On "I Question the Timing"
— Ace

The left made such a ridiculous habit of calling "I question the timing" that Google is full of references to that stupid catchphrase from this site alone.

Always mocking the left for it.

It became such a source of fun we didn't even bother writing "I question the timing." We just shorthanded it as "IQTT!"

But it's suddenly smart when we do it?

Here is my question:

If you say this date was picked for political opportunism, then I need for those claiming this to tell me: Name a date upon which you think the attack should have been scheduled, when it would not have been politically opportunistic.

You don't like May 1. Fine. Then I'm going to need for you to go ahead and name a date where you wouldn't suspect political opportunism.

Give me your date. If not May 1, then when? January 26th? February 10th?

September 15th, 2010?! But note if it's any time before November 2010, then it's politically better timed to influence the last elections.

If you can't tell me a date upon which this event would not be "politically timed," then all you are saying is that you wish it had not happened at all. Which is bizarre.

Or you're saying Obama should have let bin Ladin live until after the November 2012 elections, so that he wouldn't have this to his credit.

But why? Why should he do that? Why let Osama live that long? Just so there is no poll-boost for Obama?

Wouldn't that be politically timed -- but to help Republicans?

There is one version of this claim that is possible-- but it's not about political timing.

If you postulate that Obama is risk-averse and weak, then Obama may have refused to act, like Clinton did, out of fear and out of weakness.

But only when he saw his presidency slipping away from him did he agree to take a chance and authorize the raid.

Now, that is possible, I admit. But in that case, it's not Obama picking and choosing which month he'll decide to get bin Ladin; that's Obama's natural weakness finally being overcome by panic at being Jimmy Carter II.

Further, in that case, political pressure actually helped produce a good result by overcoming Obama's built-in weaknesses and flaws.

We may yet wind up hearing about that -- about the CIA coming to him multiple times saying "We're pretty damn sure about this" and Obama voting present as always, saying, "Give me more evidence."

Perhaps that went on for months and months. Obama always refusing to make a decision.

This is possible. It doesn't contradict what we know, and plays into what we think we know about Obama's indecisiveness and weakness.

And we saw the exact same thing happen with Clinton.

But this stuff about him being able to to take out Osama at anytime he wanted and choosing, for maximum political impact, May 1, 2011, as the "best" month for doing this?

No, the best month for doing this is either August or September or October of 2012, taking all the oxygen out of the presidential race and showing Obama in his finest moment right before the election.

The next-best time would be August or September or October of 2010 -- having the same effect, and boosting Democrats running for Congress.

But now?

Now, six months after one election and eighteen months away from the next?

Again: If you're bothered by the timing what you're really bothered by is the bigger-picture timing: This happened on Obama's watch, period, and not during better periods for us, like Bush's terms or Obama's successor's term.

There is no date you can actually name where you'd say this was not politically timed.

As is typical in conspiracy theories, the theory is unfalsifiable by design and deliberately vague on details.

If you really want to push this, name me a date upon which there would be no "political benefit" and then we can talk about that.

If Bush... Caught a lucky intel break and discovered this just before the 2008 elections, and acted promptly -- would that have been done for political impact?

Or does this only apply to the other party?

A lot of people on the left agree with the IQTT brigade. The left are, in fact, the founding members of the IQTT brigade. This is their number one export to the cybernetic world.

They also think that this is a great thing to say, but only applies to the other party. Just because.

It seems to me that if there's an inconsistent and illogical kneejerk response beloved by some on the left, as well as some on the right, and the only disagreement between them is upon which politicians to play the card -- that seems to me pretty good evidence that there's nothing rational behind this except partisan pique.

Andrew Sullivan, 2006: He questioned the timing of the SkyBomb busts -- in which British and US agents acted against terrorists planning detonations of up to ten transatlantic flights, about simultaneously-- suggesting maybe it had to do with Tony Blair's desire to congratulate Joe Lieberman for having already won a primary against a man supported by Sullivan.

rt. I wonder if this story is going to get more interesting. I wonder if Lieberman's defeat, the resilience of Hezbollah in Lebanon, and the emergence of a Hezbollah-style government in Iraq had any bearing on the decision by Bush and Blair to pre-empt the British police and order this alleged plot disabled. I wish I didn't find these questions popping into my head.

Me too, Andrew. Me too.

I responded to him:

Nope, no evidence [that this plot was real]. All just a confabulation of Bush and Blair to, ummmmm, help Joe Lieberman. Yeah. The Brits are all queer for Joe Lieberman. He's like the fucking BEATLES, man, only without the baggage of Ringo.

And help Joe Lieberman after the election, I kept noting: This whole I Question the Timing thing doesn't even make sense if the timing is poor, as it was in this case, and as it is in the killing of bin Ladin.

Explanation for the Timing? Suppose Obama is doing what he usually does -- playing golf and voting present.

He could have ordered this before but has resisted, being risk averse. Doesn't want to risk a helicopter raid into the heart of Pakistan.

Now WikiLeaks reveals the name of the courier.

The administration denies it... but they know it's true.

What do they do? With the courier's name out there, the courier must start suspecting that something bad is coming.

They may lose their opportunity for the raid.

So Obama finally orders it.

I obviously don't mind narratives that play Obama as weak, timid, or stupid.

I just object to the goofy ones that are just all made up and illogical to boot.

Let me supply my thoughts.

Barack Obama, thank you for killing Bin Laden, no questions asked, I will always be thankful for it. Thank You!

However on every other one of your policies, FU.

I think there is a happy middle ground to be had here.

15 Add: why would Obama schedule it on the High Holy Day of Communism?

Also, this is a transient bounce.  We still have the Summer of $5 Gas ahead, and inflation (measured the old way) is still double digits.  And GDP growth is anemic.

Killing Osama is not going to fix stagflation.

20 I don't care about the timing. I *do* suspect Obama didn't really have his heart in it, though. If he knew of OBL's location since last year and didn't do anything, think what would have happened to his re-election numbers if somebody leaked the fact closer to the election. And, of course, re-election is much more important than any qualms about killing a terrorist leader, no matter what one thinks of muslim terrorists.

Just saying.

I question the timing of the assassination.

I think Obama killed Bin Laden on sunday when it became clear the Capitals were going to lose game two against tampa bay. He wanted to use the assassination to distract the people of the greater Metro D.C. area from the fact the Capitals were going to get knocked out of the playoffs again.

25 I noticed that this particular topic has you pretty miffed, there Ace.  I don't disagree, one bit.

I do, however, think that he wouldn't have pulled the trigger without visual evidence of his presence there were he living high on poll numbers and such.

This incident was risky and yes, I give him full credit for giving the go on it.  It was a good call that needed to be made.

I DON'T think that he had a time to choose from.  He was approached by top intelligence officials that gave it to him in a 'Now or Never' way that he needed to jump on.  I don't think he said go because his poll numbers suck right now.

26 Every decision made by this administration has a political component to it, and we have abundant evidence of that. But just because the political ramifications of an action were considered doesn't mean that the decision was flawed. It is blatantly obvious that killing UBL was the correct thing to do. The timing may have been manipulated, but so what? So they pulled the trigger on Sunday instead of Tuesday. BFD.

38 The conspiracy theory charge simply doesn't work. If Obama really wanted to boost his poll numbers, he would help repeal ObamaCare and endorse large spending cuts. The fact that his poll numbers are still dragging because only 40-45% of Americans approve of his performance in handling the economy is telling. So he got a slight bounce out of this (1-9%) and more people see him as a decisive leader, but that's about it. At this point, 2012 is all about the economy.

I think it's likely that they planned the political calendar around the military calendar; not the other way around.  Politics is optics, and they are doing a good, if skeevy job, of maximizing the optics on this military operation.

20 Agree. He didn't want to do this. I thought there was something wrong with his speech the other night. He seemed less douchebaggy than usual. More aggressive, like he was daring someone not to like it--sorta how my teenagers get when I catch them doing something that they don't approve of and I do, like reading a book or newspaper, or watching the news, using the subjunctive properly or not wasting money.

It was almost like he was angry that he had to say that he got Osama and was therefore feeling hostile. I sorta expected him to say, "And fuck you america for putting me in this position you bunch of vengence seeking, culturally backward rubes."

The delay was about him not wanting to be that guy in a flag lapel pin having used the military to kill a guy who just wants better things for islamists.

58 The problem with the whole conspiracy theories are all bogus is some of them aren't. Is there anyone on the planet who believes that Bill Clinton decided to launch a cruise missile attack on an aspirin factory on the very day Monica Lewinsky was going back to the grand jury? Even lefties don't buy it. But there has to be some level of proof, some quid pro quo, some reason for the series of events to play out as they did, at the time they did for the theory to be remotely plausible. Obama not only doesn't gain by launching this on May 1 it is arguably a bad time to do this as there are no imminent elections and any bump he gets is liable to dissipate before then.

Oh good God, here's what someone posted on a non-political forum I visit...

"What if the disclosure that OBL is dead was a Republican and their corporate puppet handlers plant, a ruse, a ploy, to bring to the surface those like us who do not believe the "official" report? Is the next step in this ruse to expose the administration's lie? What if Obama doesn't know this is a ruse but is believing what he is being told by his handlers? A strong presidential candidate, no matter the party, will be handled by the Corporate Puppeteers.

OBL was dead years ago but his death couldn't be disclosed because Bush/Cheney and their corporate handlers wanted to enter Iraq, additional oil fields was part of the plan as well as control of the real estate to put in pipelines to sea ports. So far that plan didn't work out as well as expected so what is to be done with the knowledge OBL is dead? Could it be used it to discredit the sitting president with more Trumped up disclosures?"

71 Kinda fucked up we can't just bask in the fact OBL is not stealing our air anymore, because one side wants to jump up and down yelling "yay Obama! Fuck Bush!" like Obama came up with the plan himself and fastroped out of a chopper first, and the other side has to sit vainly on the sidelines and point to 9 years of effort that went into it. One of the things I hated about the liberals is whenever GWB would do anything good it was always aimed solely for political gain.

I give the devil his due; Obama didn't fuck this one up as usual.

Did he lead in the Seal team? No. He might have even done better by waiting to release the info until the intel could have been dissiminated. But still, he did good.

Will this save him? No, it helps, but it wasn't his numbers on counterterrorism that were driving him down. Expect a bounce putting him maybe as high as the 60's and then back down...

If you postulate that Obama is risk-averse and weak, then Obama may have refused to act, like Clinton did, out of fear and out of weakness.

But only when he saw his presidency slipping away from him did he agree to take a chance and authorize the raid.

When you consider President Present has gotten us into double digit inflation, skyrocketing energy costs, skyrocketing food costs, massive debt, and The Donald brow beating him to get his birth certificate, Barry had to do something, so that he'd have time to repair his image. But its too late.

To give you an idea how the MFing MBM is trying to spin this for Petey, he said that taking down OBL was a police action, not a military one.

...seriously...he said that.

If the America govt has done its job, Bin Laden would have had less power than the Queen of England at this point. As such, it would have been better for him to die of natural causes in his bed in a pool of his own fecal matter a few years from now (how many more could he have had) than to give him a martyr's (hero's) death. If the govt had to have him dead, they should have poisoned him subtly, given him some viagra, placed him "in" a goat and left him and the goat somewhere on the outskirts of Islamisbad. 113 I'm happy Obama did this. It helps him politically because it seriously undermines one of the our most damning charges ... that he is an anti-American traitor.

Just to be clear, I still think he's an anti-American traitor. At least as America has existed for the last 200+ years. Obama hates the limited government, individual liberty, white Christian roots of the country. He wants to destroy those roots. He wants to "transform" America into a statist, leftist, communitarian, majority non-white, majority non-Christian country.

Obama is like a dude defending his wife's "honor" -- while still demanding she get plastic surgery, change jobs, change religions, move to another state, and break off all contact with her old friends and family. She's starting to wonder if he really loves her, or what he thinks he can transform her into. ... but then he goes and punches out some lout who insults her at a bar and she swoons -- oh, he really does lover me, he defended my honor.

114 I'm not so excited about the killing of Bin Laden. The Fort Hood Massacre is why.

Bin Laden represents the first phase of the war we are currently in, and a phase that we've won handily. Massive terrorist attacks cannot shake our will and our troops cannot be defeated in even the most gory hand to hand combat. We won.

The next phase is very different and much harder to fight against and win. This is the gradual infiltration of muslims into Infidel lands and the manipulation of our policies as they form Sharia-dominant enclaves and excercise increasing political influence. This is proceeding apace as we have resigned ourselves to the steady chain migration which not one figure of any stature on the Right has addressed.

The Neocon mantra has been: We're killing them over there, so they don't kill us over here.

But they're here. We've been bringing them- importing Jihad. Since 2007, more muslims have immigrated legally to the US than have lived here in the entire history of the Republic.  And as their numbers have increased so has the willingness of our leaders to bend to their will.

Ace, I just posted this in the last thread, but since it sums up my personal take on the matter, I'll just repost here.

I would say questioning the timing of Obama's decision to give the go-ahead isn't conspiracy theorizing; it's distrust.  You can hardly say that Obama's earned our trust.  Everything he does is archly political when he bothers to step out of his self-absorbed fantasy land and realizes that people are unhappy with him.

Conspiracy theorizing would be saying that he specifically tracked down Osama, then deliberately held off until gas prices had almost reached $4/gallon on average around the country.  Then, to distract everyone, he ordered the killshot.  ETA: This way no one would be paying attention to his socialist machinations of the gas industry.

That theory?  Preposterous.

Believing that Obama could see that killing bin Laden would serve the dual purpose of A) killing Osama, and B) boosting Obama's poll numbers?  Not preposterous at all.

Please understand, I don't think that's WHY he did it.  But outright denying that Obama wasn't aware of or at all influenced by a potential "bounce" from OBL's death sounds like naivete in the polar opposite direction from the conspiracy theorists.  I don't quite understand where that polarization is coming from.

I suppose I shall be mocked now.  Ah well.

Of course, it did have the benefit of getting the fake BC out of the headlines.

144 123 ...And if there were no politics involved, why are the dems trying to politicize it? Something's wrong here.

The libs politicize everything because they know they can and get away with it. So politics play a role in this, but it's also a matter of pride. How would it feel to be a Clintonista who let bin Laden go a second time? I'm sure some in the intelligence community would have absolutely trashed these people in their tell-all memoirs. So legacy is definitely part of it.

I don't QTT because I think Obama did it at this exact time for political gain. It will not provide him any political advantage to do so.

IQTT because I am operating under Fair Game rules. I fight by the Leftist Playbook, not the Playbook they demand I play by. I want to destroy Liberalism utterly, totally. I want to hear the wailing of their Women, the plaintive cries of their girly men, the weeping of their Children. I want America to think "What the fuck were we thinking even entertaining these ideas!?". And I will achieve that goal through the most dishonorable, underhanded and dirty means my devious perverted prevert mind can devise.

Posted by: dogfish at May 03, 2011 12:17 PM (N2yhW)

149 Exactly.  If this was a political move, it would have been an "October surprise," not something a year and a half away from the election.

Posted by: Wyatt Earp

This presumes that only one target date matters; the general election itself. it presumes that politicians don't focus on any other dates. If that was the case, then why are Dem Senators announcing their retirements over a year in advance? Why not wait until October 2012? Perhaps it's because other dates DO matter. Time is need to find other candidates, to see who in the opposition might emerge, prepare staffs, campaigns and above all, funding.

But we repeatedly hear people talking as if one and only one milestone, and one electorate exists. The general population in the general election of 2012.

Ask anyone who lost their primary last year if this October surprise bit is the be all and end all of politics.

Shouldn't this be part of a larger post, ace? This is about larger issues like the distrust we have of both political parties. Both political parties have shown themselves to be more committed to establishment, insider narratives and values than any principles. At the same time, they campaign on completely different principles.

If there are too many people indiscriminately lying and looking for conspiracies, it is because our political leaders have given us way too much source material in the last couple decades.

157 This is why I don't give Obama too much credit for this operation. Sure, its good on him, and he didn't like do something stupid, but what president would NOT have attacked Bin Laden, given the chance? (Maybe if India/Pakistan were close to war, then I would let Bin Laden live for a while...) And using bombs or troops? Its sounds daring of Obama, but when you think about it, bombs are not a good option for such a super high value target that's been eluding you for 10 years.

Ace: If you postulate that Obama is risk-averse and weak, then Obama may have refused to act, like Clinton did, out of fear and out of weakness.

But only when he saw his presidency slipping away from him did he agree to take a chance and authorize the raid.

Buzzion: Check the Link on the sidebar about Panetta issuing the kill order.  It makes it sound like Obama really was a hinderance to all of this because of his relying so much on Jarrett.

What Ace suggests is what I thought.  That article about Panetta sounds pretty plausible, but it's too good to check.  Unnamed White House insider source?  Pretty weak.  I think it will all be revealed in Hillary's memoir after she leaves office.

I will be surprised if he doesn't overplay his hand when he visits Ground Zero. He was fairly gracious with congressional leaders and the Cabinet last night, but he can't help himself. That LA Times piece yesterday about how his counterterrorism adviser spent so little time thanking the troops is really telling. So is this quote from the article I linked above:

“In your day jobs, do not let Republicans turn this into continuing the Bush legacy. This has to be about Obama’s decisive leadership,” the guidance said. “He is the one who oversaw bringing bin Laden to justice, much like how Bush failed to do so at Tora Bora and then claimed Osama wasn’t a priority.”

However, I don't really wonder about this to any great degree.  I'm just glad we got the bastard, and yeah, I give Obama credit for having the courage to act this one time.

I don't question the timing, though I wouldn't be surprised if Obama delayed and had to be dragged kicking and screaming to a decision just because of his nature. But I do want to point out that most of the anti-IQTT argumentation so far has the logical flaw of assuming the success of the mission which was not known at the time of the decision. If Obama is a risk averse decision maker and operating under the assumption that he has more to lose from a failed mission than he has to gain from a successful mission, then he could have:

1) decided to delay the mission from before the '10 elections to afterward but long enough before the '12 elections to provide time to recover from any possible mission failure, or

2) jumped the gun and gone now with sketchy intelligence rather than wait until later with better intel but uncomfortably close to the '12 election.

Again, I don't believe any of that. Mainly because there's no evidence for either and by all reports #2 is certainly false. But I just want to say that those arguing that the "fact" that October '12 would have been better timing is proof that that timing was not politically motivated are making an assumption that isn't warranted. The IQTT brigade is wrong because there is no evidence to support their position.

Maybe Ace can get interested in the odd circumstances of the OBL story if it's played to him via the zombie angle.

220 I don't QTT.  According to Pamela Geller (Atlas Shrugs)  Obama was against the raid and killing, also according to the Insider, so Obama can't be accused of it.  He is trying to take advantage of the situation, but even that will backfire on him.  After all, if he is so powerful that he can kill Osama, why are gas prices and food prices so high?

Doesn't mean I'll forget his disrespect towards the military, his military blunders, or his Administration's sympathy toward Islamists, but he or someone else in the Administration made the right call.

When exactly did all of this monkey business with resignations/musical chairs begin concerning  Petraeus/Panetta/Gates from the ISAF-USFOR-A Commander/CIAD/SoD?  Was it the prior week?

And yet, that would make the sidebar story much more plausible - it was Panetta/Petraeus/Gates' last chance to "take the shot" so to speak.

And surely I'm not the ONLY person who questions the stories about Sir Shanksalot being "pulled off of the golf course" after 9 holes and/or remaining calm as a cucumber during the WHCD.  The reason he was playing golf/dissing Trump was because he DIDN'T HAVE A CLUE this was going down on Sunday....

Yeah, it's a conspiracy theory, but the details in the sidebar story are just a little too realistic, if you ask me.....

It is hard to try to make decisions about stories that:

(1) May be spurious or rely on weak/no evidence yet hurt the opposition party

(2) May be spurious or rely on weak/no evidence and hurt the people/party who mentions them

The mainstream consensus is that 'birthers' are 2. I thought Trump's campaigning was 2, while most people here thought it was 1.

It is really hard to know how stories play out at large because they have to be reflected through the MSM and the general ignorance of the American public.

It's like suddenly the whole country has gone into "critical thinking and reading mode"

It's the lack of critical thinking abilities that lead people down the path of nutty conspiracy theories, not the use of such.

Posted by: Hollowpoint at May 03, 2011 04:30 PM (SY2Kh)

I honestly don't think it's either.  Like I said before, I think it all stems from distrust.  We've all been programmed at this point to be suspicious of our politicians because they're all crooks, cheats and scoundrels; "Throw the bums out!"

So when one does something that seems like a good thing done for the sole purpose of being the right thing to do, the motivations for that decision are immediately called into question.   These questions immediately spur the apologists into overdrive, which makes the questions even louder.  "Well if there wasn't anything to be gained from it, why is everyone on HIS side of the aisle saying there wasn't anything to be gained?  Filthy liars, trying to seem all saintly and beyond reproach.  He's just another smug, greedy, pompous politician.  Toss him out on his ass!"  Most of the questions are legitimate, with equally legitimate answers.  Some of the questions are ridiculous and spin off into wild fantasy and conspiracy theories, and those adherents can't be reckoned with.  You just have to let them go.

One of the basic rights that we practice in the US is the right to question our elected officials.  Thanks to a lot of broken promises and false assurances over the years, those questions have become sharper and more common.  The advent of the internet and other instant media means that people have immediate access to information as it becomes available, and sometimes that information is contradictory.  That leads to even MORE questions and even MORE confusion and distrust.  It's an unfortunate side effect of the digital age.  People are more informed, but it also means more people are informed, and not necessarily informed with the right information.

Talk about confusing.

Give us honest politicians for a hundred years and maybe this "conspiracy" culture (if that's what we must call it) will die down.  Otherwise, it'll be the norm for a long, long time.

The other uncharacteristic thing about this - besides actually making a decision - is fulfilling a campaign promise. It's all very puzzling.

On a related note, sometimes I get the idea that HC has to just about club him over the head to get him to do something. Go figure that she'd be the one making that 3am phone call, metaphorically speaking, and her challenge would be to get an answer. But that could all be based on hearsay, of course.

239

Increased complexity is also part of the conspiratorial thinking.

We have so many methods for instantly finding out what our elected officials are doing, but we don't have the equivalent knowledge to figure out what is really happening.

Example: The spending battle. How long did it take us to come to any consensus on how much spending was cut? Would we even agree on a number if asked? Were there multiple correct answers? Who will even remember the final number given after there are more numbers and projections in the next spending battle?

We (in general) don't have the political sopshistication and knowledge to keep up with the pace of political news. We now have access to so much information, but we have weaker critical thinking skills and resources for deciphering what is actually happening.

This gap allows a lot of room for challenging and ridiculing political leaders who actively use this gap for their own interests.

Look, I know Zero is a liar and opportunist, but I doubt that even he would allow himself to be punked on this kind of level. I had assumed that OBL was dead for years and we either couldn;t confirm it or wouldn't for some reason.

Ok, so Zero gets one in his "win" column. It looks lonely next to all of those losses. If all he's got in 2012 is that "I got Bin Laden, you ingrate racists!" while gas is $5 a gallon, he ain't winning. I don't question the timinig because it's way too far from the election.

I don't question the timing because I don't give a shit as long as the goatfucker is dead.   But, I'll therorize on how I think it went down.

We know (maybe, it's been reported anyway) that the SEAL team practiced for a month at Bagram airbase.  It's been reported that they were pretty damn sure in February that the goatfucker was there, so that means that between February and May 1, there were at least 2 months before the order was given for a go.   So, one month for practice on the mission.   What the fuck was going on for the rest of the time?   Did it take that long to erect a mock-up for practice?   Doubt that, because the military can build damn near a whole city in much less time.

I think that it took that long for deWon to make up his mind, or be pushed into a decision.   Now, they say that he met with his National Security team 5 times during this time.   We all know he alots, what, maybe 45 minutes for any damn meeting he ever attends?   I think he was just being updated on what they had learned, how plans were going, and that they thought the goatfucker was still there.

Now, his so-called decision to go ahead may have actually been made because those (Pennetta and others) on his team basically said, if you don't go ahead and do this, you are fucked if it comes out that you dithered or decided not to go ahead.  That may very well be why it is being reported that Panetta made the final decision.   DeWon may have not had the guts and just in case something went wrong he could blame it on others.   Since, it went brilliantly, he can take credit.

That, to me, seems a more likely scenario.   That's why the jug-eared fuck had to be called off the golf course.   Pretty hard to take credit when the shit went down if you're on a golf course yelling, "Fore!".   Besides, what fucking president, supposedly in total charge/control of this kind of mission says, "Well, I'm going to play golf while we're in the middle of the biggest fucking kill in a decade (that I'm in total control of), so call me when they're about to take off in the choppers?"

Bull fucking shit he was in total control and command.   Doesn't. make. sense.

A hundred years is too long. Halley's Comet returns in fifty years. That's when the reanimating fluid injected into bin Laden's corpse takes effect. The Cult of the Comet plans to dominate the land and the sea in 2061. Osama will certainly be Poseidon arisen; thus the burial at sea.

As for dominion over the land, events are already unfolding. Obama is part of the plot. So is Clinton, Reagan, both Presidents Bush. They all answer to the same master, the leader of the Comet Cult, former NFL player and coach Ted Marchibroda. But no SEAL team will ever get to him. There are too many people protecting him, including our military. The network is huge. For all we know, Ace is a member, which is why he questions the questions of timing.

Obama shouldn't get credit simply because of him being in Office when the National Security establishment found him using programs and rules laid out during the previous Administration.

This is like giving credit for the Manhattan Project to Harry S. Truman.

Your comment shed new light for me on something odd I had noticed in his speech. He went out of his way to declare that he had made the assessment that the intelligence was adequate. Now, it's not his job to make intelligence assessments, and he's not qualified to do so. So your comment makes me think that the members of his team had concluded that the time was right several times previously, but he gave the excuse for not acting that the intel was as of yet inadequate - declaring himself to be a de facto intelligence analyst (which exposes the trait of being a really horrific leader).

261 I don't question the timing.
As Ace points out, there is a reason that the definition of "Waffle" in the dictionary has a picture of Obama next to it.

For some reason, Obama made the right choice.

I suspect that Wiki leaks mentioning a couriers name last week might have something to do with it.
A paranoid person is always looking for a hint that someone who wants to do him harm, is getting close to him.
And Bin-Ladin was nothing except paranoid.
Look at the steps he took concerning his own security.
It's not hard to imagine him deciding that there was just enough of a whiff that the US was getting close to identifying his lair, that it would be time to move to another location.
Could Bin Laden know for sure that we were getting close?
It doesn't matter, he would rabbit in a heartbeat just on a slim chance that we were getting close.

I also suspect that if he had refused to act, after being presented the information, that it could have been used against him politically at a later date.
Hillary would certainly use that little tidbit later, if she decided to make a bid in 2012.  The fact that he was presented this knowledge, an failed to act on it would not have come from Hillary directly.
But it certainly would have started to perculate out from un-named sources about 3 months before the election in 2012.

Obama made the right call....good on him.
It's what we expect our presidents to do
But in Obama's case, you almost feel the need to pat him on the head, give him a slurpee, and tell him how special he is.

Why would you wait until February to start preparing a SEAL team to go in, if you were even fairly sure that the goatfucker was somewhere?   Wouldn't you want them prepared at as close to ready as possible just in case you got word that the goatfucker was preparing to bugout?   I'm not up (obviously) on how that comes about, but I think I would want them at least on a kind of ready alert just in case they needed to move damn quickly.

267 I believe this conditionally: Obama had little to do with this operation; he is not responsible for the intelligence break that led to Osama nor the timing of the raid. His only role was this: permission. As POTUS, Obama had to give permission for the raid.

It is highly doubtful that Navy SEALs and their coordinators picked ANY date with political significance in mind. The only factors that are taken into consideration are those that would directly affect the mission. Thus, it is ridiculous to read too much into 1) the date;  2) the time; 3) the brand of watches they wore.

Frankly, I do not believe most Americans will give Obama much credit for this. Those who do have already thrown their panties at The One and have nothing else to shed. If Obama crows a little too much about this mission -- and he is likely to do so since he has so little else to crow about -- it could and probably will backfire on him. Voters get crazy once in a while (like when they vote in a clown like this) but they are not, by and large stupid.

Any boost Obama gets from this will not be nearly as much as he hopes, won't last long even if so (and he should feel a cold chill grip his heart when he finally notices that), and it won't help him much on election day, 2012 -- a year and a half away.

Further, I don't know many Americans -- none, quite frankly -- who care that much about May Day.

273 If those Hillbuzz people get a hold of that story, they'll be screaming for Hillary to primary Barry.

Panetta smacked the Ditherer-in-chief because Wikileaks 3:The Gitmoing is in the theatres now, and the part about the courier is in it. OBL would know pretty soon that the bloodhounds are close and bolt to a new place (gee, after he decorated so nicely).

Ace is right, its too soon for any political advantage. Any bounce he gets will be erased at the gas pump, and after this week, any politicizing of it off-putting even more than his thursday victory dance at Ground Zero (which he failed to visit the last 3 times he's been to NY last month)

276 I question the timing of questioning the timing...

Ah, 'hell with it.

At any rate, the date is most likely because O put it off as long as he could because, as davidt's already said, he "dithered until he couldn't dither any longer. It's what he does."  He might have wanted to sit on it until a much more opportune time, like, say, right before the next election.  As it stands, the public will largely forget about how he finally did something right for once by the time he's up for re-election.

But I think what was much more likely is that he simply sat on this until he couldn't sit on it any longer.  Simplest answer and fits his MO.

277 Bin Laden was under house arrest in that compound. That is no million dollar mansion. It has 3,000 sq. ft. of living space and the interior furnishings were anything but luxurious. You saw the pictures. This "living in luxury" BS is to distract you from seeing that compound for what it was. A jail. This is also why bin Laden was not armed. Prisoners usually are not. Also, this "treasure trove of intelligence" from OBL's computers is another lie to cover up the fact that OBL was a prisoner in that compound. Why announce to every major AQ figure that you now possibly have intel on them and give them a chance to flee/move? I honestly feel wekilled a defenseless prisoner under house arrest. The question is why?

278 There's no question of timing.  Pope John Paul II became Blessed John Paul II at noon, and just a few hours later bin Laden is dead.  It'd be interesting to find out exactly what time the mission started...

280 I used to question the timing.  Then I replaced my points with electronic ignition, so it's all good now.

281 Any timing to kill that sunovabitch is okay by me. Obama, I really hate the job you've done as president and I want you out and your goon party the hell out of office in 2012, but good on ya for scragging Osama Bin laden. Same for those Somali pirates Nobody can ever take that away from you. That's what life is like when you don't vote present, you serve your country's interests, and you don't ignore reality to appease your clueless delusional political allies and indulge their pet political/economic theories that never work. Welcome to what you've been loudly denouncing as the dark side. It works. It helps the people of the USA. It gives you the beginnings of credibility after three years of shitting your pants on every foreign policy opportunity you could trip over. Don't forget that. This is real in a way that hope and change and dumb industry nationalizations and handing companies over to unions will NEVER be.

282 Has anyone noticed that Obama's really big scores occur whenever he continues an existing Bush policy?

283 Looks like we've forgotten the debate on raising the debt ceiling for the federal government, and just how is that new budget progressing through congress? Anyone remember?

this argument proves that the Reps are truly about defense and the security of our country and not just about "our team"

I'm a lib, but I went independent Sunday night. I knew this would be seen as more political point scoring than true concern for the country and I could not take it anymore. for four years (i started reading politcal blogs after the 2004 elections) I heard nothing but hatred for W...not one shred of credit, even when he created Medicare part D (were it a lib pres, he would have been seen as the next JFK or FDR)

Also, did you check the Gallup poll recently? The CIA got the most credit, and while Obama was credited with the most, but W got some credit as well

I know this thread is deader than Bin Laden but here goes:

There is nothing to question about the timing of the raid.  Only days before Obama wasted a perfectly good birth certificate to shut up Trump and rescue his approval numbers.  If he knew this was coming up he would certainly have hung onto the birth certificate to use it later.

286 Deen't read the thread (oh no!). But I think it's the totality of the media storm that Obama has (quite) successfully whupped up, that maybe you be missing?

1) (Successful) 'release' of didge compiled C.O.L.B. (without ever actually producing it, in the atomic!).

2) Yukkity Yuk Yuk Tour's (Bambi got nothing on Charlie Sheen) first stop ... Oprah! ["I am an American" (voiced: Brando/Waterfront)].

3) Monday, Medal of Honor ceremony.

4) Tuesday, host/MC athletic event .... with amputees/wounded vets.

5) Agonize over the lost dear departed's makeup (I'm ready for my closeup now Mr. DeMille)

6) Venture to NYC, and stand atop hollowed ground, yammering/singing like Natalie Wood (why yes I duzz Feel Preety).

There is no random there. None. Yes, the panty waist narrative works, and well. Indeed. And is entirely valid, to be sure. Just doesn't work for me. At all. He is what he is. A traitor. It's all he is .. it is all he knows. And I believe time will reveal ....
