
* Jen Preston has been greasing the hell out of her source Gennette, even quoting her in her recent article exposing the "girls" as fake. Is Jen Preston wise to have relied on Gennette? Was Gennette straight with her, or did she lead Jen Preston down a crooked path? Will she soon have to do a Tommy Christopher Walk-Back?
* Does any of this have anything to do with Stranahan's White Whale -- PatriotUSA76? Or is that still just what it seemed to be?
A Question That Seems Resolved:
* None of this actually involves the dic-pic, or the Meghan Broussard dic-pics. Or, so it seems. Weiner confessed to the dic-pic. I suppose it still remains possible that the sockpuppets were created by someone who had heard Meghan Broussard's tale and, knowing about that, tried to catch Weiner. But it must be remembered that even if they did try to catch Weiner -- they failed. None of this actually has anything to do with Weiner's guilt.
It's really just about the weird, cloak-and-dagger games partisans play on the internet.

This is like something out of a bad Disney-channel original movie, where the bad girls want their leader to win the Prom Queen crown, but they know that everyone is going to vote for the girl-next-door heroine. They figure that humiliating the heroine is just going to make her sympathetic, so they frame the heroine by making it look like the heroine tried to humiliate the bad girl leader. But it doesn't work, because the heroine doesn't rise to the bait, and the bad girl leader ends up having to resign from Congress after admitting to being a mega-douchebag.
(That last bit may be a bit of Weinergate projection on my part).
It's so utterly juvenile.

On one hand, I wouldn't feel any obligation to bloggers or press to give them my real identity and get mixed up in this sort of fiasco if I were legitimately involved.
On the other hand, if these people were trolling Weiner or Breitbart, you'd think one or the other side would want them outed. If they were trying to set up Breitbart and he suspects it, I think he'd make a big deal about it. If they were assuming a false persona to set up Weiner, could it be some sort of federal offense? (Now that I think about it maybe not, the perverted justice people do this all the time on TV, and I don't see why congresspeople would get a special exemption).
While these accounts seemed to be on Team Weiner at the end, it seems bizarre that someone would have laid the groundwork so long in advance to try to get the right to bite on false Weiner stories when everything broke.
Either way, I look forward to an explanation.

I think most here have their heads spun so much by this that they have no clue who they should even consider not alleging made the sockpuppets if you asked them.

I think Ace does indeed have a time machine, however, when he travels back in time, someone invariably trips on a cast off Val-U-Rite bottle or stumbles on a hobo carcass after his return to present time, which alters the future.

Everything the in From section of an email header can be forged just like the from section of a mailed envelope. And it isn't hard to do.

But one thing he did say was this schoolmarm lecture about how people shouldn't talk about this or that because it's so confusing. Who is Lee to make that demand?
And Lee is admitting he lied to Razor, calling it inconsequential. He's really showing a character defect here, justifying it by saying he was 'poking' him to see what he would do. Much of his commentary on Patriot has seemed obviously meant to provoke Patriot into defending himself from lies. 'Tactically'.
What's so frustrating about this is how important Lee's work on Pigford is. He's an admitted liar who wants answers on a scandal... and who is to say he wouldn't use that tactic to force a Pigford source to comply with his demand for disclosure of some point they wish to keep to themselves?
It's really annoying. I wanted this guy to have credibility.

Money. He's an opportunist. I like the guy, and I have absolutely no problem with his wish to make a living doing this, but he doesn't hesitate to channel publicity into his other ventures (donations for documentaries or his class on blogging).
He's invested in certain aspects of the story, and how this is an opportunity to build his brand, and he's cutting corners. Forcing a source to break anonymity by lying about them is a hell of a corner to cut, though.

Actually, he's a Deputy DA. They can find arrest and court records if they have the SSN, but they can't go on fishing expeditions. Usage of the databases is monitored, and they can get in big trouble for searches not related to their work.
So any information he has is the result of hard investigation, just like any investigative journalist. He does have access to Lexis/Nexis, so that would likely be useful in this case.

Also, it took 3 fucking weeks to figure out where those pics came from, when about 10 seconds on tineye.com should have solved that mystery before weener even resigned? It seems like ace wants to break a big story somehow, somewhere, after having failed to have anything at all to actually do with the weener resignation other than to link the people who actually DID have something to do with it, so now he's flogging this crap.

He's not alone, but it's definitely a swamp he's in. The Patterico/Christopher/Stranahan/Preston, etc. posts, tweets and links are nearly impossible to keep track of, chronologically or otherwise.
Most of the people who post "new" information spend about two seconds on that info. and the rest of their time fighting with each other over who has been "Right All Along!". Ace of Spades is a good central point from which to look at all the various theories, stories, sources etc. It's not his obligation to solve the whole ridiculous puzzle, even if he could.

She dated him and then married him. In retrospect, she saw the signs: time gaps, inconsistent stories, stories that didn't make sense, she probably even caught him in what she then considered, and he convinced her, harmless fibs... and then she marries him and he can't hide it as well. The lies become more intense and obvious. She catches him surfing and chatting and sexting. She starts to confront him and he tries to deflect and becomes defensive and angry trying to turn things around on her, accusing her of being controlling ball buster, she's never home, a nag or a bitch, etc. And then she starts to snoop and spy and she catches him red handed. Bet she even put eyes on his computer/electronics, hacks his passwords. And they start to argue bitterly and fight. Then she starts to confess things to Hillary. Together they tell him to clean up his act or he is going down. He tells them to piss off and bring it on ... and the rest, as they say, is history. He's guilty, no doubt about it, but this has the smell of Hillary and a woman scorned all over it. In Hillary's psychopathic, deluded world you don't mess with someone she considers hers. Anyway, that's my theory because the Hillary connection is just too obvious to ignore.

The most recent development appears to be that there's a bus speeding toward Seattle getting ready to run Gennette Cordova under it. Whether that bus is full of lies and trickery or something else remains to be seen. But the scene is likely going to be very gory, which might distract some folks from seeing or even thinking about who was driving it.
Yesterday's episode could be called The Sockfather - Betty's supposed father, johnreid9, magically started tweeting bloggers on Twitter after speaking with nobody on it but Mediaite's Tommy Christopher, Gennette Cordova, the Sockfather of Veronica and, maybe, a seemingly real high school student who ought to be code named Archie (because every story with a Betty and Veronica needs an Archie). If the Sockfather is to be believed, he's a New York Times hating father of a Weiner lover - a pretty rare species indeed.
There may be a second installment of Sockterpiece Theater at some point - the Sockfather Part 2, featuring Veronica's Sockfather and a whole cast of absurd characters who may or may not exist pushing a storyline for reasons that will likely remain unclear.

It's worth looking into beyond your personal guess, though. Weiner had online accounts that law enforcement should look into.
You dismiss sexting a 17 year old because it would be legal at 18. Well, it's not legal at 17 and it's morally abhorrent at 18. We drew the line in the sand well beyond what's wrong. If he broke the law, he shouldn't get away with it because of a huge spin operation or his political celebrity status. If you were so accused, with this level of cause, you'd be investigated.
Part of the point here is that Weiner shouldn't be above the law.
