On the Supposed Weakness of the GOP Field
— Slublog

If you've been watching the news lately, you may have noticed a narrative building. It looks a little something like this, and this. I understand the impulse behind such opinions - historically, incumbent presidents are very difficult to defeat, and none of the announced GOP candidates has thus far had a "wow" factor. Fair enough.

There is a major difference between boring and weak. Charles Krauthammer suggests in today's column that a lack of baggage and flash may be just what we need. He then lists the major candidates and in looking over them, there emerges a trend: political experience. Business success. Briefly:

Newt Gingrich, former Speaker of the House
Tim Pawlenty, former Governor
Mitt Romney, former Governor
Rick Santorum, former Senator
Herman Cain, successful businessman
Michelle Bachmann, former state senator and member of Congress
Haley Barbour, former current Governor
Gary Johnson, former Governor

There's a considerable amount of political and business experience there. Again, not exciting, but weak? It's an assertion without evidence that's only being made to further the "no one can beat The One" narrative. In other words, utter nonsense. If I were consulting one of the candidates, I'd take this head-on in a stump speech. Something along the lines of this:

Pundits in the media and the political class in Washington are pointing to my GOP opponents and I and they're calling us a weak field of candidates...they claim that none of us have what it takes to defeat President Obama. They are trying to make this election about us, but we can't allow them to do that. This election is about a simple set of questions, ones that have been asked before: are you better off now than you were four years ago? Have you had to tighten your budget? How much does it take to fill your car with gas?

These are simple questions, and I suspect for most Americans the answers are no, yes and way more than I can afford.

This election is not about who is the flashiest candidate, or who can attract the biggest crowds or make the prettiest speeches. Are my opponents and I the most exciting people to grace the political stage? Depends on who you ask. But are we weak? No.

You know what's weak? The dollar. The housing market. The job market. Wages. Our foreign policy.

Those are weak, and the policies of the current administration is what has weakened them.

If the administration wants to have a conversation about weakness, I'm all for it because the things that are weak right now matter more to the American people than what the media and pundits are focused on. What do you think Americans care more about? A candidate who 'wows' crowds with his words, or a candidate who wants to move past words and take action that will improve the economy? As we've seen, pretty words and charisma don't create jobs, they don't make the world instantly love us and they don't lower gas prices.

And some more along those lines. This election needs to focus on one thing: Obama's record. That's it.

Don't let the media set the narrative. We don't have a weak field. We have a weak president.

Ed. Note: changed two paragraphs, included the word "Business."

1 The problem is that, at least in the case of Romney and probably in the case of Daniels, they are not in it to defeat Obama. They are in it to defeat conservative candidates and then throw the general election.

6 If the election is about Obama, we have a very good chance of wining. If not, I don't like the odds.

The good news is elections are almost always a referendum on the incumbent. That doesn't mean you can nominate anyone but just someone plausible and reasonably non-threatening.

I wasn't thinking *exactly* that, but maybe you're right.  I don't know that much about El Baradei personally;  It could be that Baradei has a kinder public face, but is as ruthless as an Assad or Ahmedinejad in private.

He's bad news either way, and his willful blindness towards Iranian nuclear ambitions have already caused incalculable harm.

Are we expected once more, to do what I call the Peter Plus Principle??? Where we not only promote them to their level of incompetence, but then vote for them to run OUR LIVES????

Sarah got a lot of support last election simply because she WAS an outsider... heck, even Obama ran as an Outsider (he was part of the Chicago machine, not the Washington machine)...

People are looking at Trump for the same reason.... as silly and flawed and RINOish as he is, he IS NOT a Washington or Political Insider...

107 He's just a war record and an asshole daughter away from being the second coming of John McCain. Posted by: DrewM. at April 22, 2011 03:12 PM (plesI) I could kind of understand why John McCain is so despised by the base given McCain-Feingold, his first marriage, amnesty and the Gang of Fourteen. But he looked better than all the other losers running with him in 2008. Too bad he was still a weak candidate in the general. The surge helped him win the primary. But it's hard to see how Jon Huntsman is guilty by association for having co-chaired John McCain's campaign. Actually, he is already assembling a strong campaign team, which makes it look like he's planning a competitive run for the nomination and knows how to get it. That's usually how the GOP usually nominates "the next in line." Except, to the public, Huntsman is a fresh face who has been identified by the Obama campaign as a tough rival.

As a resident Rino/ Monty disciple ( Doomer), I'm actually much more optimistic than most here it seems as far as 2012 goes.  I think TPaw, or even Mittens can knock off OWaffle relatively comfortably.

That said, I'd love someone with more sizzle/ reliably conservative.  I'm not worried about boring though.  I'm concerned with the ability to first campaign, and then govern with the economic crisis we face in mind.  The balls factor, if you will.

I still think a wild card who we really aren't focused on will be our nominee.  The tea party spirit will be captured, just a matter of who decides to grab it.

It will appeal to independents who see nothing wrong in answering the call to serve your country when the CINC asks it of you, who think Republicans are racist, and who expect you to be polite to your boss. I think Huntsman's team leaked those before he returns to the US, and it's about as incriminating as SNL's Fred Armisen's unfunny jokes about Obama being too cool for real parody. He has an excuse to run a gazillion dollars of ads with no one asking why and makes him look more "moderate" when compared to the nut case running against him in the primary (again, Dennis, I am looking at you).

A few months ago, I would've bet money that Hillary was gonna primary him. Either the DNC has paid her off and/or it's become apparent to her that she ruined her chances by accepting the SOS job. If she had stayed outside of the administration, she could've pointed her boney finger at Obie and screeched about what a fuck up he is. Now, however, she's just part of the problem.

Obama was introduced by DreamWorks Animation SKG’s chief executive Jeffrey Katzenberg, who noted that about three years ago, most “everyone in this room embarked on a great journey and adventure with you,” he said, directing his remarks to the president. “I think we all would agree that nobody has ever inherited a set of challenges — and nobody I think could possibly be better in tackling them. So we all feel very lucky to have you as our president for four more years,” Katzenberg added to much applause.

All of these useless idiots can FOAD.  Unbelievable.  Toonces also remarked about how the economy is recovering......huh?

163 Speaking of John Weaver, Huntsman's campaign manager, he is the guy who urged McCain to make attacks on the NRA the centerpiece of his campaign. This was in 2000, at the height of the gun control craze, mere months before the Smith and Wesson boycott (for their cutting an anti-gun deal with the Clinton regime) that sent the gun control cause into a permanent downward spiral. The "forward-looking" anti-gun theme that was supported by about 50% in 2000 is now supported by 25%, and still dropping. What does that say about Weaver's political wisdom, not to mention his support for Constitutional rights? Bush won by a hair in 2000 only because of the pro-2A vote. Had McCain been the nominee, Weaver's advice would have caused Gore to be President on 9/11/2001. What does it say about Huntsman that he would hire a man like Weaver?

You know.... if Trump REALLY wants to help this country... he SHOULD get in the Primaries as a Presidential Candidate, AS a DEMOCRAT!

Blue Dogs would come out in droves for him... and how could Obama NOT go to a Primary Debate?

I lived in Austin long enough to have lived through a number of cycles like this.

Yeah, I know. They're a little jumpy about the fires out around Oak Hill, though.

I rmember some summers where downtown was literally black with crickets.

Racist!

I'll be there on Monday. The best place to look is the Pedernales water level at Hwy 71 and Paleface Ranch.

Yep. Haven't been out that way in awhile though.

168 I don't know, I'm inclined to think that the "wow" factor of A.B.O.** will reveal itself when the economy slips into the second half of the double-dip recession we're in, and stays there.

In fact, if the GOP can find a single testicle among the lot of them, what we'll be hearing (finally) is that the recession never actually "ended", but was simply masked by artificially inflating GDP with hundreds of billion$ of borrowed Taxpayers' dollars pumped into the economy as welfare handouts and public sector payoffs... while the unemployment rate skyrocketed WELL BEYOND the promises of the Office of the President-Elect, and stayed there.

The "wow" factor will reveal itself when Americans begin to understand how the Spendulu$ was designed to keep million$ flowing into Democrat campaign coffers and create the illusion of a "recovery", not to actually heal the damage wrought by socially suicidal leftist policies. All of this will be laid - rightly - at the feet of Congressional Democrats, who began tanking a healthy economy in 2007, and BHO, whose lack of experience and un-American, anti-free-market, dictatorial, collectivist policies made things much, much worse. They won't have Bush to kick around in 2012.

But that testicle thing... that's a BIG 'if'.

Hey, you know who has experience and the flash and the crowds and the speeches and the conviction? Yeah, the one you say has no chance at all compared to every other name you could find.

Jeeze, Krauthammer. You really don't like the veteran who gets uppity now do you? I'm guessing you'd vote even for Obama instead of that woman so as not to hurt your political pride.

Telegenic, articulate, educated at Wharton, where he is active as an alumni and could make PA competitive. Better fund-raising ability than Mitt Romney and could go head to head with the Obama campaign. Also more secular than Mitt Romney, while actively charitable. That should appeal to evangelicals. 177 Don't forget the anti-Palin fanatics. The ones who see absolutely no good, but all bad in Palin. And let's not forget the "electability" brigade on the Right. Those who are fanatical about calling themselves "realists" and everyone else "cultists" and "purists" if they don't agree to support the latest "electable" RINO of choice. Amen, brother. I might add that usually, most of us "purists" would be happy with a candidate that was really mainstream. The problem doesn't come, for the most part, when they throw out standard-issue humdrum Republicans like, for instance, Norm Coleman, who are nowhere near far enough right but still identifiably more Republican than Democrat. The problem comes when they throw out candidates so far left that we can only conclude that the GOP establishment is pushing them primarily as a deliberate insult. Example: Mike Castle, the only GOP Congressman to co-sponsor the permanent "Feinstein-plus" AWB in the last Congress, who was regularly getting less than 30% conservative records in Congress. Had the GOP put in an "arch-conservative" like Lindsey Graham or John McCain in Delaware, the conservative base would not have voted for Christine O'Donnell. Note that we don't consider the same kind of candidate acceptable in South Carolina.

And I question the judgement of those 80% too.

Congratulating and wishing the new President well for the sake of the country is not the same as calling him 'an exceptional leader'. He is not, nor has he ever been that. Anyone who thinks he is or was is unfit to be the GOP nominee.

During the Fox post-game analysis, Krauthammer said, "Obama delivered his usual brilliant performance." WHAT? Were we even watching the same debate? It's almost like the entire power structure of the US had decided in advance that Obama would be the next president. 193 198: I don't think Krauthammer is a mole. I think he's a hawkish left-of-center pundit with an Ivory Tower view of the world that might have been fairly accurate in, say, 1984, but is no longer so. He generally supports Republicans nowadays, not because of some plot to subvert the party, but because the Democrats are so far towards Communism that he can't stomach them any more. Nevertheless, his left-of-center opinions on most issues are the same they have always been. I heard a saying once: a church should be happy when the town hooker starts attending services, but that doesn't qualify her to start preaching sermons.

Trump, the Dem in RINO Clothing, is the joker in the pack, a wild card play that can only hurt the GOP in the long run. Sure, some straight talk is good about our dealings with international trading partners, but the birther thing smells to me like a honey pot trap set by the Dems, who right now seem to be politically outmanuvering some slow to get it Republican leaders.  H/T to Bonnie Tyler

And he's gotta be larger than life

228 I always wondered whether I would have supported Reagan, if I had been old enough to vote for him. Now I know I would have, because he was more flexible than many so-called conservatives these days. If you aren't sure about supporting the greatest President of the 20th century, who was also a staunch conservative, then frankly there's no reaching you. BTW, he was "flexible" only when it was necessary to get legislation passed. He didn't run off on left-wing fads during elections. I was proud to have attended Clinton's first inauguration, a president who was a far sight better than this one. Yeah, the Incinerator of Waco was a great guy all around. I'm probably just biased, being one of the gun owners on his secret illegal registration list and all.

229 Of those eight, the only one I'd be willing to cast a vote for is Bachmann.

Gingrich and Romney are non-starters. The rest, I'll wait on.

230 Too bad she couldn't cheat her way to beating the bearded marxist. Too bad the GOP couldn't find someone to the right of Obama on gun rights to oppose her.

Posted by: Ken at April 22, 2011 01:11 PM (ZBbts)

231 DeMint (who, surprisingly, seems to be heading toward endorsing Romney) What's the surprise there? DeMint is full of shit but fancies himself one day being president like all other senators. He's sucking up to Romney, because he wants to be his veep, delivering ultimate conservative credentials. That's why he was opposed to Haley; she actually trumps him there, because she's a woman who is close to Sarah Palin. Romney would pick Haley as his veep in a heartbeat, but DeMint is still holding out hope.

232 Too bad the GOP couldn't find someone to the right of Obama on gun rights to oppose her. Posted by: Ken at April 22, 2011 05:11 PM (ZBbts) It's DE. Nobody wanted anyone to the right of Obama.

Posted by: Tattoo De Plane at April 22, 2011 01:13 PM (mHQ7T)

233 Apparently the GOP primary voters did. But they were cheating so it doesn't count.

Posted by: Ken at April 22, 2011 01:14 PM (ZBbts)

234 who was also a staunch conservative You know who Reagan's favorite president was? F to the motherfucking D. R. Look it up.

235 Apparently the GOP primary voters did. Apparently, they lost. Congratulations, Senator Coons.

@17: "GOP motto in 2012: Because our guy sucks just a bit less than your guy."

Nah, needs to be more dramatic: "Guess what guys, it's time to embrace the horror! Look, we've got front row tickets to the end of the earth United States of America!"

237 You're right. Reagan was a leftist. That's why he brought taxes from 70% to 28% and built up the military enough to bankrupt the USSR. He showed his "flexibillity" when he told Gorbachev to FOAD over missile defense.

238 I have to go catch a benefit screening of Kineto Shindo's 'The Naked Island' for Japanese tsunami relief introduced by Benicio Del Toro. I'm sure you'll be broken up without me. Good luck to Tim Pawlenty or whichever loser you support.

Posted by: Tattoo De Plane at April 22, 2011 01:19 PM (mHQ7T)

239 Apparently, they lost. Congratulations, Senator Coons. Dude, you're the one saying we had to nominate Castle because he knew the lay of the land. "Apparently," he didn't. So basically you're telling me that it was smart to nominate a leftist who was taken by the GOP both in Delaware and nationwide as an insult, because he knew the lay of the land almost well enough to beat a former witch. Gotcha.

240 You know who Reagan's favorite president was? F to the motherfucking D. R. Look it up. Reagan voted for FDR, but his favorite President was most likely the one whose picture he hung in the Oval Office: Calvin Coolidge.

241 I'm guessing that Tattoo de Plane's political experience consists of (a) schmoozing big money donors on Meet the Donors Day for College Republicans; and (b) trying to convince Democrat sluts that he's a "libertarian," not a conservative. (Funny how "libertarians" in college always seem to be cool with anti-libertarian causes like gun control. You'd almost think it was just a tactic to get laid by giving the shaft to the party base).

244 Speaking of  Chuckie Krauthammer being an asshole on wheels, will someone please wheel him OUT OF THE ROOM.

245 I'm tired of hearing that the feild is weak. Personally, I don't think the feild has been completed yet. Half the guys on that list would mop the floor with Obama in a debate. Which leads to a prognostication.....I would bet that Obama will do just about anything to ensure there are no debates. If there are...there will only be one. (With a White House approved moderator of course).

246 Here are some of the "interesting" comments i just read when scanning through them. "Demint is full of shit" --oh yeah, since when? "Romney would pick Haley as his Veep in a heartbeat" --another fairly attractive recently elected female gov as veep? "Krauthammer is left of center" --thats another new one to me. "Romney and Newt are nonstarters" --i consider these two to be the two of the smartest politicians around whether you like them or not. First post here, players.

248 Krauthammer isn't left of center on the Beltway circuit, but he is compared to the population as a whole. He's a conservative in the sense of being a hawk and in the sense that he's OK with Bush's level of overspending but not Obama's, since, unlike the current Dems, he isn't stark raving mad or trying to destroy America. However, he has supported left-wing positions in the past, such as gun confiscation. He also once worked for Walter Mondale.

249 Kin we get Susan Collins to deliver that speech Ace just wrote?

Posted by: I'mWithStupid at April 22, 2011 03:12 PM (xhNbo)

250 And yea, we get it, you don't like gun control. Along with most of the GOP and independents, and a sizeable chunk of moderate Democrats. If you're wrong on this issue and you're a Republican, you lose. Now, granted, Krauthammer isn't running, and, as I stated before, I think he's honest about the things he says. However, he isn't just pro-gun control; he's pro-gun confiscation. That is an extreme position, and the fact that he doesn't think so causes me to question his value as an observer of the political scene. I don't hate Krauthammer. I just don't think his advice is worth anything.

Posted by: Ken at April 22, 2011 03:25 PM (ZBbts)

251 Actually, a better question might be "Are you better off now than when the Republicans took over in 2000?"

In my case not so much.

253 "Demint is full of shit" --oh yeah, since when? Jim DeMint and Lindsay Graham have been playing good cop bad cop for a long time, and nobody seems to catch on. "Why does a RINO like Lindsay Graham keep getting reelected in such a red state as South Carolina? Why not somebody more like Jim DeMint?" Because all you "conservatives" love your spending cuts until they're coming for a piece of your pie. Why do you think Ron Paul keeps getting elected in Texas? Paul Ryan does the same thing. Even Jim Demint is full of shit on earmarks. I guarantee you Lindsay Graham will get reelected, because he took a bullet on that Port of Charleston earmark. Jim DeMint grandstanded and railed that earmarks are evil... for you guys, who aren't paying attention but just like having smoke blown up your asses. But then he goes back home and reassures the people in his district that's not what he really meant, he just wants the best deal for them and knows how bad their economy needs this. Graham then uses DeMint to show Washington that they mean it, they will "tie the Senate in knots" over this unless Harry Reid negotiates with them. This is the real meaning of "necessary spending cuts," as you have all seen. So, the pork gets doled out to James Clyburn, who gets the most, then Lindsay Graham gets $50,000 and then DeMint gets his cut. He has quietly back the earmarks all along. This is how the King of the Tea Party can rationalize endorsing Mitt "I wrote Romneycare with Ted Kennedy" Romney for president. When the public was outraged, Jim DeMint said, "No, no, no. I supported him last time. Not sure about this time." But now he says Romney might talk himself out of this, using the old "states are the test kitchens for the nation" argument. But it really means Mitt just needs to name his price, because we've already established what he is. IMO, Lindsay Graham is the tougher of the two, because at least he doesn't try to sugarcoat things. Any guy with a PAC like DeMint's is plain ambitious. Period.

254 "Romney would pick Haley as his Veep in a heartbeat" --another fairly attractive recently elected female gov as veep? She actually has won more elections than Romney, who has won one in his whole life. Some frontrunner.
