On the Supposed Weakness of the GOP Field
— Slublog

If you've been watching the news lately, you may have noticed a narrative building. It looks a little something like this, and this. I understand the impulse behind such opinions - historically, incumbent presidents are very difficult to defeat, and none of the announced GOP candidates has thus far had a "wow" factor. Fair enough.

There is a major difference between boring and weak. Charles Krauthammer suggests in today's column that a lack of baggage and flash may be just what we need. He then lists the major candidates and in looking over them, there emerges a trend: political experience. Business success. Briefly:

Newt Gingrich, former Speaker of the House
Tim Pawlenty, former Governor
Mitt Romney, former Governor
Rick Santorum, former Senator
Herman Cain, successful businessman
Michelle Bachmann, former state senator and member of Congress
Haley Barbour, former current Governor
Gary Johnson, former Governor

There's a considerable amount of political and business experience there. Again, not exciting, but weak? It's an assertion without evidence that's only being made to further the "no one can beat The One" narrative. In other words, utter nonsense. If I were consulting one of the candidates, I'd take this head-on in a stump speech. Something along the lines of this:

Pundits in the media and the political class in Washington are pointing to my GOP opponents and I and they're calling us a weak field of candidates...they claim that none of us have what it takes to defeat President Obama. They are trying to make this election about us, but we can't allow them to do that. This election is about a simple set of questions, ones that have been asked before: are you better off now than you were four years ago? Have you had to tighten your budget? How much does it take to fill your car with gas?

These are simple questions, and I suspect for most Americans the answers are no, yes and way more than I can afford.

This election is not about who is the flashiest candidate, or who can attract the biggest crowds or make the prettiest speeches. Are my opponents and I the most exciting people to grace the political stage? Depends on who you ask. But are we weak? No.

You know what's weak? The dollar. The housing market. The job market. Wages. Our foreign policy.

Those are weak, and the policies of the current administration is what has weakened them.

If the administration wants to have a conversation about weakness, I'm all for it because the things that are weak right now matter more to the American people than what the media and pundits are focused on. What do you think Americans care more about? A candidate who 'wows' crowds with his words, or a candidate who wants to move past words and take action that will improve the economy? As we've seen, pretty words and charisma don't create jobs, they don't make the world instantly love us and they don't lower gas prices.

And some more along those lines. This election needs to focus on one thing: Obama's record. That's it.

Don't let the media set the narrative. We don't have a weak field. We have a weak president.

1 The problem is that, at least in the case of Romney and probably in the case of Daniels, they are not in it to defeat Obama. They are in it to defeat conservative candidates and then throw the general election.

The good news is elections are almost always a referendum on the incumbent. That doesn't mean you can nominate anyone but just someone plausible and reasonably non-threatening.

Barbour is not really a RINO but there have been some rumors on stuff. Not sure on Santorum, haven't done any research and don't know much about him. But cleary Krautass was pushing Romney.

I wasn't thinking *exactly* that, but maybe you're right.  I don't know that much about El Baradei personally;  It could be that Baradei has a kinder public face, but is as ruthless as an Assad or Ahmedinejad in private. 

He's bad news either way, and his willful blindness towards Iranian nuclear ambitions have already caused incalculable harm.

I know he worked for OWaffle.  Dead on arrival for me.

As a resident Rino/ Monty disciple ( Doomer), I'm actually much more optimistic than most here it seems as far as 2012 goes.  I think TPaw, or even Mittens can knock off OWaffle relatively comfortably. 

That said, I'd love someone with more sizzle/ reliably conservative.  I'm not worried about boring though.  I'm concerned with the ability to first campaign, and then govern with the economic crisis we face in mind.  The balls factor, if you will.

I still think a wild card who we really aren't focused on will be our nominee.  The tea party spirit will be captured, just a matter of who decides to grab it.

Huntsman served his country in a prominent ambasadorship. He has great credentials and did a great job for one of the most conservative states in the country. Huntsman got a B from the Cato Institute, because they liked his tax policy (cutting) but disapproved of his increasing spending by 10%. However, he did wonders for tourism in Utah.

The "wow" factor will reveal itself when Americans begin to understand how the Spendulu$ was designed to keep million$ flowing into Democrat campaign coffers and create the illusion of a "recovery", not to actually heal the damage wrought by socially suicidal leftist policies. All of this will be laid - rightly - at the feet of Congressional Democrats, who began tanking a healthy economy in 2007, and BHO, whose lack of experience and un-American, anti-free-market, dictatorial, collectivist policies made things much, much worse. They won't have Bush to kick around in 2012.

But that testicle thing... that's a BIG 'if'.

It did look pretty weird to me. There was a thud noise that you couldn't see what had happened right before that. However, I have seen real seizures and they always look like a put-up job. She also lkooked like she was purposely hitting the wall with her hand. Very odd...

And what was with all the kicking in bare feet? I don't know... a lot less blood than one would expect. Getting kicked in the face like that normally would create a nose torrent.

Had the GOP put in an "arch-conservative" like Lindsey Graham or John McCain in Delaware, the conservative base would not have voted for Christine O'Donnell. He's sucking up to Romney, because he wants to be his veep, delivering ultimate conservative credentials. That's why he was opposed to Haley; she actually trumps him there, because she's a woman who is close to Sarah Palin. Romney would pick Haley as his veep in a heartbeat, but DeMint is still holding out hope.

Which leads to a prognostication.....I would bet that Obama will do just about anything to ensure there are no debates. If there are...there will only be one. 248 Krauthammer isn't left of center on the Beltway circuit, but he is compared to the population as a whole. He's a conservative in the sense of being a hawk and in the sense that he's OK with Bush's level of overspending but not Obama's, since, unlike the current Dems, he isn't stark raving mad or trying to destroy America. However, he has supported left-wing positions in the past, such as gun confiscation. He also once worked for Walter Mondale.

If you're wrong on this issue and you're a Republican, you lose. Now, granted, Krauthammer isn't running, and, as I stated before, I think he's honest about the things he says. However, he isn't just pro-gun control; he's pro-gun confiscation. That is an extreme position, and the fact that he doesn't think so causes me to question his value as an observer of the political scene. I don't hate Krauthammer. I just don't think his advice is worth anything.

Because all you "conservatives" love your spending cuts until they're coming for a piece of your pie. Why do you think Ron Paul keeps getting elected in Texas? Paul Ryan does the same thing. Even Jim Demint is full of shit on earmarks. I guarantee you Lindsay Graham will get reelected, because he took a bullet on that Port of Charleston earmark. Jim DeMint grandstanded and railed that earmarks are evil... for you guys, who aren't paying attention but just like having smoke blown up your asses. But then he goes back home and reassures the people in his district that's not what he really meant, he just wants the best deal for them and knows how bad their economy needs this. Graham then uses DeMint to show Washington that they mean it, they will "tie the Senate in knots" over this unless Harry Reid negotiates with them. This is the real meaning of "necessary spending cuts," as you have all seen. So, the pork gets doled out to James Clyburn, who gets the most, then Lindsay Graham gets $50,000 and then DeMint gets his cut. He has quietly back the earmarks all along. This is how the King of the Tea Party can rationalize endorsing Mitt "I wrote Romneycare with Ted Kennedy" Romney for president. When the public was outraged, Jim DeMint said, "No, no, no. I supported him last time. Not sure about this time." But now he says Romney might talk himself out of this, using the old "states are the test kitchens for the nation" argument. But it really means Mitt just needs to name his price, because we've already established what he is. IMO, Lindsay Graham is the tougher of the two, because at least he doesn't try to sugarcoat things. Any guy with a PAC like DeMint's is plain ambitious. Period.
