Overnight Open Thread-Friday Edition [CDR M]
— Open Blogger

Thank God It's Friday!!! So get a cold one and get comfortable. It's time for the ONT!

So, it would seem we might just be in the impact zone for this satellite coming down late tonight after all (maybe). This old Saturday Night Live video seems rather timely.

Cacophony Of Copulation Costs Money?

I don't know about this but according to this dude, Loud Sex Is A Billion Dollar Problem. Hell yeah it's a problem if you're payin' for it otherwise enjoy it. Oh wait, that's not what he meant.

What is to be done about this cacophony of copulation? Noise machines and comfortable headphones would probably be the cheapest way to solve to problem, but these solutions are unlikely to be sufficient. Improved building codes in areas with high population density would put the burden on developers, but perhaps construction could be stimulated with tax incentives. Or perhaps creating a standardized rating system would be a good way to bring sound isolation issues out of the closet and let the market decide how much peace and quiet is worth.

Or perhaps the market could be made more transparent by allowing buyers and renters to see the history of nighttime disturbances in a given apartment before they buy.

The Stache Of the 80's

PETA Goin' Soft-Core Pron

Do these numbnuts actually believe that people actually hear the message they are trying to send? I didn't even know there was a sign in this picture for like 10 minutes. OK, I keed. It was more like 20 minutes. But anyway, PETA is looking to get into the triple X web domain and provide you with information that is sexually suggestive that teaches you to debase women and ethically treat your animals or something.

This Is Our Iranian Enemy

I keep thinking of Chevy Chase in Fletch when I see this picture. I have no idea what the white wigs are for but these dudes are Iranian military. Maybe it's goat camo.

How Whole Foods "Primes" You To Shop

This is a pretty good read on how Whole Foods Primes You To Shop.

Ever notice that there's ice everywhere in this store? Why? Does hummus really need to be kept so cold? What about cucumber-and-yogurt dip? No and no. This ice is another symbolic. Similarly, for years now supermarkets have been sprinkling select vegetables with regular drops of water--a trend that began in Denmark. Why? Like ice displays, those sprinkled drops serve as a symbolic, albeit a bogus one, of freshness and purity. Ironically, that same dewy mist makes the vegetables rot more quickly than they would otherwise. So much for perception versus reality.

Rugby Rules

Now I know some of you just aren't into football and most of you don't like soccer. So have you tried to watch rugby. Perhaps going over the rules will help you. Probably NSFW for some reason.

Math And Science Post

Hmmm. I know, I know. We aren't supposed to have math on here but this is a pretty good read on Determining How Much Bubble Wrap Would Be Required To Survive Jumping Off A 6 Story Building. A taste:

Speaking of Zombies, The Walking Dead returns to AMC here in a short 3 weeks. I'm so looking forward to this season. I'm diggin' the poster for Season 2.

They're against animal testing until they need it.  Part of Penn and Teller's Bullshit episode about Peta was on how one of their higher ups is a diabetic, and uses insulin treatments that were created from animal testing, and still have some "animal parts" in them.

127 119 Hey, no one answered my damn question. If I head outside when the stupid satellite of doom is supposed to be passing through our sky will I be able to see it?

Hmmm...good question:

In that theoretical scenario, I would be watching for something streaking from west-northwest toward the south. But I wouldn't be looking very high in the sky. Heavens-Above is telling me that the maximum height above the horizon would be about 22 degrees. Ten degrees is roughly equivalent to the width of your fist held out at arm's length, so I'd look a little more than two fist-widths high.

The chart also tells me that debris from the satellite wouldn't have hit anywhere close to me, even if it was falling at the time, because the flyover is too far away. The "Alt" (altitude) listing is the key. "If your location has a pass with elevation above 80 degrees — that is, nearly overhead — then yes, you are in the potential debris scatter field," NBC News space analyst James Oberg said in an email explaining the process.

In short, I suppose it's possible.

131 I was listening to the God-damned National Public Radio today. A God-damned show called "On Point" which is their God-damned stupid attempt at a call-in political radio show, just like Rush Limbaugh only, you know, God-damned NPR.

They had a God-damned panel of "experts" talking about the God-damned economy. Why it's doing so badly. The God-damned experts were claiming it's a lack of confidence on the part of God-damned consumers and business. They naturally attributed this to the Republicans trying to cut the God-damned budget.

Not one, not one of the God-damned dishonest assholes even suggested that confidence might be low because of President Obama. Apparently the very possibility that his God-damned policies might not be flawless is something they dare not think, let alone say.

This is why I want President Perry, if not God-damned President Palin, to take office in 2013. This is why I want a second Republican God-damned tsunami in Congress. I want to see those God-damned hypocritical lying liberal bastards get their God-damned faces rubbed in how wrong and dishonest they've been.

177 Heh. As soon as I saw "Iranian F-18 Clone", I just KNEW that it'd be a rebuilt F-5.

Which would all be destroyed within the first 48 hours during a direct fight with the US or even the Israelis.

Of course, there are is one idiot who lurks amongst us who doesn't think we need the planes to maintain air superiority...

mpfs, I am definitely going to email you before I come down there next, because it would be lovely to meet you!  And I suspect there will be more trips in the near future.  That cafeteria stuff looked really, really good, too.  And cheap!  They had some kind of smothered pork chops I was dying for, but my dad insisted on going over to the Lodge for a ridiculously early dinner.  He loves their hamburgers, lol!

Everyone hyped Thor up to me and I was expecting better than Capt A. I liked Capt A much better, both as a movie and as a character. Thor was just a spoiled brat and I thought his "redemption" was kind of hollow and came out of nowhere.

Plus Steve Rogers has a hotter body, imo.

Posted by: Rum, High Functioning Sociopath at September 23, 2011 11:07 PM (YxBuk)

Maybe the Blu-ray has it but I listened to a review on the DVD and the guy said how a lot of deleted scenes showed some character development for Thor, like him giving a new cup to the diner where he broke one.  But maybe I just heard the reviewer wrong or that's a Blu-ray only deleted scene because I didn't see it on the DVD deleted scenes.

220 In reference to the latest round of protest over execution of murderers, a little something from our greatest American author:

"The funeral (Injun Joe's) stopped the further growth of on thing- the petition to the governor for Injun Joe's pardon. The petition had been held and  a committee of sappy women been appointed to go in deep mourning an wail around the governor, and implore him to be a merciful ass and trample his duty underfoot. Injun Joe was believed to have killed five citizens of the village but what of that? If he had been Satan himself there would have been plenty of weaklings ready to scribble their names to a pardon petition and drip a tear on it from their permanently impaired and leaky waterworks."- Mark Twain from Tom Sawyer

One guy I know was Facebook posting about how awful it was that one of the Republicans at the debate was rude to a gay soldier. Now 1) I would bet money my friend didn't watch that debate, so he's just passing on something second-hand; and 2) I know for a fact that my friend never gave a damn about Code Pink harassing wounded soldiers during the hot phase of the Iraq War.

And once you start to notice it, the creepier it gets. It's like they've rented out their brains to the Democratic Party, which can put any crap it wants in there, like one of those self-storage places out on the cheap side of town.

Posted by: sonnyspats at September 23, 2011 11:43 PM (I/MzF)

You didn't think your vote actually counted did you?

There may not be a formal conspiracy to run the world, but money and power have been screwing us for years at every level, and not in a good way.  Part of the establishment plan is to ensure that it is virtually impossible to field a dark horse.  The TEA party caught them offguard in 2010 due to its principle based amorphous nature and lack of identifiable structure.  They will be ready for us in 2012.

Doesn't mean we should not fight the good fight, but we should not expect to win every race.

336 I'll have rosaries for mpfs and Peaches bright and early tomorrow morning.  I have to wait in my car for hours of a parade to go by before I get to see my kids for about 30 seconds, so I will put the time to use praying the Hopeful Mysteries for mpfs and Peaches.

If it helps--and sometimes it really has helped me--to know more about the pray-er and the circumstances so that you can imagine help coming from far away, I will be in East-Central Indiana, sitting in a beat-up Honda CRV, praying on a rosary that i made myself saying the hopeful mysteries for each of you.  It takes about 30 minutes for me to do it well, so you guys can KNOW that at 9:30--10, I will pray that regardless of the prognosis or the stage in treatment, that God's peace be granted to mpfs, Peaches, and everyone involved.

I don't know if you'll find comfort from my prayers.  I DO know that I have found GREAT comfort from the prayers of others (often outside my denomination)--and I thank God to this day that those great Baptists were able to "overlook" the fact that I was hopelessly Catholic and still engage in that beautiful prayer chain.  mfps and Peaches, those fine people gave me  list of their folks who would be praying, a little bit about each of the links in the prayer chain, what their specific prayer for me was, and even described the chapel were they were all meeting.

Late that night, as the staff administered the BIG dose of the nastiest chemo in my protocal, I had an anxiety attack.  Not unusual for me at that time. and I was really climbing the walls.  I beeped the nurse's station dozens of times, but they didn't know what to do with me and I really couldn't articulate it.

I happened to notice under my phone the schedule for the prayer group, and at about midnight, my history/government who was a member of my mom's church was scheduled to start his prayers for me.

I don't know how to describe it now.  Then I was very cynical and made the tried and true arguments about mind over matter and psychosomaticism, but it didn't begin to ring true.  At various times during that night, when I would otherwise be climbing the walls, the prayers of my mother's church gave me the one thing I had lacked since diagnosis.

They gave me peace.  And I have come to believe with all of my heart that though we strive for property and fast cars, college degrees, riches--it's peace we really seek.  Pease.  The absence of strife.  The abundance of goodwill.  Security, safety, a calm mind.

I believe that without peace, the line of history would be riddled with failed systems one after another, for it is only in peace that we can afford to gamble on loyaltly, then speculate on friendship, then venture on love.

Getting down to brass tacks...how does some mouthbreather-level "remake" of the Three Musketeers, Now With Steampunk!, either benefit or not from Jovovich?   It's going to suck out loud, just like all the other attempts at "Musketeers", or worse yet, "The Count of Monte Cristo".

I'll admit my bias up front - Dumas is my favorite fiction author.  Has anyone ever managed to make a good version of any of his books that was remotely true to the original?  No.

I'm actually surprised there's no ninjas or Jesuit cryptography involved.  If they're going over the top visuals, then there's worse things than Ms. Jovovich in skin-tight leather with a sword.  It's still bullshit, but it's bullshit with inherent aesthetic value.

436 261 Obama better recognize Palestine soon.

Because once they piss off the Israelis enough nobody will be able to recognize it without dental records
///
Here's the thing.  Israel knows if an attack is just a pain in the ass or a real invasion.  Now I'm not saying that Israel will nuke, but they damn sure have the most efficient tactical military in the world and they will make sure that whoever attacks them does not function for a long time.  They will flat out take over Syria and exterminate, without much trial, that entire regime, period.  Iran, not so much; Israel will hurt it, but it doesn't have the proximity to flatten a country that big anyway., and Iran needs to deal with itself.  But Syria's wrecked, and probably gets turned over to the merchant class.  Lebanon becomes mostly Christian.  Jordan becomes Palestine and a 1 mile thick minefield set up between them.  Sinai becomes a UN protectorate - essentially a free tourist zone.  Egypt just shits on itself.  Ironically I see the Saudis sitting this one out.  Frankly, I seriously think that right now, the really really top Saudi guys are negotiating with Israel for sanctuary for something I don't know what yet.  Iraq's irrelevant.  Oh, Turkey, yeah, military coup 3 days in after Israel recognizes Turkish Kurdistan and arms it.

and you know what, Israel will play the "not a fucking chance again" card and shove it up the world's ass.

If Michael Moore fell out of a space ship and his body re-entered the atmosphere, would he burn up entirely before any part of him hits terra firma?

SF, check out Michael Yon's book on Lebanon from the "cedar revolution" to 2010.  It's called "The Road to Fatima Gate", and is based on Yon's firsthand time spent in country.  Lebanon is nowhere near going Christian, though they might regain their 3-way split between the Christians, Sunni, and Shia.

I read the whole thing.  It's deranged, but the framework for real conflict is  certainly there.  What I think is unlikely is the US getting all the blame, as the Sunni / Shia and Arab / Persian schism has existed so long.  We will be blamed,, of course, but the killing, if it comes to that, will be along the old Persian / Ottoman v. Arab lines once again.  Once that gets somewhat sorted out, then the bad old USA will be the problem.  The big question is how long can they kill each other without going to NBCs?

550 Fuck the government, fuck the FDA, fuck Obama and fuck all his jizz loving sycophants!

Motherfucking FDA last years banned a painkiller called Wygesic last year (that's the brand name, don't know the generic).  Apparently some little old lady died.  I don't know, don't give a shit.  My mother, who has horrible rhumatoid arthritis, took that shit for almost as long as I've been alive, took that shit with *zero* problems.  But fuck it, who cares that it has helped so many people with crippling arthritis, some old biddy kicked off.  BAN IT!

Okay, so my mother is on her fourth fucking painkiller because nothing works as well.  Fisrt two did fuck all.  Switched to hydrocodone, that seemed to work.  All seemed well.  Well, apparently that one stopped working so well.  Now?  Oxicontin.  Really?  Seriously?  What comes after this?  Morphine?  Crack cocaine?  Maybe rimjobbing Prez-O-Dent Barack Hussein Obama is the secret magic cure all?

I can't wait until the fucking IPAB death panels get a hold of her.  "Well, we have here a cost effectiveness study that shows that two Aleve taken every four hours will have just as much benefit when combined with a wheel chair and social security retirement benefits."

Fuck you, Obama!  Take your fascist fucking reform, dip it in honey, cover it in bees, turn it sideways and shove it straight up your candy ass.

My mother is 62 years old.  You should see her hands.  She can't make a fist.  Her fingers look like someone ran over them.  There's nothing to seperate the bones in her knees.  They rub together constantly.  We can't afford knee replacements.  Elbows are shot to shit.  She moves like C-fucking-3PO.  But with constant medicating, she manages.  It's the hand she was dealt, but she manages.  She's a strong woman.

But then our great and glorious fucking rulers from on high step in and her life becomes that much harder.  Who the fuck are these people?  Who the fuck are they to decide what's good for her?  Who the fuck are they to decide for anyone?  Do they deal with the consequences of their actions?  Well they got these study papers and statistical reports and some dude somewhere sucked the right cock and FUCK 'EM!  Every last one of them.  Fuck.  Them.

Oh, and the FDA banned inhalers.  Thanks a lot, assholes!

My question to the Republican candidates would be something like, so, guys, when do you take administrative agencies like the FDA and burn them to the fucking ground with everybody locked inside?

Government of the people, by the people, for the people?

Bullshit.

Fucking bullshit.

The biggest fear about the Iranian Missiles is that we've observed them trying to detonate said missiles in mid-flight.  There's only one reason why you'd want to do that, and I bet you can guess what that reason is.

And missiles aren't that hard to construct, even with the Iranian's deprecated industrial base.

561 Haw-haw! Good evening, everyone!

A bunch of Wisconsin unions are eating worms tonight. They decided they'd rather spend their dwindling funds on eating $16 muffins and getting Scott Walker recalled than having a recertification vote.

By the end of Thursday, the major state employee unions covering tens of thousands of workers will have effectively lost their official status.

Top leaders for those unions say they won't seek to meet the high hurdle for keeping that current status as laid out in Gov. Scott Walker's union bargaining law. With a deadline set for the close of business Thursday, so far only four smaller state unions have said they are seeking to keep their status by winning a difficult recertification vote.

Marty Beil, executive director of the 23,000-member Wisconsin State Employees Union representing largely blue-collar workers, said none of the units in his group will seek recertification.

"We looked at the law and we find the law at best an exercise in wasted resources," Beil said. "We've chosen to use our resources to organize our members and advocate for our members."

...

Beil said WSEU has cut spending but not laid off any of its seven field staff or three administrators. He said some members were now paying their dues voluntarily but declined to say how many. Bryan Kennedy, president of the American Federation of Teachers-Wisconsin, said so far only a small local state union within his larger umbrella group is seeking a recertification election.

571 From msnbc.com: Any surviving wreckage belongs to NASA, and it is against the law to keep or sell even the smallest piece. There are no toxic chemicals on board, but sharp edges could be dangerous, so the space agency is warning the public to keep hands off and call police. So if a piece landed in my front yard, I'd be a lawbreaker if I kept it as a souvenir? I could see NASA warning people if the debris was radioactive or toxic, but this is just government control-freak bullshit.

I've talked with her about importations, ut the problem is money.

She could get cheap drugs from Mexico, but there's three problems.

First is the cost.  She could get it cheap, but not as cheap than with her insurance.  She could probably get what she needs for $50, $60 bucks in Mexico, but that's way more than she was paying out of pocket after her insurance.  And money is definitely an issue with us.

Second is quality.  Buying drugs in Mexico means you're not getting the same quality.  Canada would be better in terms of quality, but see above.

Third is...well, we don't want to get shot. The cartel violence in Mexico is out of control.  We, and no one we know, is willing to go into Mexico anymore.

I don't know.  It's...exasperating.  I thought the hydrocodone worked, but apparently not so much.   We'll see what happens with the Oxycontin.  If that doesn't work...I don't know.  We just wait and see.

But these people make me so angry...

573 From NASA's site:

Update #13
Fri, 23 Sep 2011 09:55:17 PM PDT

As of 10:30 p.m. EDT on Sept. 23, 2011, the orbit of UARS was 85 miles by 90 miles (135 km by 140 km). Re-entry was expected between 11:45 p.m. Friday, Sept. 23, and 12:45 a.m., Sept. 24, Eastern Daylight Time (3:45 a.m. to 4:45 a.m. GMT). During that time period, the satellite was passing over Canada and Africa, as well as vast areas of the Pacific, Atlantic and Indian oceans. The risk to public safety was very remote. NASA is working to confirm the re-entry location and time and will provide an update shortly.

[bold and underscore added]

I'm gaining a better understanding on what's wrong with NASA today. They put a man on the moon on July 16, 1969 -- after Kennedy launched the Apollo Program on May 25, 1961. Just eight years and two months to put a man on the moon.

By contrast, it's now getting close to an hour to update a website "shortly".

I'm not sure if your mom ever tried either of those, but in dad's case it's helped alot. He is able to still take the naprosyn with the humira if things get a little tough. He is 73, and he moves around pretty good

654 From NSF.com: "Confirmed debris falling over okotoks, Alberta. Canada." http://twitter.com/#!/SpaceTrails Okotoks is south of Calgary, very close to the orbital track that passed there at 0420 UTC, 1020 MDT local. From Spaceflightnow.com: 0553 GMT (1:53 a.m. EDT) NASA says it continues to wait for final confirmation of re-entry. "If debris fell on land (and that's still a BIG if), Canada is most likely area," the space agency just said. Although the satellite seems to be off-topic by now.

664 that's the current plan

That's a great plan, chemjeff.

You sound like a great catch.  I'm sure you will find your mate the old fashioned way.

I'm really gregarious (although actually kind of shy... weird combo, but I'm good at initial contacts) and although I value this particular place (not that I'm looking for love here, but you know), in general I just think you need to interact with people in person.  Let the "chemistry" happen.

I was wondering if your university had a football team or some other sporting team that interested you (basketball?).  You could start going to games and try to sit in the same section and get to know people that way.

Or bookstores -- I guess Barnes & Nobles -- seem like a decent place to strike up a conversation.

Or any place where there are a lot of people traveling from out of town, because people can sometimes be more receptive to striking up conversations with strangers in that situation.

674 Robert - propoxyphene (which is what the drug your mother was taking is, mixed with acetaminophen (Tylenol)) is being taken off the market pretty much everywhere, so you're probably not going to be able to find it even in Canada. The problems are real enough, and can be brought on suddenly even in people who had no reaction before, which is why it got taken off the market. There are other drugs, talk to her pharmacist about possibilities to ask the doctor about.

675 Gushka, how often are these sharp pains happening? If it's constant, or going from 30 minutes to 20 minutes, you should go to the doctor -- and yes, I know it's freakin' late.

If it's occasionally, sporadic, or it happened once and then again right afterward, but doesn't show signs of getting more frequent, it may be worth it to sleep in your own bed and get rest.

The basic test is all about life support and alternatives -- if you wake up spasming to the point where you can't use a phone -- you'll die painfully, helpless, and alone. I wouldn't wish that on animals I consider vermin; I certainly wouldn't wish it on one of those odd internet voices I hear. Extrapolate the situation through tomorrow morning, with a safety factor.....and if you won't be ok then, go to the doctor now.

Anyway, you know who tends to be really friendly at universities?  Development officers, that's who.  They also tend to be women.  Maybe you could try to meet the major gifts officer assigned to your school - under the pretext of finding funding for your research - and network that way.

I'm not the most pulchritudinous member of the male gender, and I haven't really been a player, but I've had some very pleasant encounters with women who were probably "out of my league" -- because I asked.

I realized at the time that there was a 90% chance of being shot down in flames....but....there was that 10% chance, and how bad is getting shot down when you know you're shootin' for the moon?

If you think you can build up to a more successful request, and that you'll only get one shot, you can easily torture yourself forever to no "happy ending". But if you think, "I've got a 10% chance now, or I can devote 6 months of effort to make it a 10.1% chance...." -- why not cut to the chase?

Males tend to have a reputation for being more outgoing and friendly, especially if you neuter them.

We usually have girl kitties because... well, I don't like looking at the bulges!  But our two best kittehs were from each category: a female (spayed) Siamese and a male (neutered) orange tabby, so one of each.

Our cats are always indoor cats, too.

699 To expand on my 711: My neighbor's cat had three kittens. She was a long-haired black female. Her kittens were all black, one short-haired male, one short-haired female, and one long-haired female. I did quite a bit of cat-sitting when they were young, up until the kittens were six months old. I ended up with two of the kittens and my neighbor kept the mother and the other one. Eventually she moved away. I was amazed at how the four of them had completely unique, individual personalities. They were as different from each other as night and day.

700 I don't want one that will shred my furniture but I don't know if I want them declawed, that is like cutting off the tips of their fingers

We've had some scratching over the years with our kittehs, especially of herculon-type furniture (any rough fabric really).  But the current pair have ceased doing it since we got the sisal (?) rope wrapped scratching posts.  We have a couple in the house, including one near our bed (which is, regrettably, upholstered in an appealing fabric).  They haven't touched the bed since then.

DO NOT USE THE RUG-COVERED TYPE OF SCRATCHING POSTS!  It confuses the kittehs.

You need to drill down on this a bit. Active companion? Companion while you're doing things? Companion while you're relaxing? Talk to you? Demand companionship? Sit on your lap or on the keyboard? Hang out at the breakfast table?

There are some cats that ignore everything you do until you're immobile (like watching a movie), then they'll snuggle up and hang out with you. Then, there are others that want to hang with you for everything -- if you're websurfing, they need their own laptop so they can websurf along with you.

That's the way our siameses have been.  Well, not so much the current obese Lynx point, but all of the other ones which were Seal points.

If you can find a cageless animal shelter, you can have a great experience just sitting down and letting the kittehs come to you.  There was a famous one near Chicago (in northern Indiana... I think) called Fried's Cat Shelter that was a converted motel where the cats roamed free.  We're cat people, but were nonetheless amazed by how outgoing and "dog like" so many of the kittehs were.

Before you go to a shelter, I'd recommend that you visit some friends, just to observe how they interact with their cats. Once you start seeing how their feline personalities work, you'd be more likely to find a better fit to your own way of life.

As an aside, I've got a peculiar fondness for Manx and Bengals, despite them being troublesome for my lifestyle. It's probably a desire that they provide a bit of the wild for my life. It's probably best that I'm so allergic that I can't live with 'em.

I would also recommend a shelter kitteh, but taking on such a companion is a long-term, serious commitment. If CJ goes to a shelter unprepared, he might decide on one that runs to him and clambers over him -- while passing up one that moves close to him and "hangs out" -- or vice-versa. Without an idea of the "style" of kitteh he envisions, he could easily end up with one that annoys the daylights out of him -- which is a heckuva thing for a dozen years or more.

That said, there are years and years of bonding which will occur after the minutes or hours of getting acquainted. But it'd be best to have some reasonable expectations going in to the process.

The House pushes another useless symbolic gesture to the Senate who will of course kill it

Hey crying Boner where is the take this or nothing strategy? Oh; you will make another deal and whine about hills. Oh lest I forget;

The Republican-controlled House on Friday took another swipe at the government's ability to control air pollution, passing a bill that would delay or scrap rules to reduce mercury and other harmful air emissions.

Reworded for accuracy:

The chikenshit House on Friday made another useless gesture to appease the base on the fascists in the EPA by making out like they will reign in the EPA who controls the press and lying about the air pollution.

Government Shutdown Looms as Democrats Defeat House Bill

Congress remains hopelessly divided over how to fund disaster aid, an impasse that could result in a government shutdown if not solved by September 30. But lawmakers face a more pressing deadline. Currently, the Federal Emergency Management Agency's Disaster Relief Fund (DRF) is poised to run out of cash by Tuesday, if not earlier, with the account at the dangerously-low level of $175 million, according to Senate aides.

Reworded for accuracy

The Senate blocks disaster aid and creates an impasse that the press says will result in a government shutdown if not solved by September 30.  Democrat PR goons run from the printers waving fresh copy to the editors of their PR rags who print it while wiping the drool from their lips.

Oh go ahead and print that disclaimer at the end

TX “In-State Tuition bill (House bill 1403 from 2001)

I am so sick of hearing about the Texas Dream Act. Here are the particulars on that bill taken from a circular by the TX education board

House Bill 1403 granted certain non-immigrant students, including undocumented stu-dents, access to in-state tuition rates at Texas public institutions of higher education and state financial aid. To qualify, the bill required students to have:

o resided in Texas with a parent or guardian while attending high school in Texas,

o graduated from a public or private high school or received a GED in Texas,

o resided in Texas for the three years leading to graduation or receipt of a GED, and

o provided their institutions a signed affidavit indicating an intent to apply for per-manent resident status as soon as able to do so.

The bill passed and was codified as Texas Education Code

So Santorum and Romney, if you lying shit-weasels send you kids to TX for 3 years and had them graduate from a TX high school they too can get the same tuition rates as other TX High school graduates.

Is that a subsidy for out of State liberal liars? Sorry Santorum I know you arenÂ’t a liberal but WTF are you doing supporting one?  Maybe that is why everybody canÂ’t stand you)

Oh just so you can contrast and compare here is the real Dream Act

This bill would provide conditional permanent residency to certain illegal alien-students of good moral character who graduate from US high schools, arrived in the US as minors, and lived in the country continuously for at least five years prior to the bill's enactment.

If they were to complete two years in the military or two years at a four year institution of higher learning, the students would obtain temporary residency for a six year period.

Within the six year period, a student may qualify who has "acquired a degree from an institution of higher education in the United States or has completed at least 2 years, in good standing, in a program for a bachelor's degree or higher degree in the United States" or have "served in the armed services for at least 2 years and, if discharged, has received an honorable discharge”

In short that bill would grant immediate amnesty to a shit load of illegal alien migrants just by attending college. The military shit is a strawman. There is already a program for foreign students to get U.S. citizenship by seving in the U.S. military and it has been in place for a dam long time.

771 The errors and misstatements in Clinton's interview with bloggers  are sufficient to change his reputation from that of a firm supporter of Israel into that of a firm supporter of Israelis who agree with his twisted version of the facts. Clinton simply blames the Israeli right for killing peace efforts. He appears entirely--in fact, embarrassingly-- unaware of what has actually happened to the Israeli right over the last ten years, where the change has been extraordinary.

Also, for anybody who thinks this is a deal breaker, remember that the next president could easily appoint two Supreme court judges.  Second amendment.  We know where Perry stands on guns.

The only way we will get rid of Obamacare is have Kennedy get up on the right side of the bed and not be pissed off at Scalia that day.

Yeah, with Boner and Bitch McConnell retaining their leadership positions -- and it's their turn, after all -- I'm sure Congress will do a 180-degree swing and start being fiscally responsible, all the while being guided by the Constitution in everything they do.

I give that the same odds as Maxine Waters losing her seat.

More bone-age coming up!

A lot of people thought that was the case before and they counted on the blue dog right to life Dems opposing it.

It passed with 60 votes and ALL Dems voting yes (pre-Scott).

803 Putin really is amazing. That guy basically owns Russia. Nobody has even touched him domestically (without dying) and the rest of the world plays along like he's a run of the mill elected leader. In historical context, what is he most like? Not a king, but certainly not subject to free/fair elections either. I resist calling him a Czar because it's so patently Russian a term, but maybe it fits.

805 I see, claiming Romney wants to nationalize healthcare and ban guns isn't lying.

I have posted repeated links to credible sources. And is there nobody that doesn't know that he supports Romneycare and the Assault Weapons ban?

You folks bash Perry for Gardicil via XO at the same time Romney supports gov healthcare. You bash him for Illegal softness at the same time Romney supported McCain-Kennedy in 2005.

Where is the damn logic?

It's a fine old Russian tradition. After the tsars came Lenin and Stalin, who basically ran things as they saw fit, sans any real accountability.

But since we're all in for being nice to our Russian buddyroos and only going after the real Big Threats to our country -- like Mubarak and Mad Moammar -- I suspect The Poot is pretty safe.

Hell, even Dubya liked the dude!

The MA Romneycare bill is the model for Obamacare. Even the Dem press now admits that Obamacare is nothing more than a step to single payer gov healthcare.

That IS logic. Physician heal thyself

You could ask Michelle Malkin about that, Vic.

Problem is, so many people are guided by emotion in the politics game that reason and a little study of candidates' actual positions, actions and beliefs is just too damn much for their little brains to contemplate. Far easier to stamp those little feet and drop massive loads of snark bombs on anyone who doesn't pass the Absolute Purity test.

And what does that have to do with advocating for nationalized healthcare? Does Romney support it or not? Nowhere can you find where he does. If that's your standard then you have no bitch about people criticizing Perry when it comes to illegals.

819 @840: Exactly, Vic. Really, I wish Mitt's supporters would urge him to acknowledge his error on the issue of Romneycare and make an unequivocal commitment to repealing Obamacare in all its forms and aspects should he become President. Instead, they are hellbent on doubling down on The Stoopid right along with him. Come on, Romneyites: Where do YOU stand on the Personal Mandate? Does it really matter if it is imposed by the Feds or by the the States? Where do YOU stand on government mandating what sorts of benefits insurance companies must pay out? Stop calling the rest of us "haters," when the simple fact is that Obamacare is the Central Issue of Our Time. If it is enacted, America's days as the world's preeminent power are OVER FOREVER. It will suck up so much of our resources, our economy will decline, our military power will be drained, all that made America what it has historically been will be gone forever. And you Romneyites are down with that, apparently, if it is enacted by states instead of the federal government. THAT is my problem with Romney. He needs to renounce what he did in Massachusetts as the miserable stuttering failure it has turned out to be, and pledge to never, EVER, contemplate supporting such a thing again. After that, I would find him quite acceptable.

821 Doesn't anybody else think that the possibility of the next president appointing Supreme court judges is important?  We have already seen what/who Obama appoints-and gets seated-so I don't think we can have much confidence in our congress to block anymore wise latinos.  And both Romney and Christie are gun grabbers.

823 I suppose the Russians know what they like, but i don't see why. One regret. I have is that I haven't yet traveled to Russia. I've been to East Germany/Poland and Czech in the early 90's and definitely got the flavor of life behind the Iron Curtain,, but I don't think US Army personnel were even allowed to ask to travel to Russia on leave. Anyway, my wife is deadset on seeing St. Petersburg so I assume I'll end up there eventually..

824 Romney is a fucking squish.

Perry is busy watching slow ground balls go by.

It isn't looking good.

Purity test my ass.

Show me you can compete.

Show me you want to kick Obungler's ass all the way back to Chicago.

825 And both Romney and Christie are gun grabbers. Posted by: chillin the most for Perry at September 24, 2011 10:13 AM (6IV8T) Yeah, but you know, not all issues are 100 percent equal. Obamacare/Romneycare is the TRUE issue before us. No one President can grab everyone's guns... it's like fixating on a candidates stand on abortion: no President really has all that much say on the issue. Let's focus on the Issue that Matters This Time. As we saw, a President committed to ever greater government control of the economy indeed CAN cause nationalized healthcare. I might not agree with Romney on issues like abortion, but if he can be relied on to turn the regulatory clock back to at least 2008... better yet, 1988... then he gets my vote, regardless of his stand on side issues. But that's the problem, isn't it? Can the guy be relied on to do anything beyond saying what is politically expedient at the moment?

That is an absolute BS lie. Did you even read my eval of Perry? I was the first one to say he was weak on the immigration stance. But I don't support people spreading lies about what he has done.

But I guess that is all the Romney supporters have. They sure as hell can't run on his damnable record.

827 No one President can grab everyone's guns

We're one Supreme away from a left leaning SCOTUS. You think a President can't grab guns? Am I missing something here? Seriously, I am not trying to be a smartass.

If you could ease my fears on this one, I'd be a bigger Christie supporter.
