Overnight Open Thread-? Edition [CDR M]
— Open Blogger

Well, my fellow morons, it's another Caturday and the weather absolutely sucked here today. I was looking forward to going to the NAS Oceana airshow but no, mother nature had to let it rain all damn day. Oh well. It would've been nice to see the Blues during the celebration of the 100th Anniversary of Naval Aviation. Click the following link to take an interactive tour of Naval Aviation. Century Over The Seas.

I actually remember some of these rides. Yeah, I said it. I'm old. Now get off my lawn! Closed Disneyland Rides.

Ok, not really but pretty damn funny. What if C-3PO was voiced by a gang banger keepin' it real?

Celebrities Gone Astray

Actress Kim Delaney decided to get her swerve on before giving the intro for the Liberty Medal Award that was presented to former SECDEF Robert Gates.

"Army Wives" actress gets escorted off stage after appearing disheveled and disoriented at the Liberty Medal Award presentation for Robert Gates at the National Constitution Center Sept. 22.

Longtime actress Kim Delaney, star of the popular television series “Army Wives,” was escorted off stage at the National Constitution Center Thursday night after delivering a stilted, and at times unintelligible, speech for the Liberty Medal Award presentation to Former Defense Secretary Robert Gates.

It is unclear what was wrong with the television star, but she appeared disheveled as she struggled to read a speech, which partly described her characterÂ’s role on Army Wives, off of the teleprompter.

“As I try to comfort wives, husbands, families, fathers, children...loved ones, made good, what I’ve learned is the Constitution Center,” Delaney says.

DelaneyÂ’s long pauses and jumbled sentences were cut off when a voiceover came on and an employee wearing a head set came on the stage and walked Delaney away.

Evidently, they are trying to blame the teleprompter for this. Not buyin' it but if there is a small chance of it being true, I hope to God they get SCOAMF to start using it!

Solyndra Fall-Out And The DoD

Hmmm. Need to do some more digging on this. Solyndra Fall-Out Could Tank Solar For Military Bases. So the DOE wants to front this company $344M and on top of that, Google has chipped in $280M in exchange for a cut of customer payments. Bank of America Merrill Lynch is also involved, providing "debt financing for the project, as well as advisory and administrative services." Interesting to note that this is the second deal of this nature that BoA has undertaken in recent months in support of Green Energy initiatives. This other one was Project Amp with the DOE chipping in 80% of $1.4 Billion. You don't think this zombie bank is being controlled by the government do you? This could all be fine and dandy but knowing how Green Energy seems to be more scam than true benefit, I'm going to be mighty suspicious.

Microwave Weapon

Hmmm. Air Force Test Electronics-Frying Missile.

ItÂ’s no secret that the military has been working on weapons that can knock out enemy electronics without causing physical damage for a looong time. Now the Air Force is one step closer to making such devices a reality. Earlier this year the Air Force successfully test fired the Counter-electronics High-powered Microwave Advanced Missile Project (CHAMP) for the first time.

CHAMP is basically a missile containing a microwave emitter that’s powerful enough to scramble electronic systems that it is aimed at. The ultimate goal of the program is to test the feasibility of installing the system — which would fire off microwave beams of various intensity at specific targets — on a larger vehicle. Or, as CHAMP-maker (ha!) Boeing dramatically says, this test “sets the stage for a new breed of nonlethal but highly effective weapon systems.”

The 5 Most Badass War Heroes Who Never Held A weapon

Interesting read. Surprised I had never heard of Bill Millin. Just insane to think of doing that on D-Day.

So, he ordered his piper, Bill Millin, to go ashore on one of the main landing points for the invasion of Normandy and wail on a set of bagpipes. Once on the beach, Millin calmly walked up and down at the water's edge, playing while carnage exploded and people died all around him.
With other soldiers frantically gesturing at him to find some cover and just really having a war all over the place, Millin walked slowly and bolt upright, playing "Blue Bonnets Over the Border." Millin later talked to some of the Germans who had been captured to ask why they never shot him, and discovered it was because they thought he had gone mad.

The Stormtrooper Groper

Yeah, that's a real criminal there in the pic. One of the Top 10 Most Ridiculous Costumed Criminals.

27 year old Dorothy MacSwoon was accused of sexually assaulting 10 NYU students over the course of two years. Which doesn't sound like that many if you're out on a groping spree, but apparently something like 62% of college students have been molested or sexually harassed in some way on the NYU campus.

What makes it more remarkable is that she did so while dressed as a Stormtrooper, a neo-facist officer of the Galactic Empire as depicted in the film series, "Star Wars".

Now, this isn't the first time that there has been a story of someone dressing up and fondling people, but it is unique in the fact that it was a woman doing this, and also that she apparently had a website dedicated to Stormtrooper fetish photos.

Nice video of our troops in action, JDAMs blastin' and Taliban dyin' but mostly Taliban dyin'.

The Freakonomics blog talked about that too but implied it really wasn't that big of a factor.

"They found that:  Â“(i) occupational fitness and strength demands significantly affect weight, (ii) cigarette smoking (and being a cigarette smoker) significantly decreases weight, (iii) food stamp receipt significantly increases weight, and (iv) urban sprawl significantly increases weight.” The decline in cigarette smoking, however, only makes up about 2% of weight increase, and the authors saw their criteria show only small percentage changes in weight measures as a whole, as opposed to other studies with much higher numbers."

Yes, that is true, but from the info CDR M provided, the lack of smoking amongst the general population is only a small factor amongst all the factors associated with weight gain.

Still, it is preferred to have obesity as a problem vs starvation.

46 Gushka , I went through this with a staph (sp ?) infection a few years back . Started as a small red circle on my elbow . Pills . Did not work . Infection spread from my elbow to my wrist . Time for an IV , they said , fine , I replied . Being Canadian they showed me how to use an interveinous delivery system by my-self , at home . Silly thing was the bag of IV anti-biotics wasn't quite up to the task ( hint , they were cheap and did not work ) . Anyways , long story short . Next time some asshole asks what you're thinking , tell him or her , what would you take if you thought you were going to lose a limb . Worked for me .

explaining that i was slowly losing the use of my right hand and arm added some urgency beyone what my mom was hearing "it hurts"

sissy had to explain when Gushka says its "hurting so bad she cant sleep" that means something is badly wrong, since she healed a shattered arm with no painkillers and slept JUST FINE REMEMBER??? She went to the horse show and won with kidney stones.

at which point mom was like "wow. forgot that."

87 61 obesity is caused by excess secretion of insulin, which is caused by excess consumption of carbohydrates

Not always, there's a genetic defect, pancreas defect, and also some neurological situations where even when some people whom never consumed excess carbohydrates their bodies do not produce sufficient insulin. It's not always a person's fault for an unhealthy lifestyle. Sometimes their bodies just never worked right due to genetics or some sort of other problem.

Under "similar titles" for Good Eats, they listed "Futurama: The Beast with a Billion Backs".

89 One Awesome paragraph from the "badass war heroes who never held a weapon" article. After the aid station was retaken, Sampson heard of an American soldier whose three brothers had all been reported killed in the same week (although one was actually a POW and survived the war). Moving quickly, he instigated the search for the fourth brother, Fritz Niland. Sampson went out, found him and brought him back to Utah Beach, where he was evacuated back to the States. Does that story sound familiar? It should, because it served as the plot for Saving Private Ryan, where the part of Father Sampson was played by an entire squad of rangers.

91 10 Star Trek Episodes WeÂ’re Glad They Never Filmed

1) "Miss Gulliver," Star Trek TOS:

Though no writer is credited, the April 1997 issue of Star Trek Monthly mentions a proposed episode reminiscent of Attack of the 50 Foot Woman, in which a science officer aboard the Enterprise experimenting with limb regeneration accidentally causes herself to grow to gigantic proportions, threatening the ship in the process. It's a small wonder the producers decided to can the episode.
Most Ridiculous Moment: The episode would have concluded with her boyfriend undergoing the same process, and the two leaving their old lives behind to found a planet of giants.

Both guys were exhausted by the 3rd.  Literally just kind of standing there, bleeding on each other. At one point one guy bent over and put his hands on his knees  -- and the other guys was too slow to take advantage.

Don't have 260 pound dudes grapple at altitude. That is not fun to watch. They looked like they were about to die, stumbling around like zombies.

Heh!  I know this is just anecdotal, but at our post-run coffee today, one of the big Obama supporters (who was even a delegate during the primaries for WA state) was really, really quiet when the lone wishy, washy Independent (who says he feels strongly both ways--wore an Obama/Biden button and a McCain/Palin button on a run during the election) said "I've been watching all the debates.  Anyone else watching?"

I said "I haven't watched any entire debates, but I've seen and heard some clips, and anyone could do better than what we have now."

Usually the Obama supporter guy is very vocal in his defense of Teh Won.  He didn't speak up for Obama.  Instead he said (very quietly) "I've been watching all of them too."  After a bit he said "I kind of like Huntsman."

Heh!  This guy's a hardcore Dem., but he retired early and was living off his stock dividends and interest, so life hasn't been very plush for him lately.  Apparently, he and my rabidly conservative friend ran together a couple of weeks ago, and my conservative friend said to him "What gives the government the right to confiscate the money that I've worked so hard for with my own two hands?" (He's a plumber).  The Dem guy came back to him a week later and said "You know, I've really been thinking about what you said..."

So, I think that people are starting to rethink their love for the Obamessiah because they are truly suffering the consequences of his leadership.

146 OK, low volume ONT. At least until people get their heads out of the straw poll. There's a certain liberation in that. A fresh, untainted ONT, smelling of freshly laundered sheets.

So I'll talk about whatever I want, no themes having been established: Global warming. When the libs went nuts about this, I resolved to look into it. A friend said I must pay attention to the science, so I said, sure, dude, bring on the science, send me links. Only one condition: nothing by Al Gore. He sputtered...and never sent me a single link.

So I looked into it, and read a lot, and reached some conclusions. One of them actually scares me.

1. It's a really, really hard and complicated subject.

2. Even if the anthropogenic global warming hypothesis were completely true, the political remedies that the libs propose for it are completely insane.

3. It's probably not true. The people who claim it's true are not acting like scientists. Notice how the people who had that neutrinos-faster-than-light result recently behaved: This is major, here's our data, please try to reproduce this, ask us anything. That's how scientists act. They don't try to suppress contrary results, refuse to release un-"adjusted" data, and generally behave like the worst kind of politician.

4. If you look at the really long term graph of the planet's temperature, we're well overdue for an ice age, and an ice age can come on really quickly. Most of the time, this planet is in an ice age, and all of what we think of as civilization grew up during one of the brief warm periods, which is now overdue to end. Holy crap.

150 #126, I have Celiac Disease so I'm used to dealing with people asking about genetic versus lifestyle causes for life altering diseases. People confuse it with Irritable Bowel Syndrome/Disease when IBS/D is really a group of known genetic, strongly suggested neurological/nervous, and possibly currently undetectable dysfunction of digestive tissues.

It never ceases to amaze me that there are many unknown physical causes for some "diseases" and doctors just lump things together with similar symptoms until science and technology catches up to diagnose what is really going on.

Half the digestive stuff people are walking around with undiagnosed and the long term effects of those diseases going untreated cause many of the common ailments people get by the time they're middle aged. Something simple as minor autoimmune overreaction to a certain food ingredient over the course of a lifetime causing more serious problems.

164 #159 wait until the Massachusetts Senate Election. It's going to be a re-run of Brown Vs. The New Coakley. With the New Coakley being even more of a snobby cocktail party bitch going full commie and lecturing the unwashed to their revulsion. It takes a pretty bad candidate to drive the battered wife voters here away from the Donk pimps into the hands of a Republican. Even if Sen. Brown is principally a RINO.

It's a spice, but you can buy it in capsule form. My aunt swears by it. Research it first, it has anti-clotting properties, so she shouldn't take it if she's on blood thinners, but I have heard good things from other people about it, as well.

She is an alcoholic, somewhat functioning. They learn to kind of "suck it up" when needed, but they can only do it for about 5-10 minutes tops. I've got plenty of family members like this, and you it is scary to watch them act as sober as a judge for about 5 minutes, but the second that is over with, they become like Otis from Andy Griffith.

This is why nobody backstage caught it. She "used up" her "normal", then didn't have anything left after that.

205 #190 the child dies, the wife lives but is critical. Max then goes on a rampage to hunt down the Toe Cutter's gang. He's on the run for about two weeks after that before the energy crisis in the background causes a nuclear exchange which destroys the world. It's in the novelization. Apparently Captain Fifi is fired by Commisioner LaRouche for Max's actions and the other Main Force Patrol guys in his unit resign rather than hunt down Max in the meantime. I'll never know if in the third film the guy who played Charlie was supposed to be reprising that character in Bartertown, because it looked like he recognized Max, or if that's just because of actor reuse. It's not really clear in the second movie either if the gang members are former MFP officers, gang members that looted MFP gear, or just reuse of the wardrobe from the first move due to budget issues. The whole series could use a better novelization or remake, but I don't trust Hollywood to do it right.

206 Details on how The Flying O is going to trash LA Westside rush-hour traffic once again:

President Barack Obama's visit to the Los Angeles area Monday and Tuesday will result in street closures, and the sheriff's office today issued details about traffic impacts in the West Hollywood area.

Three Marine Corps helicopters, including two presidential "Marine One'' style choppers, were spotted flying at treetop level over downtown Santa Monica Friday, leading to speculation that the president may transfer from helicopter to limousine on the far Westside, then be driven across Westwood and Beverly Hills to West Hollywood, avoiding the San Diego (405) Freeway during Monday evening's rush hours.

The president is scheduled to arrive at LAX at 4:40 p.m., attend a fundraiser at the House of Blues on the Sunset Strip, then move a few blocks to a more-intimate, $35,000 per couple dinner at the Fig and Olive restaurant in West Hollywood, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Los Angeles city councilman Bill Rosendahl on Friday warned Angelenos, especially Westsiders, to beware of traffic snarls Monday and Tuesday.

In Los Angeles, streets likely to be impacted include Sunset Boulevard from Barrington Avenue across Brentwood, Westwood and Beverly Hills to La Cienega Boulevard.

The sheriff's office warned of traffic closures Monday afternoon on the Sunset Strip from the Beverly Hills line east to Sweetzer Avenue; Santa Monica Boulevard from the Beverly Hills line east to La Cienega Boulevard; and Holloway Drive, and Fountain Avenue and Olive Drive near La Cienega.

At the "Blue Whale,'' San Vicente Boulevard between Santa Monica Boulevard and Melrose Avenue will be closed from 6 a.m. Monday until noon Tuesday. The West Hollywood sheriff's station is there, leading to speculation that the road closure is related to a possible command post.

One of the things that perplexed me when I thought AGW was an honest mistake, and not a scam, was why there was an automatic assumption that the a slightly increased greenhouse effect would be bad, let alone catastrophic.

We know the earth was warmer in the middle ages and the effects were generally beneficial. Now, there could be specific reasons why now that would not be the case, but for a long time the warmists just presumed that. As far as I can tell, despite significant work in proving it, there is nothing persuasive yet in that regard.

257 209, 215, The wife is still alive in the movie as being "salvageable", "tell her husband that she should make it *Max is listening to the whole conversation*" "Doctor he's been waiting outside all night". There's a lot of subtle details in the first movie if you re-watch the DVD closely. The second and third movies repeat mean scene nearly verbatim, but to a lesser degree of quality.

The first move is great because of the cars and the sense that civilization is on the verge of falling apart. The second film really jumped the shark and the third pulled a Return of the Jedi on the series. At least in my opinion.

262 One of the things that perplexed me when I thought AGW was an honest mistake, and not a scam, was why there was an automatic assumption that the a slightly increased greenhouse effect would be bad, let alone catastrophic.

We know the earth was warmer in the middle ages and the effects were generally beneficial. Now, there could be specific reasons why now that would not be the case, but for a long time the warmists just presumed that. As far as I can tell, despite significant work in proving it, there is nothing persuasive yet in that regard.

Posted by: 18-1 at September 25, 2011 12:15 AM (FBr/C)

If my understanding is correct the holy grail for AGW is to find a feedback mechanism that will generate 2-4 degrees C of warming in the next century, because CO2 isn't doing the trick. Of course if they incorporated the findings of the CLOUD experiment in the models even that kind of feedback would probably disappear.

Posted by: 18-1 at September 25, 2011 12:15 AM (FBr/C) The scam started before CAGW, the CAGW is just one of the larger elements in the scam. So it's not like they were all like "OMG fire" and then they were all like "sorry bro it's fog." It was "what can we use to get power?" Now, *some* people really believe it, truly deeply. We call them "useful idiots." Like that Seattle Rainbow Lady with her YouTube videos about how rainbows are proof of mind control or whatever.

That's not in the movie from what I recall.  Mad Max visits Goose in the hospital.  Goose is on a ventilator and in an oxy tent after being flame broiled.  Then the family vacay getaway.  Then wife and baby are run over by Toe Cutter & Co.  Then Max gets his leathers out from a trunk and goes and gets "the last of the Interceptors."  Fun and frolic ensues.

273 There's lots of short dialogue in the first film that causes people to miss a great deal of things and a lot of content that was never filmed or finished due to the budget running out. I really wish the film could be remade by Chris Nolan or maybe even a quality Anime style series. But I'm sure it would get messed up by some producer's vision, just like the other two movies in the series. No clue if the 4th filming now is going to ever come out or continue to be a vaporware disaster.

287 There's a cut scene of Max sawing off a shotgun from the MFP armory , but it's a single barrel so it was cut for continuity. The whole scene where he is shot in the leg is an editing mess, and makes no sense too in that he reaches for the shotgun, before getting run over, when he has a .38 in his shoulder holster the entire time. There's another cut scene of T.C.'s gang attacking the Halls of Justice and beating up the Sargent from the first chase and his partner (you know the two MFP guys whom don't reappear later in the movie) too.

Max's old partner "The Dark One" has his name stenciled on Max's pursuit special at the start of the movie and the guy only makes the appearance at the farm to collect the severed hand from Max's wife and file the report. It's the only time that officer is named and interacted with in the entire movie too. Yet another character/additional scenes which weren't finished.

You go up to the deli, there are three people back there and they all ignore you until you call to them. The meat department stinks like rotting blood. I went to the store one saturday night after doing all of my other errands, and the checker said, "No offense, but I don't know why anyone shops this late." She was too stupid to realize that if it weren't for the customers in the store, she wouldn't have a job. Yeah, I think for Goose it was just gonna be a matter of time with extensive charring like that.  Maybe when his hand fell out from under the oxygen tent is when he died?

I had forgotten about the "is she salvagable?" scene showing Max leaning near a doorway while the 2 docs conversed on the other side.  My take is that she was an organ donor candidate, docs just wanted to give Max happy talk, and Max decided there was nothing left for him in the old civilized life and became Mad Max.

Mad Max made sense.  Road Warrior made sense.  Beyond Thunderdome makes my head hurt.

Well, I agree with you about that prior to this summer, especially the last month or so.  I spent a long time defending Romney, even though I was never enthusiastic about him.  I voted for him last time and was prepared (resigned) to do so this time, but he never satisfied me on health care and then he doubled down on ethanol so I started looking for alternatives.

But now, since Perry entered the race and leapt to the top of many polls, I am seeing the side of Romney that so many complained about before.  I simply cannot forgive him for the scare-mongering on Social Security.  It hurts our cause as a party and I feel he's being willfully dishonest.  And he's said a number of things that remind me of McCain.

Anyway, sorry you have hit your limit.

I've been meaning to get a Dutch oven - a real one (the kind you use when camping).  It's the official cookware of Utah.  Now how many states even have official cookware, I cannot say, but they are serious about their Dutch oven cooking out here.  Pioneer stuff.

By contrast, the Le Creuset (and the ill-fated Martha Stewart-branded) dutch ovens have a non-reactive porcelain coating, which can even be run through the dishwasher....until, in the case of the one I had, a fifty-cent-piece-sized piece of the porcelain falls off.

388 For MissTammy and Skookumchuk -- you don't cook on fresh cast iron, or you'd be cooking on rust all the time. You coat it -- either with "seasoning" (burnt-on oils and fats), or porcelain enamel, or something else.

GGE -- you don't use steel wool to clean your cast iron unless you're anemic -- you'll get steel wool shavings and/or reaction products of your food with the raw iron at the bottom of the scratches in every bite. MissTammy has one good way -- scour with salt, then a bit of oil -- but that's only if it's pretty clean in the first place. If things are a bit sloppier, you need to clean thoroughly before the salt/oil treatment, and that's where the "pain in the ass" factor is highest for me.

390 373 Merovign: I'm experimenting with sausages in chili - what sausages are in your soup? Posted by: Skookumchuk at September 25, 2011 01:18 AM (btzPD) Well, umm, let's see there's that funky tube of regular (non-spicy) breakfast sausage which is what I use on pizza (deli sausage works fine here), linguica, sweet and spicy italian sausage, you can actually get cubed pepperoni that works well, they have like 40 varieties of Italian sausage at the local store, I actually like to add beef sausage (i.e. hot dogs, like Hebrew National), and I usually go light on the spicy stuff so as not to drive off the herb flavoring, but you can add more spicy sausage that's pan-cooked before serving. Really just pick sausages you like, it doesn't even have to be seven. You have to experiment because some need to be pre-cooked or cooked longer, sliced thinner, etc. Polish sausages, "regular" and Szynkowa, work well.

Stainless steel wool pad. Raw iron? In cast iron cookware? Surely you jest! Seriously, if it's properly seasoned you scrub it out with a stainless steel wool pad (or you can use a plastic one if you are worried about it), wipe it with oil and you're done. The salt is a pretty good trick, but if you are worried about raw iron, rubbing salt in it might not be such a good idea, ya?

I have several skillets that are probably decades older than you, and all but two have never seen soap or water. I am the laziest heifer that ever walked when it comes to housekeeping, but I don't begrudge scouring those skillets. Lotta love and memories there.

If he was over the age of 10, he amply deserved it.

I tried to oven-season my wok, and decided it wasn't working out right, so bought pounds of veggies and stir-fried them to death for about four hours. I'm quite happy with it, now.

the only time I have seriously considered physically assaulting Thor is when I came home to find that he had soaked my Grandma's perfectly seasoned 50 year old cast iron skillets in soapy water.

My husband never believed my care instructions for iron skillets until his mother said the same.  He even wanted to put one in the dishwasher.  His mother nearly killed him for that.

405 The suggestion for foodstamp reform I have been pushing is letting the needy buy them proportionally to their income.  If you make 10k a year from work or welfare you use some of that cash to buy foodstamps. say $1 gets you 3$ in food stamps up to a fixed total amount for the number in your family.  If you get 20K you get an exchange ratio of 1 to 2.  It would eliminate a lot of fraud and sale of foodstamps at discount rates for cash or drugs.

My daughter had a friend who had a Daewoo.  The thermostat went bad, she had to order a water inlet neck. From Korea. The thermostat is molded into the water inlet neck. I told her fix it and then sell that SOB as quick as you can, take a loss if you have to, and then buy a Honda.

Not at all worried about the raw iron, other than stuff will stick to it for sure. I am chronically anemic, so that iron wouldn't hurt me anyway, but given that I am chronically anemic, I assume the seasoning is working.

You should really coat new ones with bacon grease, then bury them in camp/bonfire embers over night, but I realize that isn't practical for city dwellers.

I'm not stuck on the numbers.  I'm just throwing it out as a different system.  I had a friend who ws on foodstamps for a while.  He had six kids.  They couldn't begin to use the amount of food they could buy with their foodstamp allotment.  Also, since they had extra foodstamps there was no incentive to be frugal in their purchases.  My way would incentivise wise shopping as the person would have to take some money out of their pocket to make purchases.

I have already sent this idea to one congressman but I want to pick a few key ones to send it to.

I wasn't so much trying to inform you guys, but to let you know that I wasn't expecting teflon. And, also, to point out to the adoring multitudes that "coated" covers a lot of territory. Iron has its own thing going.....but, I've got to say, for day to day.....glass, stainless, porcelain enamel, and teflon are much easier to deal with through a full "cupboard to cupboard" cycle.

Unfornately, I didn't really inherit any cookware, being that my mom (who, thankfully, is still with us) is still alive......and is in the running for the World's Worst Cook. Anything I've learned to do, I've pretty much learned since I graduated college -- so all my gear is new-ish.

419 Oh jesus, let's just go with the shoes. Less man-bashing involved.

I brought the scout troop's entire stock of iron dutch ovens home for re-seasoning at the end of a camping trip. Four real big 'uns. While I was showering the wood smoke off, my [Mennonite] mother-in-law soaked them all in soapy water and scrubbed them with Brillo pads.

It took me a whole day to fix that. AND A WOMAN DID IT.

Iron is easy to clean if it is smooth. It takes many years to wear smooth. Old-time ironware was smooth when you bought it, and Lodge has greatly disappointed be with their total lack of finishing. If I ever get another new one, I'll sand-blast the inside first, then boil the blasting medium out before seasoning. My skillets are all at least 60 years old, and no trouble to clean at all.

I wish I had specifics for you. Daddy always did it, and I know there is a bit of a trick to it in terms of getting the heat right. You don't want the grease to catch fire. I am wondering if they wrapped it in tin foil, or if I remember that from something else.

And you don't actually bury it in the dirt, Dark Lord!

Posted by: MissTammy at September 24, 2011 10:00 PM (SsG4J)

433 @430 That's about it. Got a set of RevereWare for her wedding (first hubby worked for Searce), and never looked back.

Large new ironware can be slow-seasoned on a gas grill, but you need clean new leather gloves that you don't want to use for anything again, because you will be wrestling hot iron all night and spreading lard on it.  You can also build a little charcoal fire in foil in there after soaking in as much light animal oil as the pores will hold -- but I suppose cityfolk don't believe the ash will ever come out ?

Aluminum ovens work just fine inside a stove oven, but the aluminum ones for use on [in] a fire have to be so much thicker (to have enough thermal mass) that they don't save any weight in the backpack. And one oven with utensils, I can tell you, makes a backpack. Send your shorts and toothbrush on ahead with the tenderfoots.

If I'm whisking up the fond to make a pan sauce, I'm absolutely thinking that stainless is easier than cast iron -- you can see what you're doing, for one thing. Of course, either one beats the crap out of teflon, because with teflon you won't get any fond in the first place, and you won't get the right kind of browning.

I'm just shy of 50 now, and it's only been about 15 years since I finally started getting over the panic I had in my early 20's when faced with the prospect of making ingredients suitable for consumption. I envy people who have grown up cooking, and tried to make our godchildren comfortable with the process.

Ford shouted out, "Hey, listen! I think we've got enough problems of our own having you shooting at us, so if you could avoid laying your problems on us as well, I think we'd all find it easier to cope!"

Another pause, and then the bullhorn again.

"Now see here, guy," said the voice, "you're not dealing with any dumb two-bit trigger-pumping morons with low hairlines, little piggy eyes and no conversation, we're a couple of intelligent caring guys that you'd probably quite like if you met us socially! I don't go around gratuitously shooting people and then bragging about it afterward in seedy space-rangers bars, like some cops I could mention! I go around shooting people gratuitously and then I agonize about it afterward for hours to my girlfriend!"

"And I write novels!" chimed in the other cop. "Though I haven't had any of them published yet, so I better warn you, I'm in a meeeean mood!"

Ford's eyes popped halfway out of their sockets. "Who are these guys?" he said.

"Dunno," said Zaphod, "I think I preferred it when they were shooting."

Dickens once visited Sandusky! Here's what he said about us:
"Their demeanor in these country parts is invariably morose, sullen, clownish and repulsive. I should think there is not on the face of the earth a people so entirely destitute of humor, vivacity or the capacity of enjoyment."

@463 Farberware! "You have there a national treasure" as they say on the Roadshow. Farber was in Piqua, Ohio, where all the iron stoves were made, which is why all the iron pans were made there too. "Wrought Farber Ware" made some of the classiest aluminum ware in the 50's, and didn't go out of business until 2000. Just when I was set to buy.

That's a real keeper, if it's not a latter-day licensed-name imitation.

487 who says a salad has to have rabbit food?

I will just brag up our swamp-bottom soil here: I "learned" a garden trick last year (meaning I stumbled over it) when I mowed down my patch of greens after everything went stalky. I was just preparing for a fall till, but damn if a bunch of stuff didn't come up again, and I had several kinds of lettuce growing right in the snow. As soon as I could get in there this spring, I had fresh 'rabbit food' to pick.

So, three weeks ago I mowed the sucker again, and yesterday I picked new spinach and Simpson lettuce. There's a whole forest more coming on, too. It was a just-average year for beans, tomatoes, and almost everything else -- long winter, soggy spring, early dry spell, just like the French ergotism in '51! -- so I'm appreciating the hell out of this small favor.

512 Being more-or-less a yankee (though my kinsmen in Connecticut call where we live, just west of their old Western Reserve, "way out West in O-hi-O"), I'm partial to maple syrup as the natural sugar, especially the thin stuff and extra dark stuff that don't make it to market. But I'll put in a plug for the Tennesseans who  make their own sorghum molasses. It is a very fine thing, often produced on ancient inherited equipment.

Them same southerners have a real racket in sub-rural Ohio, where everybody knows them for the fifth-generation field butchers they are, and will hire a couple to come in and put on a hog roast. They can scald and shave a hog like Sherman's army, and then put on an all-night country cooking show for the yuppies, who can only eat so much, don't know how to store it except the freezer, and let the cooks take the "leftovers" (usually 20 pounds or so) home just to get shed of it.  Good deal all around: all parties think they're getting over on the others.

I know of some ham butts that have tradition going back to the civil war and are most sought after around the holiday season. Posted by: cthulhu at September 25, 2011 03:26 AM (kaalw) About 70% of the oat stock is likely to be contaminated with wheat, so I only get oats that are specially grown and harvested separately. I don't do much oat-based cooking. I have never had a reaction to oats per se. Unfortunately I don't have a tricorder to go around scanning food, so I just "leave it out if in doubt."

545 Good Morning Morons

Turned on the TV to watch some news while eating breakfast. gahhhhh! Weekend F&F so liberal makes me want to puke.

Posted by: Vic at September 25, 2011 02:08 AM (M9Ie6)

546 Yeah, I know it's supposed to be satire.

The best satire is always based on the truth. In any case this reminds me of the real life news article of the Detroit welfare queen who was pulling down 80G a year from various welfare "for the children" scams, including collecting SSDI payments for children.

And people blame baby boomers for SS going broke.

Posted by: Vic at September 25, 2011 03:16 AM (M9Ie6)

547 I'm waiting for one of these Republican candidates to call for massive reform in SSDI. They wont of course. The CBC may accuse them of racism and we can't have that..

Posted by: Vic at September 25, 2011 03:28 AM (M9Ie6)

548 And on a different note, I retested my internet connection for speed this morning. It came in at 11.6mbs. That is probably the fastest I will every see given a Sunday morning with most of the neighborhood still in bed and low traffic. That is barely enough to run streaming video from what I have been told. During weekdays it will drop below 10.

I think I am going to have to look at different rental methods. Perhaps either Red Box or Netflix. I am leaning to Red Box since they are really cheap and do not involve another endless monthly bill.

Posted by: Vic at September 25, 2011 03:33 AM (M9Ie6)

549 The CBC may accuse them of racism and we can't have that..
Posted by: Vic at September 25, 2011 07:28 AM

Mornin', Vic.

That right there may be the most compelling argument for Herman Cain I've seen yet...imagine those rage-filled heads exploding every time The Herm opens his mouth!

I do love all the comments I've seen this A.M. about the Florida straw poll, especially over at Tepid Air. Everyone has drawn cast-in-stone conclusions about the race from this event, and bandwidth is full of "Cain can't win because..." and "Perry's campaign is dead..." and "second look at Santorum?" bullshit as if this was the whole enchilada.

And of course the Palinoids are still being Palinoids....

Posted by: MrScribbler at September 25, 2011 03:40 AM (YjjrR)

550 Posted by: MrScribbler at September 25, 2011 07:40 AM (YjjrR)

Yeah the talking heads are spinning like an ionized electron. Its all over for Perry is the general refrain. We have almost 6 months to the Iowa caucus. A month is a  political lifetime. (I have a news article for that issue and am waiting on a fresh open thread)

On the bandwidth thing I have seen what the FAQ from the services say. I have also seen what some of the Morons have said. It appears you need a minimum of between 7 and 10 mbs to prevent freeze-ups. If I had a Tivo that wouldn't be a problem, but then again, there is another damn unending monthly charge from the Satellite company even if I bought my own box.

Posted by: Vic at September 25, 2011 03:48 AM (M9Ie6)

551 On the speed issue another "ironic" thing is that a cable high speed connection is supposed to deliver 30mbs. My fastest is 11.6 which is slower than what the damn DSL is supposed to do.

Posted by: Vic at September 25, 2011 03:53 AM (M9Ie6)

552 Well I do get lockups and freezes when watching u-tube videos now.

In any case right now I am leaning towards Red Box.

573

Go to applications and right click on your internet application then it will show you which process is the internet process if you can't pick it out in processes. Right click on that and you can raise it to high but not give it a priority number.

563 Hate to interrupt all this talk of 'puters and the Interwebz, but the current Drudge headline is a stark reminder of what we have facing us next year:

http://yhoo.it/qFMTJk

The stuttering clusterfuck of a miserable failure is ratcheting up the racism. And the race-guilt-ridden media will be all over it, reminding us that we have to give President Historic First© time to right all the wrongs visited on his Unhappy People by The Man.

This shit nauseates me.

It's one reason I'm thinking Herman Cain might be a good choice (aside from his intelligence, proven abilities and passion). Perhaps the only way to put the bugbear of "racism" to sleep permanently is to elect someone who has risen in the world without a hint of Affirmative Action or preferences.

Posted by: Vic at September 25, 2011 05:09 AM (M9Ie6)

565 LOL, on the CBC item I had this for the morning news (waiting on open thread)

Obama Tells Congressional Black Caucus Jobs Bill Will Put People Back to Work

Obama's speech to the annual awards dinner of the Congressional Black Caucus was his answer to increasingly vocal griping from black leaders that he's been giving away too much in talks with Republicans -- and not doing enough to fight black unemployment, which is nearly double the national average at 16.7 percent.

So they think he has not been “liberal enough”. That shows you what a worthless pile shit this racist caucus is. I suppose this address was mainly directed at that worthless scrunt from CA, Maxine Waters. But think about this folks. When Obama tells a group of blacks to quit whining and get behind the program what does that say about the group?  And BTW, the black unemployment rate has always been roughly double that of whites. This is nothing new. The whining by the CBC is just more noise so they can get another “Pigford” payout.

566 Wow, Chris Wallace, who I generally don't like, is ripping David Plouffe a new one on the "rich need to pay their fair share" bullshit.
"That is just not true" says Wallace with his statistics.

Plouffe is maybe the most disgusting POS in that line of work.

....and that's some shit that looks up to whale shit.

567 Somewhere in the bowels of Washington, the Rovian conspirators are gathered to plot the course for silencing the pizza guy Cain, and once again move their hand-picked choice Mitt Romney to the forefront in public polling.

They were out in full force this morning on F&F.

Posted by: Vic at September 25, 2011 05:15 AM (M9Ie6)

568

We were talking the other day about the "reliability" of that Winthrop Univ poll (are lack of it). Here is another of their polls that shows you just what a POS they are

S.C. Republican and Republican-leaning voters do not want cuts to Social Security, Medicare or defense – but they might be willing to pay more taxes to help balance the country’s budget, according to a new poll from Winthrop University.

But wait

Forty-seven percent of S.C. Republican and Republican-leaning voters surveyed said they did not think it was possible to balance the budget without a tax increase, while 45 percent said a tax increase is not necessary. Seven percent said they were not sure.

Note they did not say they “wanted” tax increases. They said they didn’t think the budget could be balanced w/o them (which is also BS).

Nobody but communists and Warren Buffet “wants” a tax increase.

York on the Cain straw poll win

Evidently the key thing was Perry leaving the State to go to MI before the vote. Huh?  And everybody is claiming victory. But that is normal.

My feeling is Perry supporters who change their vote based on these BS “debates” were never real supporters to begin with. I have a wait and see attitude here. And no, I don’t expect anything different from the next debate. Just look who is sponsoring it.

Republicans MUST figure out a better way to hold real debates. I am not saying that because Perry didnÂ’t do so good. Hell, I donÂ’t think Romney did any better.  I thought Cain and Newt were the real winners but their odds of getting the nomination are long.

Republicans MUST figure out a better way to hold real debates....

Posted by: Vic at September 25, 2011 09:18 AM

Republicans MUST figure out a way to pull their heads out of the eliminatory cavities, Vic.

Jeebus Crisco, two straw polls and a couple of debates, and the whole thing is messed up. Few are paying attention to facts, while many are yammering about what they've heard -- or guessed, or made up -- about all but their preferred candidates.

Armies of Paulbots and Palinoids are concern-trolling, as are a few Romneyites. "Poppin' Fresh" is waiting for that "second look at T-Paw?" moment.

In short, no one is keeping their damned eyes on the target, which is the stuttering clusterf*** of a miserable failure, and the need to broom his racist ass out of office.

We have to listen to the candidates, choose the one that can best  meet the Prime Objectives (defeating Osama Obama and starting to untangle the hideous mess he and his co-conspirators have made) and get to work.

I will vote for anyone running against the Chicago Jesus (reluctantly, if it's Mutt Romney or The Newt), but would like it to be more a vote FOR than AGAINST.

Yeah, I'm dreamin', I guess.
