As I  said in advance I spend the holiday cleaning and organizing my garage/workshop.

So IÂ’m removing two boxes from a shelf, and what do I see behind them?

A brand new in the box Bushmaster flat top M-4forgery! And a nice note from my Father in law..

A nice addition to my 2 carry handle Bushmaster X-15's.

Being home alone wasnÂ’t so bad after all.

I best be careful least I poke my eye out.

I'm sure rickb will have his own interpretation, but if you can't conceal a .45, go to a forty, if you can't conceal a .40, go to a parabellum (with premiium ammo), if you can't conceal a nine, buy a bowie knife.

74 Chemjeff, the argrument goes like this.  If you can pack a .45, that's a pretty good manstopper.  9mm - ok.  Some say anything smaller is not so effective.  Others (I among them) would emphasize shot placement above all other factors.  My carry gun is a .380 because I'm a smaller guy and we wear lots of light weight clothing in my area (hard to conceal anything much larger).  In my truck and home, it's .45 and 12-gauge respectively.

78 Dinner at my daughter's house tonight.  She is in a frenzy as the bird was going to be done 2 hours ahead of time.  I told her to cover it and turn the temp way down.  Whe It came time to carve it something didn't look right.  She cooked it upside down.I turned it over and it looked like a cadaver.  We cranked the heat to 450 and gave it 15 minutes, still white.  I broke out a stick of butter, basted ot and another 15 minutes.  It started to get a little color.  She had brined it and the meat was good but the skin, what wasn't stuck to the bottom of the pan, wasn't that great crispy, crunchy, salty stuff I have come to enjoy so much.  All in all it was a fine meal and we absolutely had a great Christmas.  In a few years we will all be telling stories and laughing at the turkey from hell.

Even if it weren't the only type.  Two to center mass and get the hell out of the area!  The perp will know he's been shot.  There are many stories of people being shot with large caliber bullets and living to tell the tale and just as many of people getting popped with .22s and falling over dead.  Find something that fits your hand well and that you can shoot confidently.  Practice, practice, practice.

77-- Ruger 380. Would you use/carry it?

Yes.  It's pocket-sized and lightweight.  Easy to keep hidden.

Safe?  Only as safe as the way it's handled:  There's no external safety, so unless walking alone in a bad area, I wouldn't have a round chambered.  Standard magazine holds 6 rounds, 10-round extended mags are available, though they stick out too far for concealment (but nice to have for backup.)

Reliable?  I believe Ruger makes a fine product.  My LCP will handle any brand ammo I've tried in it thus far, TMJ or hollowpoint.  Sights are a bit more difficult to see in low light than some other guns, IMO.

My .02, fwiw.

105 The thing is, whatever you are firing, keep doing so until the attacker/intruder stops moving or the gun runs out of ammo. And don't try to be a hero and wing 'em. If you live through it, you don't want to try and explain to a judge why, if you thought you were in imminent danger, you chose to nick the guy instead of, ahem, stopping him.

121 chemjeff, for a female girl-type person of the feminine persuasion, a .380 is an excellent choice, IMO. I can fire my husband's .45, but not confidently. I had a 9mm, and it was ok but I wasn't crazy about the accuracy. Probably just the individual pistol, but still. My .380 is light, fits in a purse or under the seat of my car, and I don't have a problem firing a whole magazine of ammunition out of it at the range.
Kudos on your sister's bf, by the way.

Any good stories about last minute shopping / goobers gumming up the checkout lines?

Mine is an advisory to 2 ladies to rethink your decision to go to the bank (open 9 - 12) on Saturday 12/24 and have a lengthy discussions with the tellers about your problems with the cleared balance and activity fees.  When each of you have monopolized the teller windows for plus15 minutes, it's time to pull back, regroup, and come back any other day.  Just look at the long line behind you snaking through lobby.

rickb okay so you wouldn't be concerned that it would not fire, or that it would blow up in your hand or something?

I have a LCP, put several hundred rounds through it. no failures.

I also have  a .45, but it's to big to conceal in the Oklahoma summer.

The LCP fits right in my shorts pocket and it's so light you don't even notice it.

131 Merry Christmas, TBM!

Likewise to all of the ons and ettes.

CJ, a Ruger .380 is an excellent piece to have handy.  Easily concealed and, with a little practice, a very deadly weapon.  Most shooters prefer a larger caliber, but I know cops who carry .380s as backup weapons.  Personally, I love my Ruger LC-9 (9 mm), but that's just a personal preference.

I don't know what the laws are elsewhere, but there used to be the old saying about, if you see someone breaking into your house, shoot them and drag them over the threshold. That's no longer the case here. If someone is attempting break into your home, you can shoot to, ahem, stop them. It is assumed that if they are breaking in, it isn't to bring you home-baked cookies so you can shoot through the door or window. No need to drag them inside.

My sister is a lefty who really hates her daughter-in -law. (her daughter-in-law is a nutcase and deserves the hate,) but, she made a comment about the fact that her daughter-in-law was a typical nutcase from Appalachia Pennsylvania. You know, in-breeds and all. Biting my tongue, I just told her that their family must be Steelers fans. I love my sister, but she has told me that she wishes Limbaugh, Beck, and Palin would all die. I just retorted at that time that I would take delight in doing violence to Behar. She didn't like that. I stayed sober and was nice this year.

I love my sister, but I'm under no illusions: she's very selfish in many ways, and she's prone to drama.  It wouldn't surprise me if she's doing this deliberately because she's still angry that mom wouldn't give her money to cover rent (she had to ask me for help).  I'm visiting mom for Christmas, and I've already called Dad, both sets of grandparents, and several friends in order to wish them Merry Christmas.

259 Mom n dad divorced. Mom is a martyr but I love her and am very close with her. Dad, I am close with in a distanced sort of way ( no huggy no touchy) mostly because of his worldly, materialistic ho of a wife that runs him. Siblings spend too much time blaming parents and the divorce for every little thing instead of moving on. Gotta keep moving. As a parent of a developmentally disabled and highly Impulsive child in puberty, I have no time for dwelling and living in the past. Every day presents many emotional and physical struggles, and on lucky occasions, a spark that rejuvenates. I gave up a super career but consider myself a professional mom!

I miss the old days when the stewardesses and nurses all wore short little skirts/dresses. They certainly knew how to do it back then.

Or else my memories are really just fantasies, either way, they are in the bank.

One thing to look forward to CDR, you will be bringing some stuff up with a color you have never seen before in your life. Plus you get to milk the whole "I'm just getting over pneumonia" thingy. Sitting at home. guests just left. Fire still going but needs some tending to, as does my glass of Port.

Had a very comfy warm modest loving family Christmas today for which I am grateful and happy. Blessings too numerous to count, and I wish/hope/pray that everyone hereabouts did too.

Giant roast beast, Yorkshire and gravy. Sunny and cold. Fireplace crackling away. Neighbors and old friends coming and going all day sharing food and cocktails.

Yes, I almost burned the tablecloth lighting the brandy-soaked cake. Again.
No, no one got Crazy Uncle-sauced. We've been simmering all day though, and may shut down or shift gears and go out in a few. Cabbie's number is on the fridge.

Thus, a Merry Christmas Night to all Morons. Liberty will reign in America. When my people come to rule this planet, your names will be on the protected rolls. No harm will come to you. When you die, you will achieve total consciousness. So you've got that going for you...which is nice.

331 Every so often, some really terrible acts would come into town trying to break into show business using the most lame excuse possible. One time, when they were trying to set up the acts for the coming week, this guy walks in with a German Shepherd.

That, in itself, wasn't terribly unusual -- dog acts were reasonably popular -- but the guy had no apparatus and, frankly, didn't have that "motivate the dog hustle" you see a lot in dog shows.

So the theater owner asks, "what's the act?" And the guy says, "er, talking dog". And Gramps rolls his eyes and says, "look, I don't want to hear you do the usual garbage -- what's over your head? roof, roof; can you describe sandpaper? rough, rough; what's your name? Ralph, Ralph; if you split something in two equal pieces, what is each piece to the whole? 'arf, 'arf; what do horses have at the end of their legs? hoof, hoof.......we've heard it all before, and it just doesn't work. If you're going to go with any of that, you might as well just pack up now and get out.

So the guy gets up and turns to leave, and the dog says, "that's not fair, Ralph really is my name."

Raw liver, and again, not so much the pver, just let her lick up the blood. The liver should come in a container of sorts like sour cream, only cardboard. It usually has a fair amount of blood in the bottom. Calves liver.

I mean, if she likes the liver, go for it, but the blood will give her straight up iron. It's a short term fix for her, since she has an actual disease, but I have used it on stray kittens who were almost totally dead from fleas...fed them blood right out of an eye dropper.

346 Heh. Evidently, Insty thought it as funny as I did.

SWIFT handles wires between banks. So if you want to wire 10000 US Dollars into a bank in Canada as Canadian Dollars, they let the sending and receiving banks hook up and transfer funds without accidentally ending up in Zimbabwean whatchamacallits.

They do this by having reserved currency codes that are programmed into their system. Now, if Greece gets bumped out of the Euro, they'll undoubtedly go back to the Drachma -- and anyone transferring to- or from- a Greek bank will need a Drachma code. In the past, SWIFT has added codes, then designated them as "if-issued, when-issued" to make sure that it works when needed but isn't used in advance. They can do all the programming in advance and get it thoroughly tested, and when the applicable government does its thing, there's no panic and no delays.

There was a rumor a while back that there was a code for Deutschmarks that was pre-registered and tested, BTW. Now, with this article, they're saying that SWIFT won't preload and test post-Euro currency codes to avoid stampedes......but that means that -- should things get so bad as to bounce Greece out to the Drachma -- it may be a week afterward before anyone could actually transact drachmae without physically wheeling around wheelbarrows of banknotes. With all those islands and mountains, that could give rise to a clusterfuck of Olympic proportions.

SO everyone wore their paper crowns, and we cracked up read our bad jokes played with our cheezy toys and then opened gifts. My mom even made sure that my friend got a nice silk scarf in her favorite blue grey color. It was awesome. Dad gave me a lovely blue and smoky topaz bracelet with little diamons in it, and mom got me sheets. Sister got me socks, but by far the best present next to the bracelet...

was the Hello Kitty sammitch press and the Hello Kitty toaster my friend who works in DC got me. SQUEEEEEE! NOW I  CAN MAKE GRILLED CHEESE SAMMITCHES WITH HELLO KITTY'S FACE ON THEM!!!

I agree, Tammy. I think what confused the morons was that she had a big bow on her front and one of the ends drooped down below her boobs that gave a false impression that the angle of her body was like / that; but when you ignored the bow and connected the dots so to speak from her belly to just under her boobs under the loose bow end you could easily see that the angle of her body was indeed a nice \ angle leading to the bottom of her boobs. That was no muffin top.

And here's another cheesecake holiday greeting.

Ah, Janet Pilgrim, IIRC.

Reminds me of a favorite cartoon that ran in one of the anniversary issues of Playboy. Probably the 25th as that was the age when almost every detail would be memorized.

A boy, perhaps ten, is asleep in his bed. On the wall over his head is a 50's era centerfold. Two men are standing by the half-open door and one is shining a flashlight on the centerfold. He says, "We can't make him take it down. It's his grandmother."

I think back to the late 70's/early 80's, when practically every girl had a tiny bit of a muffin top going on because they were wedged-into skin-tight low-riding pseudo-designer jeans that you'd need a prybar to unlatch......

Course, they couldn't "muffin" very much 'cause the "waistline" was only about half an inch to the north of the mons pubis... "Belly" started a few inches above that.

I think back -- my gf's roommate in college had to lay flat, legs elevated together, hyperventilate, and nearly empty her lungs in order to scrunch the final inches and button the fly of her jeans (I got the description second-hand, but could well believe it from the evidence at hand). How did we all survive such a time?

The more things change the more they stay the same. My mother a teenager in the last years of the 1940s. tells how she would put her jeans on wet to make them form fitting. Attracting a good mate makes women do crazy stuff. But the dumb ass crap guys do makes tight jeans pale in comparison since we often have to go to the hospital when we try to impress women.

Posted by: Berserker at December 25, 2011 10:17 PM (FMbng)

410 I don't know. I got to the age where I had to start raising my glasses to read some stuff about three years ago. But the 40" Toshiba panel I got for the living room early this year still manages to look hugely better than any NTSC display to my vision. The upconverting the PS3 and Xbox do for regular DVDs is quite noticeable and Blu-ray discs are really impressive with the right material.

Plus, my 82-year old mother can see the difference, despite not being able to understand why I was getting a new set to replace the 27" tube. At least, not until she saw what it does for herself. Funny thing is, even without factoring inflation, it's the least I've ever paid for a new TV by a substantial margin. With inflation, it's about a fifth of the cost of the 30" tube model I bought in 1993, making the new set about the same cost as I was quoted to repair the old one when it died five years ago.

413 NTSC CRTs just suck, to be sure......but if you wanted something for a bomb shelter, they'd be a better choice than LCDs. The fluorescent backlight for a standard LCD screen is only rated for 5-year life.....and replacing it involves a complete rebuild that would easily outcost a new screen.

Oh, for sure, standard stocking stuffers for sure. I love getting him new pics. His favorite have been the pin up girls, imagine that! This year I found him this punch thing that he can make pics out of anything with. He liked that a lot, too.

epobirs, my mama has very poor vision now due to detached retinas in both eyes, and we got her a larger flat screen TV and she really noticed a difference. She's been thrilled with it, though she cannot figure out the remote for much more than changing the channel and adjusting the volume!

Well, Thor lasted an hour playing video games, and is now back at Guitar Port. I am dying to have him start Skyrim, damn it!

How did that work out? We had this shredder that slowly went on the fritz so that we ended up feeding single sheets and reversing every few to clear out chad. Obviously, it was well past its prime when it could shred a credit card, so we have a stack of credit cards next to it waiting to be shredded [yeah, I know about the security implications.....]

I've been eying them, thinking that they'd make dandy guitar picks with that punch widget, but I haven't ordered it yet. Does it really work? How does it like credit cards?

Posted by: cthulhu at December 25, 2011 10:38 PM (kaalw)

418 LCD backlighting is being phased out. Within a few years it will all be LED down to the lowest price level. Those are expected to last a lot longer and be easier to service as well. If I was stocking a bomb shelter I'd go a bit smaller and have some units in reserve. Which is more doable than with the old tube thanks to their smaller size. Plus the lower power draw would be a big win as well. Tammy, you may want to look into some of the universal remotes designed for low-vision users. Really big keys with raised characters. Search for 'giant remote' for one example that is pretty inexpensive. Gadgets for the aging is a growth market in the developed world. I'm seeing more and more places pitching themselves as support accessories for boomers. Which makes me feel swell as I regard myself as a tail-end boomer. One I found just now is boomersupply.com but I saw a better organized one early his week whose name eludes me at the moment.

426 420 LCD backlighting is being phased out. Within a few years it will all be LED down to the lowest price level.

Posted by: epobirs at December 26, 2011 02:41 AM (kcfmt)

Yep. And right behind that is another wave with an even bigger boost to efficiency and reliability -- modulated backlight.

LCD's are like shadow-puppets. If you're looking at one right now, perhaps reading black text on a white screen, the white is a fluorescent tube washed across the screen and the black are LiquidCrystalDisplay shadows blocking the light.

If you have a newer LED display, there is a construct of LED's that, blended together, forms "white" behind your LCD display, but you're still seeing LCD shadows against a lit LED back.

If 2/3 of your screen is black, however, why light up the LED's and make the LCD's shadow them, when you could just not light the LED's in the first place? You can get blacker-blacks using less energy. Problem is, it takes a while for the LED's to light up......so you'd have to have some advance knowledge of what part of the screen will light up in a bit.

Posted by: cthulhu at December 25, 2011 10:53 PM (kaalw)

That would probably be easiest done by buffering the incoming signal so that the processor knows what's next. It would only need a delay of microseconds, depending on the processor, and the end user would never be able to tell unless there was another TV nearby.

Posted by: GGE, Exclusive Member of the ONT at December 25, 2011 10:56 PM (yh0zB)

429 Search under 'simplified remote control.' Lot of options there. The onscreen display with modern cable/satellite systems helps because the full number set isn't really necessary. Just volume up/down, menu, and a direction pad. Plus power on/off if you must. Lot of TVs these days have no convenient way to do this without a remote. The ACER I use as my desktop monitor has a real set of control buttons on the side but the Toshiba doesn't.

Part of it is destroying the cc's, part of it is being able to lend picks without having shelled out money for them. Part of it is having spare picks in every case "for emergencies".

433 Most of those LED issues have been mastered. There is a reason it took almost a decade for them to start becoming the standard from the time they started declaring them to be the future.

I'm a longtime CES attendee, especially after it became  part of my work in the mid-90s. (I was doing magazine work then but a few years later we started a subsidiary that specializes in IT services for the event business.) I occasionally look at my TV and think with amazement how this was once something solely for the wealthy. I remember when the best HDTV demos were on massive CRT units weighing hundreds of pounds and costing absurd amounts if they were a shipping product at all.

But that was well less than twenty years ago. A very short time compared to how long it was all NTSC. And Ultra HD is well underway as far as defining the spec. Movie makers shooting with the new 4K cameras are already planning for when this transition from theatrical to home consumer markets. And this will affect the computer side as well. 4K support is being baked into the next generation of integrated graphics hardware in Intel chips, with everybody else expected to follow suit. It may seem a long way off but remember how recently you could see that a GPU supported a now common display resolution and thought, "Who the hell has a monitor that does that?"

435 It seems so recent that my sister paid a thousand bucks for a ViewSonic 17" 1024x768 monitor that weighed about 80 pounds. Then a few years after that, I thought I had scored big time when I got a 21" Sun (I forget the OEM) workstation monitor that let me display an amazing 1600x1200. Only $300!

If only it worked that way for groceries.

436 I got a new radio for the Baja that plays from a flash drive like the Mustang, it also will hook up to my phone so now I will have everything in the Baja (except the steering wheel controls that I do use and the voice commands that I don't use) that I have on the 'Stang, audio system wise. I wish I had heated seats in the Baja, it's funny that I didn't think I would ever use them.

Good Morning Morons. Today is Dec 26, 2011. Boxing Day in Great Britain.  It is a sort of second Christmas day now. Originally it was “Christmas Day” in which the upper class gave presents to the servants and “less fortunate”.

Posted by: Vic at December 26, 2011 03:39 AM (YdQQY)

492

Here is why you can not trust even seeing shit on TV "news"

Ron Paul did not storm out of CNN interview. They just made it look that way. Recall ABC editing the Sarah Palin interview in 2008 trading answers to questions to make her look stupid.

I would like to think our candidates would have learned by now that they need to take independent simultaneous (time stamped) video of every transaction between an R candidate and the press for release on the intertubes.  If the press throws the old "proprietary data" flag, then they should walk away.

I am not holding my breath however.

He always had a DoD camera crew simultaneously taping every television appearance.  It was a condition of him granting the interview.

Never saw a "gotcha" interview of him,  did we?  Oh,  they hated him and made up analysis of his policies to suit their view,  but he always controlled his interviews.

That should be standard GOP policy.

Posted by: chemjeff on the phone at December 25, 2011 09:38 PM (9PlD2)

chemjeff,

I'm a little late to the party but the Ruger LCP is a fine conceal carry weapon (IMHO).  Take mine everywhere with a Crossbreed holster.  If you are looking at the Ruger, you owe it to yourself to also look at the S&W Bodyguard.  It comes with a laser sight and has a safety (which my Ruger does not).  The extra cost for the built in laser with the S&W is actually cheaper than the Ruger with an add-on laser.

508 Don Black, director of the white nationalist Web site Stormfront, said in an interview that several dozen of his members were volunteering for Mr. Paul’s presidential campaign, and a site forum titled “Why is Ron Paul such a favorite here?” has no fewer than 24 pages of comments. “I understand he wins many fans because his monetary policy would hurt Jews,” read one. Far-right groups like the Militia of Montana say they are rooting for Mr. Paul as a stalwart against government tyranny… The white supremacists, survivalists and anti-Zionists who have rallied behind his candidacy have not exactly been warmly welcomed. “I wouldn’t be happy with that,” Mr. Paul said in an interview Friday when asked about getting help from volunteers with anti-Jewish or antiblack views. But he did not disavow their support. “If they want to endorse me, they’re endorsing what I do or say — it has nothing to do with endorsing what they say,” said Mr. Paul, who is now running strong in Iowa for the Republican nomination… Mr. Black of Stormfront said the newsletters helped make him a Ron Paul supporter. “That was a big part of his constituency, the paleoconservatives who think there are race problems in this country,” Mr. Black said. It's never too early if you are at risk. A couple of years ago, when I was 45, I had a persistent cough after a bout of the flu. I eventually dragged myself in to the local clinic to confirm that I'd picked up pneumonia in my weakened state and that was the current problem after the flu had departed. They gave me scrips for a course of antibiotics and an inhaler in case I got into a respiratory distress situation. Pretty expensive. The preventative vaccination would likely have cost a fair bit less.
