Happy New Year Moron Nation!! I don't know about you guys, but I'm so glad 2011 is over. Now on to 2012 where we all know we have a role to play in the Election of All Elections. Get involved. Some way, some how. Just do it.
Now here is your PSA for the evening. There is always a lot of focus on drunk driving but there is something else just as dangerous if not more so. The Perils Of Drunk Walking. Be very careful when you get your swerve on and stumble home.
For every mile walked drunk, turns out to be eight times more dangerous than the mile driven drunk. To put it simply, if you need to walk a mile from a party to your home, youÂ’re eight times more likely to die doing that than if you jump behind the wheel and drive your car that same mile.
Video of the greatest Drunk Walk ever caught on video below the fold.
New Year's Eve Info
Here are 10 Things You Might Not Know About New Year's Eve.
For children born after 1975 in the US, much of our concepts of the New Year have been shaped by the Rankin/Bass film Rudolph’s Shiny New Year, a sequel to the stop motion classic Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer. Rudolph travels through the Archipelago of Time, where old years retire after they’ve run their course. There’s also something about a huge, horrifying bird, and a baby named Happy, too. Really, I have a feeling if I ever watch this film again I might never recover. It did, however, introduce the word “archipelago” to my lexicon, for which I am quite grateful.
Fun Ways To Ring In The New Year

Saw this over at Neatorama. 10 Fun Ways To Ring In The New Year.
In many countries, including Spain, Italy, Bolivia, and a variety of other countries, it is also traditional to wear certain colors of underwear on New YearÂ’s Eve in order to bring good luck in the next year. While red is the traditional color in Spain and Italy, colors vary from country to country. In Bolivia, red is for love and yellow is for moneyÂ…presumably that means youÂ’re in for both if you wear red and yellow polka dots.
Flying Cat
I'm hoping he landed on his feet.

Nekkid Airlines?

Based on my travels on airlines, it's a rare occurrence that I would deign to see the passengers in the buff. According to this article, I'm in the minority on this one. Hands Up, Pants Down: The Pros And Cons Of Flying Nude.
In an entirely unscientific survey conducted by Trip Advisor, nearly four in five of the 22,091respondents said they were willing to get their gear off when high in the sky, if it meant that other people on the flight would also be under-dressed.The upsides include reduced plane weight, no-fuss body scans and plenty of good visual amusement when your flight is delayed.
On the downside, you'd want to hope there's no turbulence while the hostie is waving a pot of piping hot coffee above your jewels.
ItÂ’s also worth keeping in mind that planes are generally not full of people from Country Road catalogues. They are full of people who are bony, smelly, withered, blubbery, saggy, knobbly, bent and who come with rashes, stretch marks, pimples, scars and all manner of other nasties.
Cat VS Dog
Frankly, I'm amazed the cat was able to pull off some of these tricks.
People Of The Year

This list is much better than the Time Person of the Year. The 2011 UPROXX People Of The Year. I think all Morons will agree with this award here:

This though might give Christina a run for the money. Kate Upton: Internet Girlfriend Of The Year.
Update: Niedermeyer's Dead Horse says THIS is ONT Worthy Kate Upton Material.
Real Fireworks
America's Drunkest Cities

Heh. No surprise. Boston is number one. America's Drunkest Cities.
Bonus: What Your "Drink" Says About You.
Martini: If you're a guy, you're trying to impress (and it's probably working). If you're a girl drinking a dirty martini, you're a hot mess: the dirtier, the messier, the hotter.Bud Light: You're easy going, laid back, and at home at a sports bar. If you're a girl, you know how to hang with the guys.
Stella Artois: You have no particular knowledge or affinity towards beer so you just order "Stella" cause it's familiar.
Whiskey, neat: You're hot. Regardless of gender.

I really, really like this 7 of 9.

Soap, I got that question right, but I agree that it was unclear. My interpretation was more "have they improved?", to which I would say they have not, to any great extent. The 1911 is still a proven fight-stopper, and a man person with a .30-06 or .308 bolt gun can accomplish anything with their gun that anyone else, armed with a more modern variation, can, if they know what they are about.

Actually, I believe that autoloaders have been around for longer than 100 years now, even for civilians. Didn't Browning make an autoloading shotgun back in 1910 or so? In any case, the last hundred years or have been refining things invented around the turn of the century for the most part. The nineteenth century was the really big century for gun inventions - we went from flintlocks to machine guns and autoloading pistols in a hundred years. It has been largely refinement since.

Posted by: StPatrick_TN at December 31, 2011 07:01 PM (wH6fn)
Because of timing issues, my original plan is going to have to wait a bit. It's no big deal - I'm young enough to try to go in later if I wish. Besides, I'd like to do a postdoc or two to get some publications and expand my skill set a bit.
As for postdoc positions...Texas is looking more and more promising, but my main goal is to get away from PA for a while. My search is focused mostly on the South/Mid-West areas. We'll see. Even though the economy sucks right now, and probably won't get any better at least until the SCoaMF is gone, it's still a good time to train.

Many thanks to CDR M, Maet, and all the other cobs (even ace gave us one ONT this year if I recall) that give us insomniacs something to do late at night that doesn't involve just fapping.
May next year bring us not just a Dec 31 countdown, but a brand shiny new president countdown as well.

Rifle Quiz: 11 of 10.
They have a mistake in their answer key. The first rifles were muzzle loaded: FALSE, as the earliest known rifled weapons are breech loaders, but their explanation requires TRUE to be selected, and their text answer indicates FALSE should be the correct answer. I get an extra point.

As we are about to embark on a new year, I ask you a favor: answer me a question, as honest and as direct as you can. I, and probably many others, don't understand why you do what you do here, but in the interest of moving forward in 2012, perhaps you'll answer.
What motivates you to continually post comments in this place disparaging the regulars, and their beliefs (which are not monolithic, but neither are your continued inanities)? Clarify, further, why you continue to do so, considering that you have a) changed no minds, b) will change no minds, regardless of your message, if one exists in some coherent form outside this place, and c) you are generally reviled and unwanted here. What motivates a person such as you?

That's certainly a good bit of it, true. Remington didn't establish a market, either in the civvy or military, strongly enough to establish standards, so we ended up with SPC and SPCII. The well-established .243 already does everything the 6.8 was intended to do, so when the opportunity to kill it was offered, the offer was accepted, indirectly, by DPMS, CMMG, et al.

For every mile walked drunk, turns out to be eight times more dangerous than the mile driven drunk. To put it simply, if you need to walk a mile from a party to your home, youÂ’re eight times more likely to die doing that than if you jump behind the wheel and drive your car that same mile.
A reprobate "friend" of mine, was walking/hitchhiking down the road from a bar barely 1/10th of a mile from my house when he got hit by a car. The driver stopped and my "friend's" buddy beat the tar out him. The driver was arrested for DUI, the other guy was arrested for assault and my "friend" spent the next six months in a hip cast.
A similar thing happened to someone I didn't know but lots of my college friends knew. He died.
It seems like most drunk pedestrians are killed by drunk drivers.

I used to do that. Wifey didn't like it though. Reminds me of another sea story though back when I worked graveyards in the Control Room.
We had a trainee on watch from management who was going up for his SRO license. We all sat around and had him convinced that wifey's loved it if you went home off of graveyards and woke them up to "get some".
The next night he cussed us all night while we laughed our asses off.

I made a 3 minute drive to downtown, parked in my usual space, and watched the fireworks with about 50' of elbow room between me and the next guy on the lawn.
It would have been perfect if the friggin mayor hadn't cheaped the hell out of us.
Jacksonville has always put on tremendous fireworks displays. It has been a point of pride to have folks from much larger cities such as NY and Chicago ooooh and ahhhh and tell us they've never seen a better show. This year, it was the equivalent to a small town carnival show.
Very sad.

True, but in this case, with some of the kraut generals being laughed at for suggesting the invasion would happen at Normandy / was happening at Normandy and not Calais, it's a small indiscretion. Besides, John Wayne!

Ha, Thor has a very pompous, upstanding, Golden Boy of an older brother, but he is also very rational.
He has Moronish tendencies, of course ( his politics are perfect, he does drink though he seldom gets drunk and he loves boobehs) but he's kind of serious minded. Opposites really do attract.
I am not sure he entirely approves of my being here, but he has reaped a multitude of benefits from it, lol. You should have seen his face when I first came out with "boinked her in her squeakhole". He was the one who informed me that squeakhole, it didn't mean what I thought it did!

Two completely different aircraft for two completely different missions. The Tomcat's job was to loiter at altitude and launch missiles at Russian Bear bombers while mixing it up with the Soviet fighters of it's day. The Hornet's job is to self-escort on bombing missions and mix it up with the newer fighters.
A Tomcat will lose playing the Hornet's game, if a Tom gets in low and slow with a Hornet it is going to get smoked. BUT! if the Tom driver is smart (and you don't last long if you aren't) he will start at long range and use the range of that awesome Tomcat radar to his advantage, zorch in hot and launch on the Hornets before they ever realize he's there. The Tom could also drop bombs, but they weren't as good at it.
Moot point now, of course. The Tomcat is gone now, replaced by the E/F Hornet, which is a fine and capable aircraft.

You don't offend me at all, Rum! It's a fair question.
I am perhaps overstating David's "botheration" for effect. He is not jealous-jealous. When I first started posting on the ONT and saw how I was getting, I let him read what I posted. He just shook his head and told me not to be shocked if people thought I was a whore! And when I told him we got warned a few weeks back, he got to say I told you so!
Now, he really is sort of weirded out by the fact that I converse with people named Berserker and yankeefifth, but I he isn't worried I am going to run off with them; I think he just thinks I am a damn dork with no real life. Which is true.
He really was bothered by my friend's son, but that's another issue altogether.
And Rum, never worry about offending me or telling me to STFU, or that I am getting to be too vulgar.

Higher, better at certain flight envelopes, much faster (especially the Delta Toms, what a great airplane that was!) better at high-speed turns but a pig down low and slow. Hornets are greatly easier to maintain, mostly because the accessibility of the parts in the avionics bays and the quick-change mounting points on it's motors; the Tomcat took twice as long for each maintenance task, in the case of the avionics because of the sheer number of fasteners on it's panels.
Actually, they were *great* at it, and had a
shitload of ordinance capacity, *but* they were never fully configured
for it (avionics upgrades, hardpoint upgrades).
I believe there were some successful missions in GW1, or so I was told.
I am a Tomcat fanboy, though, so take it for what it's worth. I admit
the airframes were just getting old (they took a beating, though). Sick
to death they got cut up.
Posted by: Merovign, Dark Lord of the Sith at January 01, 2012 01:45 AM (bxiXv)
I wouldn't say they were "great" at it. They were adequate, and could be very good with laser guided weapons. They could carry a bigger bomb load than the Hornet, but not as big as the Super Hornet. The Tomcat was an exceptional long range intercept aircraft, which was the mission it was designed for, and it could self-escort on it's bombing runs.
I'm not a Tomcat fanboy, just a maintainer who worked on the weapons systems for both the Alpha and Delta Toms, including a stint at Pax River where we tested various weapons for separation checks, to include putting bombs on target. The Tom was good at it, but not great. The Hornet is a precision bomber, the Tomcat was a ball park bomber, but when you are putting 2K worth of explosives on targets in the ballpark is all you really need. They had LANTIRN pods for the precision work.

It was a beautiful airplane, and part of it's beauty as a bomber is that it could get in really really fast, drop it's bombs and then turn around and shoot a motherfucker in the face. The E/F Hornet is almost as good at it, but not quite. The E/F Hornet is a better precision bomber, though, but who really needs precision when you have frikkin laser beams to do that for you? I loved the Tom, but it was a pain in the ass to maintain. Damn but it was a sharp looking airplane, especially zorching along at speed with the wings pulled back.

*insert random 'insert' joke here*.
I'm not a fan of tattoos, primarly because when people get them, they forget that skin loses its elasticity over time and all you end up with several years later are markings that could have been made with a 6th grader wielding a black marker.
But at least a butt tattoo isn't readily visible, so that has a bit going for it location-wise.

I just hooked back up my Sega Genesis and played a little Madden '93. Go Redskins!!! Movement was pretty quick and sharp to me. Maybe 'cause I'm drunk?

Speaking of which, is a specific point to the game? What is the ultimate goal? Is there a monster to kill or something? Or is that. like, sooo 20th century gaming?
I really just want to tame a dragon, catch Gushie a Shadowmare, go in the rooms and read all the books, and find a nice mountain glade with a nearby cave to fix up. Maybe kick some bad guy butt now and then. And ogle Nords.
Maybe I can catch me a Nord and lure him back to my cave.
Bet vika has already figured that out.

Mero, I am determined to tame one. If one can use avalanches of cheese as a weapon, I can't imagine they didn't build in some dragon taming capabilities. I have Welsh blood, damn it, I will tame one.

Speaking of drunk cities and weird New Year's celebrations, I'm from Philly, and I'm stunned that we didn't the top 10 inebriated list. If they just narrowed the list to sports fans, we'd be right there. Anyway, the town will be pretty drunk today. as we have the final Eagles game of the year, and the Mummers Parade, which is our entry into the weird New Year celebrations. The parade is 99.9 percent white working class men, who proceed to either: A) drink heavily, march 3 miles into center city, then drink some more, all while wearing face paint, a wig and a dress, or: B) drink moderately, wear costumes full of feathers and sequins, play banjo versions of pop songs while marching those same 3 miles, and then drink some more.
I'm half lit now as I post this. I'm supposed to be at the parade starting point in 2 1/2 hours. So much beer, so little time.
Happy New Year, morons! Hopefully we're into the final countdown of the SCOAMF disaster....

I submit, civilian rifles have undergone significant advance over the last 100 years.
One reason being, manufacturing tolerances have improved by a factor of 10 or more.
Proof of Theory: Could the best rifle of 1912 compete against the best rifle of 2012?

It's more just an attempt to describe the utter confusion as to which to pick. That, and 12 hours of movie is easier to handle than 24. We do have work tomorrow.

I thought 3 was tolerable, but yeah, I'm actually a bit on the same page. Wait til kids for the newer ones, since kids don't care about garbage.
I'm also happy I have the DVDs with the original cuts as an extra. They weren't remastered, but they are the Star Wars I remember.
