Victor Davis Hanson on the paralytic western society.
We seem able to admit that massive federal and state entitlements have created a sense of dependency, a loss of self-respect and initiative, and a breakdown of the family, yet we still seem to fear that trimming the subsidies would lead to some sort of cold-turkey hyper-reaction. We assume that society is to blame for disaffected youth and therefore are hesitant to use commensurate force to quell the violence or even to make it clear that perpetrators are responsible for their own conduct. Yet at some point — when the violence reaches middle-class communities or, in serial fashion, downtown or suburban stores — we likewise assume that sufficient force will be used. Sociological exegesis will go out the window. Reality has a way of dispelling such cognitive luxuries.Reality always wins. Always.
The Brits are discovering the truth of Dr. Hanson's words as we speak.
Public-sector workers are slowly and painfully coming to realize that the times, they are a-changin'.
I am often accused of being overly pessimistic about our future (both financially and socially), but it's just a matter of looking at the numbers, and the attitudes and behaviors of the voters in this country. The worst-case scenario is the most likely one.
You gotta love James Galbraith -- heÂ’s an idiot in fair weather and in foul. A veritable Mount Everest made of pure stupid. This may be the best comedy bit you'll read all day.
The Japanese demographic collapse has been the talk of bond markets for almost twenty years now. Everyone keeps predicting doom for Japan has it's debt-to-GDP rises above 200%, yet somehow Japan keeps avoiding the headsman's axe. How can this happen? The answer is that the Japanese people themselves buy most Japanese debt...but Japan is greying, and all those savers are going to be drawing down their savings as they get old. When Japan has to go to the international markets to roll their debt, they are in for a world of hurt.
I've been saying it for years: Democrats will die on the entitlement hill. Harry Reid's picks for the so-called "super committee" make this abundantly clear. By picking hard-core leftist ideologues (Murray) and statist harness-bulls (Kerry), Reid is signalling that he intends no movement at all on the entitlement front. If any reforms to entitlements are to come, the GOP is going to have to force the issue. And it's not clear to me that the GOP has the will or the ability to do so.
The Euro project will fail because “Europe” is not a nation. It never has been, and it probably never will be. If political union is forced on the people by fiat, it will fail; and the denouement will be a bloody one.
Medicare vs private insurance. Predictably, medicare loses.
Fed: The economy's gonna suck for at least two more years. Embrace the suck.
The stock market recovered a lot of ground in yesterday's trading as panic-selling reversed and sheepish investors got back in.
Once again, and as usual, California screws themselves. But L.A. refuses to go quietly; the broke municipality recently approved plans for a new $1B NFL stadium. For a team they don't have yet. Budgets are for suckers!
BofA sells a bunch of shit to Fannie to go with Fannie's already-comprehensive shit-collection. And the cool thing? We get to pay for it! Yay!
UPDATE 1: Hey, it's not all DOOM up in here. The unions took a giant shot in the nuts in Wisconsin last night, so that's something to celebrate.
UPDATE 2: Spending yourself rich didn't work, after all. But...but...all the smart people said it would work!
UPDATE 3: Doubling down on zero.
This is what a central bank does when it wants to appear to do something to help the economy but has already fired most of its ammunition.
UPDATE 4: Via slublog -- Fear the Fed!

The economics of riots.
That is something everyone should inherently know. Poverty has nothing to do with riots. Whaether or not rioters are punished has a LOT to do with it. The Londoners know that rioters will not be punished because they have seen decades of football hooligans getting off.We have started seeing the same thing here with the commies and anarchists whenever we have a "G" meeting here.
The corrupt Mayors of the democommie urban centers should take note of that.

Gardner, MA
"A week ago, when only three people had taken out nomination papers for three positions on the School Committee, Mayor Mark P. Hawke suggested to the City Council it was time for a raise. Yesterday he suggested more than tripling the pay.
The current pay of the School Committee is $1,500. It is higher than in most other communities in northern Worcester County. The mayor said he has suggested it go up to $5,000.
“I suggested $5,000 as a starting point for discussion,” Mr. Hawke said.
The mayor said the six-member School Committee has not received a raise in many years, and that may be putting off people considering taking on a job that means many nights working at regular and subcommittee meetings."

Excuse me. Since you don't know that an alarm is "false" until after you get there, should all alarms be treated as real until you know otherwise? And if this is such a big burden on the police department (which I kind of doubt, but I don't know, so I'll take them at their word), why not redirect those extra millions we apparently had to build unwanted, unneeded bike paths and give it to the police department?
Now I'll go back and read the comments to see if anyone has said anything interesting this morning.

RE: the UK riots.
My British-born mother - who's lived here since the 1950s - is getting very annoyed with the people at her workplace. They keep asking her, "What's going on with London? Why are they rioting? What do you think about it?" To which her (internal) response is, "Oh, I think it's fantastic. I love to see the places I knew as a little girl going up in flames at the hands of a generation of selfish, entitlement-minded cretins. It fills me with a special kind of joy to see how far my home country has fallen! So much for the sun never setting on the British empire!"
What she actually says (because she's much more polite than I would be) is, "I don't really know. I don't particularly watch the news."
Seriously, what do they expect her answer to be? She came here with her family in 1957, before Britain had gone completely 'round the bend, and she hasn't been back since the 1960s. She's not exactly a new immigrant fresh off the boat with her finger on the pulse of modern Britain.
I don't think I'd be able to resist saying, "I say right on! Bring those capitalist pigs down! No more tippin' o' the hat from me, Guvna!" just to mess with their heads.

Bingo.
I was talking about Nutter's sermon yesterday with my dad. We both think he's spot-on, but my dad thinks he'll be able to get away with his comments because Nutter's black. "Oh no no no," I argued. "He'll get away with it for a few days. Just until the national race-based establishment gets ahold of it. Then he'll be dragged over the coals for being 'divisive' and 'exclusionary' in only calling out the 'sons and daughters' of Philly's 'black community.' He'll end up doing a mea culpa walkback of his remarks, during which he'll have to mention that 'black kids' aren't the only ones causing trouble. It'll happen. Just give it time."
My dad still disagrees. Sadly, I think my dad is wrong as wrong can be.

The turmoil on Wall Street has hit the nation's largest public pension fund, which lost about $18 billion off the value of its stock portfolio from July 1 until Tuesday's market rebound.
The losses for the California Public Employees' Retirement System came just three weeks after it and California's teacher pension fund each reported annual investment gains of more than 20 percent in fiscal year that ended June 30.

They can merely plead that "he was a good boy who fell in with a bad lot". The fact of his death will end the riots toot sweet. So you are facing what is known as a Cost Benefit Analysis. How much cost is the riot costing per hour versus how much possible pay outs his death would cause the state. This is England, I don't think they have a Lottery Legal System like we do. So cap a couple and advertise it.

VDH's column about the woman who was killed by the gang banger is haunting me right now. There's a comment in there about how the police said that she was in the wrong place at the wrong time and VDH's response was that no, she wasn't. She was at a car wash where she had every right to be. Something about that resonates with me, especially in light of other current world events. It's back to the point that those who are abiding by civilized rules are the ones who are being destroyed. The implications of that are deeply, deeply worrying.

The Brits are buying Amazon out of baseball bats.
First off, it's great that Brits are finally realizing that their government doesn't give a rat's ass about doing its duty and protecting them, and they're starting to want to protect themselves again. I consider that progress, because baby steps are still steps. But...
...This means that those doing the purchasing either expect the riots to continue long enough for their baseball bats to be delivered before they're over, or expect more riots in the future. If they DO expect to receive their bats before the riots are over...
... they also foolishly expect that the Royal mail will be delivered amidst mass anarchy in the streets. This is doubly foolish given the point made above RE: the British government's attitude towards its own people.
It's quaint, in a darkly comic kind of way.

The original Mayor Daley had it right when dealing with the scum in 1968.
The Mayor, obviously angry ... in his 15-minute press conference, in which he declined to discuss any other topic ... Daley opened his blast at police by saying he had given Conlisk
"instructions which I thought were the instructions on the night of the 5th, but which were not carried out. I said to him very emphatically and very definitely that an order be issued immediately under his [Conlisk's] signature to shoot to kill any arsonist or anyone with Molotov cocktails in their hand to fire a building because they are potential murderers, and to also order police to shoot to maim or cripple anyone looting any stores in the city"

You think it's just blacks doing that? Take a look at the entire Democrat Party, irrespective of skin color.
My proposed silver lining is that everyone grows a bullshit detector and uses it. No more special classes of people, with built in excuses. Equality before the law. Do that and see how fast the demonazis desolve. Every time a dem proposes a special program for special people, just ask them why they wish to discriminate? Works for class and race.

That incentive system has been in place for pretty much all of human history. What changed was that we 'outsourced' our protection (from criminals) from ourselves to the government.
Police (as in: Police Department) only really means "Civil (or City) Administration" Original police departments were only concerned with "public order" (that is, getting drunks off the street- either home or into the drunk tank, stopping riots, etc.), they didn't do much of what we consider "police work" now- stopping and investigating crime.
They didn't do that because they weren't expected to. Now, some very, very good things came from that change, but the "slippery slope" people- once again- turned out to be right. By allowing all criminal enforcement to be done by the state (instead of by citizens, perhaps with some specific kind of oversight), we've gotten to the point where any victim of a crime is, in some manner, "to blame."
Now, I'm not advocating pure vigilante justice, or even a significant move from today's paradigm is good or needed, but when I give up some of my power (my Liberty) to the State, I should be able to expect the State to protect me. However, the State, despite it's size, is not capable of protecting everyone all the time. So the question is which is more important, keeping "vigilante justice" off the table, or letting criminals know that there's a good chance their next victim might just shoot them instead?
I will point this out, too: even in bloodiest days of the wild west (were "vigilante justice" really did kind of exist), murders in fairly big cities were counted with single digits. Double digits meant it had been an incredibly bad year.

(CNN Money) The risk of double dip recession is rising.
And while economists disagree on just how likely the U.S. economy is to fall into another downturn, they generally agree on one thing -- a new recession would be worse than the last and very difficult to pull out of.
"Going back into recession now would be scary, because we don't have the resources or the will to respond, and our initial starting point is such a point of weakness," said Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody's Analytics. "It won't feel like a new recession. It would likely feel like a depression."
Zandi said the recent sell-off in stocks have caused him to raise the odds of a new recession to 33% from 25% only 10 days ago.
Only a 33% chance? No wonder why the economic "experts" see increased unemployment as "unexpected" every time it happens

I didn't know the Supreme's had ruled that, but I knew that was the rule. And it's in complete contradiction of the police state (note the little 'p') we currently have. I'm encouraged, in lots of ways, not to carry a weapon for personal defense. I'm encouraged not to "encourage" or "provoke" an attacker/mugger/whatever. If I get mugged, the Police will put Top. Men. on finding my assailant, but if I fight back and he gets hurt, I'll get sued (and, if there aren't enough witnesses, possibly thrown in jail). If I'm going to give up all of that, they have a resultant obligation to protect me.
Now, a lot of that is mitigated for me, personally, because I live in Texas, and we're kind of a "shoot first, question the body" kind of State, but I do know that to be true in many other areas.

but when I give up some of my power (my Liberty) to the State, I should be able to expect the State to protect me.
When seconds count, the police are only minutes away! That, btw, is not a slam on the police. I do not want to live in a society where the police are only seconds away from everyone all the time.
The issue in the UK is that the State took away the power to protect oneself without assuming the responsibility of protection. Anyone who thought that would end well is an utter, utter idiot.
The bat thing fascinates me because I'm very certain that the use of bats for self-protection would fall within the realm of can't do that, dear boy. The fact that the British public is saying well yeah fuck that is a minorly hopeful sign. Of course, I am Steynlevel pessimistic about what will happen.

Pretty pleased with it. Of course, CLP (Break-free) is a good go-to if you don't have to worry about sand. MILTEC-1 is also really good stuff.
WD-40 has several problems beyond gumming things up... it burns, really well. No point in adding carbon. Same goes for cooking oil--although PAM for grilling might work, as it's made for higher temps. I prefer to stick with lube made for the equipment I'm using, though. In the sandbox, I used remington dry lube religiously and exclusively and never had a malfunction due to lubrication issues.

That's great!
When we were moving down to Houston (driving from Boston) ten years ago or so we stopped in Lafayette, LA for the night. Had dinner at Randoll's (dall's?). It was really magical somehow. There were bus loads of folks there from various parishes, lots of whom were speaking French or Franglais (which we kind of understand). Grandpas dancing with their grand kids and great food. Really wonderful.
Hubby overheard them talking about "the redhead" (me; I gather it's something of a commodity down there) and as we were leaving for the night the folks were talking about the "grenouille de bois" (tree frogs) who were making a racket.

From the NYT:
"The Federal Reserve’s finding on Tuesday that there is little prospect for rapid economic growth over the next two years was the latest in a summer of bad economic news. One administration official called the atmosphere around the president’s economic team “angry and morose.”
On Tuesday afternoon, the White House announced that Mr. Obama would be taking an “economic bus tour” in the Midwest next week, with stops in Illinois, Iowa and Minnesota.
Though the trip is not a campaign event, it could help shape votersÂ’ perceptions of whether Mr. Obama is more concerned about being remembered for that one good term or whether he wants another four years in the Oval Office no matter what."
Amazing how well they shovel this shit. Not a campaign event? Good God these heathens are brazen.

WD-40 is great for the OUTSIDE of a gun, if you're going to be keeping it somewhere damp.
But it's just easier to keep all your lubricants the same. Right now I'm considering stocking up on that orange stuff they put on movie theater popcorn to use as lubricant... because when the cops ask for your alibi, you can claim you were at the movies!

See, I'd think cricket bats would be BETTER, since they're flat and thus cover more area for a greater spread of pain. But then again, if you want to really HURT someone, the same amount of pressure in a more concentrated area is the way to go. Also, you can't really cave someone's skull in with a cricket bat like you can a baseball bat. Or so I've heard. <_<
As for croquet mallets, meh. The handles would snap. Now POLO mallets you MIGHT be able to use, provided you were taking down rioting yutes from a moving vehicle, like a bicycle. Or a tank.

I've taken and taught more than a few classes on fighting with an entrenching tool when I was a wee grunt. It's the lovely sharp edge that's my favorite part, versus the blunt force trauma possibilities.
And it's a lot easier, not to mention more productive, to stab someone in the gut or base of the throat with the point than to connect with a haymaker.

ONE GOOD TERM!? What good term? The only positive term that comes to mind when I think of Obama is, "soon-to-be-former President."

Actually, I think it's great. There's still a lot of "Bush Hate" on both sides of the political spectrum (though not as much as there once was). Having someone - anyone - with the surname Bush come out with an endoresement for you is a double-edged sword. And considering Huntsman is the candidate the left would LOVE to foist on us, this is like candy. Bush is the left's antimatter.

Rick Perry.
Think about it, though: everyone knows Huntsman is going precisely nowhere. He's not even a blip- even the part of "Next Turn" doesn't think it's his turn, so he's not going to get the nod. By endorsing Huntsman, what he's really saying to the rest of the field is, "Don't ask."

I have been saying for a while - the people who are doing the right things and playing by the rules are going to get boned. Inflation will tear up those savings that aren't making any interest. Provided we survive Barackolypse (cats and dogs living together - end times), investments in rental real estate may be the smartest choice at this point. Insure that you finance with fixed rate interest and select proven rental locations. At that point you will be applauding every increase in inflation as your property's value will increase with it. I am thinking beach houses may be the investment given the amount of leverage that went into beach properties in the last decade and amount of distressed properties. Just a thought. Its that 70s show all over again.

Los Angeles' if we build it they will come strategy will, sadly, work for them. The Jags might be an easy pickup. However, the economic benefits they offer a city such a Jacksonville won't even cause a ripple in a city such as L.A. or a state such as California. The taxpayers will pay for the stadium to be built and then, when they get a team, they will have to split the parking revenue with the team and will have to foot the cost for the concessionairs. And, they will probably offer huge tax incentives to the team just to get them on-board.
Do the folks in L.A. really want to see a local NFL game that badly?

"The real estate market is already in the deepest depression in modern U.S. history. If you think it can't get any worse, think again. In several cities, the real estate market is about to drop even more. Home values in many of those cities, such as Las Vegas, have already collapsed as unemployment has shot higher. And with no hope of quick recovery, housing prices are expected to continue to fall. 24/7 Wall St. identified ten housing markets that are expected to drop by at least another 10% by 2012."
