— Ace I don't mean that to make fun of anybody. I include myself in that "our."
Me, personally? I am kind of really desperate for someone to come along I can just say "That's the guy!" to. (Or "That's the gal!")
Is Rick Perry a possible "That's the guy!" guy? I don't really know. Allah seems jazzed.
[W]hy not Perry? He has more than a decade of experience leading one of AmericaÂ’s biggest states, can boast economic growth at a moment when voters are desperate for relief from the malaise, would enjoy key regional support as a southerner, has budget-cutting cred to spare thatÂ’ll please tea partiers, and flashes enough personality to make him easily stand out at debates against other top-tier candidates like Romney, Pawlenty, and Daniels.
Rick Perry has that great quality I look for in a candidate: I don't know anything about him so I don't have any reason to be against him.
Perry has that "X Factor," and by "X Factor," I mean: I have no real idea who the heck he is.
Perry has something other candidates don't: I have not yet formed a hard opinion on why he is so awful.
But the way this year is going I give it 24 hours before pictures surface of him in a three-way with Elmo and Oscar the Grouch.

as long as he doesn't reach out to the politico's of 43, ie, Rove, to help him shape his message...
He has to strike a clear and sharp path towards reestablishment of states rights, limited federal government and a federal judiciary who isn't the most bestest branch of the three, but an equal one that has been unchecked by the other two since the 40's.
It's time for a shakeup... but I don't know if Perry has the people he needs around him to do it,... but then again, none of the others that are true conservatives do either...

Don't worry.
The RINO hunters who outed Bachmann, Cain, and Palin as "total Rinos" will be here to blast away yet again.
Remember, the only totally, totally pure non-rino is Christine O'Donnell's 2nd grade teacher's older cousin Bob who sniffs from the bag of visions on the corner of 9th and Figueroa.

On Sunday, Newt Gingrich, the former US House Speaker who last week threw his hat in the 2012 presidential race -- used Texas Gov. Rick Perry as a role model. He was deflecting a line of questioning from NBC Meet the Press host David Gregory, who had put him on the spot about calling Barack Obama a "food stamp president."
Gingrich insisted that he was simply talking about approaches to job creation, not sending a coded message of racism. "I follow the model that Rick Perry and others have used to create more jobs in Texas."
Oh well, boomlet over. Who's next?

A slimy operator, possibly less principled and and competent than George II, the former Texas governor.
Lots of potential scandals with how he's run things and with back room deals, too. Texas has been run by Perry in a very crony friendly way.

Gov. Rick Perry on Tuesday told a group of national Republicans that the 2012 presidential election would center on state sovereignty and limited intervention from Washington.
"The federal government was created by the states to be an agent for the states, not the other way around," Perry said at the Republican National Committee's state chairmen's meeting in Dallas. "The things they supposed to be doing, all too often, they are failures at. All the other things they decided they know best in, and are forcing themselves upon the state, they need to get out of."
Perry, the chairman of the Republican Governor's Association, said his group would work with the RNC to assure the GOP had sweeping victories next year, including winning the White House and adding to the party's majority of governors throughout the country.
The longest serving governor in Texas did not endorse a candidate for president, or express concern about what some Republicans have described as a weak field.
At a news conference after his speech, Perry told reporters that he had not reconsidered his decision not to run next year against Barack Obama.
"There are still a number of folks out there who haven't made a decision," he said. "I've made my decision. If I really believe in the 10th amendment, then being a governor of a state is where the action is."Posted by: Vic at May 17, 2011 03:20 PM (M9Ie6)

Oh Good God NO.
He has the Presidential hair, that much is true-
sadly, it is cloaking an empty space.
I didn't want to vote for him in the Governor's race, but we were stuck. The Dem was a liberal idiot from Houston.
In the Primary, we had Kay Bailey Hutchinson, who is quite the Washingtonian elitist- She actually said "we can have STATES deciding issues like that for themselves" IN TEXAS! No wonder she lost.
...and then we had some activist twit who sounded alright until she was exposed as a Paulbot and 9/11 truther.
So we were stuck with Perry. Good ol' varmit shootin' Perry. No word on if uttered his most famous political statement before he shot the coyote-
"ADIOS,MOFO"

Kay Bailey Hutchinson would have unleashed any shit that would stick during the governor's race. She tried, but nothing stuck.
Now, given the MFM's propensity to make shit up....it will be a rough ride, no doubt.
Also, he and Palin are great friends, so he would have her endorsement and fundraising machination.

I read at HotAir that the administration has started attacking Huntsman. I don't know if that means they think he's seriously planning on running. Well, I guess he is, sort of, because he just hired someone from Huck's team.
But I have yet to meet any Republican here in Utah who is a fan of Huntsman. They are mostly Romney supporters, some quite intensely because of the Olympics, and a few Palin supporters. My husband works in philanthropy, so he's been meeting many of the top LDS donors. They're almost all for Romney.
The folks I've spoken with who worked for Huntsman's gubernatorial races say that they feel betrayed by him. It's not so much that he's super-liberal as much as he's perceived as unprincipled. He abandoned his support for school vouchers, for example. And he signed Utah up for some regional cap and trade.
But I don't see that he's really a "liberal," per se. For example, I think his support for civil unions (which is cited as a sign of how liberal he is) is actually a pretty mainstream position in Republican circles. (He's still opposed to gay marriage.) He is reportedly consistently pro-life and governed that way in Utah.
I read that he loosened up liquor sales here in Utah, so he can't be all bad.

My husband and I are on different sides of this. He thought it was fine. So, like you, he is wrong.
My objection is using school enrollment as a means to meddle in families' health care decisions. Childhood vaccines for diseases that are contagious at school are fine. Go ahead and require those. But HPV is not contagious under school conditions, so it's not their business.
Plus, my recollection is that the vaccine is not well-tested or proven to be safe.

It's no secret at all that the Elders' trip to North Korea was viewed as extremely unhelpful by the governments both in Washington and Seoul. Chris Nelson reported on April 29 that Clinton reacted strongly when asked in a morning meeting if she wanted to meet with Carter. From the Nelson report:
The performance of President Carter and his delegation in N. Korea this week was either shameful or fatuous...or both...and exemplifies why Carter had no...zero...USG support going in, and even less coming out, per an alleged eye witness account of Sec. St. Clinton at the morning meeting the other day:
"Do you want to meet with Carter?" Clinton is looking at papers, and just says "No." Then she pauses, looks up and adds, "HELL no!!!"Posted by: IllTemperedCur at May 17, 2011 03:50 PM (7YzRS)
Plusses:
He's tough on state agencies in trying to meet the state budget. Has successfully instituted a rainy day fund. Has stood up to Obamao.
Strikes against him:
Trans Texas Corridor -- He just went about this the wrong way, too much land grab required via eminent domain. And was going to allow a European firm to do the work and reap the benefits in the form of tolls. He thought it was going to be his vision for the future to have high speed rail/ six lane limited access freeways with a utilities corridor for fiber optics, etc. Problem was the plan called for slicing ranches in half and bypassing every small and medium sized town (few or no stops or on-off-ramps).
There's the HPV vaccine thing, some for it, some against it.
My opinion is that he's a smart politico with a tin ear sometimes -- the TTC, for example. He's kind of a Bill Clinton type triangulator too.

But I think the problem is that the republicans are doubting themselves. BO succeeded, even after the 210 amazing election, to get them to do that. Why? They look like the most popular cheerleader who gets dumped by the captain of the football team for the intelligent nerd group geeky girl who suddenly starts looking really good senior year cause she knows she's nabbed her slot in the ivys. Now, the most popular cheerleader who is going to state school is crying and maoning and wondering how she lsot taht great prize of a guy to HER. Thsi is the republicans they are a hot mess. But oddly enough, it's good. When dreamy brett gave the number of days to the convention and the election tonight it made me think what the hurry actually is. This stupid process is too long. It was too long last time which is why BO won. We as a country still have recuperated for the last enlection and now the election king wants to submit us to another year plus of campaigning cvause he loves it, to him it's great fun, he gets to go all over the country and see adoring fans and forget about presidentin and it's all ok, I mean who doesn't want to go on tour. It's still fresh and new to him but the fans are drained and so are the American people. Maybe the reupblicans are depriving him of the one things that keeps him going, keeps the adrenalin pumping, his "presidentin campaign tour" and that is a good thing maybe.

Perry wanted to force Texan girls to take this HPV vaccine, and there appeared to be an improper relationship with Merck. I also think a lot of the highway plans were made with Perry's friends in mind, and did not serve Texas well at all.
Texans bankrolling an amazingly expensive way for oil and products to flow from Mexico into the USA as fast as possible helps the rest of the country a lot more than it helps Texas. But this is a mixed issue. I have an open mind on Perry.

Plus, he just doubled-down on global warming.
No dice.
Meanwhile I just listened to Chris Christie on Sean Hannity's radio show demonstrating how it's done, especially for a Governor of a blue state: (paraphrased) "sure Sean, the climate seems to be warming, but I think it's an open question as to whether it's man-made or not, and I'm especially unconvinced that any of the proposed policy responses to it would do anything except kill jobs and hurt the economy."
And he also said during the interview that he was pro-life and pro-2nd Amendment -- felt that New Jersey's current laws on the books were more than enough and that there was no need to add to them. Also cited his pardon of Brian Aitken in NJ as an example where he felt the state's gun laws weren't being enforced in a fair and equitable manner. Perfect thread of the needle.
Damn I wish he was running in 2012. But he's clearly keeping his options open for 2016 and beyond, the way he's talking.

Y-not et al- I absolutely agree with you on the HPV vaccine. It was some major marketing and lobbying by Merck [after the Vioxx debacle] to push that particular pice of crap. So it was a vaccine for 4 or 5 of the HPV strains. I believe there are about 40 or so that can cause cervical cancer. A lot of money in the pockets of the Merck shareholders- and the politicians they bought.

But it's not just an issue of that. It's a question of whether or not we want public schools to serve as one-stop shopping for social services.
My feeling is that every single thing our public schools get involved in that are not related to education detract from the mission and weaken the quality of education our kids get. It's just not appropriate to use schools to deliver health care and other social services. The kids are a captive audience. Making parents take the active step of "opting out" is not fair to the parents or the kids.

ok, NY does the HPV vaccination too, you can't go to middle school without it. my mom had no choice. But, the doctor said it was a rare thing in teens and college kids and that it was being given to protect you as an adult. the intimation was, if you get it as a teen, you weren't the nicest girl in school.

Perry flirted with a couple of ideas (eminent domain on the Trans Texas Corridor and the HPV vaccine), but was smart enough to see they were very unpopular and dropped them. So he can self-correct.
In his first term he presided over a paper-thin Republican majority in the state house. Last two budgets (well, this one they're working on and the last one delivered) had/will have actual cuts in spending (Lt. Gov Dewhurst has been leading the charge on that). There was one odious little tax, the new franchise tax, but other than that we're better off than most of the rest of the country.
Job growth, reasonable on illegal immigration (not kicking ass, but not giving up shit), he's put up a sincere effort to fight Obama's EPA on facility permits.
I'm not crazy about the guy but I certainly don't hate him. I wonder if the rest of the country can get enthused about another Texan in the White House.

In other news:
A man who won $2 million on a Michigan lottery show has told a TV station that he still uses food stamps.
Leroy Fick of Bay County admitted he still swipes the electronic card at stores, nearly a year after winning a jackpot on "Make Me Rich!" He told WNEM-TV in Saginaw that more than half the prize went to taxes. Fick says the Department of Human Services told him he could continue to use the card, which is paid with tax dollars. He told WNEM: "If you're going to ... try to make me feel bad, you aren't going to do it."

He can be handled by political realities. That alone puts him in a category above people like Mitt Romney. Though it also might put him in one below Bush, who was stubborn about his principles, thank goodness.
"Look at that face! The creator has practically written the word "crook" all over his forhead."
I feel the same way. Even though it might be a little unfair, I get the impression he's a politician first. That actually isn't such a bad thing. His coalition requires Tea Party support. We can survive with a politician who caters to the Tea Party out of cynical ambition.

I think this is largely true, aside from the TTC nonsense. There is a need for more Texan infrastructure, though, so perhaps this isn't just doing something to do something. The Merck vaccine was dropped quickly enough too.
Yeah, I think Rick Perry would be a better President than most GOP candidates and any Democrat one.

We've already got a slew of vaccinations that are required before the kid enters public school.
Shit, I remember standing in line and having the school nurse give me my vaccinations.
Let's look at this way. The SCOTUS has already told the states that they must educate any child that shows up at school. This includes illegals from third world countries. Countries that have not wiped out fairly common diseases like TB, any number of poxes, pertussis. If my kid is going to be in contact with these children, I want him vaccinated. And yes, I want the third world refugee children vaccinated as well. Otherwise, we're looking at an outbreak.
(And yes, I know that HPV doesn't fall into communicable diseases, I'm just discussing required vaccinations in general)
Finally, if you don't want your child vaccinated against common and easily prevented childhood diseases, please home school.

This was exactly my problem as well. You're taking a vaccine that was never tested on women under 16 and asking 12 year olds to get it. Also, with no long-term studies on the efficacy. They don't know if it will wear off in ten years or not. It's just a stupid move to do by executive order, and shows that all Perry was looking at were dollar signs. It is NOT a cancer vaccine and it makes me crazy when people say that. It does not protect a girl from anything but a couple of types of HPV which may cause cancer. You can get cervical cancer from other things.
Perry sets off some alarm bells with me, but I don't think he's running so ultimately it doesn't matter.

Why should it cost more than $10,000 to teach someone something? There is no real reason, right? It's 2011, and we have better ways of sharing information. Education should be cheaper, not far more expensive. Rick Perry has said nothing about reducing the standards of our schools. You need to correct yourself. Consider this, though: The Governor issued an Executive Order, bypassing the Legislature, to inject all girls in the 6th Grade with this shit.
Do you honestly believe that the Parents' decision to "opt-out" will not be met with some pushback?
You would immediately be put into the Weirdo Parent who does not believe in SCIENCE category, and CPS would swoop in to save your kids.
This a moot point since the Legislature killed this issue some time ago.

One of the downsides of youtube pulling copyrighted material is I don't have a source for good fair use comedic teaching, e.g. Yosemite Sam walking into the powder room with a torch for a light and ending stratospherically with "Dragons is so stupid". Key bit in that passage: the guy's got a decade of experience actually in charge of stuff (in a perfect world Sarah Palin would still be governor instead of dropping out mid-first-term, which was a game-changer for me), is more conservative than not, and pisses of President Gutsy Call to no end, so the base is happy.
Bad news is almost as important as his qualifications---the optics. Perry looks like a sleazy mortgage broker circa 2007 used car salesman, like Angelo Mozillo's kid brother or something. Image means everything.

I caught a lot of crap earlier for saying Perry is running.
He has the bankroll, good backers (and growing) and more importantly is right with America on most issues.
Remember George W? Yeah, they said he had no chance either. Long shot and all that. Then Democrats tried the drunk driving charges and National Guard shit. What happened? Well like Yukon Cornelius said; "Nothing!". In fact- two terms.
The only guy they will find with Elmo is Pawlenty. Not for any reason other than he thinks it will play to his "aw-shucks" image...and because he believes it too impolite to confront Obama.

2 - I want someone who can get the base excited and motivated and activated.
3 - I want someone who is a real conservative.
4 - I definitely do not want someone who refers to the Dems as his friends across the aisle. I don't recall Churchill ever refering to Hitler as his friend across the channel. I cannot imagine Bristol Palin turning into Meggy Mac
Perry might be a good choice -- I mentioned him in Nov 2004 (when I used to blog) as a possible 2008 candidate, but I think I'll go with Palin for the time being. Can you imagine McCain beore the 2010 election saying (pardon me if I have the quote wrong) "Nancy Pelosi, the people have spoken and you're fired!"

What I remember about it too was the reporter tried to make himself come off better in the exchange by deleting his statements and questions, he kept telling Perry he was up against a deadline, and at the end said "Try as I may, I'm just not gonna wait that long", which Perry was smart enough to repeat at the end. They changed it to read "Try as I may I'm just not gonna win this one".

-side thoughts-
Us non-lefties in fear of someone screwing us once they get in office shred apart everyone who make the mistake of siding with us!
Especially odd that conservatives look to politicians to do what should be the job of the people, activists, organizations, conservative media.
Politicians are like cockroaches, (most that survive any length of time) control the media for protection and support, fund their campaigns, guarantee them voters, and have lobbyists write the legislation then they will vote for it.
The left who puts blind faith in government knows they have to do these things to pass their agenda, why do conservatives prefer to demand and whine and alienate and ignore and throw under the bus everyone who crosses them and then endlessly complain about how their agenda never gets passed?
I'm not pointing to anyone specific just this clearly unproductive default behavior in general. If you want to influence Washington who you donate time/money to what media you support is more important then who you vote for. Its sad but it is what it is. Im not suggesting we become a bigger monster then the left has become, just that the rules have changed and we have not adapted. We are a long long way from becoming the near hegemonic beast that they are.

Actually, he and the Bushes hate each other. A lot. The whole family - which of course includes Dick Cheney and Karl Rove. http://tinyurl.com/3hxgoxe

As some as saying, it bit the dust against Rick's wishes. The real hero in that case was the Texas Constitution making sure our governor is just too damn weak to make too big of a mess.

Why?
Because she fights, and because the chattering class (including many here at AOSHQ) don't want her.
When you try to take my gun away, I will latch onto it tighter.

Slow down there partner. First, this is TEXAS. It IS another country. The folks that live here know that. We do what we want. The rest of you pussy whiny smaller funny lookin/soundin 'states' can go jump in the lake. We'll be just fine without any of you.
Second, the Gardisil thing was always and ever about big Rick TELLING all us dads that the state was going to stab our little girls whether we allowed it or not. Key insight to TEXAS dads-Don't ever think you're going to tell me what to do. Certain legislators and pols were advised that they could participate in watching us take our country back starting in Austin, if they didn't get on board and stop this shenanigan.
Third, turns out the cure was and is worse than the disease. Stop repeating talking points and read for yourself.
As to Rick for Pres? Hey, so far he's lookin' a darn sight better than anybody else. Here, he's the common reminder of teen cancer, trans TEXAS corridor, and toll roads. On the plus side can you name another Governor that shows up and is welcomed at TEA parties?
I'll stick with Sarah.

Always campaigns on border security and then does nothing after the election.
Average level of corruption for Texas pols.
Positives:
Most of the other candidates suck worse.
I said I would never vote for Perry but if it comes down to him vs Daniels, T-Paw, Mitt, Newt... I might have to eat crow.

Rick Perry is to Republicans what John Edwards was to democrats. He's all style points and good hair. Not much else there.
I live in TX, have never voted for a democrat at above the county level, and I still hate his ass. He's weaker than well water.
